How to fix my GNex now.!! - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Quite some time ago, the microUSB port on my Galaxy Nexus started having problems after it got wet in the rain. I have been using it as such ever since, the device does charge, but doe not go into USB mode no matter what I do. Also, during the last flash, my entire storage, including sdcard + system + data got wiped. Is there any way to get it back working without getting it serviced. Also, I have repaired my laptops before, no matter how serious the problem may be. How much more difficult, could it be to install the new replacement part myself.
PS: I live in Delhi, India, so there is no servicing available for the device as of now. Samsung refuses to be able to provide any support at all.

Take the phone apart ( pull battery, etc) and put it in a bag of rice. For a couple of days. Just to remove the moisture. Also dont use it. It can harm the phone as it became wet.

i have already done that... my problem is my phone is entirely wiped, no ROM on it plus no ROM on the internal sdcard as well....
Also, the microUSB port does not work any longer... so the think I was asking is ... is there a way to transfer a ROM zip without having to repair the USB port which in my case i'll have to do myself as there is no support available for the device.
If so, how can i confirm the make of the chip since there seems to be many revisions of the same available....

Sure. Use cloud storage (google drive, dropbox, box.net, etc) or access a shared folder on your computer via Wifi with a file manager such as ES File Explorer.

plz read the entire post before replying.... as I said there is no ROM...... i CANT BOOT IT....

Scout eBay for a replacement microusb port board, then take your nexus apart, then replace it. Ifixit have a good documentation on how to take it apart.

USB Port not working and need to return to stock

Hi everyone- I have searched and have looked everywhere. I just wanted to get someone's thoughts on how I could get my phone back to stock. My mini-USB port on my phone is damaged- I can't charge it unless powered off and it can't connect to my PC. Trust me I've tried multiple cables, have the drivers installed on my PC, and its not my USB ports on my PC. Since I can't connect via USB to my laptop I can't use ToolKits that are available
My phone is currently rooted and has a Unlocked bootloader. Are these the steps I will need to go through to bring back to stock so I can return to Verizon?
1. Flash Verizon stock ROM through CWM Recovery. Rom is found here:
"[ROM] mROM v2.0 JellyBean 4.1.2 JZO54K for Verizon - stock, rooted + MODs"
2. On Google Play I downloaded Segv's tool ("BootUnlocker for Galaxy Nexus") to Lock Bootloader
3. On Google Play I downloaded "Android Root Toolkit" to flash Stock Recovery.
4. Un-install app "SuperSU" and "Superuser"
Does this process look right? Any help would be appreciated!!!
FYI I did look at the following (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=27945515&postcount=128) but nobody has commented on it to verify it works.
UPDATE: In my last attempt I used the pliers and squeezed the micro-USB end and my laptop recognized it!!! I swear I did it before but i guess i didn't squeeze enough. Now that my laptop recognized it and was able to use the toolkit and bring back to stock and locked bootloader.
I am having the exact same issues you are. Looking forward to an answer
I had the same problem and had followed all your steps, various cables ect... try squeezing one of the mini USB cables a little with pliers! So the little gap is a little hard to push on to the phone. This worked for me!

I think I saw a post where you mentioned you did that and it worked for you. I tried squeezing a cable end already :-/ no dice

Be careful when you are doing dev stuff with a spotty USB connection. If it loses connection at a bad time (which anytime is always a bad time), you could end up with a brick.
I would also try cleaning out the USB port with a sharpened toothpick. I read this on Lifehacker, and they said it gives a much better connection.

Next time remove battery, clean usb port with alcohol and tooth brush, let it dry and reboot. Micro USB ports are not up to what they are being used for. Stupid Samsung. I don't think I've had a smartphone in the last 4 years that's lasted a year without something breaking .
Not a fix for your micro-usb not working.....but you can download airdroid from the play store and transfer files from your laptop to your phone and visa-versa. Its a free app and works just fine for me transferring files when i don't have a USB cable on hand

I believe dropbox serves the same purpose and is arguably easier to use.
Update: Went to Verizon last Friday and they didn't even check to see if my bootloader was locked. The person didn't even check much other than seeing if my phone charged (which it didn't). I did have the extra service warranty so he just had a new one sent to my house and didn't give me any grief.
Looking to unlock, root, and flash a ROM tonight

nexus not charging

i know it is already posted but my issue is different. Some can charge their phone when it is off but mine cant charge even if its off.
When its off and i plug the charger the lightning logo appears, it indicates that its charging but when i turn it on the percentage of the battery remained the same. it didnt charge at all. Also my pc does not recognize my phone whether if its off or on.
i tried with no luck changing rom, kernel, used different cables and chargers (i even used one from LG).
i want to take it back to samsung but my bootloader is unlocked, im using costume rom, and rooted. They will not accept or repair it
EDIT: i want to install the stock rom and relock bootloader but how? since my pc doesnt connect to my phone
Look in the development section and download the nexus toolkit.

