cheap xda IIs - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 General

um... ive lost the number - but phone directory enquiries and ask for O2 stafff accounts.
>> Option 1 then ask for new connections - employer Curries, staff no 002/ any 7 digit no. You will get a conditional contract offer after credit checks etc. U then go for O2 max which will set you back £75 normally. U pay £37.50.
>> Ask for sim card to be sent to your office as that is more safe - dont buy a phone yet. Tell them you are going to phone back after you look around for best phone.
>> Call standard o2 customer services after 1st month - I dunno if they will let you since I had my 02 employer staff account for 5 years, but say to them you spend in the regoin of £75-80 per month - can you price match t-mobile xda IIs for £49.99. To me they said ok.
Simple as that mate - but the thing is with O2 - depending on who you get on the other side of the line, you can either pull it off or not :?
hope that answers you question

If you bought the phone on a contract then she is absolutely correct.
When you buy the phone on a twelve month contract, then that contract forms a part of the sale. In other words, you havn't finished paying for the phone until the twelve months is up. Given that the phone is still, in part, owned by O2, they can put restrictions on your useage in their terms and conditions including preventing you using the phone on someone else's network. To change the state of the phone whilst it is still under contract it breaking that contract.
I'm afraid, if you want to use the phone somewhere else, you have to pay for the phone yourself! If you want someone else to help you pay for the phone (by getting it massively discounted on a contract) then you have to accept the restrictions that come with that - or wait for someone to create an unlocking utility
i bought it Sim-Free From THE LINK for £550 But is still locked to O2
so in other word the Phone isnt sim-free after all

In that case, I think you need to speak to the link, not O2.
It's not correct to say it's illegal.
Secondly, O2 don't own the phone. It's yours.
Thirdly, get on their case. Mither them, write to them and write a complaint to ofcom.

Been to THE LINK First then call o2
In the Link they say Is a O2 Device and you should contact O2 for the unlock code since the stock is came from O2 Directly
It is definitely not illegal to unlock a phone in Europe. In the US, it might fall under the DMCA, and be considered illegal.
Like Bassey said, the contract you signed might forbid you from unlocking the phone, but this would be a case for civil court. No operator would find it sensible to pursue individuals who unlock their phone unless this becomes a major problem.

As has been said already - if you have bought it supposedly sim-free from the link, then your gripe is with them as they are breaking trades descriptions laws by selling a sim-free unit when it is network locked.
In my understanding, no phone company would ever block you from getting a phone unlocked through their own channels as it is still revenue for them if they charge you. You are still tied to the contract anyway, therefore they know they will make money out of you either way.
The only way you may have trouble from the network is if you unlock independently, as they can then claim you have tampered with the handset and are therefore out of warranty should you have a fault with the unit.
The Link are definately out of order here. The problem is that you've bought it sim free, so you don't have a Service Provider. And the link are basically telling you to ring your Service Provider. ITS THEM!!.
To get a quick soluiton email your IMEI and proof of purchase to [email protected] and they will sort it out. They did for me.

