Pixel 3XL Ram Management problem

Okay so the phone is great let me start there and virtually no lag or studder when using most apps again all. But I did notice today while using Google Maps, Pokemon Go, and Facebook messenger that switching between the apps there was a major system hang and a slow down. Also after having a bunch of apps open it ****s Pokemon go down completely from running in the background and even though it shows it's still open in the recents, when I go back to it, it starts up again like I just opened the app and reloaded it. Has anyone else noticed this issue? And if so is this something that could be fixed with an update or is this just bad ram management for 4gb of ram on this phone?

Pokemon Go is a terribly optimized heavy resource game, it reloads after using almost anything else on my Pixel 2

One thing I've noticed for some apps, if you have it battery optimized, it will do that. YouTube Music for me would. I would be in the car, stop and go in a gas station or whatever, come back out and it would startup like it just opened for the first time. Turned off optimization and hasn't done it since. But yeah, watch out for some games. Some are resource hogs.

This was happening to me on my Pixel 2 XL, and I thought it was a RAM management issue. Turns out it was battery optimization. I turned off battery optimization and PoGo stopped closing in the background. I did this for a couple of other programs I didn't want aggressively closed. It seems to have done the trick.

Not exactly. Select the apps and make sure they are not optimized. Everything else on your phone should stay optimized.

Actually I restarted my phone after I did the changes and now it seems to be working? I'll test it through out the day but if that's all it was you're a life saver my friend. Thank you

It didn't work, see like when it gets 4 or 5 apps down the list it restarts itself when u try and reopen it .. thank you though

I think there's a RAM leak. I think there was one on the 2 XL too.

I saw someone in the comments of an article say there is way to fix this with root. Is there a magisk mod that helps with this?

More and more reports are coming up regarding this issue - playing music in the background and then using the camera, etc.
I have experienced it when using Smart AudioBook Player playing in the background and have google maps navigation running. All of a sudden, the audio bookstops playing. I have to switch to the audiobook and restart playback. It then happens again and when I restart the audiobook a second time, google maps' navigation gets closed out. I think google needs to issue a software update for their RAM management.

Ram isn't a problem for me but I will be implementing simple lmk in FrankenKernel ,for those with issues it's probably just aggressive .. Should not be a huge deal going forward..

There is defiantly some ram issues, i have been using a few music apps that keep getting killed when im doing other things. im sitting at over 3gb of usage almost 700mb more usage then my pixel 2 xl with the same apps i use. Im sure it will be fixed just not sure it will be done with in my return window and since i got it from vzw i wont have the luxury of flashing better optimized kernels . sucks having issues like this but i think all my pixel nexus phones had some odd issues for the first few weeks/months

I noticed the RAM problem while using Amazon Music and Zombie's Run! The music would stop during the first song while the Run app still runs. It really sucks to have to stop my workout to make the music start. My 2XL never had this issue.
I'm on the fence. For this amount of money, I should be happy with it, not annoyed.

