What version should I Buy? - Xiaomi Mi Max Questions & Answers

Hi, I would like to buy the cheap version (2GB RAM 16GB ROM) but I am afraid not to have a community to help me to "improve" it.
What I need is basically some future update and very important be able to root it.
What do u suggest?

There isn't one

Why?
PS: I had to edit it cuz it missed "rooted".

GSM-Arena says the minimum RAM is 3 GB and the minimum storage is 32 GB, max is 4 GB and 128 GB and that's what I relied on. But then somewhere else I saw the specs you mentioned. I know Android hasn't used SD card memory well in the past. Music and apps and DRM-protected downloads were tied to internal memory and so 32 GB of internal memory was a minimum for me. But since Marshmallow those limits on SD storage are (supposedly) lifted and/or debugged.
So, I dunno. Try it, buying from a place that allows returns, and post what happens.

Sorry for my english!
I saw a lot of post about Helium and Hydrogen but no one for the 2GB version. I am afraid to buy it and not be able to find a way to root it or flash a new rom (eg Cyanogen)...

I'm not going to root mines any. But I haven't found any support forums. But I'm sure it'll happen

I would go with the 32 GB version as youâ??ll get 1 extra gig of ram. Miui used quite a bit of it. I run mi max with miui 8 beta. Phone has been on for about a day. And I've got about 600 GB of ram free. I don't really use ram cleaner as it can mess with Androids memory managment. With two gigs of ram I think there will be more apps that get purged from memory i.e worse multitasking. Also the extra storage is kind of sweet.
I would not go for the snapdragon 652. Even though its a beast. Remember that its a bigLittle SoC. So during normal operation the 4x a53 cores will do most of the work. The two extra a72 cores wont really make that much of a difference. Games are still single threaded.. The only motivation is the 4gb of ram and the bigger e-penis.

[Q] Can you increase the data.img on evo to 1GB data storage?

ok just got a evo and thinking of making the switch officail from tmobile hd2 now on the hd2 android roms you can increase the data.img size to default 512 MB, 1 GB or in some cases 2 GB allowing you to install more apps on to your phone, I was wondering if the same thing was possible to do with the evo I like to have a lot of apps on my phone so if someone could point me in the right direction i would really appreciate it.
11 views and not one answer seriously someone has to know the answer to this and yes i have searched and found nothing
Forums are kind of dead on the weekends.
I haven't seen anything like that for the evo since it's 512ram/512rom.
We have apps to sd - basically you can move your apps to the SD card, which is normally bigger than the ram/rom.

Obviously you can't increase it its the built in Rom space.
You can use apps to SD (a2sd) on some roms that partitions your card and puts apps on it.
yeah sorry about that and I just know on the HD2 android which I have been using on tmobile you can increase the data.img size up to 1 GB which allows you to install way more apps on your android

that is because on your HD2, the data.img file resides on the memory card, which is likely 8GB or larger, so that increase in size is possible. On the Evo, the data.img is stored on the internal ROM, which has a physical capacity of 512MB, so we have already reached the maximum capacity...

Those are the correct specs. They are the same that HTC, Sprint, and now Google have always advertised. 1 GB Rom and 512 MB Ram.
As to the OP, you may be able to change the partitions some, especially if you clean up the system partition, but it would require building a new ROM and flashing it. At least, that's the only way I know of to repartition your NAND.
Oh, and you probably won't recover way too much memory to the data partition. Probably no more than you free in system by removing some unnecessary built in apps like Quickoffice.

I know this is an old, dead thread, but if someone is searching and comes across the OP's question, here is the answer.

16 vs. 32 GB and ROMs

Is anyone having trouble deciding on 16 vs 32GB configurations? Mainly because of the difference in RAM, with 16/2GB and 32/3GB.
Is there a difference in ROM building based on these versions? Or will all ROMs work the same on both versions? Do any other phones have the same thing, having different amounts of RAM? Not sure if I need the extra GB, but I'll have to see what ROMs support first...
This is all hardware. How in any way would it affect software? It just lets people who need more space for music (like me) to have more internal storage and 1 gb more of RAM which is also really good for people who want speed. For those who just use their phone once in a while, they can buy the 16 GB 2 GB RAM one. It all depends on preference.
32gb
I would recommend 32 gb as all the media files will be bigger due to the resolution. With LG's software there will only be 10~11gb of space left for the user

I agree with you about the 32GB model but not for media files. They can go on external SD card right? 128GB on top of 16 will still do for media files.

Oh right, the g3 will have an sd slot. I'd still go for the 32gb for apps (making the files install on the ext sd is a hassle and the apps won't run when you take the sd out)
Wanting to push this thread because i have the same question... I want to see some roms on the g3. But there is still no answer if there is a difference between 2gb and 3gb in building roms.
No problem here...32gb all the way.
Why would anyone choose 16/2 when you have the option of more storage and ram...makes zero sense.
Always buy the better option!