Use a cocktail stick and try push the chipinside your phone slot upwards a little (if the phone were laid faceup on a table). Be delicate as you dont want to force it, but a little nudge up and your problems should aaaaall be resolved.
ive already done that no luck.
bump!
if i can restore my phone to stock recovery, stock rom, stock kernel, remove root will they accept it(warranty)? or do they have something to know that i modified my phone?
EDIT: because im planning to return in back to samsung

Is it a play store model or international? If it is international and you are located in the USA, Samsung will not do it. You can replace the usb port yourself..
mine too
Mine did the exact same thing. Good luck sending it in and having them actually fix it. I'm beginning to think their tech guys are really just a room full of chimps randomly putting stuff together.
I told them exactly what the problem was (because I looked it up before sending it in and my problem was the exact same as everyone else's) and they ignored me and just switched out the battery. That didn't work, so I sent it back again. Then, they updated the software. Since it's a hardware issue, obviously that did nothing. Now, they have repaired the PBA. I don't know what a PBA is or what it has to do with my USB port, but I'm betting the issue still will not be fixed and I'll have to send it back, yet again. After all this mess, I think I'm done with Samsung entirely.

probably the repair shop where you took your phone are just too lazy to repair. I hope they wont do the mess they did to you but i think it depends on tech guys if they are lazy enough to repair.

Did you get it fixed?
This is kind of what my phone is doing too (here's the thread i've made)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2059289
It will charge, but only to a certain point, regardless of rom, kernel, on or off, etc
over the past few days the maximum charge has gone down and down. Now it only charges to a max of 82%. I have 2 batteries and it does the same thing on each. My (hopeful) solution is that i bought an external wall battery charger and will charge batteries that way. I have the verizon model so if i wanted to do some sort of warranty work i'd probably have to go through them (not even sure if im still covered). I really dont want to deal with it. It boggles my mind why my phone is doing this though, charges fine but not to full. Oh well c'est la vie.

i wouldnt recommend that to people, for me it went from a phone with "phantom charging" (ie flashing on and off for charging) and issues charging to a short circuit on the usb connection, so that the phone switches off when a usb cable is plugged in. What is well worth trying first is simply giving the port a good clean, a little bit of alcohol and that same cocktail stick may well solve your issue. I've been left charging via a chopped up usb cable to the dock connectors.
i dont doubt that forcing the tab in the port may have worked for you, but it has failed badly for others (ie me), so just be careful suggesting it
I had a similar problem as my micro usb socket was damaged. Don't worry about sending it for repair, do it yourself. The circuit board with a new micro usb socket is available on ebay, I paid £5 for mine. Watch a tear-down video or 2 on youtube and you will be sorted.
The GNex is easy to take apart requiring just a small philips head screwdriver and a pry tool, i used a guitar pik, and these are also available on ebay for just a few ££'s.
Can do the whole job in 15 minutes.

[Q] USB connection Issues

For the past few days i have been racking my brain trying to figure out what went wrong.
For some reason I can no longer connect my phone to my computer to transfer/move files. it acts as if the drivers will not take. when i check the device manager it reads SAMSUNG_Android with the yellow !
I have reinstalled lastest drivers from Samsung site, removed all drivers and tried from Kies software/ rebooted pc and phone countless times. tired my laptop where it use to always work and same results. One this i did notice was at some point i got an error on my internal sd card and that i should format it. I backed up all files via ftp formated the internal sd and tried again.. all with the same results. I have also tried 3 different cables.
PCs both windows 7 one 32bit the other 64.
Phone e4gt rooted FI27, everything else stock
All and Any Help greatly Appreciated.
Here it comes!!
I'm hoping that I'm wrong BUT, that is exactly how my EMMC brick started. Let us know if your phone just shuts down and the only thing you will get is a blue light. There us nothing you can do then but take it back to Sprint for a free replacement. I couldn't figure my USB issues out for maybe a week and then it just died when i plugged it in to transfer photos I'd just taken 30 seconds before it died. Lets hope I'm wrong but I'm writing this with my new phone ate the exact same symptoms with my previous Sammy. Try to get your internal memory backed up now! Boot your CWM and mount your external USB. I wished I'd have.
Try a brand new cable and see if that helps. This phone seems to be especially intolerant of if connections.

I still say try a brand new cable. When I first had this issue I tried 3 or 4 old ones before buying a new one.
Today my brothers nexus s wouldn't charge except with one particular cable. I think that the cable and port are still within individual tolerances but together there is just too much play in the connection.

Help! USB not working, alternate ways to flash stuff.

Hello!
I have a Z1 compact with:
model number: D5503
with android 4.4.4 14.4.A.0.157
Usb port aint working, I have no idea why, I bought the phone from a girl and she didnt know what caused it. I have a feeling that she updated from 4.4.3 and something stopped working. When I try to use the diagnostics app that comes with the phone, it crashes and closes itself. The phone also tells me that there is an update available, 14.5.A.0.270, but it wont let me update it, it says "computer required"... So you see, if I cant use the usb port, how am I supposed to update it with a computer
I managed to root it using KingRoot (damned thing installed me an app that made my vibrator go crazy.. it stopped after I uninstalled it)
Ive been trying to find out ways to install recovery and flash the update, but I cant seem to find a way. I found about flashify and tried to instal NUTs dual recovery but flashify just crashes when I choose "select zip" or even when I try "select image" at the install recovery menu. Any ideas on how to proceed?
Thanks!!
If it still has warranty, you should return it. Without a working USB, you're pretty much screwed, sorry to say...
Can't you install ROM Manager from the Play Store, then install CWM or TWRP recovery, transfer a known working ROM wirelessly to the SD card and flash that?

