I have recently purchased TomTom Navigator v3.07 + Car Kit for my XDA IIi. I have followed the instructions and loaded the update disc (for windows mobile 2003 se) and then the GB Maps onto a SD Card (128mb). Within 15-20 minutes of using the system on my journey it locks up and freezes everything and then only way to get into XDA and other programmes is to perform a soft reset. Not ideal!
I contacted TomTom Support via email (on their website) and they advised that I try to load a small 16mb section of maps directly onto XDA IIi, wich I have done and the system works great. I then reloaded the maps for GB onto the formatted SD Card (as advised) and, again, the system locked up and froze within 15-20 minutes into my journey.
I contacted customer support again, not very helpful this time, and was told that the XDA IIi is not yet on their list of compatible devices - not satisfactory response - as every retailer in the UK has the xda IIi listed as compatible with tomtom navigator.
Has anyone had similar problems and resolved, any help out there would be reallyappreciated!!!
Fisely
Sorry to hear about your tomtom problem.
I had an XDAII with my tomtom 3 and what I found was that sometimes it would lock up and other nigly software problems. But they were all intermittent.
I now have an XDAIIi with my tomtom. My XDAIIi is set to turbo mode. I think it run slightly better compared to my XDAII.
What I would do is a hard reset and load everything from scratch. A real pain i know but if you don't get any support from tomtom then what else is there?
I have same problem What has helped sometimes is :enable bluetooth, switch on flightmode, then start tomtomand go.
But this only worked for me after i had deleted all the 02 crap from xda11 there is a link somewhwere here telling you how to do this :?
Good luck hope it works for you
Freezing up of software resolved - see below
After contacting TomTom Suppo rt I managed to get further info and advice which I followed and this has resolved the locking up of the software - works brilliantly now.
Dear TomTom Support,
Many thanks for your last response. I am pleased to report that after purchasing a SD Card with a speed of 80x (Read of minimum 12mb/second), as per your advice, and reloading the GB Maps - everything is working very well without any freezing and locking up of the software on my XDA IIi.
I would advocate a note be included, in future, with TomTom products on guidance about Storage Cards and using ones with appropriate speeds for reading/writing etc. for the benefit of other potential users of your products.
If I had knowledge on this subject prior to purchase of SD Cards, I believe, I would have bought one with appropriate speeds.
Once again thank you for resolving the problem.
Faisal

Dear Mr hussain,
The process of elimination would suggest that the SD card is causing the freezing issue, the software seemed to work when the SD card was taken out of the equation so it would suggest that the read speed of the SD card is causing the problem.
With best regards,

