I've been having a a bit of a strange bug with my GN...
When i unlock and open for instance messaging app to look at SMS's...i see the screen dim a lot and come back again. If i open up settings screen dims like an LCD panel with no backlight. If i click back, screen comes back again or if i lock and unlock screen, all is OK.
I've done some fiddling about and it only seems to happen on apps with white backgrounds i.e. messaging, gtalk, gmail etc. If i open dark background apps i.e. phone app, settings or gallery it doesnt happen.
But for all those other apps when i launch them, screen appears to flicker (dim) and come back again...messaging is the only one where it dims completely in settings.
Has anybody else noticed this?
And more wierdness...in the messaging settings menu, if i scroll to the bottom the brightness goes completely and then comes back again, and starts flickering a lot...
maybe i'll try turning off auto brightness and see if it still does it...
I've had a couple of customers come in already saying they always felt like the brightness was on notch to low sometimes or just very dim. Considered it user error, just got my nexus in the mail and after set up brightness just dropped randomly to almost nothing...
soooo guess we'll see
ah well still did it with auto brightness off
wonder if i've got a borked phone or if others do it and they just dont notice...
EDIT: if anybody's interested in seeing it i've just uploaded a vid here
And i know i still have the front screen cover on...havent wanted to take it off yet!
Restored stone to factory settings this morning and i've not installed anything else or changed any settings (other than turning off NFC, wifi and mobile data)...and it still does it.
Think i might have a defective handset then...annoying though, it's only 2 weeks old but the place i got it from states
Phones that are faulty out-of-box as determined by our warehouse can also be returned for an extended period of up to 7 days from date of delivery.

So if i can't get a replacement out of them, what are the odds of samsung replacing it for a new handset?
Hmm pretty sure it's hardware, set desktop picture to something quite bright/white and sure enough when i was scrolling through the 5 homescreens brightness was flickering from one to the next...
What are the odds of getting a replacement handset after 2 weeks? :|
I had this same issue when I got my phone. I had a yakjuwx build in my phone.
Ever since I flashed over to yakju I haven't experienced it.
You may want to check and see what you have.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
Mine is already running yakju from new :/ I might try re-flashing it tonight though just for the hell of it.
Is this not a bit weird that it happens only on bright/wight screens/backgrounds/apps? And that it's suddenly fine when you lock the screen...
If it was a laptop i'd be fitting a new panel to it but then i dont know what amoled's are like (especially combined with a light sensor)
Nope, still does it after a re-flash :/
Got a replacement handset now...
Like my first one, it was one of the early opened and re-sealed with samsung label handsets (and they hadnt put the battery door on properly, fingerprint on the SIM card slot!)
But anyways, waiting for the OTA update on this one
It's obviously running ITL41D and no OTA has come through yet whereas on my first handset it came through pretty much straight away.
Would the fact i've already had the OTA on one handset stop this coming through? :|
Just recently, my Auto Rotate function broke.
I noticed it failing intermittently over the last couple of weeks, but didn't think anything of it, as I thought it was a setting issue.
But then the other day it failed completely.
The camera is stuck in Landscape mode, but the rest of the phone functions in Portrait mode.
I can't change either.
When I started trouble shooting a couple of days ago, I did the following:
- Power cycled the S3. Didn't fix the issue.
- recalibrated Gyro sensor. Still broken.
- Pulled battery for 30 seconds, reinstalled and rebooted phone. Auto Rotate was still broken. I repeated the process, and auto rotate started working again. But only for a couple of minutes, then it broken again.
- Repeated the above process, worked and then broke again.
- I reset my S3 to Factory Default, but Auto Rotate is still broken.
- Auto Rotate completely broken at this point.
I called Sprint, created an eticket, and went to the Sprint store. They checked it out, and verified that Auto Rotate is broken. They are ordering me a replacement S3 Pebble Blue, 32GB device. Hopefully I'll get a new device, and not a refurbed.
I don't know why Auto Rotate broke, but I hope it is not a widespread issue, as I'd hate for it to keep breaking.
Auto Rotate used to be a simple function, but Samsung added a few options to the Auto rotate feature, maybe complicated the way it works, which is prone more to breaking the feature. I don't know.
I just noticed that my Screen Off while on a call is not working. I checked the appropriate setting.
I'm unsure when exactly that function broke, and I don't think it's related to the Auto rotate function, as it's a different sensor.
I used to be able to cover the sensor with my hand, and the screen would shut off, but not anymore.
Anyway, if anyone else is having the above issue(s), it may not be a setting issue, but a hardware failure.
Maybe you turned auto rotate off?

