Is AOSP without GApps privacy-friendly? If yes, then you could just get one of those AOSP ROMs, which offer a version without GApps.
But AOSP might not be privacy-friendly, I'm not sure. ^^ It's developed by Google after all.

Yeah I know, but is Vanilla Android still privacy-preserving, or does it send Telemetry too?
Cuz that would exclude most ROMs out of the equation for privacy.

Vanilla Android (the base) does not vary from device to device, the included device-specific drivers and other minor adjustments differ.

AOSP doesn’t come with Google’s suite of software applications which u might consider one of the biggest privacy issues on android devices, but unlike Apple u can install vanilla build which does not contain any data mining tools, as far as i know there is no telemetry in AOSP, i personally prefer caf which is more optimized repo for snapdragon devices, at the end of the day if u want total privacy stick with vanilla build (crdroid, BlissRom, SyberiaOS...) plus F-droid store or one of it's forks like Aurora droid app you will find plenty of useful open source apps provided by people like u and me and will not collect any data from ur device, if u still want to use apps from playstore you can flash MicroG: MinMicroG-NoGoolag-2.11.1-20220202153503.zip ( fyi u still have to update aurora apps from their website for them to work properly since this repo hasn't been updated since February ) auroraoss.com it will allow u to download apps from play Store anonymously but it does not guarantee ur privacy, if u are using accounts linked to you personally those apps will send private data no matter what and your device will be identified.

What ROM are you rocking at the moment? Any ROMs you generally recommend? Complete forks from CAF, or AOSP ROMs with CAF optimisations? Thinking of ArrowOS or LineageOS + GApps.. Don't need Pixel-features, just GApps ^^

Have already heard about this rom. Its privacy oriented?

really nice topic the privacy stuff really becomes more and more important in the same manner like using Google apps. I tried many roms lineage / aicp / crdroid and now I am good with corvus. but the best you can do is install a pihole with anti telemetry lists on it and tunnel your devices with wireguard or OpenVPN over your own network than you even can run stock rom

What is Guardian Rom?
Guardian ROM is a custom android ROM multiple devices. The ROM is completely Open Source and based off of the CM10.1. While this build is stable because it's based on CM10.1 it is a preview so please expect some bugs, & missing features (i.e updater).
What Features does Guardian Rom have?
Kernel is hardened with SecDroid Tweaks.
ROM is patched with and includes OpenPdoird for
permissions management.
Guardian Project apps are pre-installed – These include Orbot (Tor), Gibberbot (Secure IM),
and more.
CSSimple and OStel (https://guardianproject.info/wiki/Ostel) are included as replacements to the
built calling apps. providing encrypted communications.
If encryption is enabled and password is entered wrong 10 times the phone wipes user data.

Coming Soon:
Including support for Deniable Encryption (similar to Truecrypt hidden volumes).
Including GRSecurity for exploit mitigation and more secure phone.
Including SQLCipher to ensure all data is encrypted whenever possible
Including a customer “app store” for our repos.
Different lockscreen pin and Pre-Boot authentication password.
Auto-Prompt for encryption setup on first boot.

How to use:
Simply flash the flashable zip through your favorite custom recovery. (TWRP is recommended as it supports encrypted devices). Once flashed you should enable Full Disk Encryption by doing the following (may very depending on device):
Code:
Settings --> Security ---> Password [enter a strong 8-16 char password]
Than
Code:
Settings --> Security ---> Encryption --> Enable Encryption
Downloads:Downloads are over here.
Please verify the downloaded file with the attached GPG signature to ensure is is a legit copy.
GAPPS
Google Apps are NOT included and before you flash them you may want to read this article.
UPDATES:
Since this is a preview I have not had a chance to remove or modify the CM Updater. Please do NOT use it as you will be flashing a stock CM10.1 build and not Guardian Rom. This will be fixed shortly.
always been curious about this rom, so I may give this a whirl! thanks for the hard work!
Any reviews?

