Hello all. I have a Telus provided stock S3. My headphone jack has started having issues and I'm not sure if it is due to the firmware upgrade that Telus rolled out a few weeks ago or not because it has been at least that long since I last used the headphone jack (I think). On the old firmware the phone used to have a little icon in the notification bar when I plugged them in. Now, it does not do that. It also doesn't seem to be redirecting the sound to the headphones, although I think it may half recognize that they are plugged in. I say this because if I load a youtube video, it plays on the main speaker, and then I plug in the headphones, and while the external speaker goes silent there is nothing coming through on my headphones. I have rebooted the phone. The headphones are known good. Help?
EDIT So, apparently, even though I combed the main settings menu, somewhere on this damned phone (and I mean that lovingly, I just wish the settings were all in one gd spot) there is an option to mute the headphones. How did I stumble upon this? I went to test out the headphone issue by playing a video I recorded with the phone with the headphones plugged in and, lo and behold, on the video, I see an option for volume which was set to mute. Turned it off mute (how it ended up on mute in the first place is beyond me) and it is fixed. I have no bloody idea where else this little icon is located in the vast menus on the phone, but hopefully this will help the next poor soul with the same issue.
tl;dr: Played video recorded with phone with headphones plugged in, found there is a headphone mute setting. Who knew?
Hi, I noticed the other day and today that media (audio from videos and music) had randomly stopped playing through my note 2's speakers, no matter what I did to the sound and volume settings. I have managed to narrow down the problem and have found that this occurs every time after unplugging the MHL cable. I still get sound from notifications, just not from media.
The only way I can find to fix it and get sound back is to reboot.
Does anyone else have this problem? I'm wondering if something is faulty (MHL cable or phone) or if it's a software issue.
Was hoping the Pie update would resolve the issue, but its still the same post update. I've used HiFi Status and Dac Fix, which show HiFi output when earphones are connected even without the Quad DAC turn on in the settings. However, every time I put it on, the audio is muted.
Any fixes or suggestions? This glitch apart, love the phone...

Issue
When the headphones (the ones that are bundled with the phone, but I guess it applies for others as well) are plugged in, audio will work in headphones for few seconds (or minutes, if you are lucky), and then the audio will stop (or rather, pause) playing, as if your headphones are disconnected. I tried with music players only, because when headphone is disconnected while music is being played, the music playback will be paused, not sure what happens while playing games but I think audio will start playing from speakers. Anyway, going albeit in depth, when headphones are plugged in, I get a notification from "Samsung USB-C headset" which would say "Checking firmware version", audio can be played via headphones during this time though (naturally), the notification would stay on for quite a few seconds and then disappear (not sure what this thing actually does during this time but OK), audio would still play from headphones, only until you get another notification from Samsung USB-C headset. When this happens, any audio playback will be paused or routed to the speakers as if the headphones are disconnected. You can press the play button in the music player app that you were using to resume playback (can't tell what happens while playing games, because haven't tried), and the audio will play from headphones (sometimes it would play via speakers as well), and it will continue until you receive the same notification again, and this goes on and on. The cycle is like: Plug in headphones -> receive notification -> play audio -> receive notification again which pauses playback -> play audio again -> receive notification again which pauses playback -> .... and it goes on like this.
This is a very frustrating issue as it will make it impossible to use the headphones as this thing repeats itself in intervals of few seconds. Sure, one can use wireless headphones but there are many people like me who prefer the wired ones over the wireless ones. Nonetheless, for normal users this will look like a headphone disconnection issue, and audio via headphone is a basic thing for a phone (or at least, it should be), and having it basically broken is straight unacceptable.
Cause
So like I was saying, we were getting notifications from the Samsung USB-C headset app which caused this disconnection behavior. "Samsung USB-C headset" is a system app by Samsung which kinda manages the firmware versions and codecs and stuffs like that. I haven't checked the logs, and cannot really say for sure, but its the version 1.2.05 version of this app that is causing all these troubles, I think its broken and Samsung needs to fix it ASAP.
That being a system app, it is not possible to disable or downgrade it, I tried various ways to do so, but its no longer possible (for system apps).
Ways to fix
Factory reset - Yes yes I know factory reset won't be a feasible option for many as it can be a bit tedious to go through the backup and the restore process that follows, especially when it is your primary phone (which is why I mentioned "ways to fix" and not "solution"), but yeah, factory reset will fix this issue. What factory reset will do is it will "downgrade" the Samsung USB-C headset app to version 1.1.51, and this version seems to work correctly. When you plug in your headphones, it will say a firmware update is available, simply follow the steps (basically dont unplug headphones while update is in progress), and it will work fine from then on, no issue. Btw, I am on June security patch at the time of writing this. From my observation, I would suggest to not update the Samsung USB-C headset app, and let it be in version 1.1.51. To prevent auto update, go to galaxy store, disable auto updates (luckily this is not there in play store).
This is a software problem, not hardware and Samsung needs to fix this ASAP.
TLDR;

