Searched, but found no anwer to this question so.....
Does anybody know how to edit the word substitution list for SMS texting on the TMO-US branded TP2? I had a cooked Touch Flo Rom on my Wing that handled it beautifully, but the stock substitution on the TP2 only seems to automatically capitalize the first word and is missing a few things that I really got used to:
* "i" by itself got capitalized (even in the middle of a sentence)
* "dont" got its apostrophe along with "didnt", "wouldnt", etc.
* I can't swear to it, but I even think it managed some other contractions like "You've" and "You'll"

its because word completion doesn't work. search for word completion & you'll find countless threads on how to enable it again. Warning though, it will disable the functionality of FN+SYM to get the symbol menu
All the threads I found are talking about a T9 word completion, which I don't really care to use. I'm looking for an auto-correct functiont that automatically replaces "misspelled" words like "dont" with the correct spelling ("don't") after you hit the space bar. I don't like word completion, per se. I just use the auto-correct as a short cut so I don't have to "Alt-K" to get an apostrophe. Has anybody worked on this, or have I missed the thread that discusses it by not searching the right terms?

If you set up the word completion like it says & then use Advanced Config to set the number of suggestions to 0 then all that will work is the auto correction

Thanks, I had decided to take the plunge and do the reg hack like it said, and discovered exactly what you said I'd find. Thanks for being patient with my stubbornosity. Still no fix for the [Alt + ,] for the symbols, then? Granted, it's pretty well worth the trade-off for me, since I rarely go into the symbols menu, but I hate knowing that something's "broken", even if I don't use it much.
I am comfortable with my iPhone and have nothing against AT&T. I am thinking of moving to the EVO for its large screen and less expensive family plans.
However, I am afraid I may miss features I am used to having on my iPhone.
Can anyone answer these two questions I haven't found answers to yet?
1. Do you from you list of contacts pick a list called favorites to more easily dial from than going through all contacts?
2. While typing (or replying to) email, can you select a block of text and then cut and paste it?
If anyone who knows both phones knows of other things I may miss from the iPhone let me know please. I went to the Sprint store yesterday but the sales person really wasn't helpful - he tried but did not know a lot.
HTC Sense has a favorite's widget you can use and there is a list of favorites when you bring up your contact list as well. I don't personally use it but some might find it handy.
Selecting text is definitely different than the iphone...it's not somthing I've found myself doing often so I can't answer that personally but I know the option is there to enter a "Select Text" mode when you long press on some text.
I came from the iPhone and left it when the 3Gs came out and the thing you'll probably need adjusting to is the game selection...android market is improving on that but it's not been around as much so it's lagging a little behind in that aspect.
Lastly, the one thing I missed absolutely most when I made the switch was the keyboard...I've yet to find a keyboard that does prediction as good at the iPhone's keyboard for the tap-to-type method.
However, if you're willing to try a different method, Swype has some distinct advantages for typing on a screen (look once for the first letter in a word and look away while dragging your thumb around the screen in the rough shape of where you think the keys would be and it works great for me).
Ultimately, I would conclude that the phones are just different...it's like going from Mac (in it's current incarnation) to Linux. There's some things they do share in common but a lot of what they do, they just do it differently and both pretty well.
What are some small aspects of WP7 that you appreciate that others may not have noticed?
For me, after about two or three weeks of having the phone, I realized something about the text message tile. This is most likely old, but, if you have no messages, the smiley will be like this , if you have a message - ;-), if a message failed to send - :-( (or something like that, I don't quite remember it), if you have 4 or more messages - :-O
It was just something that made me smile and think, "really? who would have thought of including that?"
Anyone else have moments like this?

Really, that happens? That's a really nice touch!
For some reason I always loved how the arrow button rotates around when switching between the Live Tile view and the Apps list view. I don't really know why I like it, but I just do!

Yes that really happens, it is touches like this that make the device a delight to use, I really like the on screen keyboard, it feels just right in use
It turns out, every time you type on the soft-keyboard in WP7, it’s a subtly different sound. Whereas the iPhone has only one audio sample that it repeats every time you tap on the virtual key, WP7 plays one of eight variations in a loop.
Although it’s ever so slightly different, Microsoft claims they’ve done this so its more organic like footsteps down a hallway – the same but different, and less “obnoxious” if you were to press the backspace repeatedly. Matthew also claims feedback from “power typers” suggests the sounds deliver a better tactile experience.