Ludicrous, really...
It seems that every time you speak to someone at O2 customer services you get different answers; it's verging on the ridiculous.
My situation is that I will be travelling to Montana in the US on business next month, but the city which I'm going to is not covered by any of O2's roaming network partners - information that I double-checked before contacting O2.
Armed with this knowledge, I set about emailing O2 support. I explained the situation, and the responses were as follows (edited for brevity)
Me: I'd like to SIM unlock my XDA IIs as I'm going abroad to an area that O2 do not have sufficient roaming partner network coverage.
O2: SIM Unlocking costs £15, but we don't unlock handests until after your 12 month contract is up.
Me: Hang on a minute, I'm locked into the contract for 12 months anyway, and on my O2 Max tarriff, you'll get at least £900 out of me for the duration. If I were to cancel my contract, I'd still have to pay O2 the remainder of my line rental and, if I didn't, you could but a global bar on the handset's IMEI... so where's the risk to O2?
O2 Yes, we confirm you've had your handset for less than 12 months; if you wish to cancel, you'll need to pay us for the remaining line rental. If you wish to use your handset abroad, you need to have international roaming activated. To do this, you will need to lodge a £100 deposit against your account, which is refundable after three months.
Me FFS! I never said I wanted to cancel, and my tariff already includes ITS (as published) and now you say I have to pay £100 to roam? Did you miss the part where I mentioned that you have NO PARTNER COVERAGE in the area which I'm travelling to?? Please escalate this issue to a supervisor.
O2 Hello. You have had your contract for less than twelve months. If you wish to SIM unlock your handset, you will have to cancel your contract, pay for any outstanding call charges and the line due for the remaining portion of your contract, plus a £15 unlock fee.
... at this point, I could kill... so I telephone O2 customer services instead.
I get told:
1. The O2 shop can do it for you
2. The O2 shop tells me they'll call customer services on my behalf
3. The O2 shop calls me and says "They say it'll cost over £900"
4. I call O2 customer services - again - and ask for a supervisor, and get told to contact O2 network services on a different number
5. O2 network services say they DO have partner coverage in Montana, and that this info is on their website... I'm not near a PC when I take this call, so I cant check.
I get to my desk, get to the O2 website and check for Billings, Montana, USA under international coverage. Guess what? No Coverage
6. I call O2 customer services again, thinking to myself that perhaps a lesser person would have resorted to mass-murder by now. I explain the situation in detail again, get told "can't unlock under 12 months yada yada" and then ask to speak to a manager. Two minutes of being on hold and then I'm told - "Right, we're organising your unlock code for you"
A half dozen emails and about 1 hour of 0870 calls to get there.
Compare and contrast this with my call to Orange to SIM unlock my SPV C500 yesterday:
Me Hello, SIM unlock yada yada
Orange Fine; we've requested the code and will call you for your £20 payment once we have it, which will be around 5 business days time.
I've had my C500 since August 26th... yes, five whole months
So, in summation
O2 = first to market with the goods, but crap support
Orange = late getting the handsets, but very little hassle
i totally agree with u
when i got my vodafone SE v800 with contract
i called the customer service the same day say i want a network unlock code .... they say fine there will be a charge of £25.... i say that fine no problem .... after they give me the code straight away no question asked
From taking contract out to un-sim lock mt phone take no longer than 15min
I usually dnt like voadfone bcoz there low coverage in my area but that time is the first time i prasie them
O2 also told me if was illegal to unlock my XDA II. Eventually (after speaking to several O2 representatives) they agreed to do it for £25 charge and said it could take up to 28 days to be applied.
At that point I downloaded the unlock utility and within 2 mins had a nice unlocked XDAII.
Seems to me the least hassle to get the phone unlocked !
cheers
Russ.

Hi.
Thought you may be interested in the following service:
http://www.registeredcall.com/?cat=2&subcat=1&compID=2
You call this 0871 number and record phone conversations. You can then download the audio file or send a link to the file if needed.
Use it when you are phoning customer services etc so you have a copy of what people have told you - very usefull.
I have no connection with the service - I just think its a handy tool to use.
Regards,
Ian Watson

Y'know, if someone out there had developed a utility to unlock the XDA IIs, I'd have done the same thing
Unfortunately time wasn't on my side here... it's less expensive for me to pick up a Verizon or Sprint pre-pay SIM for my XDA IIs than to go to the trouble of either
a) Purchasing a pre-pay mobile in Montana, or
b) Renting a handset for use whilst I'm there
I'd rather pay the £15 to O2, get a pre-pay SIM when I touch down, and alter my O2 voicemail to say "I'm out of the country; call me on +1 xxx etc. if you need me" for the duration of my stay. That way I'll retain all my important data on my IIs, be able to dial within the States when necessary without spending silly money, and call back to the UK to retreive my voicemail without it costing a packet.
The one feature of my IIs that'll get worked overtime is the built in WiFi; there's plenty of hotspots around so I might even take a look at Skype for those occasions I need to call
SIM FREE does not mean unlocked to all networks, it means the phone is sold without a sim, I know we assume that sim free means unlocked but that is not the case, if it was the case it would be advertised as open to all networks, crafty maybe but there is no onus on the the link to do any more for you.
I'm pretty sure in this case you could probably push them for selling it with misleading information.
I do appreciate what you're saying though and again, we dont have all the facts of how the salesman actually described the product to the buyer.
that's strange, i just got my xda IIi and then phone to the O2 customer service, they said that i have to pay 15 pounds, then they will send the unlock code to me within 14 days.