Ok, didn't check that. Are you sure there is a problem with the USB port on the device? Maybe try changing the USB cable, some are low quality and don't make good contact. Maybe something went wrong during the update and it is just a software problem that can be fixed with a factory reset. If there is no warranty left, you could open up the phone and check for physical damage.
And if all that doesn't work, see reply #1.

I think it is.. I tried to charge it with an official sony cable and nothing happened, although I dunno if the cable is totally compatible because it came with my live with walkman phone. Maybe the jack is messed up. If everything fails I might buy a new one and change it, and see what happens. I did a factory reset but still nothing happened. I found out that theres another flash tool app called Rashr, I dunno if I could update to lollipop with it. For now I should find an .img file of a recovery that works for my device, any ideas?
thanks btw!
If the cable can transfer files and charge your Walkman it should work with your phone too.
You could try this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2620794 but I can't guarantee it will work. Maybe it is better to stick with what you have and not take the risk.

Nope, doomlords recovery wont work with my version but hey! I guess you're right! At least the phone is fully functional, except for the usb thingy. I'll just seize the day haha, thanks!!
How're you going to charge it?
If it still charges you can use it how it is, if not you're screwed.
You can't use the ROM manager stuff on the Sony phones because they don't use a normal recovery like the rest of the Androids. It has it's advantages as it's hard to really brick it but if the USB socket doesn't work you've got nothing to work with.
So find out if it's in warranty, if it is get it fixed. If it isn't you might have to fix it yourself or pay to get it fixed.
Although if it charges you could just use it how it is until you can pick up another phone, probably the Z3 compact if you like this size.
Fortunately the magnetic charging port does work it takes its time to charge tho :/
Maybe I shouldn't tempt you but have you tried this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/son.../stock-d550314-5-0-270customized-ce1-t3115487 with that Rashr app? It includes a recovery and is prerooted.
Ahh of course!
As you can tell I haven't had a Sony phone long, although I use the magnetic dock all the time!
It might be worth asking a few shops for a quote to fix it. I spoke to a guy who fixed phones for a living yesterday, he wouldn't give me many tips but he did let me know that Sony phones were all heat based to pull apart. Said they weren't easy, which is what I'd gathered.
I guess he doesn't want to answer questions as he'd rather do it for me and have me pay him!
Do a factory reset and teardown and clean the phone.

FYI, i recently opened mine with the help of a small travelling hair dryer and some prying tools. It was a 10 minute job. There are lots of videos on YouTube too. You just need some new adhesives or good double-sided sticky tape to put it back together. You will probably lose the waterproof sealing though.

Yup! They used glue because of the waterproof feature. Ive been thinking about that as well, going to a service shop. I do know how to modify circuits but at least if they mess up, theyll have to answer for it .

Hair dryers ftw! I do need to open it up, to change the housing because its all girly pink.. Although after a quick look I cant tell the phone seals have already been broken, so someone tried to open it and didnt close it properly. Ive been looking for spare parts online and Ive found some pretty decent ones. Battery cover, frame and stickers. They come from china so I wouldnt risk figuring out if the phone is still waterproof after the "refurbishing".
If you're gonna replace the battery cover, might as well go for the japanese glass version (z1f).

Data recovery

Hi are there any services or is it possible to recover data from fully dead phone (water damage) ?
regards
Pull the rear cover and disconnect the battery.
If not damaged by corrosion it may be salvageable.
Otherwise a profe$$ional service might be able to.
How long since it happened?
What kind of water?
it fell in the pool. i already took it to 2 repair shops 1 being the official samsung center. official said that corrosion damaged everything. Other shop were trying 1 week until they said cant retrieve anything. So now im thinking to look for specific data retrieval companies

The chipset with the internal flash memory will need to be removed and remounted in a test jig or same model phone. Even that may not work.
You have a SD card slot in that phone. Why weren't you using it as a data drive? All critical data should have been on there. Although that should've been backed up as well, the card likely would have survived.
sd card was not used. i had "mega" as a backup but i dont know what happened when i checked mega only had empty folders

Use multiple hdds for backup. Copy/paste/verify for size /readability files and folders to backup.
Maybe nothing can be done now, but in the future you can prevent this from happening again.
More lessons from the U of Hard Knocks... been there, done that. I lost a whole database that was 30 yo and not replaceable
30y of data ouch..well mega was added after screen was broken and replaced so data would not be lost. and yet again managed to mess it up

Yeah backup is a pain. I do it manually even the sync. You want multiple copies that are time staggered. I have lots of old hdds that store extra copies just in case. I may lose some data but never all.
An OTG flashstick can be used as a quick "dirty" backup but make sure most of the data is backed up to at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC.
One near lightning strike can wipe a device...
You can use a cloud service but even then I still use hdds on top of that.
thanks for the tips
