Qtek 8020 Smartphone - Upgrade to Mobile 2005? - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Is there any Mobile 2005 version out there who will work on a Qtek 8020 (runing Windows Mobile 2003 SE)?

non of the pocketpc htc devices can share rom and smartphones use a whole different family of cpu's
so unless qtek release it or leak it then there is no big chance of getting 2005 on your device

okay, but have Microsoft released a Smartphone version of mobile 2005?

ms dont release roms for devices such as pda's or phones with ms software on them they release a basic rom to the makers of the devices and they can give them for free or chage people for them or
do nothing if they'd rather have people buying new devices with the new os on

But why are the Pocket PC version out and not the Smartphone version?

Give the poor guy Rudiger a brake, he has answered 2 of your questions, he like most of us dont have a cristal ball nor do we work for microsoft.
Want to know more about the smartphone version then read the ms web page. Ask bill. Go to a smartphone site.
You cant buy 2005 on a cd, in shop or even on a device at this moment in time.

Sorry for asking... tought the meaning of forum like this is to get answers... but maybe not here...

But it is, just sometimes you get answers that may be you dont want to read, thats also the idea of forums.

Agree! Still can't find any sites where I can find information about how to buy or download WM2005... surfed all Mobile 2005 related MS sites, without finding any information... just have to wait for a new device with preinstaled WM2005... thanks...

Microsoft only releases WM2005 to mobile phone makers (such as HTC for our devices). It is then up to each company to choose to release an update for their old phones with it or to make new phones with it.
Microsoft has nothing to do with the end user.

Bad news: there will be no ROM upgrades to Windows Mobile 5.0 for existing Windows Mobile cell phones
May 13, 2005 [General]
Distributors and operators want you to buy new phones with Windows Mobile 5.0 instead of upgrading your old phones to Windows Mobile 5.0!
Interestingly ROM images with Windows Mobile 5.0 exist for HTC Typhoon (Orange SPV C500, Audiovox SMT 5600, etc), for HTC Blue Angel and other models, but they will not be available for customers, because operators and distributors want you to buy new phones with Windows Mobile 5.0 instead of upgrading new ones...
Smartphone Thoughts news website got an information from Orange UK about Windows Mobile 5.0:
Orange is looking forward to launching the new Windows Mobile platform across a range of attractive devices in 2005. The key benefits to customers and to Orange will be an enhanced phone experience, increased customisation possibilities, as well as improved overall performance.
Florian Seiche, Director of Devices, Orange Group
We have also got information from other sources that there will be no upgrades to Windows Mobile 5.0 for existing Windows Mobile phones. The only ROM upgrades to Windows Mobile 5.0 from Windows Mobile 2003 will be available for some Pocket PC PDAs (not phones) from HP, Dell, and some other vendors.
Conclusion: don't buy any Windows Mobile phone if it is not powered by Windows Mobile 5.0 or if a vendor/distributor of given phone is not giving official promise that upgrade to Windows Mobile 5.0 will be available.
Please note: first official devices with Windows Mobile 5.0 will be available in August 2005. It's also important to notice that Windows Mobile 5.0 works also in low resolution of 176x220 and technically speaking it can work on any Windows Mobile phone
Who cares? We'll get our un-offical updates here in xda-developers anyway as usual

How did we got WM2005 or WM2003SE (more than one!) for Himalaya? How did we got WM2003SE for Wallaby? In many-many ways which will be not known probably for us
i ampraying they get the blueangel rom!!
no need to worry man...
There's no reason to worry about the rom..
BECAUSE THIS IS XDA-DEVELOPERS MAN....
we are here the best with the best!
No worries dude! everything is upgradable here in xda-developers.com 8)
I never expect to have WM2003SE on my Wallaby device, but the great guys here has made it! Many thanks to all people here in this forum
It's sad that this is the case. My blue angel rocks, and it's less than 6 months old. Thanks to xda-devs we'll get WM5 These guys rock
let not forget the xda2i... hehehe..would love to have this baby running on wm2k5
BLUEANGEL WM 2005
This forum can do anything!! This is the exclusive kickass XDA think-tank on a www.. level !!! I am confident that before it is all over with, our fellow forum members will have the WM 2005 runnig on the BlueAngel and someone might even take it a step further and probably make up a streamline (simulated) version to run on and XDA I!!
It all starts with an idea and everyone digs in and can have it solved in hours or a day at the latest. Totally freaking AMAZING!! 8) Thanks to all who have helped us all!!!