This is OUTRAGEOUS!!!! "SIM free" generally means unlocked... so you're supposed to be able to use any wireless carrier... Even though the word "SIM free" word-for-word means "no SIM" and not necessarily means unlocked, the "SIM free" word has been widely used to indicate that a device is also unlocked.
It's clear that "The Link" is playing word games with its customers. This vendor is NOT TO BE TRUSTED AGAIN...
From what has been said (and not having seen your contract with the Link or the full surrounding circumstances) it sounds like:
1 Either the link is in breach of its contract/its obligations to you as a consumer under Sale of Goods Act (SOGA); or
2 You have an actionable remedy for misrepresentation against the Link shop involved (you would need to verify that there is no small print at the point of sale or alongside the demonstration phone defining exactly what sim free means/that you weren't informed of what this meant by the sales assistant).
Absent any definition of Sim free I think it is reasonable to intrepret this as available for use with any network.
Contract/Sale of Goods Act
There are certain terms implied into all consumer contracts by SOGA. The most important being that the phone is of satisfactory quality and fit for the purpose and as described. Important here is to check through the point of sale posters and leaflets etc (see above). Also when you were speaking to the sales representative did you make know to him or her that you would be making use of this phone with another sim. If you did then this puts you in a real position of strength as you will have expressly made a particular purpose known to the vendor. If not you still probably have a reasonable case that either the phone is not of satisfactory quality (given the manner in which it was described) or that there is an actionable misrepresentation.
Misrepresentation
There are 3 types of misrepresentation (innocent, negligent and fraudulent) with technically differing effects upon your contract. But leaving the legal technicalities aside, at the very least there is a good argument that there has been an innocent or negligent misrepresentation by the Link here aside from a breach of SOGA. Either way you are entitled to demand that the Link resolve this situation to your satisfaction or threaten to take them to the small claims court.
Conclusion
Where you get to, is do you want the phone? If yes, write to them and demand that they resolve this with 02 forthwith. State your legal rights to them as outlined above (remember to think about your particular circumstances). Alternatively if you don't get anywhere say that you will and pay the necessary unlocking charge to O2 and will seek a refund of this charge and your costs from the Link (keeping the Link notified in writing and retaining all paperwork and receipts). You can then take action against the Link (if necessary) to recover it.
If you don't wish to keep the phone, then return it to them and demand a refund immediately. Do not delay.
Finally, there are various helpful guides to your rights as a consumer on the government sites - see dti.gov.uk and look for sale of goods act. Remember that everything depends on the facts of a particular case.
Good luck
P.S Finally, having given some pro bono advice, I would appreciate some help in return from anyone who would be willing to spend 30 minutes on the telephone with me going through the upgrading process. Having read through Wiki I am getting lost with all the Dos commands root files etc. If anyone can, please PM me.
Thanks J

o2 online or o2 store?