Since these NSA Android stories are rolling out there might be more traffic coming this way.
SAMSUNG S4
Will this be available for an unbranded international S2, GT-I9100 ?
I am currently trying out CM10.1 and installed most of the included apps manually, but there is a problem with encryption and updating the nightlies and CWM, so I'd like to try out Guardian Rom.

Those stories are FUD. Don't believe them. The only code the NSA put in android is SeLinux which hardens android. It's opensource and has been in linux for years.

Not for now. Nexus device get primary support as they have an AOSP Source tree.
A very worthwhile effort. I wish I would own one of the supported devices to see how it goes.
I hope that more developers will start to put liberty and privacy into Android.
Keep up the good work.

More is coming soon. Guardian Rom is going to be on more device soon, We have a working once-click installer for all supported devices at this point, easy setup for Full Disk Encryption and Deniable Encryption, Policy Management and more. We are about to launch for a round of funding so stay tuned. Things are going to get exciting.

To be honest, I hope these guys are okay. Privacy rights are important and these guys are also helping protect whistle blowers. Given that, I hope they haven't been whisked away to a black site. Yeah, that's a paranoid statement but not outside the realm of possibility.

Looked into this project earlier. You can't find a dl link for jflte because it's only currently got beta release for the nexus line. The guy has a page on Kickstarter trying to raise 35 thousand dollars to support development. He promises to make a stable build and support more devices only if his 35k support fund is together by april 30th. Don't think it's gonna happen bc he's only at 1500.

[Oneplus 3T][20161214] Unofficial CyanogenMod 14.1 by PeterCxy

* do some research if you have any concerns about features included in this ROM
* before flashing it! YOU are choosing to make these modifications, and if
* you point the finger at me for messing up your device, I will laugh at you.
*
*/
This is my custom ROM built only for Oneplus 3T. DO NOT try to flash it on Oneplus 3.
This ROM is NOT compatible with sultan's custom kernel (actually not compatible with any kernel that is not built for CM14.1)
I built this for my own daily use, and shared because I did not see another public release of CM14.1 yet. This is based on the work of morckx at GitHub.
Sorry for you all, but the final exam for me is coming I might not have time to update this ROM regularly, so let's just wait for CM's official support or you may turn to the unified unofficial nightlies lol.. (actually I could have updated this last weekend but I went for dating, haha.)
ROM features
- Vanilla CyanogenMod 14.1 (last synced: 2016-12-14 GMT+8)
- Ported to Oneplus 3T (Thanks to morckx for merging 3T changes into the CM kernel)
- No OTA supported for this ROM, if you receive any, please ignore it and DO NOT install. (Though you will not be able to install that at all)
About the embedded "Brevent" App:
This is a refactored version of the Xposed module "Prevent Running" (http://repo.xposed.info/module/me.piebridge.forcestopgb) that do not depend on the Xposed framework but depend on framework patches, which I need for daily use because I have to stop some Chinese apps from keeping the whole device awake all the time. Sorry if adding this brought you any inconvenience, and you can turn the 'Auto Prevent' off in Brevent -> User Guide -> Advanced Settings, thus it will not affect apps any more. Read the instructions at https://github.com/liudongmiao/Brevent to learn more about it.
Installation
Flash the zips with a custom recovery, for example, TWRP.
Known bugs
- All BUGs that the CM14.1 ROM for Oneplus 3 has
- Front camera goes only up to 4MP instead of 16MP
- New photos may become green sometimes (use a third-party camera app instead if you experience this issue)
- (Confirmation needed) LTE may not work as expected for some carriers. However I did not encounter any problem for my China Telecom LTE(+) network for now.

No worries, you can just dirty flash this over Sultan's rom, did the same for the OPO, OPX and now for the 3T :
- Backup in TWRP (Just in case)
- Do not wipe anything!
- Flash CM14.1
- Flash Gapps 7.1 ARM64
- Wipe cache/dalvik
- Reboot
Clean flash is always better ofcourse but for now everything is working perfectly for me.

They don't mention device specific bugs, only "many minor bugs" so I guess it will be in CM framework. Each nightly will bring new fixes but.new bugs too till they bring out a stable branch. I would advise staying on a nightly that seems stable for your use and only update when the monthly security patch is released by google and merged by CM.

