Hello folks,
In the market for a new phone from OnePlus 6. Lack of 5G is making me miss loads of calls, even though the phone is perfectly fine and I really like it, its time to move on.
My budget is around $300. I am considering pre-owned Pixel 6 pro. I know Pixel 6 series had issues when they came out. I don't know if they are fixed now and worth taking a look.
I would like to know what you do not like about Pixel 6 pro. Other than clean android, I would like best camera I can buy at $300 range.
I took a look at OnePlus 9 pro. Its good too, but leaning towards Pixel for camera.
Thanks in advance.
Do you have a set date that you have to upgrade before? If not, then I would wait around for Google's next event in the beginning of May.
At that point in time, they'll presumably announce their upcoming phone(s) and may release their new Pixel 7A device (which is the more affordable Pixel variant that still has a good number of attractive features - like the photo processing to have it take great pictures)!
I forget what the starting price is for the Pixel A variant phones - but I think they generally start around $400-$450 USD.
Anyway, I would steer clear of the Pixel 6 series. The most applicable-to-your-scenario issue that the 6 series faced was poor phone service! Those model Pixel phones were using an older, known-to-be-problematic modem. Essentially, they would quickly chew through your phone's battery and would consistently cause phone service drops =/. But, I haven't had the same issue with my Pixel 7 Pro (since it has a new modem).
Of course, I'm not sure which features from the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will be left out of the Pixel 7A. But, we'll just have to wait until that Google event occurs in May to find out!
Radio/modem is the only issues. It's legit terrible and deserves all the hate it gets. The rest of the phone is great.

I admit I see the connection shuffling between 5G and LTE a bit more often than I like. Fortunately, as a Straight Talk customer I'm on Verizon's network. While Verizon's bootloader locking policy is absolute s*** and they deserve all the hate they get for that, their network is better than AT&T or T-Mobile. I tend to have signal where my roommates with their OnePlus and Samsung phones have none.
TL;DR: A good network can compensate for a bad radio/modem.
My issue is the phone has great service, but I get an exclamation mark in the data icon and it refuses to connect.

My issue would be 5G eats an absurd amount of battery.
Wifi connection sucks...!!!
Battery life is bad
Signal strength is really poor
THANK YOU, folks. You guys saved me from future headache. With these issues, I can not use Pixel 6 series. I am looking to buy ASAP. Maybe I will take a look at Galaxy S20 series.
I would look at the OnePlus 9 pro. Great community support, and 1+1 phones are great. You can flash a pixel ROM, and get majority of the pixel exclusive features.

(Pixel XL + Project FI) vs. (Note 7 + prepaid USC)
What is your hypothetical choice?
I'm a low data user, usually not more than 500MB per month...
So, what would YOU choose?
1) Note 7, banned, not any other phone even compares in terms of features, and $35 per month on USC
vs.
2) Pixel XL, you know the score, but $25-30 per month on Project FI.
I already have the two phones, I can cancel/port number, either one. The question is which do I keep?
Considerations:
a) In terms of features, prestige, looks, coolness factor, not even a contest - Note 7 blows ANY current phone out of the water. Add to that Samsung Pay, which works everywhere unlike Android Pay or Apple Pay or any other paypay, and you have a winner. But the phone is dead - no updates, no new features, possible disable of IMEI in the future... The future is very bleak, but today is glorious!
b) Pixel Xl is fast- FAST, Project FI is cheap for a low data user, and there are new updates a coming! But that's about it - the phone is kinda ugly, Project Fi is buggy, and it's just, well, uninspiring. It's a solid phone, but it's ...just that.
I'll have to make a choice in the near future - logic dictates to keep awesome Note 7 until Galaxy S8 arrives, then return for a full refund. But what if they ban Note 7 imei in the US like they did in New Zealand and Australia? Or stop full refunds?
Opinions?
P.S. BTW, before any fire hazard discussion starts - Note 7 safety is not a concern here. Zero concern.
@nabbed,
For starters, I'll state that I have a Pixel XL running on Fi.
My comments:
Note 7: Prestige? Maybe in your mind. But since the battery debacle, not in a lot of others.
Project Fi: Buggy? Really? I've been on Fi since it's launch. It has been rock solid for me.
In any event, my personal criteria is to never let my device drive my carrier choice. For me, the 1st criteria is to choose the carrier that best fits my needs and offers the best value. Then the device follows...

