Data recovery - Samsung Galaxy A50 Questions & Answers

Hi are there any services or is it possible to recover data from fully dead phone (water damage) ?
regards

Pull the rear cover and disconnect the battery.
If not damaged by corrosion it may be salvageable.
Otherwise a profe$$ional service might be able to.
How long since it happened?
What kind of water?

it fell in the pool. i already took it to 2 repair shops 1 being the official samsung center. official said that corrosion damaged everything. Other shop were trying 1 week until they said cant retrieve anything. So now im thinking to look for specific data retrieval companies

The chipset with the internal flash memory will need to be removed and remounted in a test jig or same model phone. Even that may not work.
You have a SD card slot in that phone. Why weren't you using it as a data drive? All critical data should have been on there. Although that should've been backed up as well, the card likely would have survived.

sd card was not used. i had "mega" as a backup but i dont know what happened when i checked mega only had empty folders

Use multiple hdds for backup. Copy/paste/verify for size /readability files and folders to backup.
Maybe nothing can be done now, but in the future you can prevent this from happening again.
More lessons from the U of Hard Knocks... been there, done that. I lost a whole database that was 30 yo and not replaceable

30y of data ouch..well mega was added after screen was broken and replaced so data would not be lost. and yet again managed to mess it up

Yeah backup is a pain. I do it manually even the sync. You want multiple copies that are time staggered. I have lots of old hdds that store extra copies just in case. I may lose some data but never all.
An OTG flashstick can be used as a quick "dirty" backup but make sure most of the data is backed up to at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC.
One near lightning strike can wipe a device...
You can use a cloud service but even then I still use hdds on top of that.

thanks for the tips

How to fix my GNex now.!!

Quite some time ago, the microUSB port on my Galaxy Nexus started having problems after it got wet in the rain. I have been using it as such ever since, the device does charge, but doe not go into USB mode no matter what I do. Also, during the last flash, my entire storage, including sdcard + system + data got wiped. Is there any way to get it back working without getting it serviced. Also, I have repaired my laptops before, no matter how serious the problem may be. How much more difficult, could it be to install the new replacement part myself.
PS: I live in Delhi, India, so there is no servicing available for the device as of now. Samsung refuses to be able to provide any support at all.
Take the phone apart ( pull battery, etc) and put it in a bag of rice. For a couple of days. Just to remove the moisture. Also dont use it. It can harm the phone as it became wet.

i have already done that... my problem is my phone is entirely wiped, no ROM on it plus no ROM on the internal sdcard as well....
Also, the microUSB port does not work any longer... so the think I was asking is ... is there a way to transfer a ROM zip without having to repair the USB port which in my case i'll have to do myself as there is no support available for the device.
If so, how can i confirm the make of the chip since there seems to be many revisions of the same available....

Sure. Use cloud storage (google drive, dropbox, box.net, etc) or access a shared folder on your computer via Wifi with a file manager such as ES File Explorer.

Scout eBay for a replacement microusb port board, then take your nexus apart, then replace it. Ifixit have a good documentation on how to take it apart.

remove internal SDCARD

my wife's One X is pretty busted, broken screen, now the thing wont turn on.
she doesnt want a warranty repair due to a bunch of baby photos being on the internal sd-card
thinking of just biting the bullet and i am wondering if i disassembled the phone, whether the internal sd-card is removable, and i can just take it out and put it into another sdcard reader or something?

nope it's not like a normal micro sd card...it's like a ssd and it's on the mainboard so a normal remove wouldn't be possible...
****, is there no way that card can be read then? bugger, she never signed in to google+.. no other backups.

the phone is really not turning on anymore? if not i think no way...except of asking in store if you want to repair with warranty that they don't touch the private photos etc...but normally they aren't touching them and even don't see them...they just repair the phone look if the screen or so is working again and yes..

H818N (India Dual-SIM Version) Dead

Hi All,
Just found that after the phone appeared to be overheating substantially, my H818N just died and wouldn't restart.
Tried everything, but nothing worked.
Took it to the local LG workshop here in Mumbai, India - where the tech pronounced the motherboard dead and that it would be impossible to recover the data.
Further, they would not give me back my motherboard (with chip/ROM), unless I paid them the full price in cash for it.
I paid up in order to secure my personal data, and researched solutions.
Apparently someone in Russia says it would be possible to recover the image.
Any feedback on this and possibilities - as I would have to spend a bomb on shipping it out with the restrictions implemented here in India? (I could mail it from a European location if I fly out on a trip, but have nothing planned)
Thanks all!

How much did you pay and what were you paying for ?
no warranty on your device ?
No personal data on your sd card. What was left on your main storage to pay anything for.

There was warranty on the phone - it was only 9-10 months old.
They replaced the motherboard for free.
As stated, they would not return the old motherboard if they were replacing it under warranty - as it would have to be returned into their system for inventory purposes, apparently.
And that is why I had to pay LG India INR 24,000/- = USD 363.64 to keep my old one.

When you said you tried everything, to recover it what did you do ?
How many days did you try before giving it in.
If you had a second chance what you have done differently regarding data storage so as not to end up in this situation.

Tried to turn it on using all different buttons depressed.
Tried to freeze the phone and then turn on.
Nothing worked.
I would rather ask here what software/apps we could use in order to backup *everything* in case this happened again - as apparently the backup apps appear to be quite fragmented and only do a few things.

