Soooooo, I have the new Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and with news of the recall it has me thinking... I have noticed some serious real life performance issues with simple task on my note 7. Scrolling is laggy, keyboard is too. Apps take a while to open (simple apps like text or even phone calls). I don't know if it will be fixed down the road or not.
I have seen the OnePlus 3 and it has me thinking that I should turn in the note 7 and make the switch. My biggest reservation is that there is no expandable storage.
I would like to get some XDA input on the note 7 vs the One Plus 3. Just not sure what route I should take!
Any input is very much appreciated.
Thanks!
I don't see any lag on my note 7. It's very rare

Lag could be a result from battery problems. My N7 works even better than S7edge. I will chose a replacement for note 7 with note 7 anytime

You should have added ZTE Axon 7.
for 450 EUR (vs 850 EUR for Note 7), Axon 7 is a real competitor.
don't forget that, although all 3 devices have AMOLED screens,
only Note 7 and Axon 7 are QHD;
Oneplus 3 has low FHD resolution.

Remind me, I forget, what other mobile has the S-pen? one gets what one pays for and those less expensive mobiles will serve their customers very well. What you totally fail to realise is the Note 7 is NOT a bog standard flagship mobile. Its aimed at high end users who will make use of the S-pen, 64GB internal memory and a possible 256GB expandable memory to name just a couple of the Note7's basic characteristics.
Ryland
LOL there's no comparison, one is a mid range bog standard phone and one is top quality premium computing device.

I think many chose the note 7 as a complete pack, some for the s pen, some one posted that it would be like comparing cars, there are cheap well equiped fast cars, that do tje job very very well, but then the premium ones that cost much more and have similar characteristics, but much better looks and feel, and yes, some litle things not found in cheaper ones, so, at the end, it is a matter of taste, if you can afford what you really like an desire

I m very dissapointed, with the Note 7!!! A big big flop.. and i dont care either for the exploding battery, nor the scratches! I cant believe that after 5-6 years owning a Note, they did not yet managed to eliminate the lag and shutter on the newest.. every year the same Samsung [email protected]
Im going down the OnePlus 3 lane, after trying both of them.. i shared my experience here..
https://android-repo.com/2016/08/26...op-and-why-you-should-buy-a-oneplus3-instead/
I was thinking about getting the OP3 as opposed to the Note 7. But I realized that the OP3 wasn't going to offer me anything new. In fact, it would have offered me less (other than savings in money) considering I was coming off my S7 Edge.
I knew that the OP3 was going to be a temporary workhorse. Rooted, **** ton of roms, then I'd get tired of it after like month 3 then I would end up getting the newest Google device, while regretting not buying the Note 7 yet. Note 7 just has everything that can last me a legitimate year. Expandable storage, fast charging, multi window which i actually utilize every day, s-pen which i actually use many times throughout the day.
Sure, the price is up there. But this note 7 is a long term phone.
I have owned both phones. While I had the op3 since release and the note 7 for less than a month, I have to say the note 7 is auch better phone. I don't really need root, and didn't flash custom ROM on the op3. I used both android pay on the op3 and samsung pay on the note 7 daily and samsung pay is much more convenient. The op3 display isn't bad but the note 7 is noticeable better. I find battery life to be a bit better on the note 7. Both phone got me through a full day with moderate to heavy use but the not tends to have more battery at the end of the day. Dash charge was very convenient on the op3 and it did seem to charge much faster than note 7 (I don't use wireless charging). OxygenOS was a tad better than TouchWiz in terms of less manufacturer bloat, but it's not a deal breaker for me. I don't know if I will keep the note 7 after the new Pixel devices are announced but if I do I can see myself keeping the note 7 for 2 years.

I'm thinking about switching to the Exynos version. My carrier is letting me return the SD version because of the recall and I'm thinking might buy an unlocked Exynos version since this one lags.

I have very little or zero lag or stutter on my Exynos. It's the smoothest Touchwiz phone I've ever used.
I have the exynos model, I have no complaints, very smooth, no lags, I had note 4, and it had many shortcomings, I am real happy with my exynos note7

Yep sadly the Snapdragon.. every year the same [email protected] On my Note 4, i couldnt also believe the difference between the Exynos and the SD, but when i swapped for the Exynos, i was amazed!
Sadly getting an Exynos here in Greece, is kinda difficult @ the moment. Its sad to see Samsung repeating every year the same mistake. Bad memory management, bloated etc..
I also have the Snapdragon. Would It be possible to get it switched when I return it? I thought Exynos was only certain areas?? Never heard of it being in USA..