Hey, I also have a Pixel XL, running on FI! But it's buggy as hell! I spent over a literal hour on my other phone with an agent to sort it out. And it wouldn't make calls even though data was working, and then it was working again, making calls. And then it stopped calling again. And then it started again. There was no reason for it though, seemed like a bug in software.
And just so it doesn't seem like I'm blowing smoke up your huhu, here's a screenshot:

I understand that it is buggy, now, for you. I have no doubt. But this isn't the norm. Plenty of Project Fi users with the Pixel XL.
I don't know if the problem is your device. And I'm sorry that I can't offer any tangible tips for troubleshooting. But I can assure you that something isn't right. And if you can get it sorted out, the combination of XL plus Fi works just fine.

Do you really believe that the combination of XL plus FI works just fine, that is, for everyone?
Or is it buggy Google software?
I guess I answered my own question here.
Aside from the risk of fire, it's now a federal crime you bring a Note 7 onboard an aircraft. Even considering the features, that would be enough to strike the Note 7 as an option.
My experience with Pixel XL on Project Fi has been flawless. For low data users, Fi offers excellent value, especially with the coverage overseas.
I have Fi since day one and it's been buggy since day one as well. I probably have over 50 support calls lol. If not for recent T-Mobile price hike and Fi somewhat buggy but fast international roaming, I would be on T-Mobile instead
Fi and the Pixel XL have been amazing for me so far in the few weeks I've had it. I've had a few call issues, but I quickly fixed by forcing to Sprint or vice versa.
You posted this in the pixel sub-forum, responses should be obvious.
Also, Samsung wouldn't take billions in losses and non-reversible brand damage in recalling a phone that isn't a threat to YOU.
Stupid question honestly.
And I've had FI for almost a year now, Pixel XL a couple weeks after it was released. Never had any problems with Fi.

You really think it was a stupid question? Note 7 vs. Pixel XL?
Hey folks... first I am not trying to start anything negative....I really am wanting the P2XL but with the perceived issues I read about and the price tag I am having difficulty rationalizing the extra 400 dollars vs the Essential. I know many of the issues are blown a bit out of proportion. To me the best way of getting the facts is to go to the users who actually use the device...
I would be coming from the Nexus 6p.
Thanks for any information.
Mate, if you want a new Device and consider the Pixel 2 XL I just want to tell you: Get it and test it. If it fits your expectations stick with it, if not, change. Easy.
I also ordered mine but will get it in round about 5-10 days and despite all the negative press I am very excited. If it doesnt fit my expectations I will get my refund and done.
Btw: the hardest competitor to the Pixel 2 XL is the upcoming OnePlus 5t in my opinion and absolutely not the essential
Agreed, buy it and try it for yourself. The return process is pretty simple with Google if you change your mind. All you have to loose is a bit of time.
Buy it or don't buy, who cares, I got mine...
if you need to have to ask someone else for justification, you probably shouldn't buy it.
I think you should buy an iPhone. Those people have been convinced that their product is superior and they should buy it. So I think you should as well! Jk jk jk?

What issues have you read about? Have you experienced these yourself? Every device has issues when released, this didn't stop me from buying. The price tag is there because Google DOESN'T want to sell hardware. They give you the price tag to deter you away, and it works for most.
I'm a Google/AOSP enthusiast - I was on every nexus device and Pixel. I will always be. Issues or not. Google has not once ever let me down like OnePlus has. I will stand behind Google and what ever it sells.
The company backing a product is also a huge selling point for me. Not to mention the phone rocks. Just an FYI. What phone has an orange power button!?
The essential phone would be the obvious buy if it wasn't for the camera. The extra $400 (closer to $500) is the premium I'm willing to pay to have the best camera ever on a phone. I have 2 young kids, so the ability to be able to pull out my phone and get an awesome picture every time is something I'm willing to pay for.
If you don't take a lot of pictures, there's plenty of better options out there for you. I'd consider the essential, the op 5t, the razer phone, heck even my old v20 is still rock solid and retains a removable battery and ir blaster.