Frustrated with my P20

I have had my P20 for about three month now... and it's OK but the Huawei "enhancements" and some other things are very frustrating.
1) Almost none of my "background" stuff works... Meaning things like Google Photo backup, SMS Backup & Restore scheduled backups, and other scheduled services don't run until I open the apps. Not much good to have automatic backups if they aren't automatic. Also, Google Rewards does not notify me of new surveys. Things that happen in the background seems to happen for a short time after you open the app, then they just stop.
2) Multitasking is a joke... On my old Moto G5+, I could have Facebook, Candy Crush Saga (don't judge, I have invested too much time to quit), Pandora, MeWe, Gmail, Messenger, Nine Mail, and a host of other apps running with no issues switching back and forth without them "reloading". On my P20 with the same RAM and supposedly a faster processor, if I am in Candy Crush Saga and switch to Facebook, then switch back, Candy Crush reloads when I was in the middle of level... Much less trying to have Pandora or a few other things going simultaneously. And yet I typically have 1.8-2.1GB of RAM available, it's impossible to actually multitask without apps restarting constantly.
3) Delayed or no notifications... From most apps... Gmail, Facebook, XDA, Nine (a real problem, this is my work email), Calendar, etc. Almost every app that isn't open gives delayed notification, sometimes a minute or two, sometimes hours, sometimes not until it is opened. Other times notifications show up, but no sound is given at all.
These things all seem to be related to how aggressive the memory and application management is to maintain the battery... Sort of making up for the hardware's inefficiencies through software. But it works, battery life is quite good.
4) Inability to change "default" apps like the Gallery... I hate the Gallery, but I love Google Photos as the "gallery" app. You can change it in the settings to the default, but few applications "honor" that setting. And for some reason the Gallery doesn't see all the photos I download with Photos. Weird... And even when you set other non-Huawei apps as defaults, it only works sometimes. This goes back to EMUI's software framework I think. Never had this issue on Motos, Nokias, Pixels, etc.
5) More of an annoyance than anything else, but what the heck is with the lock screen wallpaper? I can't get rid of the Huawei papers, they show up no matter what I do or how many of my own I add, the stock ones keep showing up. I have gone into the lock screen settings and disabled ALL of the embedded ones, and only my folder of about 50 or so images, and I keep getting the stock Huawei ones show up in the rotation.
Then there is the lockups... For example, open Google and search for something, switch to images, and maybe turn on GIF filter or something... This thing will grind to a halt in nothing flat, granted my old Moto would lag a bit, but it was 100 times better than this thing. I get the same thing in some apps but not others without consistency. Or if my UC-One app for work rings, sometimes it works, other times it locks up tight and needs a hard reboot to recover... No other phone out of the 80 or so at work does this. It's just so inconsistent.
And my last gripe is the data lag... At random times, regardless if on mobile data or WiFi, it will just lag out for 10 seconds to 2 minutes, usually once or twice a day, but not consistently... Everything looks fine, good signal strength regardless of source and other devices work fine, but no data will be moving and videos freeze and buffer, Facebook pictures don't load, etc. Granted, this really started after the May 2019 update.
It sounds like I hate this phone, but I do like a lot of things about it... The battery life if good, the charge times are good, the camera is excellent, the sound quality is acceptable, nice screen, not too big or overweight. But man, that new Pixel 3a XL at $20/month is sure looking pretty good.
Am I all alone here, or do others have the same issues?

Oh dude. 99 % of things you mentioned can be handled in the phone settings like telling phone not to shut apps in the background. You should Google before you write things down.
Ragarding your last point with lag: try doing a soft reset and install you carrier settings once again.
I've got the phone for half a year now and after searching and changing some settings it works better than anything else I've seen on a phone I paid 350 EUR for.

I take no offense from your comment, but I am not a noob... I have been working with Android since Eclair and smartphones in general much longer, including working on several ROM development teams and am an RC here. I did Google and DID turn off Huawei's "App Launch" management that I assume you are talking about trying to stop the optimizations from EMUI, and a few other things, but this is AFTER that. Although some of them seemed to help a little, it doesn't fix the problems.
Not only have I soft reset, I have done complete factory resets and all of my carrier settings are current... The lag also occurs on WiFi.
My post was kind of a rant, not necessarily looking for a solution unless there was one, and I was looking to see if I was the only one with these issues. Nor am I saying this isn't a good phone... Many of the things I have talked about would not bother many people.