I like this idea...a barebones rom sound awesome....the one I currently use seems to be the lightest footprint but COSP sounds promising.
I vote for it to have the fixes needed for F droid functionality but will need a separate package to flash....therefore the people who want Google won't have to uninstall any apps which will keep the rom light.

So this rom is like strictly stock that we can still receive updates from Google, correct?
If so would it possible to add clock/date options ? TIA
Is there an option to install Yalp Store as a system app?
Now THIS right here is a ROM i can get behind if they keep it AOSP-Barebones ROM with option maybe sideload zip you can install for more options. I want to go Google free when MicroG gets better. Keep up the Good work will be monitoring this Rom, new daily driver.

Barebones with sidoadable zips would be real cool. I don't know to what extent things can be done this way, but even things like privacy guard so people have a choice. That'd be so cool. A flashable zip that contains privacy guard. Really though don't think that's a possibility.
Just posting this cause it's something that's always been on my mind. It's way above my pay grade and maybe just a pipe dream anyway...
I've often thought it would be cool to have a minimal Rom installable with either a PC based script or aroma.
It would let you pick the features then install. Lol

No. Custom ROMs are just that. Custom.
Google monthly updates only work for stock. You need to wait until the dev merges updates from Google into their code.
hey, this is the best ROM I've seen around here since I want to get rid of Google
I've only been testing for a day, but here are some questions and bug reports
- I can't use the Phone app to call anyone (using Virgin Mobile network)
- Netflix won't play UHD content
If I flash another kernel, would it be ok? I'm thinking of trying the Elemental X
otherwise, only good things, keep it up
There's gonna be an update this week! Some new exciting changes included!
Glad this ROM has signature spoofing. Now if only I could get Snapchat to work

De-Googled // Un-Googled // Google-Free - which ROMs?

Hi guys,
as I am particularly interested in ROMs that are without Google, I was wondering if there is a list about this. I use Lineage OS 17.1 on my Redmi Note 8 right now.
What google-free ROMs do you guys use?
There are many roms that come without gapps called vanilla roms. Some of them are..
* AOSP Extended
* Bliss Rom
* CrDroid
* MSM Xtended
* Pixel Experience
* Resurrection Remix etc...
I'm just interested to know why you are interested in ROMs that are without Google?
You use your own gapps or use without gapps?
I think life is better with Google! Because everything you want is synced and backed up and can be use everywhere you go.

Technically GAPPS are fantastic. But since you give up all your privacy - so no thanks. The hidden price is too high. I am going all FOSS (F-Droid etc.) and it is working nicely.
I installed Havoc OS / Bliss ROM / Paranoid Android (on another device) and they are full with GAPPS (!) so I was wondering - didn't know the 'Vanilla' Thing.

Thanks for the views on each ROM. I noticed the last post on Superior talks about not being able to connect on VPN - did you ever try this?
Agree with your comments on Gapps. Presume Superior is ok to run with microG?

In your opinion how final is Aosp for everyday use as I have just read the developer saying he is giving it up?
I am not overly bothered about security patches.

i did not try vpn on Superior ,i was on TG group of Superior but nobody mention it
anyway,if lot of people talk about it the dek will fix it
the 2 things that bothered me in Superior were :
-xposed module gravitybox" ram bar (always on top of QS even if u set it to bottom
-the X on signal bar when you disable data can't be hidden
about gapps on superior i saw dev recomand oppengapps on TG, i don't know what's best for it cuz i don't use gapps
AEX is the best rom hands down,me 2 i don't care about patches and it's still on my phone for a reason ...