Dear TomTom,
Many thanks for your last response.
Can I deduce from the message that if I purchase a branded (and more expensive) SD Card with a Reading speed of at least 10MB/Second and load up the maps for GB - it will then work without locking and freezing up?
Best wishes
Faisal
Response 06/06/2005 08.28 AM
Dear Mr hussain,
When using SD cards, please bear in mind that the reading speed should be at least 10MB/second, because the map data continuously will be read from the card. The card writing speed is not important in this sense, because the application is not going to write on the card as for instance would be the case with a digital camera. Please also bear in mind that the writing speed specification “45x speed” means that the reading – respectively writing speed of the card is 45x150Kb/s and that is why it is only 6,75 MB/sec (60x speed means 60x150Kb/s and this is 9,00 MB/sec.). Please ask your reseller for more information about whether the speed indication is about reading or writing speed of the card.
Regarding the SD cards in general, we have received numerous reports.
Many cheaply made SD cards, most especially those SD cards without a brand name, can cause problems regarding reading speeds or in a worse case scenario have corrupted files on the SD card and are therefore not readable. Cheaply made SD cards may also have a weak memory controller on the card, which although these cards might work fine in a digital camera, may not be able to pass information quickly from its memory to the TomTom GO application. This can for instance result in freezing of the TomTom application or poor map redrawing. Another issue could occur during start-up: If the map exceeds a certain amount of data, it can be that the GO application is not even going to fully start-up.
We hope to have answered your question to your satisfaction.
With best regards,
The TomTom Customer Support Team
Hi,
Love my Orbit, but everytime I save around 600Mb of data on the storage card it gets corrupted (funny characters in file explorer, cant access any installed programs on storage card etc...)
This has happened three times in the last three weeks, pulling out the battery and restarting does not fix it, I've even hooked the sd card up to my laptop and it sees the corrupt data as well.
Has anyone else seen this?
EDIT - May 2007 - fix now found
HTC quote
An improved SD card handling mechanism is now available to all customers. To install this enhancement, please install the cab below:
There is a HTC fix for the corrupt card issue download here http://www.europe.htc.com/z/pdf/guides/ArtemisSDEnhancement.CAB
I've been having some files become corrupted for about a week. I've had my compact III for about 4 weeks. Lost night I lost the lot while using TomTom! When I checked it on the PC It still had 700mb on it but the total of the files came to just over 1mb. This was with a 1GB card.
What other software do you have on yours? Do you use a2dp?
Phil
Its never failed during use, only during installing a new program or after charging, hence my thought it might have been a file size limit.
I also use tomtom stored on my SD card, this has happened three times and I have had a variety of software on it, but have been slowly dropping titles to see what the common app is (I thought it was omap, which it wasn't) it happend last night while installing AM Task+, I had tomtom and tcpmp and 300Mb of divx on the card, but nothing running.
Does this help? To be honest I was half wishing noone would reply so I could return the card and be on my merry way!!!
I just posted another thread about the same thing!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285520
I also have had the crazy strange characters, but a soft reset would fix that. Now it's just data disappearing (the entire contents of my 2gb card was the victim this morning...my head almost exploded!)
Man, I hope we all just have crappy cards! I'll keep testing and post results. I hope my seller will switch it out for me - then if it happens again we will have a clue as to whether the Artemis or the card is to blame!
Let's keep this the official thread on this topic - please read my post above, but reply to this thread.
This (Sandisk 1GB) card always worked perfectly on my Hermes so I am a little concerned that it might be the internal location of the card. I am going to backup my card regularly. The reason I asked about installed apps is that I have been using Battery Status with scaled overclocking to 273mhz on it for a couple of weeks now. I was using A2DP last night for 20 minutes just before my card corrupted while overclocked and was worried that this may have caused it. Temperatures did not get as hot as they do during charging so I'm pretty sure that these programs were not the direct cause.
Phil
Interesting thought about the A2DP...
I have never used a bluetooth headset before I bought my Artemis. Now, bear in mind as I said, I have lost a few files prior to using A2DP and have also seen the strange characters as well. However, I got some bluetooth headphones yesterday and used A2DP for around 20 minutes or so for the first time ever. Then this morning, after soft reset....BLAMMO! everything gone on my 2gb microSD card. Oh yeah, I am using constant overclocking to 240mhz.
Could just be coincidence, but I am going to install a few files again and then use A2DP again. If it happens again, we will be narrowing down the cause!
I will report my findings later...
P3300
I have the same problem, but with the 512mb card that was supplied with my P3300 premium. Sending it back!
I don't use A2DP
I was experiencing the same problem some days ago. Now it seems that the microDS is stable. However, there is directory named Files to be deleted that is created automatically and I suspect that is related with Tomtom software. Is anybody that has not Tomtom preinstalled having the same problem?
Regards.
I didn't have tomtom preinstalled, Whenever the card becomes corrupted I can see "Files to be deleted" which I think is actually a Windows Mobile system folder
Interesting though, there seems to be a tomtom common thread here, I may try and install another navigator and see how it goes.
I had this problem today. Lot of folders with strange letters appeared on my card. I soft reset the ppc, everything is back again. but some Chinese characters are not readable any more.
Did someone figure out already what is the reason for this?
PS: forgot to mention that I have tomtom preinstalled. My ppc runs a German system from O2 Germany
Same here, but I know why it happened
I also lost all data on my storage card, but was due to syncing with media player on my desktop. I synced music because some files were asking for certificates and that is the way to transfer those that don't play. Unfortunatly clicked the wrong button and card was replaced with music files!
Luckily and unexpectedly restoring the Tomtom backup from desktop restored most of the files on the storage card, and then resetting and syncing (excluded windows media player ) with pc brought the programs back. But there are two strange folders that cannot be deleted because they are "system files" in addition to the one called "FilesToBedDeleted". One is namedwith a square symbol and E (but longer name can be seen when explored from activesync).
The TomTom desktop backup really backsup the entire storage card so if you have it you should use it frequently.
Victor
Maybe a solution?
I have the same with my xda orbit, I have a 2GB microsd and once in a while suddenly I cannot access the data anymore, the folders and files are looking corrupt, weird names of the files and folders
What helped for me is, to take out the memorycard, insert it again and make sure it is tight in the lock. Then, when you switch it on again, the files should all be accessible again.
I was thinking it might be a problem that the card is not tight enough in the lock so it would lose the contact, so what I did is that I used a small pice of plastic a little thicker than the lock of the sim-card to give higher pressure on the memorycard under the battery. Until now it works fine for me, but I do not know if it is a solution yet, I will have to wait some more days to see if it really works like that.
A lot of people here said that after a softreset everything is OK again, never tried it, so maybe it was just OK coz I took out the battery, it would be similar to a soft reset.
So Now I am not sure anymore if my solution is one, but as I said, until now it is OK. I will post again if I know more.
Is this problem effect only O2 orbit, or all HTC artemis and Dopdo P800W??
I have also had this problem on my 1GB MicroSD
Just did a soft reset and then then everything appeared to be gone. When I checked how much storage was left on the card it still had 600MB shown in use but no files were visible.
I also have Tomtom 6 installed and had used it extensivley just before the card corrupted.
I have formatted it and reinstalled everything and have no probs since although I haven't used the sat nav since.
Its this occurs because of:
Micro SD brands Sandisk only, Transcend, or Kingston
MIcro SD storages size? 2 gb/ 1 gb
Device ROM: O2 orbit rom, HTC Artemis rom
Sandisk, 2 gb, O2 Orbit here
Until now still working fine after using my "trick" (I really hope it stays like that), but have to admit that I did not use TomTom since then. When thinking back when my card got corrupt (4 times all together) I was using TomTom all these days when it happened.
I have only installed TomTom on the card and its been fine for the last week. But to me this isn't a solution as I want 2gb of storage, I'm just scared to load stuff again, but I will this weekend and see how it goes
Mem: SanDisk 2GB
Phone: O2 Orbit
i am using a sandisk ultra2(!!!) 2Gb card in my hero(german) running the tmouk wwe rom and do not experience any problems whatsoever.
there is something definitely up with the orbit (maybe other variants as well) and micro sd. I have a kingston 1gb SD and i am getting the funny characters on folders. Do a soft reset and it's fine, doesn't take long for the gibberish to return though