I have the P 2 XL and love the phone. Does everything right. The barely showing time of day and message notification is GREAT.
Also, the what music is playing now feature is helpful. If you don't want to buy and maybe return it, go to a Verizon store and handle
one for a few. You'll be able to tell alot from handling it and seeing if you like the screen. Def worth a look! Get the US Unlocked version
from Google or Swappa, not the Verizon due to locked down bootloader. p.s. Tried and returned the Essential. Doesn't compare.....
Your choice and hands-on is best test! My badboy Pixel XL 2 is rocking...
When the phone came out all reviews were overwhelmingly positive based on the reviewer's perception of the particular phone they were sent. My perception is the same. I love it! Very fast, very efficient, great camera and now the screen is great too! Based on most initial reviews and my own experience I'm guessing the phones with significant problems are very few compared to those that don't. Also the overall rating on this forum is 4.8.
I think most of the issues with the phone affect each of us (or don't affect us at all) differently based on how we use it. You have nothing to lose by trying it.
My XL is going back today. Apparently I have one of the 'bad' pOLED displays.
I could not care less about the saturation or whatever. And it's not just the blue shift on mine. The red and yellows that appear unless you are looking dead center ruin the experience.
This is not acceptable for $850+ device. The IPS LCD on my 2 yr old LG V10 is vastly superior to the Pixel 2 XL.
The quality control issue is real, and the denials by Google are sad. Here are two side by side from the other thread:

I'm more than happy with mine. Although I'm still waiting for the 5t to come out but i think I'ma stick with XL. This thing is so smooth. Battery life and camera are the best two parts of the phone. The blue shift is not bothering me at all and although I'm not used to the natural colors but i think it could be fixed with custom kernels. Microphone is terrible tho.

Have you checked on wondamobile? Its on promotion at the moment
If you need a phone asap the regular s20 Snapdragon can be found for a really good price come cyber monday.. I've had zero issues with it .
I personally prefer the smaller size and the price is great for a really snappy phone. I'm getting around 6.5hrs screen on time as well.
No Root but that hasn't bothered me one bit
Currently updated s20 with exynos is pretty much the same as snapdragon and on daily basis you wont notice any difference, in fact my s20+ exynos version never gave me any reason to complain and at least you have warranty which may not be as easy and straight forward with imported snapdragon
So there are no know problems with the S20/plus

I wouldn't necessarily label these problems but there are issues which you might consider before purchasing the S20 Plus.
The rear cameras aren't flush with the back panel, they protrude. It doesn't look like much in promotional photos but it clashes with the symmetry of the device and won't lay flat. Also at 6.37" x 2.90" it's not what most consider a "pocket phone"' it's a big device which is the trend these days.
There's no 3.5 mm jack, the wired earpiece connection is routed through the charging port which requires an adapter. If you're fine with Bluetooth for audio no big deal but as an audio buff a wired connection is superior.
Only Asian Snapdragon variants offer unlocked bootloaders, if you won't root the device that shouldn't matter. The UI is refined to the point you may not want to bother with root. Plus there are numerous models even within the S20 Plus. If full Call Feature functionality is a top priority then aquire your service provider's device, which in your case would mean a Exynos SoC.
It's an expensive smartphone, there are other options available for hundreds of dollars less that may be suitable for your needs. Overall it's a great device, maybe the best smartphone on the market but not necessarily the best value.
If I was considering a purchase at this time I'd hold off until the S21 is released in January or February. If you do and still prefer the, S20 Plus it will available at an even lower price than today.
Hello, who knows what this acronym means?