need some help and advice...Have been told o2 online is better to get the xda2 s from... can anyone tell me if online is better regarding customer care and all aspects, or going through the store for the contract and phone? thanks
I've been with O2 since 1991 and can tell you it's just the luck of the drawer whether you get excellent or totally useless customer service. As for O2 online, they didn't manage to get a single bill correct in the last twelve months and the only way you can get help and services that you really want, is if you already know the answer and push and push until you finally speak to someone who nows what they are talking about, re-affirm to them that the service or option IS available and they finally find it for you.
I've also got contracts with T-Mo and Orange and the story is the same there. Customer service with any of these companies when you are using these 'cutting edge' devices is just a matter of luck I'm afraid.
By the way, I got the O2 online deal because it was better at the time, it really does pay to look around.
02 online or store
thanks for that, I appreciate the help and advice. think I will have a thought or 2 and see. any outcome on the upgrade or did you do it?
o2 online or store
Sorry....I meant to say the update (rom)...
CS on O2 is bad who-ever you choose. O2 online have never got my bills right either. No GPRS use has been charged for (at-all) since November. I wont be paying any £100-odd bill that they send with all my GPRS from Nov--> in it!! They forgot to charge for my GPRS use while roaming as well.
Note that with o2 online personal tarriffs, you **cannot** send faxes. There is no upgrade for this other than to a business tarriff. High street personal tarriffs apparently do allow faxing.
Nigel
online or store
Thanks, I've decided to be patient and wait till the store gets them in...really need to be able to just walk in and sort it out if there is a problem.
If you send texts go for an online Tariff, you get 400 more texts a month on a £19-£25 a month tariff from O2 online than O2 high street.
I think I'm the only person in the world who's never had a problem with O2 customer services! I even haggled them down to an XDA2s as a free upgrade
texts on online
The o2 online tarrif I was going to get had I think 500 texts and 500 off peak minutes, at the moment I'm on o2 online pay as you go, with 300 texts and very seldom reach that amount...If the texts are the reason for going online, could I get a fair amount on the o2 200 in the store? rollover for 6 months and double text and talk for 3 month.? The only thing I'm afraid of and concerned about is since I'm not real up on these things, I want minimum trouble with the phone, and should I need someone, want to sort it out as easily as possible with no hassel and without having to send it away. That's really the main reason I have considered going to the store. The main thing is comparing the 2 and going with the one that has more good points than bad. if that makes sense. Did I read right that you like the new rom version and have had no trouble with it? how do you like the phone overall? Finally, have you seen the website www.handango.com ? if you haven't...have a look.
Yeah I like the IIs, not perfect but I live with the niggles, Does seem better on the new ROM butI'm no expert. Main thing is just dumping all the O2 active stuff cos it's crap.
o2 active...
the o2 active is that like the games, and downloadable music? does it not work properly? how do you dump it?
It's just a custom today plig-inthat they install as part of the rom image.
I;m sure there are "correct" ways to remove it fully but I just change the today screen to a different one and remove the connections executable from windows\startup.
Does the trick for me.
double text and minutes
in stores currently available is dbl txt and mins for 6mths and handsets cheaper too
I recomend the store.
Generally o2 customer care is a waste of time, if you buy in the store, you`ll know the person you bought it from, and then know who to yell at when there is a cockup.
If you buy online, you`ll have no one to yell at. phoneing them is a waste of time aswell
o2 store it is
thanks, the store it will be. Now all I have to do is be patient enough to wait for the things to come in. Seems all the stores I know of don't have any and don't know when they will get them in. Oh well, the longer I wait the more money I will save...plus, hopefully the new ROM will be installed as well and I won't have to mess with that either. Thanks again

For those who wish to upgrade to XDA Orbit

Just thought I'd put a lil post here to help anyone who wants to upgrade with o2.
As my exec screen broke the other day and I am due an upgrade with o2 online, I decided to get the Artemis.
As I was on the online 25, 12 month contract, they offered me initially £99.99 for the phone. I asked to speak to their "specialist" department to barter for the phone
After some pointing out of facts (I like o2 and wouldnt like to have to change, I spent >£500 on phone bills last year, I would expect the phone to be free, other phone companies are offering similar phones for a lot less) I managed to work something out: £9.99 for the phone and aggree to switch to the 18 month contract with 150 minutes and 750 texts (£25/mo). The CoPilot software was confirmed to be supplied with the Orbit.
In the end, I am happy. Although I am spending an extra £150 with o2 for the 6 months, you could say I haven't got anywhere, but I like o2, and I like the Orbit!
Will post a review when it arrives (apparently before midweek)!
So I've been had then!!! Did exactly the same as you but I ended up with:
£99 for the phone
NO SAT NAV KIT (still in arguements with o2 as thought this was included!)
£15/month 18 month contract with 250 minutes - 150 texts
O2 going abroad: Spain - free for life of contract.
Total: £369 !!!
Hey it's not all that bad for £15/mo but a shame about the sat nav, IMO it completes the phone. They do still advertise it free, with what looks like no restriction on tarrif so go ahead and argue with them.
Good luck, keep us all informed!
BTW: £25 x 18 + £10 = £460
I managed to get for £24.50/pm 400 xross min and 100 texts , and the phone only cost £50 with free co pilot kit. Not bad hey.
t- mobile offer the best deal at the moment in the uk only down side is no wifi
agreed re t-mobile. as a self employed person they let you register for business use which means a dedicated helpline and manager - i have his personal email and he answers in minutes! i'm getting x network 900 mins, 1GB internet useage and international cheaper calls for £37.50 a month (32.50 for the 1st 3). considering i was getting 150 mins (orange/landline only) and 4MB of gprs with orange beforehand for £35, i am well pleased! plus the phone was free