I originally bought the SD820 version from AT&T in the US. It was slow, lagged so badly, had terrible battery life and I ended up returning it. I replaced it with the G930FD Exynos version and it is a night and day difference!! The Exynos version is so much faster, smoother, the battery life is probably double and I love it. Food for thought.

Also, tell from which device you are upgrading or staying...?
Big news!
quote from http://bgr.com/2018/02/25/galaxy-s9-preorder-pricing-best-deals-t-mobile-vs-verizon/
"Best Buy’s preorders will open on Friday, March 2nd, and Best Buy has a big headline offer to try and entice customers. Best Buy customers save $100 when preordering on a Verizon, AT&T or Sprint plan, on top of saving up to $350 when trading in a qualified smartphone. That’s total savings of $450, although as we note below, Verizon and AT&T are charging significantly more than Samsung for the device, so assuming Best Buy is using Verizon and AT&T’s pricing, the savings compared to buying from Samsung are not as great as it might seem."
That's 390 for S9+ and 270 for S9
What!
Currently have S7 Edge and i'n thinking to get the S9+, but i'm very disappointed with the design.

Nah!!! Sticking with the best phone...One Plus 5t....
If it doesnt come with the OEM unlock issue the note 8 has (talking about exynos, i dont waste money on crapdragon versions) i will get one.
If it does then ill pass on it like i did not on the note 8.

In all likelihood I'll be going to the S9+ from the Essential PH-1. The Essential was a terrible choice for me but I couldn't justify over $1000 for a pixel 2XL. I'll likely get the S9+ through my carrier. I've gotten quite used to stock Android over the years so a skinned version on the Galaxy will be different. We'll see....
I'll be getting the S9+ at the beginning of 2019, when the price starts to decrease a little. I'll be upgrading from my S7 Edge which just turned a year old few weeks ago.

Dont do it.
I got a S8+ last december and i regretted it. battery was the worst (3,5-4h sot max) and the software lag too annoying. samsung is good for the first 6 months, then they begin to age rapidly
everybody knows that so i had sell my s8+ for a lot less than i bought it for. got me a mate10pro, happy now.
if u want s9 so badly, try to look for second hand around 2 months after launch... i think thats the better choice if you still want to experience the high

I would have to agree on the first part, where Samsung's software does not age beautifully most of the time (my S7 edge thankfully is still running well and has maintained it's fluidity even after a year). Samsung still needs to learn to prioritise on optimisation IMHO. They focused wayy to much on the UI/UX till they forgot about the core system itself.
And yeah. I might also consider going for a second hand S9+ if the reviews don't go according to my expectations. I'll be waiting for MKBHD's (popular tech guy) review and will be watching it the moment it becomes available.

I will agree, upgrading from a s7e is useless, the only reason that can be is a little more processing power, but still it isn't enough, and s7e for me too is running smoothly although there had been issues with build quality, but i really don't think mate 10 is more in performance than s8, maybe in other areas like ui etc it could be. I will pass on s9 and wait until there is a phone with real upgrade not some marketing gimmicks.

True, the mate10pro has exceptional battery life as well as lag free UI though. Before s8 I had a huawei Nexus 6p, had great battery life too (got warranty replacement after 1.5 years with fresh battery) so the s8 kinda feld like a downgrade.
I think the CPU speed is highly overrated nowadays and does not make a real impact on everyday use. (Apples Chip ist supposedly 2x faster than 835 but does the iPhone feel 2x faster?
All in all I upgraded for the bezelless screens... Anything else my Nexus 6p was almost as good at.
Anyone else who has a 2016 flagship (s7e or mate 9 or iPhone 7) should not upgrade for another reason than the larger screens... Anything else in the new phones has only improved a little and does not justify the price in my opinion (unless having the latest tech is part of your lifestyle)

Agreed , but iphone 8 and X is almost 2x faster in real life too, so yes cpu power does impact in real life, search for their app loading times and video editing times on web, the fastest android phones were note 8 and then s8, they were lagging almost 1.5x.
And yes mate 10 got excellent battery life too thanks to its 4000 mah battery, i think every phone should have atleast 4000 mah battery these days,

Well I don't know anyone who is editing video on his phone... That's what I mean with everyday a friend friend of mine has iPhone 8 and it doesn't feel significantly faster in my opinion, it's more about ram keeping apps for running (so you don't actually need to look for launch speed) and internet speed
Yes I think the biggest Upgrade in the future needs to be bigger batteries in order to keep up with the screens and all the other new stuff