seconded on the sw keyboard. And the keyboard is also good. It keeps up with fast typing and multitouch as well as text correction is smooth as butter. This has been the most pleasant sw keyboard I have ever used.
I think I can say another good touch is the start menu button. It is so good for quick one handed operation especially on the dell venue pro. I have to put a bit of force so its not pushed by mistake

I didn't realise that about the keyboard sounds, it definitely does contribute to the pleasant nature of the typing experience
I really like the sense the phone gives (through its use of the panoramic screens) that you're the one controlling the phone, not the software. For instance, the speed at which you move through the content is dictated by the speed at which your finger moves, not some predetermined speed associated with an invisible switch you flip when your finger swipes across the screen.
I found an interesting place that had developed an api for developers to use that allows them to access their voice UI system. I think this would be great if someone implemented it into an app of some sort, and with the increasing access for developers into the phone, I think a siri like app for wp7 could be very possible.

Isn't Siri just a rip off of what Windows Phone 7 already does? I can do everything with my windows phone that the Siri commercials show and have been able to for some time.

That is coming. I don't use appointments so my point still stands. I can ask weather, tell it to read text messages, etc which is what the commercials show.

Hold Windows button "Weather Whatever City"
Also usable is "Open Weather Channel" but if you going for Siri like usage just say "Weather Whatever City" add the state if it's not a well known city. =D

Laquox is obviously trolling or just severely misinformed.
Siri is just voice recognition hooking into the wolframalpha.com database. So it is just a bigger database than what MS has. That can change and likely will.

If you set your browser and search region & language to US or UK English, you will see the top result as the weather of the city you're asking.
The result is pulled from MSN weather

Not trolling just stating that most of what they show Siri doing you can already do on a Windows Phone (in the US at least). Now in the future we will probably get features like appointments, more language support, etc
My main point is most of what they show off as "new and innovative" with Siri has been in windows phone 7 for a while. They just polished it. Give it time and the same features will be a part of Windows Phone 7 (in most languages)

Here's a list of things that Siri does in the video, and next to it I check whether WP7 Voice Commands can do it:
Read out and reply to an SMS message - YES
Play a music playlist - NO
Find local traffic report - NO
"Text my wife I'm gonna be 30 minutes late" - YES (though you have to use her specific name and dictate full SMS)
Weather report for SF and Napa Valley - YES (though she uses more natural language and WP7 you have to do two searches via Bing)
Weight conversion - NO
Set timer - NO
Reply to SMS - YES
So out of the 8 functions shown on the commercial, WP7 can do 4, though 2 of them aren't as easy / functional.

Lol, this is another funny fanboy thing I always hear; that Apple just take features from other phones, and "add polish" then try and sell them as innovative. It misses the entire point; PEOPLE BUY IPHONES AND IPADS BECAUSE OF THIS "POLISH". Mp3 players were around before the ipod, ditto touch-screen smartphones, ditto tablets, and now ditto voice commands. The polish (i.e. making it work well and easy to use) is what makes all the difference, and is exactly why Apple products sell so well.

I know how it works on WP7. After you say "weather blahblah" it responds with "searching weather blah blah" then it shows data in Bing. Now by the time my Windows Phone is repeating back to me what I said, you have this:
So let's not be delusional and think that our current implementation of voice commands is anywhere near what Siri offers. You can say ANYTHING you want to Siri and it will instantly read aloud a logical response in the same fashion a person would. It doesn't just bring up search results on a page, it's a conversation with your phone. I don't know about you but I have NOTHING of that sort on my two Windows Phones. If anyone needs a better understand of what Siri actually is, see here:
I'm afraid I have to agree with Aphasaic2002. Tellme can do half of what Siri has been shown to do. Just tried to go through that list & I've also checked Tellme's help. Siri also do text-to-speech for the result, which is the "cool" part. Tellme just display the result but doesn't stroke your ego. ;-)
However, it seems that Tellme has gotten better at foreign accent. I'm a Chinese living in Singapore & there're plenty of stuff that Bing don't do here. Point is, Tellme can catch my dictation 60% of the time now, compared to a year ago. So if someone took up that job offer to enhance Tellme, we can expect more from Tellme in the future.

Yes, Windows Phone does NOT do that, but I have never messed with Siri to that degree. I still say give it time and we will see the same functionality in windows phone. You have to remember Windows Phone 7 is still very much in the catch up phase of its life cycle. The features I always see demoed though were indeed on windows phone first (read text messages, text people via voice commands, check weather, etc)

I agree that windows phone will most likely bring their voice support up to par with siri, but im also suggesting that with these API's, we can have that functionality right now.

lolz, dude, I think you're overreacted. My post is only to clarify that weather search can be done in Bing search by using Voice Command, but NEVER saying that Siri is sux or Siri is a copy from MS TellMe.