Finally got a call back from O2, only took ten calls by myself over 4 days to get someone who can actually make decisions to call me! After explaining to the girl, "NO, I was not trying to get a free bluetooth headset, I was simply expecting to recieve the sat nav kit with my orbit"...
She replied...... "Oh is that all, not a problem, i'll order you one now, be with you in 3-4 days. I thought you were trying to get a free bluetooth headset, but they are £22. Anyway, sorry for the misunderstanding. Many thanks"
I was shocked it was so staight forward after all the hassle, but if the kit actually turns up, I will be happy!! I did get her to confirm over the phone that it was the holder, car plug adapter and memory card and she said yes it was. (Signed into My O2 and there are no new orders showing though???!!!)
Fingers crossed! If it does turn up then i'm well happy with the deal I got.
Received my orbit today!! Its all looking good however like many other people, I have not received my GPS software as is advertised, I will be calling o2 a bit later to see what they will do!

Unfortunately, after much hastle, I still am not able to receive my CoPilot software. Apparently, the free bundle is only available to new customers and to get this with the upgrade is £99.99. I have even argued that I specifically asked whether I would receive the software, but they have no record of me asking this.
What a ripoff.
My choice now is to either pay the £99.99 with a 1 month free line rental offer
or
Return the phone, cancel my contract, get my tenner back, pay £130 for the phone and software on a new contract
or
Go to tomtom and pay £89 for their satnav.
Anyone got an opinion on this?

If you don't need the wifi I'd just move to T-Mobile, with the amount your spending on line rental they'd probably give you everything for free. Aswell as that their line rental + data packages are very attractive.
Once my O2 contract is up (Online 100 @ £25pm + 500txts all free for 10mths) in about 6 months time unless O2 come up with some decent data tariffs I will be moving to T-Mobile.
Well I've just managed to get the XDA Orbit with Sat Nav software for free with 500 minutes and 900 texts for £20 per month (12 month contract). Wouldn't stretch to a free bluetooth headset though. This was through retentions and took 4 calls, each time getting a little more offered. Just waiting for it to arrive now.
O2 Data tariff for Orbit
I just upgraded my contract (data only @£9.40 a month), they charged me £99 for the phone but I just carry on paying £9.40....I never use the data only sim because I have a company Orange sim and all my calls are free....
I can't work out how O2 make money from this...The phone on eBay is at least £350 and I have no intention of using the data sim card....12x £9.40 plus £99 = £211 over a year seems to me a far cheaper way to own an Orbit!
Well I must be one lucky Mofo, as I got my Orbit free of charge and am only on a £25 p/m contract for 12 months.
I was originally going to get a P990i for an upgrade price of £49.99. But after getting the phone I found out I could get it for free from my girlfriends Vodaphone contract so I returned my P990i and asked for the Orbit which they gave me for free and refunded my initial £49.99.
Only difference I can add is that I had not done an upgrade since I got an XDA II over two/three years ago so they seem to have given me more due to that fact?
Great phone and is even better as I am using my T-moible chip in it for the 1GB web n walk.
Co-Pilot Pack
My Orbit arrived with no Co-pilot. App only free if ordered on-line. The online system wouldn't work when I ordered so I did it by phone. I phoned up to query it and was given the brush off. I asked to speak to someone senior and I got the co-pilot 2 days later. The web-site is none to clear! But credit to O2: they sorted it.
I have upgraded today. 4 phone calls and this is what I got.
£32.50 per month for 12months.
800mins 1000 txt per month. 5mb data allowance. Orbit + Sat Nav for free.
I use my phone a lot so happy with the deal.
I upgraded yesterday from an Xda Mini S. When I rang O2 customer service to enquire about an upgrade they said £89.99.
I then walked to the O2 shop across the road from where I work & the manager originally said £40, but then he said that if I switched from O2 250 tariff (£35pm, 250 x-net mins, 100 texts) to O2 400+100 (£35pm, 400 x-net mins, 100 texts) I could have the handset for free.
Go figure...
(The Co-pilot software would have been £50 in-store but I didn't need it as I already had TT5 for my Mini S)
It definitely pays to be a bit cheeky & haggle with them!
Got mine out of O2 contract (I am with vodafone), £349 unlocked, my employer paid £100 towards a new phone and I stumped up the rest. Very happy with it, finally we have some convergence in a decent sized mobile unit.
PDA - MOBILE - GPS - EMAIL - MP3
No bad at all...
The offer I got from O2
Phone: 149.99
Tariff: Data 5 9.4pounds/month x12 =112.80
Trade in : -30 pounds
total: 149.99+112.80-30=232.79pounds only
I got a 12 month free contract with coolnewmobile phone and only take the SIM card for my Oribit!!!!!
It is the lowest price you can have Orbit from O2 shop!!!
XDA
I was with O2 previously, myself and the missus contract. Nearing the end of the year, I called asking for the code to take my business elsewhere.
I was given some options on the crappy phones which I rejected as I was currently using and O2 chip in my trusty old SPV C500 and wood not trade into another contract with a phone less then par with the SPV.
I was then given details and contact number for the redemptions team who I called and they said we can give you the phone minus the software of you go on a £50 tariff for 18 months.
I said thank you. I called every alternate days (4 times in total) and got through and they bettered the offer each time. Finally on the last day when I was on the phone, they said we can give you the phone and the software if you pay £100 for each of the lines on a £35/ month contract.
I rejected and requested the code and guess what happens.
In the end this is what happened
I got 2 XDA Orbits, 2 CoPilot software packages and the following contract. For £25 per month on a 12 Month contract (yes a 12 month contract) and get 500 minutes anytime any network and 500 text messages and the phones and software were ABSOLUTELY FREE and did not have to pay a dime at all