In my case, I'm happy with the phone. Obviously I had some other problem, especially in some of the points you mentioned in the post. As the backup of Google Photos that did not work, but when I opened the app. However, selecting that all applications start manually has worked correctly for me.
I have disabled several applications using ADB. I know it does not erase them definitively, but hey, it's something. I also hate or just do not like the amount of applications that the phone has installed, I see them as unnecessary. I've always tried to use Google apps: calendar, dialer, calculator, clock, contacts, file manager, keep notes, etc. (that means I also disabled the original dialer).
But there is something that haunts me since I upgraded to EMUI 9. And it is a bug in recent applications that has a blue shadow that only appears when using a launcher. As I read, the solution is to disable the EMUI launcher, I did it once, but I prefer the appearance of recent applications of EMUI 9 than the previous ones. (Although I believe that this is poorly implemented).

Disable Huawei power genie app. I think it will solve all your problems with background apps.
You can find instructions online.
Your battery will take a small hit.

The biggest issue is the wifi, very capricious
I have no problem watching a 1080p stream on twitch... but loading the newsfeed on FB, twitter, is sometimes impossible. I have to switch to 4g to load the newsfeed and it's very annoying ... Sometimes i can browse the internet for 5minutes, then nothing would load, for no reason ...
The battery management settings is also very aggressive, and notifications often displayed 1h, 2h late. Occasionally i get a "1 message from " " ... 1 day" on messenger app
One thing i really miss is viper4audio ... I did everything, i can't get this thing to work.
Appart from that, it's a good medium range phone.

I don't know what phone you have.I think you are on a wrong thread.This is for Huawei P20 which is a premium phone not a midrange phone.

It's not a 800€+ phone, and there's the p20 pro. I bought it for 379€ in europe, just a month after it's release. So for me it's more a medium range phone ^^ the top medium range

Well,for me there are the specifications that make a phone premium/midrange or entry-level.The P20 has specifications that matches a premium 2018 phone.If you were so lucky to find a new P20 in spring 2018 for less than 400 euros,good for you.

You don't need to disable the Power Genius app, it can actually do some good... disabling it is functionally equivalent to going to Settings -> Battery -> App Launch and turning off "Manage All Automatically" and that will leave you like most other Android device with the kernel managing everything.
I disabled this at first after @costindaemon mentioned it, but Gmail app notifications, especially for non-Gmail accounts, got wonky... So I re-enabled Power Genius but turned it off as I stated above, then went through the apps and turned some on that I wanted "suppressed"... Gmail is an enigma here though, if it's management is turned off I had issues with notifications and accounts, and in App Launch it had a warning saying something like that, so I turned it on for that app and it's been good since. I have since just monitored the usage with GSAM's App Sucker and anything high on the battery usage list that I didn't want I turned on the Manage Automatically for that app and it no longer misbehaved. Think I have found the happy medium here.
I still have some issues with the phone, most just annoyances now... not to the level of frustration I was at before though. Still looking at that Pixel 3a XL though... it's in the cart, financing approved, but I just can't seem to pull the trigger yet. lol

You're right. I made a mistake in thinking that disabling power genie worked, when in reality it was just rebooting my phone that temporarily fixed the problem.
I did a bit of googling into a "ram leak" on the P20 and it was actually because I was using a 3rd party launcher (Nova). The solution was to disable the stock Huawei launcher, and since I did that 2 days ago my free ram has not gone below 1000mb. I've installed another launcher in case Nova mucks up.
But it looks like you've moved onto the 3a now, hopefully it's better than the awful software experience that comes with this phone xD. I definitely won't be buying Huawei in the future.

Yeah, I got my Pixel on Monday... Already think it's 10 times better, except the camera. That 2x "optical zoom" was damn nice although the Pixel's pictures seem a better quality even though they take longer to process. For the camera, I'm still giving the edge to the Pixel but I haven't played with it much yet.
All my issues are gone now and battery life is noticeably better. The Huawei will be going up on the local classified ad sites soon, hopefully the market for them isn't completely tanked.

Any issues you have don't exist for me. Likely because i always first disable/uninstall most major google apps immediately.
Any problems i've noticed don't appear to me as device specific but rather OS related. To me, this thing performs quite well with impressively low battery drain by comparison.

