Awful news.
Vanced apparently got a cease & desist and will be pulling all links in a few days. Current Vanced should still work until the api is updated. Possibly up to two years but Google could update it anytime. Really awful news since there is currently no good alternatives on Android other than Adguard (which thankfully I have). With Adguard, you can play a video and then click share and select Adguard and it will play the video ad free in the Adguard app but no background play and no sponsorskip.
We can only hope that somehow an alternative is released before the api is updated.

YT Premium is priced to high for me to subscribe too. It's basically another Netflix sub which is ridiculous since it doesn't even include sponsorskip.

nevermind.. checked their official Twitter and confirms it. Kinda figured this would come eventually. Can't get in the way of a company making it's next million to put in the top execs pockets. This is definitely a punch in the balls.
I'm sure someone will come along with a new alternative.

True but Newpipe is just not an ideal alternative. It's slow, the background popup player is buggy and doesn't allow any touch inputs behind the pip screen other than pulling down the notification window and selecting an app through settings. The feed doesn't include what I would expect based on my subs and watch history. I'm thankful it's available for us but it's not even close to being a good alternative to Vanced.
Mod Edit: Quote removed since post removed.
Tried using this just now but it still shows adds and has no background play. Not sure what is needed to get what you and their website claim?
Potential alternative:
Brave Browser blocks all ads and will allow PIP background play as long as you minimize video while it's playing in Fullscreen mode. Seems to work well. Just wish we could get sponserskip and dislike counter but still, this will be usable once Google updates the api.
RIP Vanced. I have Premium but i'll miss the dark OLED theme and the sponsor/reminder skips.
This sucks
Hopefully apkmirror won't take the links down, I've used it for 4 years and had no issues, my grandma uses it too haha
I've got YT vanced on all my family members phones both for root and non root
Sad news, seems all apk links have already been removed from their site already? (Can't download anything from api.vanced).
With their code being available on GitHub & old devs/mods already distributing their own builds earlier in the year, I don't doubt that this will be back in some shape or form (probably by an anonymous dev) when an update is actually needed. I can't really understand Google's decision to take this action though; no one I know personally who owns a Android device knows what Vanced is when I mention it (even the techy people) & whenever a company goes on the warpath in a attempt to destroy something, multiple clones always pop up (sometimes even becoming bigger than the original because of news stories, etc).
I downloaded the Vanced Manager apk and saved it to my Google drive so I will have it to install on phones I upgrade to in the next couple of years. I have YouTube Premium but use YouTube Vanced so I can override the video codecs and watch 4K 2160 videos in 4K instead of the limit of my phone.

hell Id say I'll start taking over the project, but the whole me vs legal Google thing is a little terrifying to think about. I can only imagine how many thousands of people use Vanced, now that Google has focused it's attention to this, they are more than likely looking at each download as potential lost revenue. My thoughts are with the dev who created/maintained this. I really hope Google doesn't try to destroy him financially. I'm certainly not a law student, but I could see them put together one massive lawsuit to try to bury the person/people responsible.

Vanced manager is just a front-end "installer" that links to a download url or api. This will probably stop working in a few days or weeks (hopefully I'm wrong). Hopefully, there will be a decent fork of vanced. It has to be completely anonymous though - and that's the tough part.
i'm still using it on my samsung galaxy core prime run 4.4.4 because youtube is no longer supported as below screenshot.I used older version of youtube vanced because it isn't compatible with latest version of it.I tried to install newpipe, youtube go.But newpipe do not have google play services to sign in google account because i want to i want to comment on video live stream on youtube.Youtube go use google play services so it allows sign in google account but it doesn't allow sign in multiple accounts.I installed vanced and it is great when it allow me to sign in google account and use multiple accounts.I'm so sad to hear that youtube vanced will cease
I hope there will be an app to replace youtube vanced when the api is updated and it will support older android like my smartphone because youtube is no longer supported on my device

Is there an app? Or do you have to use the touch Youtube site?
from what i've read, the first time you visit a youtube clip, it will ask you to download an extension, and after this it will play it like would any other video. it's not a seperate application persay, but merely just an extension to IE to allow you to play the youtube clips.
I could be wrong on this, but I have seen videos of youtube playing, so it's definitely there.

I just read on Wikipedia it will run it in a sort of media player app, but they state that Adobe Flash 10.1 is on the way so this could be improved, or hell, there is the possibility updates will bring Youtube apps and better support.
There is built-in support for viewing the videos, but Google will need to develop a separate Youtube app if you want the off-browser experience.