Seems device is out of warranty . And yes there are solutions to recover the data but they are pretty hectic to perform. You can remove eMMC from the device and mount it another device which should be compatible with eMMC . And you are good to go. 2-3 days ago XDA published a article and told us that a guy successfully implemented 64 GB eMMC on his 16 GB nexus 5. the process is real hard and need particular skills . But if your data is that precious then you can try. And yes always backup your data ..always

Bhaisaab, the phone *was* in warranty, note.
Thanks for mentioning the removal of the eMMC - can you provide a link?
What skills were required? Soldering?
Watched this on YouTube - was this what you meant?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOYo9AcUQQI

Lol if the phone is in warranty then why they are asking for money to repair motherboard. i cant provide the link check that in XDA news . i thought i read that article yesterday or the before that. Link is there . Otherwise you can try in Nexus 5 forums . yeah soldering.

I paid the money to hold on to the old motherboard, as they wanted it back if they would replace it under warranty.

In the days when root was possible you could image the entire storage. Without root you can't do that.
App data stays in app folders some backup programs will take them others wont.
So the ext microsd card is the place to store downloads and everything camera related. From there you can back up locally or to the cloud.
Am really surprised this had happened to you as i always champion expandable storage for just this sort of eventuality against non expandable storage phones
There is another question to be asked here. Would you say your device went into a bootloop.
Were there any signs of flaky behaviour before this.
usually if a phone is getting hot best to shut it off and try after. it seems it got hot enough to affect some solder connections inside. The weather is quite hot these days so operating for long periods under elevated temperatures isn't a good idea.

Thanks - that opened my eyes for another option - but not sure if it's possible to get done (replacing the eMMC) in India...
Also, whether this would even work with the new motherboard? What about hardware IDs/linking to the previous software/system/OS?

Yes, it was getting quite hot.
(Was working Tinder heavy-duty - but now doing the same on my LG G3 doesn't affect that phone whatsoever! )
That was it. No other warning.

Hard brick Note 4 and concern about data privacy in exchange (pictures, notes)

I posted a similar message on another forum and got an excellent reply but maybe there are other options. My unrooted, nearly fully charged, never damaged (no physical damage) 1 year and 3 month old Note 4 suddenly shut itself down while charging and has not turned on since (weeks ago). This was after a recent OTA update to Android Marshmallow.
From what I read the most likely cause was an eMMC failure. I had no idea what this meant before reading about it but it's interesting to understand how the phone works and how it stores information. I've tried a new battery, a new charging cord, computers (two different operating systems), and other solutions but device has no power and is not recognized by a computer.
The phone is pending an exchange but my concern is that I'm not able to access the data (wedding pictures, work notes, important old text messages and voicemails) to transfer the data. I did have a recent backup of certain information (pictures primarily) so I know the value of backups but the small amount of data on the phone that was not backed up is important to me.
Even if I can't access the data to transfer it, I worry very much about turning in a phone without wiping the data. I've never done that before. Is it that much of a risk in this situation (or will the carrier simply switch out the motherboard and melt down the old one for parts and sell the phone as a refurb)? There are some options to get the phone fixed but I don't know if any would guarantee the data will be preserved and who knows how the current device will do for the remainder of the contract. Also instead of an exchange, do you think the carrier would let me lease a phone so that I could keep this phone and try to fix it on my own. Is that even worth it?
Thanks for your help.

Does Smart Switch sync new files only or copy all every time?

I bought 256gb Type-C and want to regularly backup data.
I found Bfilesync to sync folders. Not sure if it works. App updated 2 years before.
Let's say I used SW once. When I use Smart Switch second time weekly/monthly, will it only sync missing files or retransfer everything again and again?
i think it is incremental. you can have several full backups too if needed

I think you're correct. It's nice when it works but don't count on it!
I would never trust SmartSwitch with critical data... when these apps fail they can fail miserably.
You have a SD card slot; use a V30 rated SD card as your data drive, then redundantly backup that up. All critical data goes on the data drive.
Verify that backup copies are readable on the PC and for file number/size.
Never clone data drives, cut/paste direct copy only.
Never encrypt data and backup drives as you are the one most likely to get locked out.
My sd card slot is occupied by 2nd SIM
So I use Type-C USB memory
I want to SYNC (not COPY) cos it is more than 100 GB.
So, once I copy all files, I want only sync the new/changed files regularly.
Because 2 of my phones (Note 5 & Note 8) stopped working and I couldnt get data.
I don't know what the f*** is going on with NOTE series and if I made a mistake again by buying Note 10+

If you find a good sync app let me know. I have a low level of faith in them. SmartSwitch can't be trusted with critical data.
Androids should rarely crash but it does and will happen. You are what you load/download; keep trashware, malware and unstable apps off the phone.
Your bad for not backing critical data up; consider it a lesson in data/resource management... learn from it.
Having a SD card data drive is likely more important than a second sim card as you can more clearly see now.
I know the N10+ 4G Snapdragon variant inside out. Lol, there are good reasons I have two of them. Once optimized it has good battery life and is a fast, stable platform (Android 9 or 10).
I particularly like the Samsung UI on the 10+ and it's extensive family of moding apps and packages. Samsung tech support is simply horrible so you need to be capable.
It's a matter of preference of what you want and like.
The one thing this phone (and most phones*) require is a good case or it will get destroyed. They're heavy and they wuv to corner hit and face plant. A screen protector keeps the display scratch/mar free.
*high G impacts can damage/destroy mobos even cause internal damage to chipsets. A good case helps to spread out the G loading over a longer time frame making it survivable.
I will examine foldersync.
Not sure if it can handle such big data...