Correct is all about money, BUT
as for me and my GSM SP and many other GSM SP's arround the world have their subscribers locked into a 24 month contract?
What do we do then?
I chatted to the support for iMate on www.clubimate.com last Friday and they also said there was no upgrade for the iMate 2020 PPC. In fact I was told that "testing" was not complete. Yet Dell was very quick off the mark and annonce imediately (the day after, MS annoncement) that ALL Axim X50 Handheld Family. (http://www1.us.dell.com/content/top...ce/en/2004/2005_05_10_rr_000?c=us&l=en&s=corp)
Now that is service!

Upgrading XDAI to WM2005?

I have an PPC with WPPC 2003 1st Edition. Can I upgrade to the WM2005? Can I use the instructions explained in the Himalaya section?
Thx @all Chris
Himalay ROMs are different from the Wallaby ROMs. So until now there is no WM2005 ROM available for the Wallaby --> No chance to upgrade....
HTH
Stefan
Thx that was fast
You said NOW there is no version?!?
What about Windows Mobile 5. It's out since last Friday. Is this different to the WM2005 Version? Cause it's mentioned that this new version is a common version for mostly all mobile devices?!?
Chris
Yeah, Windows Mobile 2005 is the same as Windows Mobile 5.0 (Magneto was it's codename).
And even though WM5.0 is "out" since Friday, that does not mean that it will be available to everyone and every device. Up until now, only Dell and HP have publicly announced it's plans to support SOME of it's high end devices, but not all of them.
And they say it's going to be a common OS for all Microsoft mobiles because WM5.0 apps will be compatible cross platform between Smartphones and Pocket PCs.

Official WM6 upgrade for TyTn is confirmed

The official HTC forum in Norway has confirmed that HTC will release an WM6 update for TyTn.
http://smartmobil.no/Article639.phtml
Sorry if this information is outdated
Its also on Qtek's swedish site that theres 5 HTC phones definitly getitng the official upgrade.. http://www.qtek.se/sweden/nyheter/senaste_nytt.aspx
I'm sure it has already been covered someplace else on the forums already mind.
Yea, i think it have been posted earlier today/this week. Says late summer, so im thinking july, august
well, this is great news.
let's hope the official update will have all problems fixed etc.
Cingular announced this a few weeks ago. Actually they confirmed WM6 for the 8525, blackjack AND treo 750. No release dates though, but engadget reported that the Blackjack update is probably going to be released the earliest.
official WM6
Hi
Its true that TyTn gone have an official WM6. But I’m not sure that they can delivery it in June or July because TyTn Europe couldn’t jet delivery a new Swedish MW5 Rom witch been known since months on xda-developers forum it was suppose to delivery in January 07. so I satisfying so long with current WM6 such as Black, LVSW etc.
regards
Yes, and the question is: witch one will be better? Or better suiteable...
I believe that the heroes here (we all are) investigated so much in this stuff that I will make this statement: HTC learn from XDA or you lose!!! Probably they've read all our treads and learnd from it.
Question: What do you think concerning this matter?
I think Cingular/HTC waits for the developers here to solve all the problems then they just copy and release what was done here Saves them time and money developing their own stuff. lol

hahaha, lol, man, its cool.
They will read your post and theirs faces will be red.
Its true though... even if an offical release becomes available for my Vario II, I'm not totally sure that I would upgrade giving tha I'm so happy with my LVSW WM6 install
i have the same sentiments... the roms here are almost "made to order" with features that majority of us agree on. I really can't imagine upgrading to an official "operator" or "manufacturer" rom unless there's a big boo boo in the one's i've installed from here (which there have been none I might add).

For sure, this is the development field of WM6.

I presonally prefer official ROMs over these user-made. WM6 roms I've tried do have more or less annoying bugs and unusefull software (xcept maybe for vanillas).
Original roms are (or at least should be) guaranteed to work on phones they have been made for.

Yes, advanced users here provide very much, but not that many actually developes the OS itself. They just add tweaks
and some freeware programs in it.
Oh and believe me, there are more gurus out there as well. This is just a forum with few experts and I doubt they
do this for a living, more like a hobby.
For free? How many times you have paid for a rom that operator releases?
And WM6 for free? I'd say that's piracy. You do pay for at least to upgrade from Windows XP to Vista?
When you buy a new computer that comes with an OS, you can't assume that you are entitled for a free upgrade
to OS when ever one is released.
I find the best thing this forum has to offer is free problem solving when it comes to bricking your device when
you either don't have a clue what you are doing or then something goes wrong while flashing your phone.
Hats off for the expert for that.

I wonder if this is the reason the upgrade that was announced for Q1 still hasn't been released?

