Has anyone attempted to port the OS onto the XDA yet?
I know this is still very early days - but I was so happy with by Yorch ROM kitchen WM2003 upgrade for my XDA1 - I was wondering whether we are likely to see the second edition upgrade here at some point.
Is anyone looking into the feasability - I know certain IPAQ devices have already been given the upgrade by the OEM and that certain models are not compatable due to ROM size??
Also - is there the possibility that the windows media centre mobile OS may make it onto the XDA?? I only ask because I have read that the 4gb microdrive from the muvo2 works in the backpack CF slot - byebye mini Ipod.
I know there are legal issues involved - but I am more interested in the logistical factors and possibilities at the moment?
Let me know what you think.
Jayman
i dont think that any of the 2003 versions were portet from another type of pda
they were as far as i know all based on 2003 versions beta and otherwise from tmobile, o2 and siemens
not sure if one could port a rom from like an ipaq
since it may have a different hardware
maybe O2?
I've read several time on the web that O2 will release the WM2003SE upgrade. Seriously. Don't know how reliable this info is though :?

I have an PPC with WPPC 2003 1st Edition. Can I upgrade to the WM2005? Can I use the instructions explained in the Himalaya section?
Thx @all Chris
Himalay ROMs are different from the Wallaby ROMs. So until now there is no WM2005 ROM available for the Wallaby --> No chance to upgrade....
HTH
Stefan
Thx that was fast
You said NOW there is no version?!?
What about Windows Mobile 5. It's out since last Friday. Is this different to the WM2005 Version? Cause it's mentioned that this new version is a common version for mostly all mobile devices?!?
Chris
Yeah, Windows Mobile 2005 is the same as Windows Mobile 5.0 (Magneto was it's codename).
And even though WM5.0 is "out" since Friday, that does not mean that it will be available to everyone and every device. Up until now, only Dell and HP have publicly announced it's plans to support SOME of it's high end devices, but not all of them.
And they say it's going to be a common OS for all Microsoft mobiles because WM5.0 apps will be compatible cross platform between Smartphones and Pocket PCs.
Is there any Mobile 2005 version out there who will work on a Qtek 8020 (runing Windows Mobile 2003 SE)?
non of the pocketpc htc devices can share rom and smartphones use a whole different family of cpu's
so unless qtek release it or leak it then there is no big chance of getting 2005 on your device
okay, but have Microsoft released a Smartphone version of mobile 2005?
ms dont release roms for devices such as pda's or phones with ms software on them they release a basic rom to the makers of the devices and they can give them for free or chage people for them or
do nothing if they'd rather have people buying new devices with the new os on
But why are the Pocket PC version out and not the Smartphone version?
Give the poor guy Rudiger a brake, he has answered 2 of your questions, he like most of us dont have a cristal ball nor do we work for microsoft.
Want to know more about the smartphone version then read the ms web page. Ask bill. Go to a smartphone site.
You cant buy 2005 on a cd, in shop or even on a device at this moment in time.
Sorry for asking... tought the meaning of forum like this is to get answers... but maybe not here...
But it is, just sometimes you get answers that may be you dont want to read, thats also the idea of forums.
Agree! Still can't find any sites where I can find information about how to buy or download WM2005... surfed all Mobile 2005 related MS sites, without finding any information... just have to wait for a new device with preinstaled WM2005... thanks...
Microsoft only releases WM2005 to mobile phone makers (such as HTC for our devices). It is then up to each company to choose to release an update for their old phones with it or to make new phones with it.
Microsoft has nothing to do with the end user.

Folks,
Sorry if this is real basic stuff, but hey we all gotta start somewhere!!
Work is buying me a O2 Orbit for some development (actually buying 2) and I have just a handful of questions that I'd really appreciate an answer.
1) Is The Artemis 3300 the same name for the 02 Orbit? I'm 99.9% it is, but some big-headed person I work with is causing all sorts of grief saying the phone must be a genuine Artemis 3300 and the Orbit is a cut down version. True or false?
2) Is the GPS on it Magellan / Garmin compliant?
3) OK, touchy one this, I'm hearing great reports about Crossbow and want to know if 'flashing' the WM5 ROM that comes with the O2 Orbit is legal or not (don't worry, I'm not clean cut, just don't want to cause any problems with the boss!). And likewise, if I mess up the installation, is it easy to revert back to WM5?
In a nutshell, we've a dozon or so bespoke programs for SmartPhones, all developed on a SPV M3000. These SPV's are getting old now, cracked, chipped, damaged and the O2 Orbit looks perfect (especially as we're just doing GPS stuff, hence why I ask if it's Magellan / Garmin compliant).
Whilst WM5 is still widespread, naturally it would be an advantage to use the latest technology and to ensure compatibility (have one Orbit running WM5 and the other running WM6), but obviously need some roll-back if things go wrong.
Would really appreciate some feedback before I make a purchase.
Cheers.

