Question Does anybody use Google One for backups? - Google Pixel 6 Pro

TL;DR Has anyone had issues backing up MMS using Google One and successfully fixed the issues? Mine randomly works whenever it wants to and then wipes itself out
I have been a Google One subscriber for a few years now and I have found that the backup piece of it doesn't work right with MMS. I have a case opened with G One support that is now about 1.5 years old and still they haven't fixed the issue. What I've seen is that MMS either doesn't backup at all or it will backup for a few days and then just randomly get wiped out during a subsequent backup.
I've gone through 3 different pixel phones, 3 OS updates and too many to count versions of G One, Drive, messages, play services, etc yet nothing seems to fix this.
Of course when I had posted on this forum about the 12L issues and eventually ended up performing a device wipe and then also used the Android online flash tool, I lost nearly a gig worth of MMS pictures. I was so pissed bc what I thought was happening, wasn't. I do always make a backup with SMS backup and restore app and still do have that database but I've found that restoring from that app ends up causing duplicates and weird corruptions (unless something has changed in the past year).
I had this case open with G One support and saw it was still open so I replied to it and let them know the issue was still happening after all this time and why hasn't it been fixed yet. They basically responded back with tier 1 troubleshooting steps I've performed a million times which by the luck of the draw, may or may not fix anything. If it does fix it, it works for like 2 or 3 days and then it's broken again anyway. This case is supposedly escalated and they have "reached out for updates" to the dev team but I've basically gotten zero useful info.
Does anyone else have this issue and have successfully fixed it on your own or somehow had Google fix it? If interested, I can list out all the troubleshooting steps I've done but essentially, the super troubleshooting step is a factory reset and I've also reloaded the OS completely. I've also deleted nearly all my text that had pictures in there (but after restore showed as a blank spot where a pic should be but nothing) just in case there is corrupt data anywhere. I now have about 25 or so pics that have come in to my messages since the last round of troubleshooting and again, randomly it backs them up showing the MMS database is like 70-90MB (as it's growing from new pics) and then randomly it'll wipe it out and I'm back down to under 200KB and that's where it stays until the next time it randomly works.
Very frustrating

Sounds weird but I never had that issue. Why don't you try a SMS back up tool?

I've had this issue extensively with Google One backups. It will say MMS is backed up, but never restores it. Or it only restores half of them or something like that.
I switched to Swift Backup and honestly it's 100% better. It's like an old TWRP backup. I've had to wipe my phone many times due to mess ups, but swift backup has helped me restore all my data.
I also talked to G One support, all they told me is to not restore data, then download the app on a fresh wipe, and restore a backup. But even then the app doesn't work like it's supposed to.

Thanks for the input. I downloaded Swift to see how that works out. I am still wanting G One to be fixed bc it's so nice to have everything all done "in house" but I'm at my whit's end with G One and it's terrible SMS/MMS backup. Everything else seems to backup and restore just fine. I just don't how Google can't code software to work with its own stuff correctly yet various 3rd party devs can do it.

Swift is pretty good because it can use that extra GOne storage to upload backups. I haven't had an issue with it yet. Reminds me of the old TWRP backups or Titanium Backups. I would love if GOne would work properly lol. I want to use it too. But it is just super unreliable with MMS specifically, and then some app data doesn't restore properly. Google not being able to have a backup solution as good as iCloud/iTunes is baffling to me too. But you can still use GOne but just don't backup SMS/MMS and use Swift for that. Unfortunate you have to use third party but this has worked really well for me.

I only got android one because I ran out of storage and couldn't do back ups iv not used mms in ages so couodnt tell but I did get a message saying about mms back up sorry not much help I mainly use WhatsApp to send pics and recently used rcs

Yes, I do and it makes me sad it doesn't work consistently

The thing about swift for me is when I restore my backed up messages, all my blocked spam gets restored too. Wish the devs would work out a workaround for that. Sounds silly I guess but it would be a pretty neat feature for swift.

Anyone have Handcent delete all your messages for no reason?

