the lifedrive has 4gb of memory which is great, so why do we keep being fed the same old rubbish of 128mb????????
ok so i can go and buy a 2gb sd card for my xda 11i but that doesnt benefit o2 or the phone manufacturer...........
i would rather pay £50 more for more memory than buy extra cards!!!!
or am i missing something????
archos have 60 80gb systems!!!
im pee'd off with being fed this rubbish of 64mb and 128mb...... this is 2005 for gods sake!!!!
does anyone agree with me????
Some processors only support a certain amount of memory and I see systems that will support only 256 megs as external memory. Also you have the problem with "marketing", to look for any logic there would be fruitless unless you apply it to profits. I have been using xda, xda 2, ipaqs etc for a long time. I use all my phones/pda's for navigation but have been very disappointed with memory constraints plus other problems. I have just bought a "dedicated" gps and mp3 player. Its a Mitac 269 and its based on win ce.net 4.2 core. It has an sd slot for added memory but has internal storage ram of 64 meg and an integrated 2.5 gig hard disk. This allows street mapping for whole of UK plus major roads of europe. 500 megs is available for the built in mp3 player also. The best thing is that it isnt as "dedicated" as it appears. I have found a patch that unlocks the system so it can be used as a normal pda and will also use activesync instead of the mitac sync software. This is all contained in a 200 gramm package with a beautiful color screen and numerous shortcut buttons. The lifedrive uses similar technology with its 4 gig hard drive so maybe you wont be waiting much longer for your wishes to come true on other ranges. By the way, because the mio 269 I bought had no accessories I got it for £100, normal price is approx £350..

I used to have an I-mate JasJar and I loved it!
The reason I sold the device is becouse it had only 64 MB of ram and that was not quiet enough for me!
However, if it is at all possible to uppgrade to 128 MB or even to 256 MB, I would buy a new one in an instant!
So please tell me, is it possible?
Also I would like to know if I can use a sdhc memory card so I can have at least 8 GB of memory, would be cool!
The reason I am asking for this is becouse I love the device and I especially LOVE the keybord!
I bought an HTC Advantage, and I think that the keybord sucks on that device!
I'm going to update my qtek9000 to 128M soon I hope it will work well, I will update you after I will do it.
Regards the SDHC, I'm using 16G SDHC and its working just great.
128Mb
Hello,
I have a 128 Mb Uni and it's wonderfull for me, a new Universal, more stability, quick response, no more soft reset, big games launch ...I also use 8 Gb SDHC without problems.
Thats great guys!
Then I will watch out for a new device to buy!
Oh, buy the way, how is watching videos on the device?
Is it lagging (skipping frames) or is it working ok?
I live in Sweden, do you think if I buy that someone else can do the uppgrade for me? I am not good at this!
Also would like to know if it would be possible to uppgrade to 256MB of ram instead of 128MB? (That would really be GREAT!
Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone!
I now have a I-Mate JasJar and I love it!
However, it is a 64 mb unit and I am considering the upgrade!
So I wanted to ask everyone that has already done the upgrade if they think it was worth it?
Also I would like to know where you can see the improvment the most?
I like Nav n go Igo 8 navi program and my device clearly
does not have enough memory to run it properly, will it help to do the upgrade or is it so that the graphic card is not quiet up for the challenge to be able to show 3d terrain and everything else in Igo8?
So basicly I want some coments from you guys, what works after the upgrade and what does not work?
For me I am considering either to do the upgrade or to buy the Touch pro when it cames out, but the thing is that I like this device to much to sell it!
So is there any hope for it? Is it going to be as good as the rest of the devices that has more memory (like tytn II), or is it just not worth it?
Oh and buy the way, I do own a tytn II so I know all about the missing drivers and stuff, the fact that it has a gps is great but somehow I dont mind that my universal does not have gps becouse I have an external gps anyway and it is much better then the built in gps in tytn II!
not get mine upgraded yet but I won't even though the xda exec might be stronger and faster / more stable? I have no idea but I never want mine to be disassembled or replaced sth. I want it to be still original and untouched inside, I love software and OS modding but no hardware modding seem to be interesting to me.
Well, I have send my Qtek9000 yesterday to the shop in Germany to get it upgraded...
Why, becose I am running IGO8 and have not enough Ram to run it properly.
I hope it solves the problems I have running IGO8 like the 3D map wich somethimes dissapears after a while...
I let you know my experience after the upgrade...!
Actually, if you install many softwares then ROM is more important because even though you can install the softwares to the memory card but many programs would install either in part on in full to the ROM
You'll reach a stage whereby you cannot install programs even to the memory card because you'll face 'Storage Memory Low' error
I wonder whether it's possible to upgrade the ROM too say to 512MB?