My Solution Remove totally Tom Tom from my Artemis ..
I know there's some mention of GPS lock problems etc... around the various threads, but I wanted to create one to pull together people's experience of the various Sat Nav programs that are available and how they run on the TP2.
I've got TT7 installed (used to run it on my TyTNII), and it all works fine, gets a lock quickly, but the lag is REALLY bad on it. It's constantly a good 20-30 metres behind where I am (used to be may 5 metres tops on the TyTNII).
What have people found with other programs such as CPL etc... Is the problem with TT7, or is it with the TP2?
iGo 8
Hi there,
I had iGo 8 working perfectly on the Kaiser/TYTN II but I cant even get it to start in the TP2, does anyone have any ideas?
I can load the software on but when I launch it just goes back to the home page :-(
hello,
for my tp2 the igo8 works absolutely great
iG0 8
May I ask how you installed it?, did you just go to the 2577 folder and click Autorun?, or did you install from a disk?
Hi MegaHz,
Would you be able to tell me how you installed it please?, I need iGo 8 for work and it would be really useful to have it on this phone, it's awesome!
Thank you
I have run CPL6 (I don't have later versions). It runs in perfect WVGA with no issues at all ... inc GPS reception.
Paul.
Co Pilot 7
They're selling Co Pilot 7 with the Touch Pro 2 on Handtec.co.uk so that must be compatible, if I cant get iGo 8 to work I may have the purchase this instead :-(
Does anyone have any comparison of the two?, which do you guys prefer?
Ive got TTN7 Installed on mine and it works perfectly, no lag at all.
A very cool new feature is if you have a BT car kit you can set all system sounds etc to come through the car kit so TomTom now comes through my speakers in the car.
Excellent.
Hmmnnnn, not good then, I wonder if my TP2 gps chipset is knackered?
Whats it like in Google Maps if you zoom right in? Is it somewhere near where you actually are?
Mine is almost perfect, shockingly good.
I'll check later when I can get out of the office
my google maps is way out it thinks im actually in the village.
i think that maybe my issue is not accuracy, but refresh rate? when stationary, it picks out my location well (although tom tom can still jump about a bit then) but google maps gets me for sure. when moving, they both often lose themselves for a bit before coming back to the right location.
do i need to set up the baud rate manually or something to get data back to the apps quicker? tom tom was much faster in my tytnII.
I'm thinking of buying a TP2 but the GPS lag problem from the first TP is a real concern. Can any Igo8 users on the TP2 confirm whether there is any discernible lag at normal driving speeds? Also, how long does it take to get a fix in open outdoor conditions?
I've been using an Eten Glofish M700 for the last couple of years and it has an exceptional Sirf III GPS receiver (fixes within a minute, and no lag at all). I want a new phone but don't want to take a backward step with GPS performance.
I am running TT 7.915 and While it manages to keep my location fine, it doesn't update it for about 2-3 seconds, which can mean I get lost on big roundabouts!
I had this on my TyTNII....
If you just get lag, that could be a couple of things - what class is your sd card (I upgraded to a class 6 card and it ran a lot better), and do you have loads of POIs (disabling POIs also increases the refresh rate a lot).
From reading around, it seems that TT7 just isn't particulalry compatible with the TP2 (the problem being, TT 7 was only officially released for one or two specific PPC devices so I've no doubt if you tell them it won't run on the TP2, they'll say that it was never meant to!).
I'm thinking of trying CoPilot Live, but I'm concerned that I may have a GPS issue wince even with Google Maps, it does occasionaly completely lose itself for a few seconds before coming back to my actual location, so I wonder if there's an issue on the phone.
I used to use TTN6. but now cant decide weather to upgrade or go to co pilot. Cant seem to find a comparison of the two

