Whistling screen?!?! - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

Ok, so overall not impressed with the BA. It clearly has some serious issues... but I never expected this!
I noticed today that when the screen is on (ie. during a phonecall) my handset now makes a high pitched whistling noise emmitting from the screen!! It's audiable from a good 2.5 feet away and is horribly annoying!
Anyone else had this problem/found a solution? If someone could check to see if they all do it I would be very appreciative
-Mike

Yes, I had exactly the same problem. After various emails and telephone calls I sent it back to my distributor (expansys) and they sent it to Dubai. Exactly 4 weeks later it came back with a brand new screen.
Don't get too excited though, as the whistle came back after about 6 weeks. Just got used to it now.

AAARGH!!

wheeeeeeeeeee
Yeah, I can vouch for you guys here...
I'm currently on handset #3, and into month #5 with my Orange UK Contract. Within a month or so, the whistle comes back, and Orange send me a new phone.
I'm sure they must now have it in their diaries to just ship me a new one!
Thankfully I have Orange's insurance, which means I get new phones... but they've recently changed their T&C to say that I must pay £15.00 to process the exchange.
As far as I'm aware, if the unit is faulty within the first 12 months, it is Orange's obligation with HTC to provide me a new unit, FOC - statutory consumer rights etc? Or is that the first 3 months for an exchange, and 12 months for repair?!
Either way, their insurance (which costs £5/month) has gone down in value for money a LOT now.
R.

Damnit. Mine went today for repair. Apparantly it has to have the same fault three times before 02 will replace it
This truly is the worst handset I ever had for reliability.

Yep same problem here. Started after about a month....not found a cure.

strange, i never had this problem!!!! :?:

does it make any difference with Asia IIs? I haven't had that issue yet. Only issue i have is when the phone is in Vibration mode .. the volume slider starts to vibrate and make a buzzing noise (kinda annoying).

XDA IIs Asia model owners
did any on the XDA IIs owners with asia model ever face this problem? put in ur views!

Yeah, I had the handset just over a month. Maybe its just the odd one has some kinda dodgy component which after about that time has an adverse effect on the screen. Strange, I hate this thing so much but after a day of no PDA I miss it terribly

mike: whats ur country
hi mike,
whats ur country of origin and was ur XDA iis of Asian origin?

Sorry no, It's UK

I've had an O2 XDA IIs for about 3 months, other than it crashing randomly when I got it, it has been absolutely fantastic.
The crashing was fixed by removing the O2 software.

Mine also crashes randomly, 02 software or not.

maybe you could try an IMATE rom 1.40 i have this and it solved all the minor problems that i had when i was on the pants o2 rom!!!

Apparently, the whistling we are hearing is from the backlight circuit.
I can't remember whether the BA uses fluorescent or elctroluminescent devices for backlight, but if you listen to almost ANY EL device (mp3 players, watches, etc) you will find they, too, eminate a slight whistle.
The emphasis, however, is on _SLIGHT_.
It's due to the high-frequency AC power that is used to give the glow - what we're hearing is the oscillator... well... oscillating.
That is (so I'm told) the technical blurb - and I've listened to all my other EL things I own, and yes, they do whistle too, very very quietly.
So - whistling BA owners - we have FAULTY DEVICES. :-(
R.

Wowzers you know your stuff. My whistling was immediately noticable when it first started and from a distance so it's defo not slight lol.
Cheers for the technical Jargon! I'll use it as ammuntion in the 02 shop when I try to trade this for a 2i

i spent 10min listening to my screen and another 10min on the phone to test out this theory. no whistling BA's here. maybe it's a bad batch of BA?