I'm almost decided. I'm buying the G30, and the battery is one of the main reasons.
I'm tempted to buy the Amazon-exclusive 6GB version. Everything else on board is identical; just 6GB instead of 4GB RAM.
However, would the 6GB affect battery performance vs the 4GB version, whose battery benchmarks are pretty much where I need them? Does anyone know?
Depends somewhat on the memory type.
My Note 10+ has a older generation of ram memory than the N20U. With 12 gb of ram all I notice is snappy performance with good battery life.
The impact of 2 gb of extra ram on battery life should be very small. 6 gb is the minimum I would have so it's a no brainer to go for the 6 gb variant.
Thanks! That makes sense and come to think of it my previous phone was 6GB too so I shouldn't downgrade.
Some interesting answers here if anyone else has the same question:

How RAM usage effects battery drain?
I'm really confused about Android memory management. I just read here that killing apps by swiping from recent list or using task killers won't save your battery but drain more because this cause ...

Right now I have two browser open. You'll want the 6 gb. I reccomend staying away from Android 11, it's a hog that gives little in return.

Hmmm... I don't know. For the specs I'm looking for, there aren't many more options out there.
Yes, the G30 is no flagship but it's got exactly what I want: great battery, it's not too large or bulky, dual sim, it doesn't have MIUI nor much bloatware, has decent camera.
I don't think I have many more options with somewhat decent specs, esp. at 6GB.
There's the G10 but it's got bad Wi-Fi, and all the 'power' models are worse in other specs, I think.

I never use wi-fi, it's a security risk. No need for it if you have an unlimited plan except as a hot spot.
By enabling only wifi updates then setting Playstore etc to only do automatic updates by wi-fi you can stop those apps auto-updates from raising hell. I use the wi-fi options like that
Get best rated phone with best specs in the class you're looking at. The more of that model sold the better the support and parts availability.
Consider used models in excellent condition as well; example, a Note 10+ 512 gb can be had for $650. Just check the display for burn in with Screen Test before accepting. B&H Photo gives you a 100% return policy on anything you buy from them.
Batteries are fairly easy to replace even on the 10+ so don't sweat that.
Nah, that approach doesn't work for me at all. It's not even about class, as not all the phones in each class have the exact same config.
Firstly, almost all flagship phones are huge anyway, and I don't like huge. Then they almost never have better batteries than this. A good phone is no use if you can't keep it on.
Then, many excellent phones use MIUI, which I loathe. And so on. I'm not above used and refurbished models, but only when they fit my requirements.
I don't have an unlimited data plan cause there's no need for that. I use 2-3GB total and that's how much I need.
Different strokes. Thanks for your help though
Is a Good phone. 90hz, Awesome! Big battery. It depends on the user how long it last...
If you don't use wifi, bluetooth, nfc and apps that eats power will last for a long time.
Very good value for the money.
New, not from the store, around 100$, in my region/country. 6/128 gb
I use Note 10+ 5g, the most beautifull phone. Good? Not so much. That 90hz (G30)over 60hz (Note 10), on the G30 matters! Huge price! I pay around 650 $ last year, in the summer. G30 moves better. Less bloatware.
Bluetooth seems to use very little battery on my 10+ in standby mode or in actual use. In 12 hours including 4 hours active usage it was at 1%.
Samsung's done a good job with their bt Buds+ it would seem.
I get 8 hours of Screen-on time & still 13% is left.

1) I run google free. The presence of the "assistant" was the part of the google spyware system that finally convinced me that it was time to get rid of it all. You should be very cautious about allowing anyone to spy on you. Read some George Orwell -- what they are ACTUALLY doing now was at that time seen as an unbelievable overstep.
2) I stopped wearing watches when I got my first cell phone. Why do I need to carry two things that do the same thing? The phone is a lot more convenient since it has a much bigger screen.
The whole idea of a "smart watch" is a gimmick. Don't fall into it.
Google might get into the smart watch game to compete with Apple and Samsung. I mean, it is logical. It is a good move to get into that market. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple starts making electric cars.
Oh good...another half baked device.
As long as I can sideload the Google Assistant to my Galaxy Watch 4 Classic I'd be happy

That would be very frightening. They are not good at things that are complicated. If it happens, I'll be trying to come up with some means of detecting them (i.e. 360 degree visual) and alerting me when one is getting close so I can keep well clear of it.

I wish people could figure out that electric cars are not as "environmentally responsible" as they're made out to be. The reason Musk makes them comes down exclusively to the fact that you can't run an internal combustion engine on Mars. Tesla is a hell of an R&D lab for that.