Don't know if you are familiair with the memory of computers, but...
See the SD-card as the harddisk. That's clear.
See the ROM as memory that you cannot use for your own (exceptions are Flash and extended memory, but those are 'hard disks' too)
So, all 'hard disks' are used to store stuff onto. This can be programs, images, databases, whatever.
See the RAM as usable program memory (the RAM of your computer - might be 1Gb or 2Gb or 4Gb)
The 128MB is RAM, so only to be used as program memory, memory used while running programs.
Each program that is installed costs NO RAM, except when you (or the OS) run it. Drivers only consume program memory when they are loaded.
So, installing eg. a large game won't change anything to your RAM.
Most programs can be installed to SD. Only a few cannot. However, often can be tweaked (eg. Opera, Wisbar) to run from SD without any problem.
I would very much like to have 128MB too... I was under the impression that the store in Germany would not do this anymore (it is not on their web site)
So, CFDS, when you get the Universal back, please inform us of its state!
RE
I think you're mistaken
I'm referring to the storage memory vs the program memory.
The Uni has 128 MB Flash ROM and 64 MB SDRAM. Similarly, the SAMSUNG SGH i900 has 256 MB Flash ROM and 128 MB SDRAM
Here's the spec for the Uni (QTEK 9000)
http://www.qtek.nu/europe/products/9000/specifications.aspx
Are they really doing the upgrade?

Thanks for your reply, yes Igo8 is why I am considering the upgrade myself!
Please let me know when you get your device back, I would really like to know how it works with Igo8!
Also I would like to know to what shop in Germany you sent your device?
The only shop I know of is this: http://www.srsgmbh.de/en/index1.html and I dont see that they can do the upgrade anywhere on their site!
I wrote them an email asking them if they can do it and what the cost will be, but so far I have not recieved any answer!
Is this the shop you are reffering to or do you know of any other in Germany that will do the upgrade?
Also do you know what the price should be and how long it should take?
Thanks in advance!
Please confirm this?

Ok, so you mean that if one does the RAM upgrade one will not get more PROGRAM MEMORY?
Please confirm this, it would really be shame to spend money on the upgrade only to not recieve any additional "program memory" which I think is equaly important!
I tought that by doing the upgrade it will be equalent to a Tytn II device both in "RAM" and in "program memory"! So please confirm this!
Thanks in advance!

As I mentioned the Uni has 128 MB Flash ROM and 64 MB SDRAM. If you do a RAM upgrade you'll get 128MB SDRAM and that means you'll have MORE program memory but your storage memory remains the same at 128 MB Flash ROM
For comparison, I've taken a look at the SAMSUNG SGH i900 running WM 6.1 at its default installation and found that the FREE storage memory is about 30+ to 50+ MB. If you're the type who wants to install many programs then I think this amount is inadequate. The SONY EXPERIA X1 might be a good alternative giving 512 MB ROM and 256 MB RAM.
FI, my QTEK 9000's FREE storage memory is about 3 MB so can't do software installation even to the SD card because I'm facing the 'Storage Memory Low' error during installation of programs
Program memory is important for program running. Generally, if you do have 20 -30 MB of FREE program memory it's adequate to run most programs smoothly. However, certain programs may require more to ensure stability and smooth running.
Yes, this is the shop I send my Qtek to in Germany: http://www.srsgmbh.de/en/index1.html
He confirmed a couple of weeks ago that he's able to do the Ram upgrade on the Qtek9000. He charges 119€ for the upgrade and it would take a week excluding shipping...
Can hardly wait to get it back...!
How did you send it?

Ok I understand now, but is there a way of upgrading the storage memory as well or is it just possible to upgrade RAM?
Also does anyone know if 128 MB Ram is the limit or is it possible to upgrade even more, perhaps 256 MB?
Thanks
Info on the 128Mb Upgrade
I have do the 128Mb upgrade to my Uni. Was it worth it, well that depends, I think it was for me. You will not notice any big change in app loading speeds, but if you are running heavy weight app's like sat nav were you see lock ups or 'low resource' warnings them yes it is wroth it. It wont get you any more stroage space but it does give you more program running space.
Currently 128Mb is the max M-RAM that can be fitted to the Uni, I beleive due to ROM image limitations. The chips are also obsolite and can be hard to get hold of have a look at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Universal_128_Shop for places that sell and upgrade. To do it yourself will require specialist equipment, so unless you know what is involved get it done for you.

Have you or do you plan on testing your upgraded uni with Igo8 to see if it works properly? That is why I am considering the upgrade in the first place so it is very important for me to know if it works or not!
Thanks in advance!
I enclosed a letter in the shipment(registered mail) which explained my request, contained all details from my PDA and personal details. I also send him an e-mail with the same request...
Lets hope that all goes well!!!
Ciao!