You know I have the s7 edge since release, it is still a beast. Can handle any game on the play store, lags here and there. But dont thing upgrading is worth it imo. Maybe when foldable phones come lol
Which custom rom & kernel developers will be getting the S9/S9+ ?
If not, will they be getting the Note 9 instead ?
I think i would be upgrading because this sounds like a perfect replacement for iphone-7. As for performance , I think it depends individual to individual on his config and usage patterns. There are 3 galaxy phones in my house including an aging s6 edge and all seem to be working fine.
Yes, its hard to match iphones in their speed and zero-lag but there are so many trade-offs that purchasing a iphone ahead of a s9 or a note-8 is not a worthy option.
I'm on Galaxy Note 4 and LineageOS 14.1. UHD video recording is not working and I need it. Better low light performance too on S9+. I don't like the curved glass though. I'd also much rather take a removable battery over any kind of IP rating but gotta move along with the times, I guess. I don't undertsand the all-glass exterior idea at all - it's slippery and a protective case is a must, adding to the cost.
Definitely getting an S9 as long as there's no down payment on Jump on Demand. On a v30 now, and the thing is just crap. It stutters - literally. As in the sound stutters and I have to reboot to fix it. It also has all kinds of lag on bluetooth stuff. 8 years on Android and never had anything this bad. Going back to Samsung and not looking at LG for a long time again.

Go exynos for sure, the OEM unlock issue is a helluva alot better to have than have the device be totally locked down.

5G is still on hand 71 for T-mobile so if you have a Qualcomm US Note 10 plus and don't get service at work then 5G won't fix that issue yet.

So far only talk of Ultra 5g, if there is a Ultra without 5g and a lower price I'll consider it but right now as much as I want the camera I can't justify it 6 months after buying the N10+.

The only turn off is When enabling 120Hz, it will set the display resolution to FHD+ / 2400×1080. I might just wait until the new note since the utilize the spen alot
idk yet, I'm waiting for a definite info on the new 3D Max fp sensor if they'd add it to the S20 or not, that's the only thing I don't like on my N10+. Other things to consider is saying goodbye to the s pen which I like a lot.
As for 5G? - am ok with LTE for now since it'll take some time(years?) for 5G to get a full implementation everywhere, right now it's just a promise for which we have to pay extra 'up front'.
Another pressing question is about that 108 mp, specifically: how will the image processing handle all that load, I hope they will make people happy with the results.
So, if not the Ultra model, for the sake of saving some bucks, what's good the S20+ brings? Right, a new SoC, 120Mhz(most of us will probably switch back to 60) and better then N10+ cameras – is that enough to get rid of N10+ and additionally shed an extra $500 - $600 for the trade? Me thinks not.
For better pics I'd rather buy the new Sony A6100(~$600)
Definitely will get the S20 Ultra....keeping my Note 10+
yup, i'll definitely be getting it. had the s10+, note 10+, note 10+ (star wars edition) and now the ultra once released. I get bored rather easily and always want the new hotness. and since the pixels have been letting me down lately, my only guilty pleasure are the Samsung phones. I hope there's a ceramic version like the s10+.
I am definitely going to get it - can't wait to see what the camera can do. From what I have read, while it is a 108 mega pixel cameara, the S20 ultra will combine pixels (four pixels) to help improve how much light is going to come in - I don't understand the specific workings of it all - but in the end, it sounds like it is going to be amazing. Camera, Big Battery, Huge Screen, no Bezels, it sounds like it has everything youi might want in a SmartPhone. Just a few weeks away, I can't wait.
I also like to get the best of the best when they come out like @chetly968. Kind of "oooh, shiny, me want!" situation but I'm not completely room over by the leaked specs. I know that it's a good upgrade to the S10/+/e range and the Note 10 range but it's like what @mzsquared said, are the upgrades worth the extra cost you'll have after trading in the Note 10+ 5G.
I'm going to watch the event and see what they say. It's usually the case that all the new upgrades in the S range get to the Note anyway in addition to extra upgrades.
It's a matter of do you want to wait, how do you use your Note 10+, do you use the S-Pen, would the experience be the same if you get the S20.
I gravitate towards the top phone on the Note range when it's launched, primarily because the Note range have more of a square body rather than the rounded corners on the S range.
I guess we'll see what they have in store for us next week.
Nope not getting it , It's not a upgrade from Note10 Plus to a S20 , basically it's a downgrade, so i won't downgrade, I'll wait for the Note11 or Note20 what ever they will call it. So for now I'll stay on my Note10 Plus, Also the Note10 Plus will still be better till i get the Note11 or Note20.