It is quite different thing for several reasons:
1. You can't go and buy an OS for a PocketPC or smartphone. Moreover, there is no and can't be a market for OSes for such devices: any build is device dependent. Show me that shop, and I'll buy Symbian or Linux for my TyTN!
2. When you buy a motherboard, you expect free BIOS update, especially if the original is buggy. For embedded devices (STB, modem, router, MP3 player etc) you do expect free firmware update, especially if the original one is buggy. No matter that the firmware is based on a Linux or even no OS. Windows Mobile is just a part of the firmware for our devices.
And, because Windows Mobile is always buggy, we do expect free updates!
Yes, you get free updates for BIOS as you do get for your phone. They are called ROM updates, which include fixes for radio, bootloader, OS fixes and stuff, but NOT a new OS.
As I see it, when a new OS has been released, it will be sold as a part of a new phone (OEM). As you can't purchase OEM versions you are stuck with the one you currently own, but you still do get free updates.
I would find it quite strange if you would be supported with brand new OS for no additional cost, since I believe the operators/manufacturers sure has to pay license fees for
new OS's.

Don't be so restricted, look wider!
Manufacturers get money from selling their devices. If they won't update the OS on just released models (and TyTN is far from EOL), they loose sales. Then they can give the same ROM to us, old owners, for no cost for them.
Then, they just announced new models on almost the same hardware. They have to use the new OS on them, so they have to make the new ROM for them. But if they won't update our ROMs with the new OS, they'd have to continue supporting two different lines of ROMs, instead of one with small very specific changes. It's additional cost. Or, drop support for recent devices, means loose their face and then sales of new devices.
Believe me, it's not free, and not for no cost from us. We paid enough to let them support us until EOL, and they earn enough from such upgrades.
Just like owners of other devices paid for all the firmware updates, we paid for our updates. The early we purchased the more we paid, BTW. An update with the new OS for recent devices for HTC is cheaper than no updates or updates with old OS. Even if the update would be less stable/useful than WM5 AKU3.5!

If Microsoft provides the upgrade to the OEM for free (which it looks like they are doing for WM6) and the OEM provides the upgrade to current owners for free (which it looks like they will do when they eventually do it), then it is not piracy.
Keep in mind that Microsoft really makes its money on its core products (currently Vista, Office 2007 and Exchange 2007). They REALLY want users (especially enterprise users) to upgrade to those new products. If you have a Windows Mobile device, you need WM6 on those devices to take full advantage of the new features in the core products, so why wouldn't they give it away? It will pay for itself twice or three times over. Besides, as other users have pointed out, WM6 is really just a bug fix maintenance release for WM5.0!

You can? Amazing! Let's start a thread about it and discuss it
Not only that, the thread title was very badly chosen.
Dopod WILL offer a WM6 upgrade. Saying Dopod offers a WM6 upgrade [now] is a lie.
Even I was planning to get that upgrade so that I can breath, I know its expensive, but people told me its worth, so why not give it a shot. And fuzz, I was told this upgrade was only going to be available from next week! How come you got it now?
I don't. I just saw a press release.
DOPOD Aus has been talking about releasing ROMs forever on their site and nothing has ever happened. I hope this is a change.

Owner of iPAQ 210/211/212/214 Read this!

Have you guy read this:
Last week, Microsoft formally unveiled Windows Mobile 6.1, the latest version of its operating system for handhelds and smartphones.
Naturally, the owners of current devices are anxious to know if and when updates for their units will be released.
Unfortunately, there's bad news for users of HP's latest iPAQs. Responding to a question from Brighthand, Mike Hockey, Hewlett-Packard's Worldwide Public Relations Manager, said:
HP will not be offering an operating system upgrade for currently shipping HP iPAQ devices beyond what ships on the device today -- Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.
This decision comes after having evaluated the potential for delays in firmware and software updates, device recertification, and carry-over costs to our customers that are often associated with an operating system upgrade.
HP is committed to continuing its long-standing relationship with Microsoft and will deliver HP iPAQs with Windows Mobile 6.1 at a future date.

Just bought a HP 214, so I'd be very interested in the 6.1 upgrade.
It does not supprise me that HP have made this decision, they let us all down with the upgrade for the 4700 from 2003 to wm5, that in mind it will be better to have someone cook the rom than wait/trust HP to release a workable upgrade.
This just shows how committed HP is to their customers--they're not! I'm in the market for a new pocket pc and I was thinking about getting the HP 211, but I think I will just go with the dell axim X51v now.
Soo much for their so called "3 years Supports" ...