I use iGO 8.3.2 on TP2. It is a lot better (2 day testing) than TP, which was almost unusable without tweaking. Very small GPS lag (a little lag I think is normal), cold start under 1min. More than happy. Problem solved.
I got my TP2 for a week now and I really love it!
Yesterday I tried to run TomTom 7 (this did run before) and since then I get the message:"Unable to start. Not enough memory is available."
Does this sound familiar to you? What memory is meant here? I suppose the RAM, because I have freed up some space on the device and on the storage card. Further no applications are running. I also tried doing a soft reset before starting TomTom.
Any help would be appreciated!

hi I had this on my diamond and I found if I deleted my maps and then reinstalled them all was well for me.
I hope this helps you
So that would mean if I delete the maps it should be able to start again? (Of course displaying no maps where found) I just tried it and that doesn't work.
First I'm copying the maps back to the device again. Let's see what happens!
No, unfortunately that doesn't solve the problem.
If I have some time left I will uninstall and reinstall.
The TomTom uses less than 20mb of ram. There should be plenty left.
A re-install should fix your problem.

I think 20mb is a bit much. To illustrate, i'm running it right now on my Treo 700Wx and before i launched it i had 18mb free program memory (other apps running as well) and right now since running TomTom 7 it's dowm to 11mb (so about 7mb has been used up by TomTom).
At the most it only ever uses as much as 10mb on my puny 3yr old Treo 700Wx.
i have another problema with tomtom(v.7.915) with tomtom installed can't connect me to my computer using activesync in bluetooth.any idea?
hmmm, anyone tried entering a city or something using the HW keyboard? Mine inserts an extra character after every keypress, even the shift key. Kinda makes it impossible to enter using the KB.
i had this when i had both the tom tom program and map on my storage card
i have tom tom on the device and my map on the storage card root location named with the name of the map for the folder
Western_Europe_1GB_830_2306
and it works fine
im struggling to get speed cams installed

Have you tried this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=522373
It was posted in the Tips and Tricks sticky at the top of this section
This is interessting: I've uninstalled TomTom and reinstalled it. No luck!
However: if I start TomTom from the folder Programmabestanden\Navigator it DOES work!
It only doesn't start if I use the shortcut in the windows\start menu folder.