Perhaps you should also make a compare list with WM 6.5 Voice Command with Siri, then you will see both works similar but with Siri it is more natural language approach. TellMe IMO is only a half-baked function of Voice Command. Would like MS to implement TellMe with more functions...

Agreed with you. The "Polish" and Marketing that Apple Inc have is somehow superb than their actual products. (sorry to make that statement because I always think that Apple's products are damn overpricing)
I've been a long time user of Windows Mobile (up to 6.5) until I changed to Windows Phone 7. I have also been using Windows Voice Command in Windows Mobile and was wondering why all the available functions were not ported to WP7. In WVC you can actually say an artist name and the media player will start playing songs in your phone from that artist. You can also ask the time which will be spoken back to you. I guess it takes some additional programming to add the same features to WP7.

i'm a chinese singaporean too, and guess what? i can ask my phone to text/call my friends too. thing is, it's able to capture and very accurately (90%) pull up the correct contact even when the subject's name is in hanyu pinyin (for you european folks, it's like our chinese names, but spelt out using the english alphabet).that's pretty amazing imo
at my recent university graduation, the organisers were using ms's text to speech, and they also accurately dictated out asian names, regardless of whether it's chinese, vietnamese, indonesian or malay names.
ms has the core of the voice command there already, which was already present in wm. they just need to polish it up, and hire apple's marketing team
I am pretty sure I haven't lost it and my memory is tricking me, but before some update or another if you were entering text in almost any app (SMS most notably) and got to the end of the piece of text and saw that word correction had put in a word you didn't want you could click on the word and the word prediction list would appear again and a simple click to change to another word???
I am not 100% sure when this functionality disappeared, must be at least 6 months ago. I thought it was just some glitch and was expecting it to return when resetting. Just did a reset (Android 5.0.1) and still nothing happens.
Drives me crazy, have to place the cursor after the word, delete it and re-type. It was so sweet before.
Please let me know if I am wrong - and if not is there any way to get this functionality back.

Try this! open messages, new message, to the left of the space bar hold comma, go to advanced and tick word prediction and next word prediction!

Appreciate your help. I think I have tried turning on and off every setting I can find related to word prediction/correction. nothing seems to help.
So do you have a M8 with 5.0.1 that does as I describe? I would really like to know if it is just my phone. Fixing it if it is must then be possible. If I imagined it, well then I can forget about it and seek other help

My M8 is currently running Android 5.0.1/Sense 6, and although I don't use the stock HTC Sense keyboard, preferring instead to use Fleksy, I have noticed this annoying peculiarity with the Sense keyboard myself.
Here are some further observations...
With the stock Sense keyboard, a word is only correctable (with selectable alternatives) only as long as the word being typed remains HIGHLIGHTED. As soon as you hit the space bar, with the intention to type the next word, the HIGHLIGHT is gone, and the original word can no longer be corrected or alternatives suggested.
The HIGHLIGHT then shifts to the next word being typed, and with possible corrections and alternative suggestions for this new word.
Tracking back over a given paragraph (or even to just the last word) and manually highlighting a previously typed word, doesn't, as you might expect, provide any alternatives or spelling corrections.

This behaviour is entirely at odds with 3rd party keyboards like SwiftKey, Swype and even Googles own keyboard, where ANY word in a given paragraph can be selected and corrections/alternatives suggested.
The stock Sense 6 keyboard under Lollipop 5.0.1 seems incapable of retrospectively correcting previously typed words!!!
I'm no programmer, but it seems to me, that the stock Sense keyboard is only capable of correcting a word while it remains in the 'buffer'... that is to say, while it's being typed and so long as it's highlighted.
The instant you move on to the next word (with the space bar), the word is 'forgotten' by the keyboard and can no longer be corrected or alternatives suggested.

This sort of thing is difficult to describe, so I suggest you download Googles keyboard from PlayStore... type some random passage in Google Keep (or wherever) and then using Googles keyboard, randomly select a word in that passage and you will see that Googles keyboard correctly identifies the selected word, and suggests alternatives.
And then try the same experiment with the stock Sense keyboard...

Yes! That's exactly it - like you say pretty difficult to describe concisely. The strange thing is that it used to do it, possibly before Lollipop.
Now that someone else has confirmed it seems a general issue with the HTC keyboard I will give up trying to fix it and look for another keyboard.