3gb version all the way!
What is the model number for the 3gb version and where can one buy it.....?
I'm okay with 16 GB of RAM. It wasn't an issue on my Nexus 4 and it isn't an issue on my Nexus 5 and 7. Besides, with an SD card slot, storage isn't an issue.
However, given the option between 2 GB of RAM and 3 GB, I'd go with 3. Always go with more RAM when you have the option.
Problem is that I am in the UK, so only 16gb coming as far as we know. That means I need to compromise on my storage. It will be a hassle to often move my camera pic and videos to SD card, and Whatsapp doesnt allow it.
I dont know which other data intensive apps will also have issues if i try to move to SD card....bit of a minefield.
Any tips would help ?
Shall I just forget about the 16gb version and get a different phone (I do like the look of this one however) ?
Hi all just want to know how much space left available can be used if i take LG G3 16GB ? Thanks

I would guess 10 to 11 gb of space for the apps and data that cannot be moved to the SD card. For me, this will consist of a few apps (metro newspaper eats loads of space !) , and lots of camera pics and videos (high resolution) and loads of whatsapp pics and videos (whatsapp stuff cannot be moved to sd either)
......that is why i am avoiding getting the 16gb version - LG are such s**theads for not selling the 32gb in the UK...makes me so angry !
I sent an email to LG UK support and as expected, they could only tell me that at present the 32gb is not announced for the UK, nor do they know if it will be or when, blah blah blah !!
I already preordered the 32GB version because
- apps getting bigger like GTA
- Offline Navigation like Navigon need alot of space
- Taking pictures and Videos
at least LG sells the 32GB here. HTC won't sell the 32gb M8 and S5 also not available as 32 GB
perfect would be a G3 with 64 GB internal memory

32gb or 16gb

Hey guys
I am considering getting the G3 and theres about £50 difference between 32 and 16gb version, is the 3gb/32gb actually worth it? Seen some tests and the difference was hardly noticable...anybody has any experience with both versions and could compare?
Thanks!
I don't have the link handy but a review was done with both versions, and the benchmarks were nearly the same. With microsd support, I'd see no reason just for another 1gb of ram personally.

Every android phone I've ever had from 256kb to 2gb has eventually needed more memory. More memory means you can run more, cache more and be future proof. If your only keeping the phone for a year, then 2gb will probably be fine, if keeping for 2 years then I would get the 3gb version
Not exactly sure what 50 euros is in usd but if it's any where from 50-100 it's well worth it imo, especially since you get a sdcard & ram upgrade.
2gb ram has been the flagship standard for a while now, my HTC one gets pretty close to full ram usage at some points. More ram guarantees smooth performance for heavy usage as well as future proof specs, and don't forget the g3 has that qhd resolution and once higher (than 1080p) resolution videos become more common you'll be glad you went with the extra ram.
well the 16gb version, not sure what batch is it and where is it imported from(assuming Korea) goes for 1950 PLN = 373.8150 GBP according to google while the 32gb version which is imported from Korea goes for 2250 PLN = 431.3250 GBP so yeah not a big difference but still.
The thing is that I dont really play games on a mobile, most of the time I would just use it for browsing, mail, facebook, gps/maps, apps and camera damn, decisions decisions...

Personally I would just save the money and buy the 16gb and get a massive SD Card instead. I doubt there is any noticeable difference in performance unless you have a gizillion apps open at the same time. In fact I remember reading an article where an LG employee says the phone is optimised to run on 2GB RAM.
The only reason I can think of to get the 32GB version is if you do not plan on getting an SD Card, then the extra storage is definately worth it. And maybe resale value will be higher...

I think the extra on board storage is, now, very important as, in the up to date google builds, moving app data to sd is very restricted.

Unless you root...
But even so, internal storage is better than SD card for many reason (ease of use, speed)
I picked the 32GB from Germany, very happy I did so.
Get the one with 3gb ram, I can't believe they are still releasing phones with 2gb ram.
I have a Z1 and since I started using a custom launcher whenever I have some apps open and press the home button the homescreen redraws and it's not nearly as quick as before.
Also some apps don't stay cached when I reopen them.
The G3 with its massive resolution should eat even more ram.

I've just read a review here http://pclab.pl/art58419-7.html where they've tested the 2gb version and said it lags a lot, the CPU and GPU gets hot a lot, that it would be better if there was full HD than QHD, that the screen dims weirdly and that the screen gets this weird sharpening effect....
christ I dont know what to do :/ z2 is nice but it has a lot of issues, one's camera isnt good enough these days, g3 3gb is probably most future proof but the more I read about it the more doubts I get...

True, guess it depends on what you use your phone for. I don't do any gaming so the app data space isn't that large.
If the difference in price is ok then it makes sense to get the 32GB I suppose. Here in Singapore, only the 32GB version is available and only S$755 sim-free which is relatively cheap for a new flagship phone.
I'm still deciding whether to get this or the G2 which is only S$520 now!
I'm planning to buy the 32gb version. What I like to know is if the custom roms will be different or will they all be suitable for this version?