I seem to remember I had this problem on my Raphael/Touch Pro. Not sure but there may be a HW keyboard fix if you check out the forums over there. Whether or not it will work for the Rhodium/TP2 though is another thing. For me, it's not a problem to use the SW keyboard though.
i just soft reset or use cleanram before using tomtom. The problem is the leaky memory in the original Rhodium ROM. A new cooked ROM will most likely solve this one they become available
Hi,
i read a lot of posts about getting TomTom 7 to work and how it is not working on the TP2. HTC offers a 15 day trial of Copilot which supposedly works on the TP2. You can check it out at http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportViewNews.aspx?dl_id=595&news_id=185. I think it could be a nice and working alternative for a full blown navigation system on the TP2. Still better than trying all kinds of dubious fixes and hacks to get TT7 to work. Maybe it's something for you
Jan
What ever - say good bye to TT because of the procedure which you have to do when you change the device
I installed Garmin Mobile XT the other night, works well.
I really like how you can search on a street name and not have to put in the city first like tomtom makes you (so many times i couldnt find where i wanted to goto cause tomtom had it in some weird city)
Anyway, works really well...
Just going to have a look at tweaking it for better response later, as it seemed to pause a second before updating at intersections.
After buying TomTom Navigator 7 retail (on SD card) and finding it wan't install at all on my TP2, tried and finally registered Copilot 7: very happy with it, works fine on TP2 with no GPS delay
I downloaded the trial, and will give it a shot at the weekend.
It`s very wird for me what u all saing. For me Tom Tom ver. 7.19 working with no problem at all. I just bought my tp2, even did`t do hard reset, i did`t do anything, and tom tom works strait after instal it.
We are talking about the retail version of TT7 preinstalled on 4 GB microSD card: it refuses to install on any device that isn't on the official list, like Diamond and Raphael (tried unsuccessfully on TP2 and Xperia X1).
I am using TT6 Navigator (same version that was on my P3300) due to the lack of maps for North America.
I needed to install WVGAFIX3 before I was able to view TT6 correctly though.
I found that Copliot works fine, but can be quite innacurate at times. If I'm driving on a road that's next to a motorway, it can sometimes jump me onto the motorway which I never found with TomTom. The lag is not _too_ bad, but it's still not great, just better tham TT7.
I've just installed a trial for Navigon, and I have to say, it's more polished than CoPilot, and smoother than TT7, although there is still some lag which is REALLY beginning to frustrate me
I found Copilot to be quite inaccurate as well in my recent tests. I am downloading Navigon now and giving it a shot.
Hmm navigon 7 is constantly freezing the device. Which version did you install?
Managed to get it to work with the files provided for the Xperia http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443453. It looks pretty crappy as the graphics have not been adapted to WVGA, but In the end the navigation counts
Its a hellofalot faster than copilot anyways.
Too bad, there is not uninstall capability (copilot live downloaded from HTC support) when you done with the trial. So end up you have to delete the folder manually and not good cause it will stay at your registry.
Luckily I have a full backup before install this.
I use to be a TomTom user and always had problems finding the GPS unit if the GPS hadn’t been previously activated. I use to load either Goggle maps or Live Search, let the program active the GPS unit and then load TomTom, this worked 100% of the time.
I'm now a VERY happy Garmin XT user. No problem with finding the internal GPS unit, fast loading and very quick contact address search.
I did a two day test run with Copilot and Navigon and I found Navigon to be the much better solution. Copilots behaviour was erratic at best, it jumped between cities and even when it worked it was slow as hell and inaccurate. Navigon worked just fine and was fast and accurate as well so I'll stick to that one.
Ah and I had to manually kill Copilot as well as no uninstaller was there.
copilot 6 on touch pro 2
didnt want to start a new thread so i have resurrected this one. does anyone know if copilot 6 will work on the touch pro 2 (WM6.1). looked everywhere online but no answer. it seems i am the only broke dude trying to run such an old program on a shiny new device. (excuse is i,m waiting for copilot 8)
If copilot 6 did work it wouldn't look pretty - I ran my existing CP7 on the TP2 and the higher screen resolution distorted everything - personally having the wrong aspect ratio on things drives me up the wall so I found it pretty distracting.
Kudos to ALK support though, I emailed them asking about an upgrade of CP7 to CP7-HD (which does support the TP2) and they sorted it out for me without charge.
Thanks matey. Wont bother installing then. I didnt want to go through the stress of installing it and finding out it didnt work or look good. I actually bought copilot 7 HD but returned it cos it didnt say HD on the pack. I was also going to download it from ALK,s website but I thought, what the heck its almost 2 years old, Copilot 8 will be released soon so I,ll wait for that.
Cheers
CP7 loaded just fine on my TP2, and works (even in landscape mode), but it's method of telling you the routing is questionable (missed several turns and junctions, really disconcerting, the map's right, just the audio feedback seems stuffed to hell and back), and the less said about it's handling of things like POI and safety camera files from other sources is best left unsaid, or I'll go into foul language mode (seven %*£&%$ notifications after the other for each £%&$%* camera?!)...

You don't need a card adaptor per se, I installed it on a usb memory stick and copied it later to the sd card on my TP2.