Ways to fix - Factory reset and prevent auto updating Samsung USB-C headset app. Otherwise wait for Samsung to fix.
It didn't work.
You can go to older version of the system app without performing factory reset. It is possible. Go to Apps->then select System Apps option by tapping on 3 dots at upper right side, then select app Samsung USB-C headset-> tap on 3 dots at right side you will get option Uninstall Updates once you tap on it, it will go to last available version or factory version.

getting this problem in my mi phone
I know this is old but am getting this same issue on my Nubia red magic 6 pro too, it's really frustrating.. Audio keeps cutting when am using type c audio. example same as you explained. I did a Factory reset and did test all wires. and even bought new adapters for audio and all have same thing. seems like it's a software issue.
Hi guys. I downloaded an app called Android hidden settings from the play store. I already use settings database editor as well as the hidden settings magisk module, but I saw if one thing inside this app I haven't seen anywhere else. There is a setting called Hi Fi DAC pop up. When you click on it floating window opens and it gives you the option to turn on DTS x and the hi-fi quad DAC. you can toggle the switch is regardless of whether or not you're playing music so I figured this wouldn't do anything. This is what I noticed:
When the floating window first appears, DTS is already enabled, I disabled it and toggled the DAC switch to the on position and proceeded to open my music player. From here I opened the full settings menu and clicked on the sound effects section to check if the DAC was switched on in the phones full menu and the toggle is actually still set to the on position. Figuring there would be no change in sound, I messed with the left and right channels anyway as well as the sound preset and digital filter. Before I go further I forgot to mention that I do not have headphones plugged in, I am playing music directly through the phone speaker. To my surprise, the audio quality does change and the volume is limited to 75 as if a headset was plugged in.
I opened up the Flinger Dump app to check audio output details but it is very limited to what it shows. I'm wondering if anyone with more knowledge on the topic and the proper tools could do some further testing and see what changes actually occur. I use UAPP, and its output is showing differently then flinger dump is. Could be a complete waste of time, could lead to something further...
If I have not misunderstood, what you mean is that with that app, you inadvertently activated the dac or the dts for the speaker's sound channel, right? If so, it would be amazing to be able to modify how the dac behaves without headphones. Perhaps it could be activated for the speaker, perhaps not, but what you propose is very interesting.
I'm honestly not sure. I don't believe so, but it's definitely done something and I don't have the knowledge or the software to see exactly what has changed. Basically, unless you have headphones or an auxiliary cord plugged into the phones Jack, you can't toggle the Hi-Fi DAC button to the on position as I'm sure you're fully aware of. This hidden shortcut allows it to be toggled on without anything plugged in to the headphone jack. I played some tracks thinking that there is a 99.9% chance that the audio quality wouldn't change ( or the sound wouldn't change, I don't know about quality ) but to my surprise it did change the sound. As long as the DTS:X is turned off, all of the other options had some sort of effect on the audio. The sound preset, the digital filter and the left and right channel knobs all had some sort of effect on any audio I played through the phone's internal speaker, and the volume limit changed from 100 down to 75, exactly how it would behave if headphones were plugged in.
I just need someone to help figure out exactly what this is changing, because my music app is showing 16bit and various Khz from the 300 range to over 1000...and as you can see from the screenshot the FlingerDump app is showing 24bit to 32bit and depending on the track but the KHZ remains the same.
It may be a dead end, but I figured that since there is an actual change in sound.... there may be a possibility for someone with more knowledge than me to take this and run with it and see where it leads. I removed all of my audio mods except for JamesDSP and John Fawkes DTS tuning because every other mod made my phone upsample everything from 44.1 to 48 and it was pissing me off. The results above were with USB Audio Player Pro, but I disabled bit perfect mode when I tested this out in order to avoid interference with the results.
I'm on stock android q (through fota) and out of curiosity i tried that. Nothing happened. I can tap it and nothing. The same with dts settings. Turning quad dac to small speaker for me have no sense. Idk how circuits looks, but i think system itself don't let reroute signal through dac to speaker. BUT if ypu want to check then try that.
Open terminal app and type
su -c tinymix
And look for what is on screen.
If it's state is closed then quad dac is not working. If state is hifi, then it's working.