I had a ton of text message threads in Handcent.. Just rebooted my phone like I do all the time. And all of a sudden they were gone! I tried to do a data restore from Titanium but that never seems to work for texts
Not the end of the world.. Just curios as to why it happened..
I have read before that sometimes HC will FC if too many messages are present on a thread, I guess this could be qualified as another side effect for a database that has become way too large for HC to handle.
This just happened to me again. After a manual reboot.. ALL of my text messages are gone. They're gone from the stock messaging app too so I'm not sure where the problem lies. I did a Google search and see other people are having this problem as well with just the stock messaging app. Any ideas on a fix? I'm missing some important text messages.... ugh..
Just noticed my saved wireless networks are gone after the reboot as well....

I can't help you with the root cause of the problem - I've never had it happen to me but a couple of friends have (all msgs wiped).
If the messages are missing from Handcent, they will also be missing from the stock app - there's no difference because the messages are (or should be) in the same place and you're just choosing to view/send them with Handcent or the stock app (or another of your choosing).
I CAN, however, help you try to minimize the effects of this happening in the future, as well as keep multiple records of your SMS...
I use two apps, together. The first one, called SMS Backup & Restore, by developer Ritesh Sahu has been a god send for me. You can backup all your messages and restore them, fully - it even gets the conversation threads in the right order by date upon recovery. In addition to manual backups, you can schedule backups.
While backing up is fast, I have to warn you that deleting all current messages (if you have a lot) and restoring them can take time. Restoring them, however, shows you a status bar so you can track its progress while deleting them just says "deleting" and you never know how long it will be. (The same dev also has a sister program for phone call logs - it's lightning fast and just as reliable/effective).
The other app I use is called "SMS Backup" by dev Christoph Studer (if you have trouble finding either of these in the market, look them up by searching for the dev's names). What this app does is work quietly in the background to send / upload your SMS to your Gmail. You can set which label you want to apply to them in Gmail, and then in Gmail set a filter to have them skip right over your inbox. This app also lets you have them appear as read when they are uploaded. All in all, you never even realize it's working and your Gmail will never be the wiser, until you have to refer back to an old SMS - maybe a phone number or address or some other vital info sent to you over text... and you can just go and find it at that time safely recorded in your Gmail.
I hope that helps!
Best of luck. If you're having trouble beyond disappearing texts, you may have other more serious underlying issues...
The problem with the backup apps are obviously I need to run them. Who thinks to do a backup prior to doing nothing more than a reboot?! It's crazy that the phone just deletes them on it's own. Searching on Google shows that this problem is wayyyy too common.

who will do backups on a regular basis? folks that have lost data in the past. the more significant the loss, the better their backup habits.
i do backups. it seems the previous poster does. heck, i bet you start doing backups too.
the more you work with technology the more likely you are to ensure that your important data is at least duplicated. things like pictures, audio, video, text should be considered. this goes for desktops, laptops, netbooks, phones, etc. if it stores data, runs an OS and a users interacts with it...it will fail eventually.
sms backup works quite nicely. i found it after i lost my text messgs once.
I run Titanium every single night by schedule and nandroid every other night. I also have automated backups on all my PC's. But I send and recieve at least 1000 texts a day.. So when my texts randomly delete themselves at 5pm.... A backup made at 2am does me no good for my text messages....
Then modify your backup routine. I your backups won't recover your data...you are using the wrong tool. Sms backup can backup every X hrs.
Trust me..there is always a way to protect data that you find important.
I agree, the app shouldn't erase your data.
you can complain and cry....or...complain and recover.
The choice is solely up to you.
Good luck.
I back up all of my texts to my gmail, makes for great searching!

Where is the option to backup every X hours? I've been through the settingss several times and don't see it
I've been using Handcent for 1.5 years now with no issue but just saw this with a customer who has the Thunderbolt. All messages are gone and she was not on the latest version which is 3.9 now. I've got 3.82 on my Evo so I'm going to leave it there till I know what's going on with this.