So the 02 shop just rang me at home. Apparantly the repair centre has decided that I have damaged the screen and that I have to pay £160 for a new screen or £17.50 to get it sent back unrepaired.
I'm not happy considering I KNOW I didn't damage the handset. If it was sat on the desk not doing it, I didnt move it, then it started doing it then I'd say I had nothing to do with it. I especially don't want to pay £160 to get a screen back which will only start whistling again in a month.
02 are scum.

orange m2000 vs o2 xda iis

Hi all, I've been reading for ages on o2's xda iis or the blue angel and the probs all are having here in the uk but not once have I heard of or seen of anyone having this kind of trouble with the orange m2000. Are there any m2000 owners out there who would like to give some feedback on the issue and let us know if you too are swamped with problems. I personally would like this device to use, but really don't want to go out on a limb when the wind is already blowing. As far as pda's and phones go, I'm not a whiz and certainly don't want to have to pay for something just to have to do a rom update, as well as take things off that shouldn't be there to start with...like the o2 rubbish I keep reading about. I'm thinking I'd be better off with a nokia 6630 or maybe the o2 xda ii i, but then, I have never been fond of nokias, and don't want to use a stylus all the time... the 2s would have been the answer (I think), or it is the only one that's really appealed to me in function and looks...so now I'm wondering what about an orange m2000, unlocked, using on o2...can you get manual settings to surf the net? any problems with the 2000?
I've got the M2000 and it has exactly the same problems as all the other Blue Angel's, it's just less popular (party cause Orange don't tell anyone they sell it).
I'm now waiting for Orange to send me a replacement because mine is fastly becoming unusable. It's fine most of the time (aside from the usual problems), but when it crashes, a soft reset doesn't work and I have to remove the SD and the SIM card for up to an hour before I get get it to work again.
I know other people with M2000's who don't have these problems so I've hopefully just got a dodgy phone.
Edited to add that while the M2000 doesn't look as pretty as the XDAIIs, Orange don't put on any of the O2 extra rubbish that O2 do which is good. And the phone can easily be unlocked so you can use it with anyone.
to be honest the only problems that i've ever had with my IIs were all down to the 02 active stuff. once i got rid of that and upgraded to the latest rom (think they all ship with this now anyway) it's been trouble free
I had and XDA IIs which I purchased only 2 weeks ago and it never worked properly. I never even got round to installing any useful software. Twice it hard reset itself while I was opening pictures to send as MMS’s. And I had to soft reset it at least once every day. I even removed the 02 active crap but it was still unstable. The other thing with the IIs is the screen. WHY CHANGE IT! My old one is great but the new one has an awful rancid look and you can’t see it at a slight angle, you have to look straight at it.
I’ve sent it back now and am going to try the IIi in the hope that the faster processor and bigger memory make the device more stable. I’m back to using my XDAII now which I have no trouble with at all, its just old and a bit broken.
m2000
Hi guys, thanks for the response...think I'm going to go with the nokia 6630 for the pic quality, real player, and 3g connection. Might check out the o2 xda ii i, but really wanted a keypad. However, I've got plenty of time to see if there are any bugs in both. have you guys checked out howardforums.com? there is lots of useful stuff on there too. Also, I'm wondering about the o2 magician or xda mini. they say o2 is not releasing them here but they are supposed to be pretty good. anyone know about those?
Well I have both ( and all other versions of XDA's as well.. as we have lots).
I personally prefer the Orange m2000, as we got a free memory card and none of that god awful O2 active built into the rom. Seriously.. that O2 active is such a negative thing to my users. (wake up O2 - the XDA2s / M2000 is geared towards business users with their own apps. they seriously do not need or want a damned instant install popup spam menu.
XDA 4 / M5000 / HTC Universal wont be availble till end September.. So its a case of waiting.. (mines on preorder )
The O2 Active stuff is V.V.Easy to remove so I wouldn't worry about that to much and just go for the device you like the look of the most and can get the best price on
just bought an orange spv c500 and im well impressed.. a little hard to operate at first because of the buttons.. been used to touch screen for so long ive forgoten what buttons are for but it does everything my XDAII can in a smaller package. still trying to sort out the gprs settings because its an oarange phone but apart from that..... o2 canstick the XDAIIs where the sun dont shine.
btw does anyone know the o2 gprs settings for and orange spv c500?
c500
Hey, why didn't you send me a pm? You're not gonna believe this. Was on ebay the other night and got a c500 myself. Figured why not give it a shot as I'm familiar with the spv, and also know a lot about the e200, but know nothing about the c500. A guy I work with has 2 e200's, 1 has a switchboard problem and the other, is working on a switchboard problem. I figured out the settings for the spv as well as the spv e200.. Have you ever heard of Modaco.com? go there... look for gprs settings repository or something like that. Loads of settings are there...but the catch is, you have to mess around with them and tweak them to make them work, but it can be done. took me 3 weeks one time of thinking, and pulling my hair out...but eventually was accomplished. This guy that has 2, one is on orange and the other is on o2. The c500 might be different, but if you are willing to work on it with me...so am I. I'll have to send the phone to HTC first to get it fixed as it has a cracked screen (lcd) and outer, but apart from that it's perfect. This is strange...but cool. I think....

