Stock Gapps in stock firmware. Doesn't happen all the time but when it does it means factory reset and setup phone again which is lost time and effort.

You are lucky cause it does not even backup anything for me neither on stock or custom at all. Happens in both of my different phones. Been like this for couple of months. Swift backup is gucci

Same here. All google backup does for me is reinstall all my apps. I use sms backup and restore for text messages and call logs. I miss the days when I could restore everything with titanium backup, so I didn't have to log back into 37,000 different apps every time I flash a rom.

Can swift actually restore app data like titanium used to? Is swift basically the new titanium backup? I've been on hiatus for the last few years. Last time I was active here super partitions and a/b slots weren't a thing and titanium still worked.

I'd say that, yes, Swift Backup is the new Titanium Backup. I've had absolutely no problem backing up and restoring all of my apps, as well as SMS messages, call logs, and wi-fi networks, on the latest and greatest Android releases. Titanium's biggest issue vis-a-vis app backups is that it doesn't support the new "split APK" format; every time it tries to restore one, it hangs. I'm pretty sure that some of its esoteric features still work, but given that it hasn't been updated since November 2019, and that its major use (app backup/restore) is crippled, I'd classify it as dead in the water.

Hey,
Today at my first time, I Installed ROM and Kernal and Radio and all this essential crap.
Before I started, I went to HTC Sync software on my PC, and backed up all my files, Calender, People and thou..
But I guess I didn't notice that the SMS messages are not included on the backup list.
So now with my new ROM, when I synced back the files from the HTC Sync, it only bringed me back the Calender, People.. but not the messages,
Witch is pretty important for me, I had alot of important SMSs which I wish to restore.
When I installed the ROM I went through all the steps on the guide including the Wipe thing that I understood it is something backup?
Also I used the google's sync all the time,
Is there any option to get my SMSs from there?
Thank you very much,
Yarden.
As far as I know HTC Sync and Google Sync no backup messages.
You should have previously backup you messages with (for example) Titanium Backup.
If you haven`t Nanodroid Backup previous rom - you can`t restore you messages.
I don't love you..
oh crap. stupid ROM..
and what about the applications?
I see that they also gone,
Can they be restored?
No, apps can`t restore.
Before flash everything, I advise do backup all with TB, nanodroid backup and then flash all that you need.
These actions will help you keep all the data and, if anything, to restore everything as it was.
Good luck.

If you downloaded them through the marketplace they'll automatically download and install when you sign in with your google account on your phone.
sromer, titanium backup does not wipe messages. To backup messages use sms backup+ which is free. If you have a nandroid backup, restore that, backup messages and do your rom thing again.

SMS Backup & Restore would also be a good choice
MyBackup has successfully restored sms, mms etc. for me 10+ times now. definitely worth using. great program!
If you want constant backups I use gosms and only use it yo schedule backups every day at 6, then all is good, but I'm going to start backing up on every text I get

This has to have been asked already, however I am unable to think of sufficient search terms to turn it ip.
What I am looking to do is back up all my personalizations(sp?), ring tones, email configurations, text messages, all apps, etc and restore them back after a rom change or reinstall of the same rom.
Thanks
If Adroid had taken a backup of your apps and Settings then it would restore them. All you need to do is to log on with the same Google account as before. If you had not enabled Backup and Restore (Settings > Backup & Restore) then it will not restore anything.
I've used Titanium Backup for this - for a more in-depth way to backup and restore. It's just important to read and understand what you can and can't do with it or you can cripple your ROM and have to wipe and start over.

I have never had much luck with the google restore. The only thing I have ever been able to get it to restore with any reliability was my contacts. Having my apps restored is below 50/50 and I always have that setting on. Even when it restored my apps it never restored my Text Messages although I do have an app for that. It is more the configurations that get annoying.

I'll have to take another look at Titanium Backup. I played with it a couple years back but never delved into it too much. Mainly used it to freeze apps on my Sensation when only the temp root was available.
Thanks guys.
I've used Ti Backup for years but it can be a little cumbersome. Helium by Koush is a little easier to use.
My last wipe was owned by Nandroid Manager
I've never restored wifi, bluetooth and SMS so reliably before. As long as you do a full Nandroid backup before you wipe, NM can hunt through your backup for whatever data you need.
So here's a question for you guys.....................
I have the HTC One M8 and am rooted and S-OFF, as well as ViperOne M8 and Titanium Backup.
Whenever I get an update from Team Venom for ViperOne, I notice it says just as it's finishing the reboot (post-install) that it's upgrading my apps. So does that mean that the backups that I have (for my apps) which are stored in Titanium Backup are no longer current? I don't think the upgrade process affects the backed up data that was done pre-install, so it seems like that data would be outdated at this point?
Please answer if you think you know.
Thank You,

No it doesn't, usually when developers release a new ROM update they also update all of their stock apps on their ROM to the newest versions. Because of that, when you reboot it tends to say that because it is updating the apps for it and or caching them. (this is to my knowledge of how it works, still though your backups are fine)
Hopefully you are only talking user installed apps? Is not a good idea to be restoring system apps.
correct, YOUR apps, that you backed up to TB are current as of the day you backed them up.
once you restore them, via TB, then of course, open play store, and let it check and see if there are any updates to YOUR previously backed up apps.