I feel like I have no reason to switch really.
It's not like getting a hopefully much better camera is going to launch me a photography career.
I really don't see any benifit when this phone is already fast, modern, and super adequate for life.
Save the money, go on a trip, cause having the latest phone is not a measurement of living life.
The performance gains will be minimal. I won't be upgrading.

Reserved S20+ anyway, now I have a few days to actually think about buying it for real, will see...
My reasoning starts with the trade value, Samsung offers $700 for my N10+, most of the Swappa's listing are right now in mid $600's(not to mention the involved hustle), sad, but that's the reality of a free market. Maybe I could settle down now with this S20+(5G though the 5G 'grid' has not been built yet around where I live)
It'll probably still suck with that same ultrasonic fp sensor I guess, am getting used to it on my N10+.
Definitely keeping my N10+ until the N20+ or whatever they call it. 120hz screen only at 1080p according to MKBHD. At least thats what he said in his video.
S20 looks ugly to me with those non curved edges, not a significant upgrade from Note 10 plus imo

that huge battery may not be as impressive as it sounds when its got to power all that.
also...some reports say ultra has a true optical zoom of 4x and others say 5x...either way i do believe the 10x hybrid optical as they call it will be optical level...seems the further digital zoom will be more useful than it sounds as it appears to have good stabilisation.
they did mention in reveal yesterday that a lot of the software improvements mentioned will come to the s10+ in updates.
also...you could buy two 65" lg ultra hd hdr smart tv's with freeview and satellite tuner built in for the price of s20 ultra*[https://b-static]*...and still have change

Sorry if this offends or seems controversial, but I can't help but surmise that people considering buying the S20 don't really need a 'Note' device anyway.
For me, in my daily life, the 'S Pen' is indispensable. No matter the features offered by any other device, without the 'S Pen', it's just not complete.
Signing and translating documents, editing media, and even typing, with my large stubby fingers, are much more efficient on a 'Note', resulting in higher productivity.
The S20/+/Ultra, whilst very good devices, on paper at least, just can't cut it for me.
So, no thanks, will wait for the Note 20?, but even then, it would probably need to incorporate all under screen sensors. So, maybe no update till the Note 21.
Still kind of early, but anyone here upgrading form there note 10+ to the note 20? I usually like to keep my phones for 2 years, but the Samsung trade in makes the upgrade appealing. Share your thoughts! who will be upgrading or who will be rocking the note 10+
Here in Italy the value of the note10+ is just 330€ if you trade it in...
I think it's better to sell it privately
There is really nothing on the Note 10+ I find lacking. I think the only reason I could see upgrading would be for 5g, but I expect it to be years yet before that will make sense, even though I live in a large city that is already getting coverage. Even then, current speeds are perfectly fine for my needs, so it would be about coverage.
I will upgrade next year, among other reasons, I find the cam module of the note20 extraordinaily ugly, I hope they correct it for the 21 model

I think the same as you are, and 5G is the only thing that maybe the reason (not sure, the 100-megabyte/Sec I get now is pretty good.) The only thing the make me upgrade devices is the Samsung deal of a trade in. I got my Note10+ (USA) for $485 and returned a S9 so it was a no brainier..
I swapped a 9 for the 10+ as 5G was in my area, no reason to really go to a 20 and to be honest the "discount" you get returning the phone at a year through Samsung is pretty poor, was only about a £100 reduction last year when I returned my Note 9, I got more discount trading in an old S6 I had lying around to get the Note 9 through Samsung. sure it's nice to have the latest phone but you are basically paying 50% of the cost to keep it a year and then have nothing to show for your money.
I probably won`t I have the Note 10+ 5g already with ATT in USA , I originally had the s20 ultra 5g, and i had too many issues with the camera and the Note 20 looks fugly with the camera module. I`ll wait for next year.
I ***** and complain every year, but im all in to upgrade..lol

Yes! Next year processors will have amd graphics, I am eagerly waiting to see them!
I'll probably get the Note 20+ or Ultra edition as the standard is rumoured to only have 60hz & no LTPO...
Honestly I'll probably skip next year's as I don't have faith in first generation AMD graphics, it'll be a first for Samsung devices and I think it'll take a few iterations to iron out any issues.