Returning my SECOND XDA IIs.

Well, tomorrow I will go down to Accord HK (Hong Kong Service agent) and return by SECOND XDA IIs. This will be about my 8th visit to Accord in the three months of owning a IIs.
The first model had its internal microphone replaced three times before I simply got fed up and asked for a replacement.
Now, the replacement has a defect. Everytime I remove the Sim card, the unit HARD resets! Its ridiculous.
I really dont know what to do now. People still complain they cant hear me properly (with the old AND replacement unit), and now the hard reset issue is just too much to handle. I think I will ask them for a Mini and refund me the balance money?
What do you guys with the IIs think? Am I just expecting too much?
Not sure if this is a defect.
If I remove the battery from my XDAII for just a few seconds, my unit also hard-resets.
That's why I never never take the battery out anymore.
Cheers
Pat
Hi.
I would say that this is a defect/bug on the BA.
Several people have the same issue when battery is removed.
I don't have this issue.
I can remove the battery with the Device turned on, or turned off. No loss of data.
this is certainly a defect. The IIs has a backup battery specifically for this reason. My first (now returned) unit didnt have this problem. IIs users know about this of course.
I just wonder how everyone is living with the low sound problem...
EXcuse me but Jam sucks , i think XDa2 is the way to go 8)

XDA IIs not receiving messages

I have had my BA for some time and have had a problem where it will not receive some text msgs, sometimes it does not respond to them at all other times the screen comes on PHMs cpu usage bar goes up then nothing happens. I kno the messages have been sent as i have checked on the phones that sent them.
this is the third one i've had now after sending it back to O2 and having replacement units. all 3 had the same fault.
anyone know of a fix for this instead of me sending it back to O2 again, since they won't let me have a different model without paying full price for it.
Change to the iMate ROM. It works a treat. Its not that hard once you get your head around it! Although it does mean you have ahost of new bugs to deal with
02 are in complete denial that there is anything wrong with their software. The Orange MS smartphones have the exact same problem and they don't wanna hear it. I think because most users are too dumb to realise anything is wrong OR think its their own fault and are too proud to ask for help so no-one complains about it. You'd think it would be cheaper for them just to sort out the bugs rather than replace probably hundreds of handsets a year.
Just out of intrest, when was the last time they sent you a new handset?