That was one of the first things I made sure of.
Are you running a custom launcher like apex or holo? If so, the launcher settings will override your phone settings. If you have a custom launcher, make sure that auto rotate is enabled in both the launcher and system settings.

As I mentioned, I reset the S3 to Factory Default, and still have the issues.
The Auto Rotate is still broken, as is the Screen Off sensor during calls.
I am running ADW Launcher Ex, but the above doesn't work with either the stock or ADW Launcher.
As for the proximity sensor, make sure that you don't have any apps that use the sensor as a function such as "wave control".

No apps, as my apps are at a minimum since I'm swapping out phones Tuesday.
I didn't even bother to Root this S3 again.
Sounds to me like you just got a defective device. Hopefully the replacement will be good! I have not heard of many problems with this phone at all so I am sure you will be good to go with the next one.
wow! i'm having the exact same issue, guess i'll unroot and swap it... thanks for the post (a year later )

Hey guys,
Just thought I'd ask. Today my n7 seems to be stuck in upside down portrait! Turning rotation in and off doesn't do anything, nor does rebooting. And it won't rotate to landscape. I haven't done a factory reset yet, hoping to avoid it. Just thought I'd ask her first.
There are some root apps that can force rotation ...

I've had this happen today also, in the recent past I had it lock on landscape (with the back camera behind the upper left corner). I had been using a non-standard kernel, and switched back to the stock, but it didn't seem to stop the problem. I read in another thread that there may be some problems with the sensors, perhaps affected by the on-off magnet in a smart case. I don't know that that is a problem, but I did just recently get a new smart polio case and if that's the problem I'll get something else!
Dga, since the last update I haven't bothered rerooting mine. Currently is sick standard.
Mbam, I do use a poetic brand case with magnet.
For the sake of it I might just factory reset and see what happens. Might even reinstall the stock rom, or maybe try L.
Well that was just seriously whack. My new laptop hasn't been connected to my nexus 7, and I thought I should re-root and back it up before I do anything. So I connected it to my laptop, waited until whatever drivers had been installed, then suddenly the n7 screen flipped around to normal, and now all rotation angles seem to be working again!!
I love technology......
I just got the Tab S 8.4 yesterday and I am trying to figure if I am missing something. My screen will not rotate, it will stay in portrait mode all the time, it will not go to landscape mode on anything...youtube, internet, gallery, etc. Yes...the SCREEN ROTATION is on in settings. I have turned it on and off and still nothing. I even went ahead and did a reset. Still nothing.
Am I missing something?
Probably not, just need to return it. Something might be wrong with its hardware or software that will not make the screen rotate.
Is screen rotation highlighted when you pull down the notification panel? If it is download SENSOR BOX FOR ANDROID from play and see if the orientation sensor is working.

Screen Rotation is highlighted when I pull down the notification panel. I will download the app and check it out. I mean, what can I do anyways if it does show that the sensor is working correctly?
Are you using a different launcher?

at least you will know the hardware is working. You could also try SET ORIENTATION from play to see if you can force it.

Set orientation did work. It did change the orientation of the screen from portrait to landscape. But it stood that way, meaning everything was either going to be stuck in portrait mode or landscape.
As for the launcher...its stock touchwiz. I have not tried any other launchers.
What was the result of the sensor test?

im not home with the tablet yet. All those things I did yesterday night. I will try the sensor test first thing when i get home.
Ok, I downloaded app and no good. The gyroscope sensor did not move correctly. The accelerometer sensor showed me the worse. The ball just rolled to the top right corner and stood there. Did not move at all, even when I slam down on any direction. Returning this tablet.
Thanks everyone.

I bought an Open Box for about $90 off from Best Buy, the 10.5 Tab S, and had the same issue with no rotation of screen. I only tested it with other programs that will change orientation for you, and it worked then, but not automatically, only when using the app. I checked all settings, including accessibility, I flushed the cache using the Recovery mode, but no luck. I did get lucky though at Best Buy, as they were awesome and ended up giving me a brand new one in exchange, without any additional charge. There may be some manufacturing defects in the sensors that are causing these issues. Good luck to you too sir.
Ive seen it said that some people, who've had the same problem, gave the tablet a sharp slap on the back to fix it.

My Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 just exhibited the same problem today. A sharp slap to the back of the tablet did fix it...
Thanks.
i know this thread is 1 year old however i purchased a brand new S2 8 inch tablet from canada computers and it too will not rotate the screen on its own. If i use a 3rd party software it has no issues rotating but it stays that way until i rotate it otherwise manually. Brand new less than 1 day old and i already have to warranty it with Samsung disappointed that such a premium tablet having an issue out of the box. Also all sensor software in install all indicate there are no sensors installed.
Edit: ok now everything works great and all sensors work now on Sensor Box. I had to do a hard cache reset of the cache partition using that dos look alike menu at startup.

This confuses me since the Android settings Backup / Restore has "Factory Reset" which I did twice and it didn't work, then I pressed power button, volume up and home button to bring up the other menu on bootup and selected the format cache partition option. This resolved the issue and was happy I didn't loose my data unlike the backup/restore had wiped all my data. Is that still considered a factory reset? I did see the option to factory reset but didn't select it, I opted to try the cache partition instead which I was glad had worked. Saved me from taking my new unit back to be repaired.
theres an app called bubble level (spirit level) i used to re-calibrate my sensor since there isn't a built in way anymore, if the slapping doesn't work or you don't wanna risk it try that.
Hi Guys,
So I got my M9 yesterday and its awesome. The ony problem is that it does not auto rotate.
I have turned auto rotate on and off, no diffrence.
I have done the G-sensor calibration tool in display settings. The top bar does not move (Guess thats the problem one).
I have loaded the phone up in safe mode and done the G-sensor thing. Still not working.
The only time the screen rotates is when a app forces it to rotate. like in a game, camera app, and youtube.
I only noticed this late last night.
I have yet to do a factory reset as I am at work. Once home I will give it a try.
Any one got any ideas?
Sense never rotated whilst sober..
So I have done a factory reset. No change.
Got it at 3 (UK), they said I can do a swap.
Hopefully 2nd device will will rotate...

Not fully true, i think Sense 3.5 had it, but they removed it again after.
Could be 4.5 too, tho i'm not 100% sure, but i remember back with the Sensation that eventually a new Sense came that allowed rotation of Sense itself.
You're talking about Manila yeah? it was modded i.e. not that much sober..
I've got exactly the same issue on a UK SIM-free model. The Motion Launch gestures don't work either.
Did you get the issue sorted?
I got it swapped for a new device which works.
From what I understand the sensor was just broke. Don't know how though. It didn't seem like it was a software problem but more a hardware issue.
3 did the exchange after they had a little play with it. Was a quick swap.
That's good mate, I'm glad Three sorted it out for you.
Hope Amazon can help me out!
What a shame, sham
I have the same problem only I bought a privacy screen from Otterbox. I really dont want to swap for the Auto Rotate and G Sensor problem only to purchase another screen (Which I applied flawlessly). I have the Verizon HTC M9 Brand out of the box I had these issues. Its annoying when playing a game or trying to take a picture for it not to auto adjust the orientation. I've done the factory restore as the HTC rep suggested after I told him this happened out of the box I really feel like these support people don't listen to what the users are saying. Now I'm supposed to go back to my Verizon carrier and swap phones to setup again for the 3rd time... ridiculous!
Sidenote: this phone gets way too hot and the picture quality/stabilization is worse than the M8

I got the same thing my auto rotate work then stop working have re set my phone 3 time and it happening but my bf got same phone but he his don't
This may sound funny..I had the same issue with my new M9. Had it for about 3 weeks then the problem occured. I tried these steps to no avail:
1. Restart
2. remove installed apps
3. Calibrate
4. Calibrate on Safe mode
5. Reset phone to Factory
I was about to call HTC until I saw another dude posted an unusual solution.. I didn't pay attention to him because it was silly but it did fix mine.
During calibration, I noticed that the top sensor is not moving, only the one at the bottom.. WHat I did, While on the calibration page, I dropped my phone about 6 inches to the carpet..did it twice until you see the top sensor also move. Then do the calibration..I have a dot view case so I would prefer u to drop the corner with a protective case on it...
If you have warranty and you have timne, then call warranty support...
Cheers..