Really? How can I get it upgraded to 256 mb?
Just think about it, 256 mb on universal, how cool is that?
If you are going to run Igo8 on your Uni then the answer to the question is YES, get the upgrade done.
Received my Qtek back today from its Ram upgrade...
86,5mb free of prog mem after reset...
Tried iGO8 on it...it used up to 65mb of prog memory but it ran very smooth...had all selected-3D building/terrain etc...
So far after 2X 30 min of usage/navigating I did not lost my 3D map...will see how it behaves when I use it for an 2.5hrs/250km trip...
That is GREAT news!

Hey guys!
I noticed in the specifications of this phone, it claims to have 0.50gb of RAM (512mb) However all your kernels are around 370 of under?
Is this mistake in the specifications or are you lowering Ram for some strange reason unknown to me?
I'm using liquid smooth build#2 at the moment, but i'm only getting around 99mb free Ram.. I don't know why but it seems the Phone has less Ram then i initially thought.. However, i don't have any scripts going at the moment, i don't need battery, so any " and it's good on battery " will be respectively ignored.
I have looked around but not really found a decent enough set up for this phone yet.. Can someone please recommend me a kernel for 4.2.2 which is fast, and responsive, but also one with good Ram?
And can someone recommend some scripts worth using with this Phone? Again, don't go on about battery or SD life or phone life, idc about it, it's a spare phone..
Thanks in advance guys, could you provide me with links as well if it's not too much trouble? I prefer being directed straight to the point so i don't end up using the wrong Kernel/script..
Edit1: I'm not changing Rom. At all. unless you get an updated Carbon or 4.3.

Seems noone is willing to reply, but this probably because some searching and logical thinking would answer your questions. So since you are not willing to do it yourself others don´t mind replying to you.
So well I don´t use any scripts but regarding RAM size think about it. If you buy a PC with lets say 2GB installed RAM. Will you get also 2GB free ram by running an Operating System on it?

If you were to purchase 2gb of ram likelyhood is you will recieve 1.59+- usable Ram, free Ram would be totally different, however the way it was presented, and the way i portrayed it was thet the Ramdisk of the kernel was at 370+-, rather then 512.. I'm using a Desire C, which is running CM10 with 300mb free ram, with a 512mb ram disk, whereas with hurtskys kernel 3.0.x i get 99mb free? on 4.2.2 on my golfu i got 270mb free ram, and that was a Rom of 250mb+ and it's only at 767mhz.. yet seems smoother then the SGW? :s On paper it should be the other way around..
dun think u should worry about free ram.
android is based on linux, linux memory concept is different from other OS.
it something like " free memory is waste memory".
memory is always filled and hold so tat it wont waste time to reload.
if need more memory, system will free memory for other usage.
maybe this will help explain better, http://www.linuxatemyram.com/

You should first read what a ramdisk is. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ramdisk
The 270+MB in hurtskys or my kernel is the real RAM aviable. The rest is reserved for the ROM, camera, drivers and processes to work correctly.
Hi, I would like to buy the cheap version (2GB RAM 16GB ROM) but I am afraid not to have a community to help me to "improve" it.
What I need is basically some future update and very important be able to root it.
What do u suggest?

Why?
PS: I had to edit it cuz it missed "rooted".
GSM-Arena says the minimum RAM is 3 GB and the minimum storage is 32 GB, max is 4 GB and 128 GB and that's what I relied on. But then somewhere else I saw the specs you mentioned. I know Android hasn't used SD card memory well in the past. Music and apps and DRM-protected downloads were tied to internal memory and so 32 GB of internal memory was a minimum for me. But since Marshmallow those limits on SD storage are (supposedly) lifted and/or debugged.
So, I dunno. Try it, buying from a place that allows returns, and post what happens.

I'm not going to root mines any. But I haven't found any support forums. But I'm sure it'll happen
I would go with the 32 GB version as youâ??ll get 1 extra gig of ram. Miui used quite a bit of it. I run mi max with miui 8 beta. Phone has been on for about a day. And I've got about 600 GB of ram free. I don't really use ram cleaner as it can mess with Androids memory managment. With two gigs of ram I think there will be more apps that get purged from memory i.e worse multitasking. Also the extra storage is kind of sweet.
I would not go for the snapdragon 652. Even though its a beast. Remember that its a bigLittle SoC. So during normal operation the 4x a53 cores will do most of the work. The two extra a72 cores wont really make that much of a difference. Games are still single threaded.. The only motivation is the 4gb of ram and the bigger e-penis.