tytn to spv m3100

Right, well i had enough on my tytn!! Contacted orange and got a new contract and getting an spv m3100 (free).
my question is, have i made the right move? I'm thinking about updating the rom, but will i still have the same issues? ie, not turning back on sometimes after i turn it off? also, text messeges not being sent? I use the black pro rom at the moment. is there a new updated version that most people are happy with? i have insured it with orange, so if it f**cks up on the upgrade or after, i can always "lose" it.
Let me get this right - you had a TyTN and now you have a SPV M3100?
These are the same devices, same hardware.
I guess the problems you are describing are caused by software - not by hardware.
Regarding a new ROM version - have you tried to read this forum? There are plenty out there.
as said its the same device?
tho be its now black than pink
same device, maybe so. but htc seem to suck at customer service. prolly the same with orange, but i'll be insuring the phone.
maybe, my tytn is duff. i had problems from day one but htc did nuttin about it! decided to go back on contract for a couple of reasons. 1 being gprs/g3 is way cheaper, and whats more the device is free!!
anyway, i'll give it a go, and if i'm not happy within 14 days, i'll be sending it back and getting something else, maybe an m700.
cheers anyway
wouldnt it have been worth trying some dif roms on your tytn and see if that solves the problem.
Probably a bit silly taking out a new contract on an old phone that you already have when the tytn 2 is due to be released any day now.
Might be worth a play with your tytn more while you are still in your 14days.
Also if you are porting your pay as you go number across to your contract, and the process has already started then you will loose your number if you give the phone back in 14 days.

all good valid points.
I'm sure orange isn't going to release the new version for a while, but then i really don't know about these things.
I will try a couple more roms (tried 3 already), but to be honest, i really hate the looks of the tytn!! looks fully out dated! it's deffo going on ebay!
i'm not going to port the number over (unless they can do it as a line 2). Also, i am gonna stick with the orange contract, i'll just change devices. i like the m700 (more so if there's a black version).
Thanks for the comments!
Txt messages not being sent is not down to the phone but a network problem. I have no problem with the phone not turning on with the Schaps 3.54 rom so give that a try if you haven't.

Screen noise

I, like most users here, have installed the "Offical" AT&T WM6 Rom from this site. I have noticed that when the screen is on, it makes a high pitch noise. It only comes on when the screen is on. Does not matter if the backlight is on or not. I (mistakenly) took my phone to an AT&T store to inquire about the problem and the tech told me that he could not do anything cause of WM6. I would need to downgrade to WM5 and see if the problem was still there. So...I am downgrading right now.
My reason for this post is
1.) Does anyone else have this problem with WM6?
2.) Does someone with WM5 have this problem?
The tech was saying that the driver for the screen was wrong and "overclocked", and that is why the screen was having noise issues. How much smoke was this guy blowing my way.
Mine does the same thing, and did it before I put WM6 on there. I would say that's a ton of smoke that guy was blowing up your ass. If you want, try the official HTC release of WM6 and if that still has noise you have your answer.
That is the version I am currently using.
I dont have that problem howver they may be something in what he says. When Ibe overclocked the processor on some pda's the screen as indeed made a high pitched noise. however the hermes screens are generally of good quality..... that said Ive just notice mine does it!!!!!!!!! I can only notice it if I put my ear up to it, I not worried about it so shouldnt you!
Mine did this from the day I got it.
I sent it back for repair, and they replaced the screen under warranty.
However, now (after about a year) the high pitch noise has come back. I think it is a problem with Hermes screen hardware since I have been running a whole range of different WM6 and WM5 builds on mine and it does not seem to make a difference.
I find it quite annoying since you have your ear close to the screen during a call, but I guess it could be a fine opportunity to upgrade to something a newer than the Hermes...
/Soren
No high pitched noise here..
downgrading to WM5 did not solve the issue. "overclock" my a$$........ I guess I will take it back and let the loser know.
Its common as far as I know. My Wizard had the same noise.
Talk about common... I had an old CRT that used to do that too.
Seriously though, I have been sticking my screen to my ear like an idiot, but can't hear anything. Perhaps this can be connected to a certain build of hermes. I have a X01HT Herm200.
did you overclock the machine?
No. No overclocking here. The noise gets quieter when I physically touch the screen. I am going back to the AT&T store today to see what they are going to do about it. Or maybe I should just wait a couple of years for my hearing to get bad enough for me not to notice it anymore.
Well when I went to the store, they gave me a number to call to get a new phone. Got the new phone yesterday and I am happy to say that this one does not have the screen noise.