Android 11 update - serious battery drain issue

2 weeks after Android 11 update, my pixel 2 xl started to feel hot and the battery was discharging quickly. On Google help, many people were in my case, and many of them mentioned about unstalling Tunein. Which I did, then my phone stopped to be warm but this didn't stop the drain issue. What I have noticed is that if I don't touch my phone, the battery acts as normal, slow discharge, but when I use it, meaning when the screen is on, the battery just discharges at a crazy speed. It was not like that just before the Android 11 update. Anyone got this problem and found the reason / a fix ?

Yes, strange. Mine gets a serious battery drain from 100% to 50% in a short time, even when I don't use it. Then below 50% it is very stable as long as I don't use it. Never experienced this before.

I have the same problem. before that, I was calmly getting 4-6h SOT After updating to Android 11 as lucky as I get 4h SOT. Mostly, however, I have 2.5-3.5 hours. The standby time seems ok, Only during use the battery disappears very fast. ? In my free time I will try the factory reset.

Hello gentlemen, i got this problem with october update in particular.
So, digging in a google forum i found a user who recommended to install an updated version of Android System Webview (maybe you should download it from apkpure or apkmirror) , Carrier Services and.... uninstall Tune-in (yep... the radio app)
I don't know which one did the trick... but it just did..

Sure, i installed webview 86.04240 and (there was a mistake in my prev post) Device Health Services 1.17.0.331553323.
Anyway, i got 2 webview updates since then... so, just install the last one... if you got auto-updates enable you should have your problem fixed by now (i guess that happened to the op).

thanks for the info, unfortunately I checked and I have exactly the same version of the application installed. the problem with the battery remains. the strangest thing is that I have no problem with idle drain, but when used with the screen on, the phone uses almost twice as much energy as before ?

I have the same problem, idle drain is ok, but whenever I use the phone, the battery drains very fast.

I had the same problem and it was a new (at least to me) Google program called "Digital Wellbeing". I had to turn it off, which wasn't a straight forward proposition. I even "uninstalled" which just uninstalled the updates and they came back.
I don't recall exactly all the steps I took, but I now have my trusty Pixel 2 XL back to it's previous battery usage. Which is excellent for a three year old device.
Anyway, turn it off, take away all it's permissions, and do everything you can to shut it down. I was almost ready to root my device just to really get rid of it.

I disabled digital wellbeing, stopped the permissions, and uninstalled the update on the play store, but it didn't fix the battery drain...

A few days have passed and I can see a significant improvement. Honestly, I don't know what actually helped. some app update or maybe something I did, but there's a significant improvement.
In general, I would like to remind that from the update to android 11 my battery was tragic but only when using it, there was no problem with standby.
I was barely able to get 4 SOT hours. Now I can safely exceed 6 hours.
The only modifications I made were:
- leave beta program of digital welbing and its complete shutdown app
- disabled wifi scanning
- disabled Location service for emergency calls ELS
Since then, battery consumption with the screen on has dropped from 25-30%/ h to 12-16%/h. The phone is like new again. In addition, everything works very quickly and smoothly. ??

Question about 2021 s20 exynos heat

Hello everyone, im going to choose a phone for my cousin and i was looking to s20+ exynos. Its a great phone but when i bought it in 2020 summer, it was heating up a lot even when doing normal tasks like using chrome or watching youtube. For comparison, when using zoom s20+ got up to 42-43 Degree battery and was really hot, same conditions s10+ was something like 31battery. After 2 days i returned the phone. Now i suspect this was due to software problems and wanna know if phone still heats up like this during normal use.

My Note 10+ Snapdragon was a hot running battery hog when I first used it. Today it's a fast, stable, cool running platform. Same firmware but I optimized it over time.

I suppose its okay for it to not be perfect but it shouldnt be that bad either. I wouldnt return it otherwise. That was definitely not a case where it would fix itself with user optimizations and a week of 'phone getting used to your patterns' bs. You clearly had a different problem if you achieved it without updates.