Hey, RR maintainer here, I was reading your message about that RR doesn't have Legacy App support, lemme say that has that feature, about Call Log bug, I don't know what you mean with it.

i tested those 2
RROS-Q-8.5.7-20200812-ginkgo-Official Resurrection Remix call log full scr.lnk
RROS-Q-8.5.6-20200811-ginkgo-Unofficial (Resurrection Remix) call log full scr.lnk
and did not find any option
still not tested last one (RROS-Q-8.5.9-20200826-ginkgo-Official.zip),but as soon as i have free time i'll ...
call log bug is commun in custom roms and only few don't have it
it's when you call a number, you will not see it in recent calls until you relaunch the dialer
it's very bad for me,i use calls everyday everytime, and quiting dialer and launch it everytime is very annoying and waste of time ...

i just tested RROS 20200826 and i have some questions
-legacy app scaling is enabled by default for all apps ,no need to add them manually , so why did you include the option ? and is that related to build prop or systemUI ?
-smart pixel : will that make any differance ? (RN8 is IPS LCD, lot of people say it does not make any differance , and other even says it does more harm than good)
-the included recorder app record audio with 6kbps ,is there any way to make it 128 or 192kbps ?

For legacy apps you need to enable it and add manually your prefered apps, and its related to system framework.
About smart pixels, if im honest never used such option, wasn't needed for me.
Now about recorder app: Dont use LineageOS one, use the recorder that you can find in quick settings (you need to add it first).

Man ,i'm telling you , i already tried 3 and they work perfectly without any user config (which is great)
system framework ? so you cant mod a file or something to make it work on a rom that don't support it ?
(you have to build from the source ?)

Lineage recorder use X264 for encoding video (runs fast on every machine)
the built in "QS" recorder use X265 for encoding which need the codec to be installed and hardware acceleration to run smootly ...
But this is not a big deal , the real deal is the call log bug
did anyone find any solution ???
THE deGoogled Android distro is \e\, but your device is not (yet) officially supported.
BTW the community is boiling...

I was just thinking how much I'd love to see this for the 3a.
Couple of things though;
1) Where's the device tree source and vendor blobs?
2) Its unfortunate that you baked in the google crap, one of the great things about custom builds is to get rid of that.

1. Soon I'll push source
2. I do have microg build for sargo as it is my main device, but not for bonito, so I did not post here on xda, if you want it join the support link group in the thread. Regarding google crap, for some users flashing gapps externally had less fluid experience so I did it.
I hope soon will be very soon, since I'm only interested in building myself anyway.
Have you spoken to @kdrag0n about adding in your source and making this "official"?

Device source
Vendor Source
Note:- I have few extra proprietary stuff added in vendor for Google Fi and stuff to work for users out the box which lineage does not have added in their vendor, so if you really want less vendor blob use lineage vendor. It will work without any issue, I think kdrag0n also uses them.
Regarding official builds, I don't have the same infrastructure as him(reason why I only posted gapps build here, it takes lot of time to maintain both gapps and non gapps build) nor the time to maintain it officially. as said in thread, this is my side project which I thought to share it with community. If things work well in future and I feel like doing it official, I may ask kdrag0n. Also idk if he is accepting new device as he is maintaining all the official devices alone by himself.

Here's a current source.
I don't know if it's trusted, or who the maintainer of this unofficial build is though. Just found it via telegram.

Nice one. It's really handy to be able to revive old, unsupported devices like the Pixel 3a, which is a perfectly usable phone and can be picked up for next to nothing.
Some of us don't care about de-googling our phones and really just want to extend their lifespan with security updates, so having gapps baked in to ProtonOASP is really nice. Especially when we're just trying to help out our non-technical friends get a bit more life out of their old phones. A consistent, familiar user experience is all they really want.
I was wondering though: Does your build (or any build of ProtonOASP) come with verified-boot signatures so that the device's bootloader can be locked down after the ROM is installed, or is CalyxOS the only option for this?
Unfortunately, Calyx are very puritanical when it comes to de-googling, and microG is just a terrible substitute for interacting with Google services. I tried it on the Pixel 3a, and it doesn't even sync the contact list from your Google account. My non-technical friend was not impressed.
GrapheneOS still has builds up for 3a, however new builds were terminated as of February. While it doesn't ship with gCrap preinstalled, installation is trivial as they've built a compatibility layer to make it work correctly (and much MUCH more securely) as user-installed software, which you can install from the program "Apps".