It is updating any apps that come with the ROM such as the HTC TV app or other HTC apps, TB is not included because it is not one of the pre-loaded apps that the developer included with the ROM. Also as stated above, the TB backups are not touched by this, they stay the same as they were when you made them soo you have to update the backups yourself if you wanted to.
Shadowz,
Ok, that's what I thought. I just needed to hear you say it in a different way to be sure. lol
So anytime there's a new update, I'm gonna need to re-backup all the apps with TB then. Seems like TB is only good if you mess something up and wanna restore the apps' data. When you're just doing an incremental update, or especially a full ROM install, then it's useless. I may just uninstall it.
Thanks Shadowz!

THIS is the proper way to use TB...
I've used TB for years. After flashing clean, I just restore my user apps, data also for some and aside from a few system settings.... I'm right back how I was.
I use Nova, so restoring it's settings puts my home screens right back how they were too.
Not sure why people would want to mess with Nandroid data restores when this whole process above takes hardly any time and never brings issues. ?

Hi KJ,
Yeah I noticed that too as I also have Nova.
So you're saying you never do any nandroid backups? Interesting. Where do you save the TB backup files? I don't like saving them on internal storage, so I just transfer them to a flash drive or OneDrive (formerly SkyDrive).
Thanks,

I occasionally do a nandroid. Only for a full restore. And usually just before wiping and Flashing something. I don't always, cause I can flash roms or stock manually just as easy.
And I just keep my TB backups on the device.

KJ,
I see. Ok. I'm still gonna do them, but more for emergencies than anything.
I did that but then one time recently something happened and my internal storage got wiped clean. I save a copy on my external SD card, but then I thought "what if my phone got lost?", and decided to just store it on flash or cloud. Just wish TB would let you store it on THEIR own server so you don't have to worry about doing it manually or automatically elsewhere. The options they have like Google Drive don't offer as much space. I have Google Drive but don't want to give up the space. And I think DropBox is only 1 GIG? There is that Titanium variant that stores them automatically for only $2.99, but that got bad reviews.
Thanks,
RockStar2005
I've used TB for a few years now (paid version). I use it mainly to backup my user data just in case. Right now my M8 is stock (just got it and I wait until my warrenty is up before rooting etc) so I'm not really using it now. When I do root I'll be able to take my user data from a few games I'm playing on my rooted Transformer Prime and put the data on my phone. That's really the only thing I use TB for execpt for freezing bloatware so I can unfreeze, use Voodo Root Keeper (if it works on the device) and get OTA's. User data is always my biggest priority. I can reinstall any apps from the play store. Yes, this can take some time but doing it this way, when I f-up I can pick and choose what apps I put back on and leave off apps that I installed in the past but never use anymore. To each is own I guess. One good example was about a year ago Google updated the standard music app. I hated it. It screwed up all my album art and I hated the new interface. I used TB to restore the older version and it was like it never happened.
I'm trying to get my head around titanium backup and the correct way to restore data when switching ROMs. Some people say you have to restore your device ID. I've always had issues with notifications after restoring app data. I'm interested what is the correct procedure and What I'm doing wrong?

I got around to doing a full flash yesterday (even full flashed both slots) with the .c factory image. Also got the canary MM and canary Magisk updates early this morning. TiBa is working fine for me. Just a shot in the dark, but are you running EdXposed or any other modules/modifications (Substratum themes) that could be causing issues? The only modules I have loaded are MagiskHide Props Config, Active Edge System Mod and systemless hosts. My BusyBox is Stericson and not the module.

No other modules or mods installed, not even a custom kernel at that point., but I found that part of my problem is that TiBu corrupted my messages backup. It took the better part of an hour to back up, but the backup file is only about 350 KB...I'm crestfallen, lol. Never had an issue like that with TiBu, been using it for years. Didn't even think to check that the backup was saved properly.
Lol, I woke up this morning and flashed back to Android Pie so I could restore my messages in TiBU, and then back them up some other way and then roll forward to 10...only to discover this. Talk about salt in the wound.

I heard that. Anyone who's been around this scene a while knows at one time it was great and a must for all users.
You can send logs in to TBU bug tracker web page. I'm sure they have a lot of people sending logs and writing them and it's probably hard to keep up but I sent some logs not long ago.. I never saw anything updated or anything because of my logs but...? I sent the maximum amount you can at a time and then filled out another report and sent more. Who knows...
I've been using Migrate NG from here on xda to backup my user apps and data from user apps. Works great! Check it out! Also from what I've read Swift app is supposedly the new good backup app that works but if you don't have pro you can only backup one app at a time and same on restore. Not sure why they don't do like a three day trial to let us try if out in pro version before we buy it...But from what I've seen they do not. Definitely check out Migrate app, anyone who hasn't. Works well on my OnePlus6t and the xda thread is active so if for some reason it doesn't work on your device there is help to get it to work.

I loved pie!! There are some awesome substratum themes too that lost support after pie... I hear you man. Many roms imo seemed to be better on android 9 than now. I used to like when android evolved and up graded to next version and now I don't because of exactly what you're saying here. You look at a nexus device back on say 7.12 and then now... Sure battery is better optimized nowadays but in my opinion those were the best times for android. More roms, themes, sound mods that were made universal (arise audio).. Android 7-9 was killer! I just know how much of a security risk it is using things that are that outdated... Especially nowadays! There is probably a way to patch an older version depending on how old it is.. I mean I see roms being made still for nexus 5x that are android 10 based now.. Good luck!