I somewhat agree with you, but I expect the S21 to be the guinea pig for that matter…
Yeah to me the Galaxy S phones tend to be a test subject as the Note tends to come 6 months later with similar hardware just with the kinks worked out. so by the time the Note 21 comes out they will have had several months of in use testing done by the Galaxy S users to refine it for the Note users.
I def will be upgrading to the note 20. I love my note 10+. There is even a small window I might go for the fold 2.

I will upgrade next year, among other reasons, I find the cam module of the note20 extraordinaily ugly, I hope they correct it for the 21 model

IKR? Always been a fan of the Note, but the S20 and Note 20's camera is just fugly, no other way of saying it. And hell, it's not like it's that big an improvement over the Note 10's camera. Actually, in some cases I've seen, the 10 is wahaaay better. And the 100x times zoom isn't worth that bump - a gimmick that I'd use a few times... maybe.
I love my note 10+ the only real issue i dislike is the lack of headphone jack. Now I know that all smartphones are leaning towards this " trend" and I can buy and adapter, but I realy wish they would have included it
I hope they Not go with the trend !!! The trend is to make round corners phones, that looks like dildo. I Hate that ****! That's why i bougth 10+ 5g (an old phone from august 2019). One of the few with a square screen.
10+ 5g here. If you can imagine that some headphones does not work on my 10+... "does not recognise"... I have Oneodio Headphones Professional Studio Dynamic Stereo DJ. With OnePlus adapter usb type C to 3,5mm jack.
On my OnePlus 7 Pro sound was Awesome! On s20+ 5g (sold) sound horrible, but the headphones workt.
And of course i hope the Greed stops ! And the price will Not be 1500 Euro.
They gave me a $400 trade in credit on my Tab S4, so this cost me 250. Will I notice much of a difference?????

You wil definitely notice the shty lcd screen.
Did the same exchange (for S7+), and I do really love some stuff:
- 120Hz screen, this is very noticeable if you are used to that frequency.
- Official keyboard accessory isn't crap anymore, it won't disconnect easily and has touchpad. No more external mouse.
- Camera is best now, as its located horizontally instead of vertically
- Fingerprint reader >>>> Optical
- RAM improvement is great. Many people don't often see that, but if you are multitasking is quite easy to observe. Specially if you ran Linux inside.
- Audio is definitively better.
If you are artist (I'm not), S-Pen is noticeably better, more responsive. If you have some official cover, it won't fall easily. S-Pen protection at S4 tab was awful, I lost that S-Pen once while traveling.
I also did the exchange/trade in with my old 12.9 inch iPad Pro 2017 model. They gave me $500 for it which is like practically what I bought it for almost 4 years ago. So couldn't turn that down. Unfortunately Pro-Motion on the iPad Pro (120hz refresh) really spoiled me and there was no way I'd be able to go back to 60hz refresh. Luckily Samsung came out with these otherwise I'd of been forced to get another iPad Pro. Not that I hate iOS but man after using it for 4 years and then coming to Android again you really notice how restrictive iOS is.
Have had it for about a week and a half now. I grabbed the S7+ with 256gb storage mainly for the extra 2 gigs of ram. I don't tend to really use to much storage, but figured the extra 2gb of RAM would be nice. Not sure if it'll makes a difference but I figured it can't hurt and may help future proof the device a bit down the line as I plan on keeping this for years. I heard the LCD screen on the regular S7 is actually quite nice so you should like it. The speakers are excellent, get very loud and sound good. SD 865+ makes the device very snappy. The fact it comes with a S-Pen is also awesome. I find myself using it often even though I don't do any kind of drawing or art like stuff.
I've been very happy with everything so far and I'm sure you'll love it as well. Samsung did a great job this year with this tablet!

I got the WiFi only version. Surprised AT&T doesn't have it yet. That seems weird. Its been on the market for like 6 months.
I've only owned one tablet with data and that was actually the first generation of this tablet, the Tab S 10.5. I don't know if you would be able to ever change the carrier though. I was going to say I wouldn't think so but honestly I'm not sure. I had mine stolen all those years ago so I never saw if I could unlock it. I presume once its paid off they wouldn't care about it being unlockable. But what do I know lol. Hopefully someone will respond who can shed some light on this for you bud.

I just got the S7+ a few days ago, really liking it so far. I got the WiFi only model. Had a Tab S6 LTE through Verizon but I never really used the LTE as I was always in a place with WiFi. Went with the unlocked Samsung version of the S7+ since Verizon likes to remove features like Call and Text on other devices. I love that feature between my Fold 2 and S7+. Plus I wanted the larger screen of the S7+ as I use it primarily for media consumption.