[Q] Friend is freaking out...no idea what happened

So my friend has a Dinc and not so much knowledge of phones. i tell her about the awesomesauce of root and she tells me to take care of her phone. so i root it with revoked (not the forever one) and start tweaking. ok, tweaking done - LauncherPro, Swype, Handcent, SetCPU, autokiller, adfree, etc etc. all was fine for about 2-3 weeks until this morning she wakes up to swype/launcherpro/handcent force closing and all her contacts are gone...she said it reverted back to all old settings.
possible update from verizon?
i'm in CT and she's in NJ, so i can't exactly take a look at the phone. any ideas as to what could have happened? she WAS drunk as fck last night.
android market shows no apps in downloads. and unable to search for anything.......
First, it's kind of silly to customize a phone so heavily for a person who has no clue how to support it when you're too far away to support it.
Second, I hope you taught her how to nandroid because it sounds like she's going to need to restore. The only thing I can think of that would fix the issues would be to fix permissions and reboot the phone... I can't really think of any settings that would cause those issues.
crap. well agreed on the first part...second part i should have thought to make a backup when i finished...which i didn't. the few things i did didn't seem like much really.
i think something happened while drunk...which could be anything...but now i'm not sure what to have her do. she lost all her contacts so i guess it doesn't matter if i have to have her reflash some basic rom.

Did she lose the contacts from her Gmail account, or just from the phone? They will be restored if not lost from Gmail when she gets it back up and running.
there's really no such thing as "just a basic rom" nowadays. devs put a lot of effort and time and code into them, what you should do is some research and have her reinstall a STABLE rom . either way there should have been some sort of backup made, lol, otherwise id say you're a ****ty friend and has every right to be pissed at you lol. with that said have her try to get into recovery and restore a backup.

Thanks for the couple of ideas, but like I said, there is no backup to fall back on. The two things I missed while tweaking her phone was the initial backup and showing her how to restore. I'm not new to this, but not perfect.
Past those obvious mistakes, pointed out many times, right now a few things have changed. Astro no longer works either, and she can't reinstall anything because the market is blank. She did get some contacts back somehow. Is there a way to replace the market to fix it?
Sent from my FroyoEris using Tapatalk
You could have her try installing alternative markets like applanet...if it doesn't crash on the install or launch of the app...then she should be able to get the ball rolling on a resolution... might I add, applanet is just an example of an alt market... google alternative markets, you should easily find five or six different ones... if that fails... try apktor.....

Have your friend RUU the phone. If they use Google services the contacts will be restored.
She doesn't use enough google services to get everything back...told her to usaa them for contacts at least.
Will a factory reset do the trick? She's prepared for the consequences.
Sent from my FroyoEris using Tapatalk
Did you load up Titanium backup for her? How about Backup Assistant?
In any event, a hard reset may fix the issues - just trying to help you save some of her data / contacts.

That only happens if the contacts are Google Contacts, not Phone Contacts. IIRC, all new contacts are Phone contacts by default.
On a more serious note, this sound very familiar to something I ran into while flashing a new ROM on vacation (Note to self, dont disturb a perfectly stable phone while 800 miles away from home!). Everything I tried to run seemed to FC and I couldn't get into the market or an alternative to download fresh copies of apps. I ended up reflashing the ROM, I dont remember if I tried a factory reset or not but ultimately it sounds like a wipe and clean install of a stable ROM is your best friend right now (unlike your current status with her lol).

SMS apps freezing my phone!

I just recently have been experiencing a very annoying problem and I'm not sure the cause. At first I was using Handcent, and now I'm using Go SMS. When I receive a text, the app freezes completely and I can't open it back up without rebooting my phone. I'm using everything stock except the launcher (Launcher Pro), but I doubt that has anything to do with it. The default messaging app will show a blank conversation list and when I try to write a new message, it's dial-up internet slow (yeah, THAT slow!). The only solution I seem to be able to find is flashing the phone or just trading it in for another one.... Don't really wanna do that so it would be great it someone could help me find a solution! Thanks!
I've had a similar experience. And when you say stock, do you mean as in unrooted, or like sprint lovers? But try this uninstall both go and handcent from your phone, reboot, then re-install one and try it. You're rooted, and on CM7 [happened when I was, no more though] do a clean install, wipe everything, flash the latest gapps, and then install the app.
Oh sorry, unrooted. I wouldn't say Sprint Lovers either, more like too lazy to root lol. But anyways, yeah, it's just unrooted. I've uninstalled handcent and reinstalled it twice already with the same results. I haven't tried uninsalling go sms, but since the same thing is happening I figure it's not the apps fault, but perhaps something going on with the phone itself.
Under those circumstances, I think a quick factory reset, as much as a pain it'd be, would clear it up. But look into mybackup in the market. I think its a backup for apps for non-rooted users and I believe free, that way you can just restore since you can't use titanium backup.
Aw... Well it looks that way. Thanks for your help. I'll look into that backup app. I'll let you know how that goes.
Anytime man, hope it turns out well. I'll be around if ya need anything else.