Doesn't matter what the problem is most times because with Android there's always a work around even on stock Androids.
Each device and user are different... we're not all the same lame Apple
It's time consuming... until you work it out.
If you're waiting an update solution you're going to wait... and maybe still not get what you want.
That's why Gookill can jam Q and especially 11 up someone else's auxiliary port.
No real improvements and lots of useless cpu cycle robbing big sister bs. 12 will likely be worse... so I'm not throwing my money or time at it. I have that luxury.

No real improvements and lots of useless cpu cycle robbing big sister bs. 12 will likely be worse... so I'm not throwing my money or time at it. I have that luxury.

A whole lot.
First step was to disable all power management.
Then go after each offender on a case by case basis. Rogue 3rd party apps either get firewall blocked or deleted especially if they're are startup apps that don't need that privilege.
I use Package Disabler and Karma Firewall a lot.
I clear the system cache and use as needed the old Device Care powered by 360° (firewall blocked) to clear system caches and logs.
Disable all cloud junk, and other Google trashware.
Simply disabling Google play Services and Playstore when not needed gives you another 1-2%@ hr of battery life. They are hogs that tend to run needlessly.
Disable all feedback... it's data mining at your expense.
Sometimes I turn off battery background usage to certain apks like Android Services.
It all adds up... play with it.
Each device, OS and user are different, so what works well for me might puke on you.
Don't make too many changes at once and be aware of possible dependencies for the apps you alter. It's a learning curve... and sort of fun.

Im pretty sure your note 10 would be completely fine without any of those. If you updated a few times. But if you have to stay at initial firmware for some specific reason then fair enough. (Btw, I also used to disable google play and google services but at the time my phone had 834MB ram so it was really important, i dont think saving %1 battery is worth it at all)
When i had my S20+, phone didnt heat at all when idling so some bloatware/feedback/google services/rogue app etc. wasnt the issue. I learned from someone else it was fixed after november update. Anyways have a good day

That's a minimum. When Gookill is misbehaving it's battery usage far exceeds that and extends into when the screen is off.
My battery usage when sleeping with AOD on touch demand is 2-3% for 6 hours.
That 1 or 2% is also after much of the Gookill junkware was disabled.
Google and Samsung apps are the prime suspects... as usual.
My stock 10+ is heavily reconfigured, I have no quick fixes for you because none of mine were quick
As for updates, they ain't got nothing for me. Last thing I want is Q loading on this device.
It would gut Karma Firewall's functionality and destroy trusted overlay apks... for what?
I've already archieved all my favorite apks so I'm not longer dependent on Playstore. Playstore will eventually alter or delete them.

Question Why is my phone running hot?

Anyone know how I might go about diagnosing why my phone has been running much warmer than usual? Just browsing Facebook (posts, not video) for about 5 minutes with brightness around 25% the temp was up to 41 degrees. It happened earlier today when I was just using Chrome, and it happens most days now. The issue began when I updated to 11.2.8.8 (the very next day), and the phone overheated several times the first few days, evidenced by the system warning about temperature, then recovering several minutes later. I haven't seen the system warning since then, but it's frequently above 40 degrees just doing everyday tasks. Oddly, I haven't noticed it overheating when playing games.
I usually run Omega kernel, which has always run cooler than stock during both normal use and heavy gaming, but this issue has occurred with both stock and Omega, so it's not kernel-related. The only magisk modules I have installed are debloater (for YouTube only), font manager, and systemless hosts, so that's not it either.
Maybe some app going haywire (how to find it? Nothing in battery usage) or some system behavior that changed in 11.2.8.8? Anyone else have this issue or find what's causing it?

That's just how this phone is. It was worse when the phone released before all of the updates. They've been slowly trying to fix it with each update. The 888 is a hot *****.