Chances are that Google are already working on an application for YouTube.
App in Marketplace that plays Youtube over 3g is craptastic, horrible quality over 3g. Seriously over 3g the quality is worse than on a Blackberry. WTF MS?
Microsoft doesn't own YouTube, so I dunno why you're asking them.
And the quality is probably poor because it's playing 240 or 360p version of the videos instead of HQ.
That's why Google needs to release a YouTube App.
Microsoft has more important things to worry about, like, the actual operating system.
The youtube experience on WP7 is amazing.. its the first phone i ever used that didn't require a full fledged app. I sort of like it that m.youtube.com works out of the box and there isn't "an app for that" - with that being said, people are free to use the youtube api and make their own apps and google may do just that. However with m.youtube.com the quality for me is amazing. I don't watch it over 3g since AT&T rapes us with 3g bandwidth costs but over wifi the quality is beautiful. M.youtube.com also works with your login id so you can easily play your favorite and surf the website. It isn't a pretty package, but hell, sometimes its better that the web integration works this well rather than waiting for a required app
Apparently the youtube app adjusts the video settings if not on wifi. Which doesn't make sense since my 3g connection can more than handle youtube....
Maybe contact the developer and see if we can get settings adjustments.
edit: nevermind, it lists microsoft as the developer so I guess maybe an update will help?

The Trial is full featured, and has ads only in the menu (not in the videos), but you can download and keep only 3 videos per day, so no restrictions on the streaming.
For those wondering, the app uses the 360P and 720P MP4s used by Youtube, downloads them, and plays using the phone codecs directly (although the player has a different UI).
This is similar to, say KeepVid or KeepTube in its extraction of Youtube videos.
The quality was awesome. The UI of the app, not so much.

As far as I know, there are NO limitations on viewing videos. But if you want to actually keep it, then there are 3...per day. Need to confirm this though for myself.
nope its not 3 per day, it just state I reached my download limit for trial...
I downloaded this, good find, thanks
It's very good, but would be awesome if it linked into your Zune library (i.e. the videos downloaded appeared in Videos), but I'm not sure if that's possible or not...
The trial is 3 vids total. Figured I'd better buy it in case it gets pulled from the Marketplace
So I was on SuperTube (paid version) trying to play a music video uploaded yesterday.
This specific video had up to 1080p quality, and I decided to stream the 720p version on SuperTube. Five seconds later I received a "Open Video Error!".
After using Keepvid.com to download this specific video, it turns out the video was part of the new wave of WebM encoded videos on YouTube.
To further confirm this issue, I specifically looked for WebM encoded videos on YouTube, sent it to my WP7, and copy-pasted the video name into SuperTube to try. Same error.
We all know that Microsoft is not going to support the codec, and SuperTube depends on Zune to play the .MP4 contained videos from YouTube.
Also, in some cases, the native YouTube app is unable to play the videos.
It is important to note that YouTube still encodes 360p videos using H264 and not WebM, as I was able to play those fine on SuperTube. LazyTube tends to play most of my test cases, with exceptions.
So, here I am presenting this potential problem (as YouTube will completely more to WebM soon) with WP7 YouTube and Video codec problem. What are you thoughts?
Any Ideas?
PS: To further confirm that 360p videos work and 720p videos do not, I downloaded the videos and uploaded them to my phone directly through Explorer (using the registry hack to make the device appear) and the 360p worked, while the 720p did not.
I've read and heard from my friends reports that there are problems with HD videos on Android devices, too. Whether this is due to WebM or not I don't know.
The whole world must bend over backwards now because Google doesn't like paying. No single SoC supports decoding WebM at this time, so it's not even up to Microsoft. Whether we will see hardware support for this new codec is questionable because it's not at all clear whether it's clean in terms of IP and patents. With open source stuff, the one who implements something is sued, not the one who wrote stuff.
Serriously I dont see the need for Google to push WebM, H.264 is well supported, it's funny that google make a webM plugin for IE9 and MS make a H.264 plugin for chrome

native app on iphone is "missing" a lot of videos, many cant be played on mobile devices anymore. Also the copyrighted stuff or blocked in your country is getting worse. Its time for a good alternative to come up and all just switch away from youtube, unfortunately there is none and its a great service.

I understand why. Its just stupid it has never been like this but as of recently there are a ton of videos being blocked. Even though the rights to broadcast have been always there and now they are just gone. So yeah no wonder people blame youtube if the exact same vids could always be watched trough officials channels then all of a sudden not supported in your country.

Android 2.3.3 cannot add hardware support for a new codec if it's missing in the device SoC. Or can it?
I can't imagine hardware support for WebM appearing overnight unless it's the same thing as MPEG4 Part 10 (which is what MPEG-LA will be happy to sue the hell out of everyone over).

Wow what exactly? Is it true hardware support or software decoding?
It's probably software, but does it matter? Future SoCs may (most likely will) start supporting it in hardware because Google has the means to force feed it down consumers' throats. Once they finish transcoding all the YouTube content and switch to an HTML5 interface by default this can severely limit non-Android devices, especially if you don't want a device with Adobe Flash, since the site will stream WebM to your device.
Unless they keep H.264 versions as well, in which case I don't care.
But I don't like the way they are trying to force feed an inferior media codec down everyone's throats...

I'm not at all sure about it. Judging by how they are treating their own Android customers, the majority of whom aren't using 2.3.whatever with WebM support, they just don't give a damn. It'll be up to OEMs and chip makers. And those guys may get in trouble with WebM because of possible lawsuits, not Google. So it'll most probably end with software decoding as supplied by Google (although even that won't save them because Google doesn't protect their OEMs in patent and other IP issues).
But that's just my guess.