Does Samsung Cloud restores app data?

Has anyone already tried this in real life?
Does it backup ALL of the app data like game progress and every single detail like Apple does with its iTunes backup?
I find this really really useful.
Thanks!
Nobody has tried it yet?
Good question, that would actually be really useful!
Well, this is a little embarrassing. But, last night I went to clear cache in recovery after making some changes in my disabled packages. I accidently did a factory reset, instead. I can confirm that it does reinstall your apps and reinstalls the theme etc. I don't play games on my phone, so I cant help you there. I had to resign in to banking apps, xda, re add my card to Samsung pay etc.
So, Ill have to say, no, it does not restore every detail as you mention. Mostly it restored my settings and "look and feel" aka theme/icons. My contacts where back, and txt messages where back (but the txt messages could have been the AT&T service). It did download my custom font, but didnt apply it.
In summary: It put my apps back on my phone I had downloaded but I to resign in to everything. I also had to import my package disabler pro script. Contacts where back in as well. I was also disappointed I had to set up all three of my emails again. I wish the cloud service acted like smart switch, but it does not.
Oh and be warned the phone is extremely laggy during restore operation. The phone also becomes pretty hot during the operation. In total it took me about 30 minutes to get back everything 100% the way I had it.

Well, that's quite disappointing. I read articles saying it could restore app settings, but it seems it's not like iTunes still, where it restores an exact copy of your previous setup.
I have this now on my S7 Edge and so far it always fails to backup the App section, there is always an error. The other sections complete without issue.
Are your App backups working prior to doing a restore?

No prob! Yes, I agree in being disappointed. Hopefully they will tweak the service to be more comparable to an iTunes restore. Or, it's possible we are missing something? I do not find any in depth settings for back and restore for Samsung Cloud. As far as I can see its either "on or off".

If you have any apps or data from apps on the SD card or are using the card as adoptable storage, it wont work.

Only restores app data for some Samsung apps like weather and clock nothing else. It does restore all apps even side loaded. It does restore most of the os settings but not all

It restores data for some apps. For example, data for Color Note are saved and restored. Data for And Ftp are not.
Same for Desktop version and the direct cable connection version of Smart Switch.

They probably use identical technologies.
On the S7 Edge Loaner that I tried, it got back the Apps, but had to re-sign into all of them. Also, No themes were applied and settings failed to carry over
It fails, dismally. Like previous reviewers have stated, Samsung's backup/restore feature does NOT backup app settings as promised. It does nothing more than reinstall apps, without any customisation, as if you've never used them before. What's more, if your new handset has updated firmware or different settings to your previous one, then you may find your "restored" apps suffering compatibility issues and causing system instability. Until Samsung's backup/restore software functions the way it's supposed to, you're better off installing the apps the old-fashioned way, or using Google's backup/restore option, which at least avoids conflicts.
You would think if anyone could get this to work it would be Samsung, using their app on their phone. Good one guys.
For those that tested this app, did your backups fully complete or did they fail near the end?
Mine always failed at the end when doing the apps, but I just got the Nougat update and the phone initiated a backup and it finally went all the way.
So I'm wondering if now it would be better.
Samsung backup is terrible.
It will definitely NOT backup game saves. I recently confirmed this. It will backup game settings, saving you a whopping 30 seconds of having to endure the tedious task of changing them to what you want, but the save games you spent hours/days on? That isnt important to Samsung.

Question Google One MMS/RCS Restore

Hey all.
Anyone else fine that pictures don't restore using Google One / when ticking the option to restore MMS. Luckily I use SMS Backup and Restore so didn't lose anything but seems like the restore function of MMS/RCS pictures is broken.

Okay so I back tested - 6 Pro to 5 and basically if I waited 45 minutes a notification comes up to say restore the MMS photos. That's crazy it takes that long.
My full backup worked perfectly through Google One so you know why? MMV