I remember having that complaint when I first got it, especially when gaming, but it's been fine for me since like April, until this last update. And with Omega several degrees cooler. So there has to be something new causing it....

What version of Omega are you on? What build of OOS? AA, BA, DA? Are there any unusual rogue apps that you've noticed running more than usual?

Latest version of Omega (8/7) since yesterday, but was having the same issue on the previous build (7/30). I'm on OOS 11.2.8.8 BA.
I haven't noticed any apps using more battery than expected, but I guess that might be part of my question... If there are any, what's the best way to find them? I'm not seeing any useful info in BBS or anything in GSam I wouldn't expect, except overall battery drain is a bit higher when it's been running hot. I do have a lot of apps installed and should probably clean up what I don't use, so I guess that's a place to start.

Find which apks are using the battery.
Google system apks are prime suspects.
Trash apps like FB, WhatsApp, LinkedIn... none of that junkware runs on my device, ever.
Examine all startup apks closely, take out the trash.
Power management can end up causing excessive battery usage, try turning it off.
Track down each battery hog and deal with it on a case by case basis rather than the flip a switch shotgun approach.
I use Karma Firewall's logging feature to help track down offenders.
Dependencies... sometimes the source of the high usage is hidden. What apks and services are running? What apks are using what services and why? What's apks are getting cached first when you clear them all? Any memory leaks?

Good ideas. I just installed Karma Firewall and will see if it turns up anything.
How do you manage startup apps and running services? I used to use Servicely, but with Android 11 I find that even when I disable apps at startup they still start on their own, and it seems to use more battery than it saves. I've since disabled all apps of that kind and just let Android manage things itself. The only thing I do is go to individual apps and turn on battery optimization and disable background data if not needed, and I keep apps I don't use often in Icebox, including Facebook, which is the only social media type app I have. (Uninstalling FB isn't an option unfortunately.)

Karma's logging feature doesn't work in 10 and above I believe, I run Pie. See what you got though. It will still block apk internet access though and uses almost no battery.
The battery optimization option can cause erratic behavior and I never use it. Close apps when done with them. Brave browser for instance will run in the background until closed.
Developer options>running services memory leaks show up as an apk who's memory usage just keeps increasing with time. It can get quit large. These are rare and poorly coded programs. More common on Windows.
Keep an eye though for memory hungry apps as they may be using excessive power but not always. Small memory users can be worse. Dependencies, sometimes a apk or service keeps making repeated requests because of a disabled apk or service.
Killing Goggle play Services and Playstore when not needed will help battery life.
Google backup Transport, Framework and Firebase are always disabled on my device.
All carrier, manufacturer, and Google feedback are disabled.
I have a Samsung device and I use its Device Care app to clear the cached apks. Then watch as they repopulate. You'll need an app that does this. In running services you can disable a suspect apk and see how long it takes to come back. I find that Device Care is more effective though and that ability has let me track down some misbehaving system apks saving me a reload.
FB is weaponized and a proven liability. Known data miner. Purveyor of disinformation and dissent. It has ruined countless lives and careers. It deliberately makes you have load the app to be able to send messages. If this last year hasn't taught you what you need to know...
I used it for one month 15 years ago and knew what it was back then. It's far worse today.

Thanks for the info, it's interesting. However, if you're running Pie & not even using a OnePlus device, none of this is going to be applicable to my issue which is specific to OOS 11.2.8.8 on this particular device, only present since last month's update.
Re: FB - I'm required to use it for my job (well, second job), and I need it on my mobile device in order to do that job, so it's not going away. Freezing it when not in use is the best I can do.

You cross platform OS version and manufacturer to find solutions. I have a lot of posts here but few asking for help because I do the above or just keeps at it until I work it out as it's my issue.

You've painted yourself into a corner.

@terlynn4 I use BatteryGuru because it uses root to find rogue apps that are draining battery unnecessarily. Give it a go and see if that helps pinpoint the problem at all.