Freaking high bill

Hi guys,
I've received a bill of 600 euro's... The reason they say is that I've choosen to use my old number of another subscription at Vodafone. In the mean while till my number is changed they gave me a 0 euro subscription that means u got nothing but a phone number to be called at what they didnt tell me... and it wasnt added to the contract either.
The helpdesk told me I could find this at the website so I looked it up and indeed i had a 0 euro subscription which means im stuck with a huge bill...
Because i had 500mb datausagate outside of bundles/blox and same for texts and call minutes.
Any Idea's? I've send a mail with an explanation. I will summeraise it. The email is saying that I was especting the normal subscription straight away and paying dubbel for 1 or 2 months. And that a good compagny would add those important lines like a 0 euro subscription to their contract.
Does anyone have another idea please share it
From my experience, your best bet is to bend over and try to enjoy it. Sorry.
But seriously, fight it. Get some advice and write a letter, sending it recorded delivery.

Moving to UK and need to Buy the Desire

For someone just moving to the UK is it possible to buy a phone on contract?
Apparently some sites say you need a 3 year address proof before you can sign a contract? Is it not possible for some one who has just moved to the UK to work to get a phone on contract? Really want the Desire
There must be a way to as a lot of people come over to work. Surely they don't wait three years!
The way contracts work over here is you will need proof of identity and a utility bill with your current UK address.
If you lived within europe for the last three years then I beleieve you will be ok however if not then you should still be able to get a contract but they wont provide you with a phone for a certain amount of time.
My GF when we went to take her out a contract at the age of 18 because she had no credit history they would give her a contract but no phone even though she had been here 18 years! So in the end did it in my name.
Best bet is to phone up and ask around te providers see what they say. You might even have better luck doing a contract in store (will need photo proof)
Good luck getting the Desire though it seems this country is sold out of it I spent the whole day trying to source one (signed my contract over a week ago and T-mobile told me today they have no idea when they will be able to get one)
Stores all around my county had waiting lists of 20+ and refused to put me down as their lists where to big. After alot of searching (and arguing with T-Mobile because they wouldnt order from two places that had stock) I finally managed to get mine and went and picked it up this afternoon (after they conned me to paying another £30 for the phone!)
Good Luck
Can't you even get one SIM-Free? If you can afford it, obviously