I meant does it matter in the grand scheme of things. Android phone users have gotten so used to poor battery life that most of them don't care. They'll just not use their phone for a couple days to post standby times on a forum and be happy.
What the underlying "what's it matter" meant (quite vaguely, I admit) what... Does it matter if it's software or hardware? Google's point is to promote their own codec by using their YouTube muscle, and they're going to make sure their own Browsers and Mobile platform are there first, which could potentially give consumers a reason to pick an Android phone over a competitor's...
So, does it matter if it's software or hardware if they are still accomplishing their goals (pushing WebM via YouTube down our throats and making sure Android is the first mobile OS to support it)?
Can you give a URL of a video that is not available? I think it's a bug in the software. YouTube is NOT going to encode videos in WebM exclusively. All videos in every resolution should be available in H264 and WebM.
This might change as soon as Adobe release a WebM capable Flash Player (10.4 maybe)...

I can't give you a URL, but as of two days ago, my colleagues with DHD couldn't view a single newly uploaded HD video on YouTube with the built in client.
This may be because of a different problem though, that WebM is at fault is just my guess.

I think he meant they should be, as in "if you check, you should find that they are encoded as both" not that he was stating what policies Google should be using. Whether he is right concerning the availability of both formats, I can't say.
Sent from my SGH-i917 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
I have just confirmed this further with many more recent HD updates (from 25th of April and onwards), as well as a couple of my own videos uploaded.
The 720p and 1080p versions ARE being encoded in WebM, while the rest of the formats are still in their older forms...
Leave it up to google to fragment the hell out of something.......
Here is what Ive noticed with youtube as of late...
"Vevo" videos(music videos by signed artists that are sponsored or something by Vevo) do not show up when searched for on my ipod touch or my girlfriend's iphone<<<< This is stupid and is recent. Maybe because of the no ads thing on ipod's or iphone...I dont really know. They do however work with fastcode's Supertube app which is great. I dont know how long this will last with Supertube but Im hoping it doesnt change. Somehow fastcode is able to write a workaround with their code I guess. Again I dont know. All the while Microsoft is having some sort of issue with getting a proper youtube app out there for some other dumb reason probably to blame on Google. However Microsoft does allow Supertube to break rules by allowing the download feature to keep going. Again this is weird.
Now Youtube is encoding all hd videos in some new format "WebM" which Im certain will further complicate things on the developer side of things. This is just confusing.
Im not saying Google should allow people to just use their service for free or without any restrictions but I do not like the fact that Google sucks everyone in by leaving everything open at the beginning and then closes it up once they establish dominance in the market subsequently leaving people stranded and with no other choices.
In the youtube app i keep getting these annoying ads that show up! There are on the homepage as you browse videos (not the ads that play before a video starts)
The strange thing is that none of these are on the youtube app on my other samsung device and iam using the same account for both! I dont think its anything to do with any other apps i have installed either cause all i have installed so far is whatsapp.
Personalized ads are turned off within the youtube app on both devices
I have seen these ads in my note 7 and 8, also in a LG, I always had thought it to be normal
I know there are several threads and old blog posts from previous years about the same topic but most of the apps are completely outdated and/or no longer working. I used to use Vidmate to download youtube videos but after I switched to Note 10+ for some reason is not working, I just no longer see the download button. I tried uninstalling and installing again, installing older versions, etc. and it's not working. So wanted to see if there is anything better in 2019 but all I can find is very old threads with the same tubemate, instube, snaptube, keepvid, videoder, vidmate, etc. that they all barely work.
What app do you use now to download YouTube videos? Another good alternative is adding ss on the youtube link between the dot and the "y" from youtube, the downloads are fast but very annoying copying each link, typing the ss, moving the cursor, etc.
Is there anything more functional now in 2019? Ideally I would love an app that would let you login and download playlist of several videos like 20 videos at a time. Any suggestions?
In all honesty, Tubemate still works fine... I'm using version 3.2.8...
Never had an issue with it...
A BIG BIG thank you to BrownBoy8872 who suggested Ymusic on reddit, that was EXACTLY what I was looking for:
Can login into my YouTube account
Can download full playlist and select resolution beforehand for all videos
Downloads are extremely fast just downloaded a playlists of 62 videos 720p in no time, everything downloads in seconds while other apps take minutes
Ads, but not adware like vidmate that keeps sending intrusive notifications if you don't force close/greenify it it after use
Excellent clean design, it even has the option to remove ads and support the developer which I just did
This really feels like an Android Pie/Android 10 app while all other apps to download videos feel like 1998 symbian apps lol

yes I am able to download the videos but the app is not a video player you have to selecf the right format while downloading and then I use MX Player Pro to reproduce them
Alright the dev reached out to me. At the top right next to the sleep timer there is a video camera icon. You tap this to enable video. I thought this was for uploading video like it is on the YouTube and vanced apps. I left it grayed out and this is why i didnt see video, even after I downloaded the video only links.
Anyway all sorted out.