No, the orbit is not a cut down version

Its a std Pocket PC serial emulated GPS feed. All pocket PC software that works with WM5 would work.

O2 has not released an updated ROM for the Orbit, let alone an update to WM6 (crossbow). It is very unusual for providers to provide an update to a major version of Windows on a current model, so would assume this won't happen. Flashing an WM device with an unlicensed OS is technicaly not legal. In terms of reverting back, it is easy unless you have screwed the boot rom, in which case you have a new brick

There are two types of Pocket PC with phone functionality. Those that use the OMAP chipset, and those that use the Samsung/Intel chipset. The OMAP ones normally have more reliable phone sides (although this is changing with the latest Samsungs and Intels) but far slower for running applications (although, again, this is changing with the latest OMAP chipsets). The Orbit is an OMAP chipset, and although works well as a phone and GPS device, you should check whether any custom software runs at satisfactory speed.
Whilst WM5 is still widespread, naturally it would be an advantage to use the latest technology and to ensure compatibility (have one Orbit running WM5 and the other running WM6), but obviously need some roll-back if things go wrong.

Hi,
I am sorry if this has been covered in old posts but i am getting no where with o2 and the other UK operators.
I am due an upgrade with o2 now but i want to wait until XDAs have WM6 on them, Does anyone know what the first XDA will be released with WM6? When it will be released? Or will it ever be released? as O2 do not have a clue.
If any of the other network operators are bringing out there versions with WM6 the same questions apply as i will just move phone operators.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
i thought windows mobile 6 wasnt coming out till november? i might be wrong as i havent been on top of wm lately (im a symbian guy myself)
Not sure myself
I know Orange are releasing the SPV E650 in April. However it runs WM6 Standard and not professional (i.e. its a smartphone not a Pocket PC).
Would guess Pocket PC's should follow soon after but there are still quite a few WM5 based devices scheduled for a release.
Would say the best bet would be to hold on but if your iching to upgrade (i know i would be) then I would suggest getting a Hermes based device. I would say that it's one of the best HTC devices currently available and people are cooking WM6 ROMs on it already!!! Its also rumoured to be one of the few devices that will eventually have an official WM6 update.
S.K.
Hi i'm new to this forum so idon't know ifthis has been posted yet. I have a T-Mobile Pocket PC 2003. I would like to know if there is anyway to update the operating system to a newer one and what is involved with updating the ROM. Thank you for your time.

helps to know what make and model of phone you have, look on the main index page for your phone and look there, only certain pones can be upraded and the info you want is there.
T-mobile pocket pc 2003
thats not enough it pretty much the name of every windows mobile phone tmobile ever released and roms are unique for each model
they add naming like
mda or mdaII or mdaIII ....
Pardon my ignorance.
Is there a wm2002 phone? What is HP Jornada, wm2002?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jornada
and yes wallaby orginaly came with pocketpc 2002
about early windows CE phones then this was the first i saw
http://www.planetomni.com/GSM_SEMN_sx45_DTL.shtml
running not pocketpc but pure windows CE 3
I guess it would be the HTC wallaby. It looks exactly like that but it says "T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition" on it.
I can't really find much on it so I wasn't sure which phone it was.

Hi all:
Although I am not a developer, I have found this a great resource for info beyond other forums.
Like ziggy88, I went to the ROM KITCHEN and took a look.
I am using a Hitachi G1000 WM 2002 device on Sprint.
This last week I have found an abundance of info on this device and just before was was contemplating upgrading. With the new info I have found, I am going to hold off.
So, it is an Intel PXA255 XScale 400mhz processor.
Is that enough info to get started with getting a link to look into the posibility of upgrading the OS?
Thanks, Jay
roms are uniqe to a device and cant be used on other devices then the model it was made for 2 HTC devices cant even use the same rom if they are not the same model
not sure about your Hitachi but some of the pda's from Hitachi dident even have a flash rom but a hardcoded rom which can never be upgraded