Dam they made you pay a lot!
And thanks a lot
Sim Free would be quite expensive sadly for now.
This person who would be moving there would be working with a law firm and they would provide proof of employment and with his Annual salary and contract length specified and plus he would have enough money in his account so he should pass the credit check right?
I just moved from South Africa to the UK... three weeks ago. Walked into O2 last week and walked out with a Desire on contract. No problem. All u need is a bank account and debit card.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Thanks a lot mate. Just PM'ing you now.

What all did they need? They din't check your 3 years address proof? And as for credit check what did they see?
What you may want to look into mate is buying a PAYG HTC Desire i got my O2 one for £330 then get a simplicty sim.
From O2 at the moment I think they do 600 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internet and your not tied to the contract its like rolling every 30 days. You ring them and cancel when you want to.
Won't let me post links yet but go to O2 then tariffs and Sim only Simplicty.
Also the website doesn't show the desire on PAYG but it is available in the shops.
Hmm but buying it for 330 is rather expensive right now. He'd rather take it up on contract. Thanks though
You may be able to do a full contract it all depends on what they decide its their discression. I just didn't have to provide 3 year proof of address nor did my finacee but because she had just turned 18 and didn't have a credit history like I said they told her she would have to be on contract for 6 months before they gave her a phone so I did it in my name for her.
I bought my first phone on a contract in the UK 1 week after I got here.
I bought it online, and I didn't have to provide anything... and when they asked on the form online for how long I have been living at the address I was renting, I said more than 12 months (as instructed by one of the indian online chat asistants ) ).
Actually I signed up to a £15/month contract for the phone (and got a free Nokia 6500slide) and also a 50% discounted £7.5 mobile broadband contract, so 2 separate contracts.
They called me the next day and said my credit checks are OK for the broadband contract but for the phone I had to pay a £75 guarantee which I will get back after the first 6 months of the contract... payed over the phone, everything came the next day, and that was it... (this happened in September 2008)
It was with Three.co.uk - but I won't recommend them because their coverage sucks if you come in the South-West around Swindon... The London area, Birmingham area are ok though... didn't use their network anywhere else in the UK...

Oh. Thanks a lot
Hmm he can lie about living for more than 12 months I guess.
Will this work with other places like mobiles.co.uk? And what if he goes to a Carphone Warehouse shop.
From what I've read at various places the address should be not much of an issue. So hopefully he can get his phone.
If he does take the phone in the name of a relative then can he do something so that he's paying out of his own account?
You can't lie about how long you have been living at a certain place because they are likley to run a check and it is illegal.
And no generally the money has to be taken out of the account with the same name as the contract or a joint account with that persons name on it.
Try going directly for a contract in his own name with phone they may give it to him.
I got my Desire two weeks after my 18th birthday. No credit check required as far as I know. I did order online though. I haven't missed a payment yet XD. So I guess my credit score should be going through the roof!
Just because you haven't missed a payment on one contract doesn't make you credit rating go through the roof sadly. its also based on sex / age / location (if the rest of your street have bad credit ratings then that makes your bad as well)
Very unfair if you ask me....
And they would of performed a check if they are providing a phone on contract but they don't always tell you - not sure if they tell you when ordering online as I have never done that - but they still will do the check.

Yeah that is what we want. He'll have all his address proof, employment proof and a ready bank account so hopefully he won't have any problem with it.
Is Vodafone's service good?
Vodafone are ok. We have them here at our company with about 100 mobiles and they are known for being the best coverage in the UK but in all honesty I would say my T-Mobile phone has better coverage then the Vodafone's we have here at work but they aren't bad.
Had a couple of problems with Customer Service in the last 4 months but they got resovled in a okish amount of time.
Hmm
That 30 pounds a month plan with the Booster seems decent.
Would I be able to get it at the Carphone Warehouse store though? Going online would take time and he needs to get his phone within 2 weeks.