Hi,
I have got both phones at the moment (Model D855) and I would strongly suggest you spend the the extra few bucks on tthe 32GB phone. Not as much for the ROM but for the RAM. Today I have installed the same apps on both phobes after rooting them and installing TWRP recovery and the difference is very obvious especially when having several apps open in the background. Although many phones could do perefctly with the amount of RAM the 16 GB model offers, I think there is a difference in this phonbes screen specs. This fabulous screen asks a lot of capacity which I think is the reason the 16 GB version gets very leggy. It's better if you reboot every now and then but I recon you'd get very anoyed at having to do that 3 times a day.
The price difference is big enough to go for the 16 GB version. You'll most prbably regret in a few months.
I have the 2 GB version no problem

I have the 16g d855 my phone now runs at 300mb free ram i bought it for 380 euro and the 32gb was for 500+ so the difference was big. So if you have that money go for 32 a test on youtube on benchmarking both versions shows that 32gb is 5-7% faster and the results proofs that.

[Q] 16GB or 32GB?

hi all,
i currently own a Galaxy s3 and i would like to switch to LG G3, but i'm a bit confused about the two different version of the device. The additional 1 GB of ram with has the 32GB worth the much money they want? And what about the modders that have bought the phone: it is going to be a great modding support (like my gs3 has)? and if i buy the 32gb version, can i install rom created for the 16gb version or i have to wait for someone to "convert" them? thank you in advance :fingers-crossed:

16 and 32GB version share the same version number and firmware, so I think any mod for one will apply to the other as well.
Now the question whether it's worth the money difference is subjective of course, you have to weight how much 16gb of internal storage is valuable to you (bearing in mind you can add additional storage with an SD card although of course it's not the same). It is valuable to me as I install a lot of games and I don't want to have to find workaround to move them to the SD card which is slower, so I got the 32gb version, but I don't think the extra 1gb RAM is making much of a difference. I have zero problem with mine and am very happy with it, I guess I would still be happy with the 16gb version.

well, actually the problem isn't the internal memory (i don't play games with my phone) but the ram, because i don't change phones that often (once in two years) and i'm afraid that "only" two gigs of ram could make my phone obsolete before the "planned" two-years use.
thank again for replies :fingers-crossed::laugh:

6GB or 8GB RAM?

Does anyone know the difference with performance on something with 6GB vs 8GB? Negligible you think?
I remember a side by side of the S8+ with 4GB vs 6GB.
I guess really for double the storage & an extra 2GB of RAM for $60 more, it's almost a no brainer.
However, i'm just trying to get an idea from those of you who know more about RAM in phones than I do to chime in.
I'm also guessing it's normal to bump the RAM every time you bump the storage. At least I am starting to see that in some newer phones, (don't see a 128GB 5T with 6GB) but not all. You don't see the Pixels like that (and still with 4GB).
Seems to be RAM is all over the place & I always thought cost was the factor, but if OP can do 6GB & 8GB it doesn't appear to be that.
well, in my opinion, 6GB of RAM is more than enough for the average user. but if you're really really looking for performance, pick the 8GB version, obviously.
why they even have a model with 6gb/64gb.
I've seen a few comparisons of both version of the OnePlus 5. The device with 8GB of RAM was able to keep many more apps in memory (obviously). This led to much fewer app redraws.
I chose the 8GB option, because I want this phone to last me 2 years, and I am thinking about what may be needed for Android P and Android Q updates/ROMs in the future
The 8GB is for "power" users who cycle through a lot of apps
128 GB is for people who have a lot of apps and record a lot of video/need to store a lot of data
This is what the head of OnePlus marketing said in an interview. I don't think the 8GB is meant for future-proofing the phone
As explained in the interview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v4_zhRWHwk4

I did see that interview. I know the intention is for power users, but it is my personal view that 8GBs will serve me better in the future, than 6GB.
I intend to use the phone for 2 years at least, and so if official updates stop after a year and a bit, I have the option to install a custom rom.
i'll go for the 64GB one, i currenlty have the OPO sandstone 64gb, and never handled to fill it. Also i dont really feel like 8gb ram are usefull atm...
8GB for me.
It's really 64gb vs 128 gb. 6 gb of ram is plenty. 8gb is for bragging rights only.

When the two were tested (side-by-side OnePlus 5), the 8GB model, naturally was able to keep many more apps in memory. Don't know if I would consider that bragging rights, but I would consider it better.

Totally agree. For $60 you get double the storage and 2 gb of extra ram, why not. I just think those of us who go 6GB of ram will be just fine.

I chose the 8GB option, because I want this phone to last me 2 years, and I am thinking about what may be needed for Android P and Android Q updates/ROMs in the future

I rather brag about the pricing of the 5T =P
I went with the 8GB/128GB model because the 4GB/64GB of the S8+ Dual Sim was a deal breaker for me. I currently have 2 Samsung S6's with 64GB storage. I needed all that space to hold all the data imported from the 2 phones and have the dual sim functionality. If the S8+ DS had a 128GB variant, I would've considered purchasing that instead.
If like myself you have several play lists, root, rom, keep nandroids and titanium backups, and video its 128GB.
