not your device, it's a global thing. google it

Worldwide outage.
Facebook, Instagram And WhatsApp Suffer Worldwide Outage
The services were down for around six hours on Monday, marking one of Facebook's longest outages.
www.huffpost.com

Yes ist ist global, here in Germany all is down. WA, FB and Instagram.

There will be people who will slit their wrists and others who will jump out of building windows.

They're deleting data so they're shut down right now

I deleted all fb, wp and ig accounts six months ago, I'm much better off without! For me they can also close that I would not miss them

[General] How do you people value your own information?

I'm asking this because after the Sony/SOE hacking (which I am somewhat affected by), it's got me thinking.
There are some online services that I've been trying to remove myself form (since before that happened), and companies make it virtually impossible in some cases to get themselves removed from these services.
The biggest example is Facebook. It's literally impossible to remove yourself from facebook. It gives you no decent way to see a list of Pages you have "Liked" and there is no way to remove all of your posts from the site.
Twitter makes this easy... Foursquare makes this easy. Loopt makes this easy...
But it seems companies that are big into Advertising make it as hard as possible for you to decouple yourself form them.
Slacker and Pandora have no such option to remove yourself from those sites after you create your account (and it's impossible to purge your personal information from them unless yo go through hoops and bounds to do so). Contrarily, Last.FM makes it as easy as a button click and some confirmations.
Yahoo! and Google make it easy to delete accounts, but Windows Live basically leaves the account sitting there for something like 4-6 months before it's deleted...
Provided there are decent confirmations, I think any online services should allow any user who willingly signed up for it to willingly walk away from it, and take their personal data and information with them. It seems like a huge power grab by the industry to lock users into them and own our information...
I've already written my Congressman and Senator following an issue with AOL where it took literally weeks of constant phones calls for them to delete my old accounts that I haven't used in forever. Finally they agreed to "waive" the "we don't delete accounts" rule because I was in the military for years following the account creation and they had it on record since I canceled my AOL service that I was doing so because I was being deployed back then...
What do people think. Do you think it's cool that companies expect to own our information after we sign up for their services and make it extremely difficult if not outright impossible to decouple ourselves from them?
Or do you want to be denied a job (or admissions into a university) because you posted something tasteless or inflamatory on facebook one night? (yes, universitiy admissions are starting to check social networks)?
For the past 3 months or so I've been trying to close down all these unneeded services that I have subscribed to in the past, and have been met with several brick walls.
It's even impossible to delete accounts on forums these days, which is uber laughable as well...
I'm thinking about quitting facebook, but getting all my stuff off of there is looking like an impossible task...
EDIT: Pandora finally got around to deleting my account... But I did send them like 5 emails today before they got around to it at 10:50 PM (first contacted them like 2 months ago).
I agree with you that all services you willingly sign up for should be as easy to leave as they were to join, it makes sense.
I'm on Facebook, several tech forums, I use several cloud based services (mail etc.) and I try not to post too many things that would make me look bad.
Facebook has by far been the most problematic to get off, you can deactivate your account but not really remove it.
/J
that's a funny question. It's not ha ha funny but it's funny to jump through those hoops. As far as information shared, on social networking, I know its vitally important to keep professionalism especially in clinical psychology. Personally, if my posts aren't related to tech or anime, I don't post it on social networking. I call a person, I write an angry email or something, but rarely do I kvetch on a social networking platform. Because it's a bad idea...
I mean I have opened a second fb account and surprisingly my first FB is still open. It doesn't bother me because it is "dead" for all intents and purposes. Honestly I just really don't mind it personally, but again that's just me. I'm not the type to post inflammatory material. I guess its different strokes.
However, I do agree, it should be easy to delete your own account. But I have to correct you on yahoo specifically. You can recover the account if its deleted. It's rather easy and I've done it multiple times. I think after a year (for yahoo specifically) then its gone. But otherwise, nope it's still there.
Yahoo! gave me an instant way to delete my account hte last time I did it. It was instant, with no recovery. I checked immediately afterwards when I did it and there was no way to recover the account. Perhaps that is a new development.
Both Yahoo! and Google allow you instant account deletion (or did, IRT the former). Microsoft keeps the accounts for something like 120 days (used to be 45, then 60, etc.) and AOL seemingly keeps them forever because the account I had to go through the run-around to delete hadn't been used for years (almost a decade), but had a ton of personal information on it that I couldn't change because I didn't remember an old secret answer so I couldn't even log in to get it off there (I used to have AOL internet access).
I went back and deleted almost all of my posts on Facebook. It took over 6 hours because you have to personally track down every comment you've made on the site (including those on walls of people no longer on your friend's list). This is intentionally convoluded compared to Twitter, where all of your tweets and retweets are there in a list and it took like 5 minutes to delete them...
As much as I despise Facebook's practice of making accounts hard to delete I've been wondering for a while if it is a result of a fragile database structure they are using. N8ter 's description of having to manually remove comments all over the place makes me wonder if Facebook's database structure has some sort of vulnerability to having data scattered in so many places removed.
Granted, it's prolly more likely they make it difficult because they can.
What do you mean, "you people"?
Nice one
Suppose I.walked right into that

So... let me get this straight,
You signed on to privately owned websites, handed over private information/made incriminating posts (in any capacity)... and now you're complaining about it?
In boardroom meetings in those companies, people like you are punchlines.
Nothing on the internet is private. Let me repeat that; nothing on the internet is private.
Learn it, know it, love it.
I think your missing the point.
Facebook makes it almost impossible for people to leave after they've used the service a lot. You have to track down every comment and wall post and delete them one by one, among other things before they will delete your account.
Blacker flat out refuses to delete accounts even after several emails. They don't consider email private information... ... ...
Other services just make it impossible. Google voice makes it impossible ti remove the service or your phone number. Aol generally flat out refuses to delete accounts. Windows live wants your info to stay there for six months.
Its not about it not being private, its about me not having a choice in whether or not my personal info sits on their server.
Having a ton of extra accounts increases spam email, among other things...
Hope that cleared up my stance a bit...

honestly, I know what you mean. Its very annoying and frustrating. But just take it all as a lesson that these are all private companies. Neither you or I have any right to an expectation of privacy. Its a hard truth to face. My Facebook profile is as dry as a bone. I never post or submit any info I wouldn't be comfortable with the whole world knowing.
Until there is a government-run social networking platform, just understand that.

No. That's only to download your pictures, videos, and stuff like that if you want a hard copy or to put it on another social network/profile.
For example, if you want to put all your facebook stuff on your Windows Live Profile, but they don't exist on your computer/smartphone anymore...
Also, that won't remove the ridiculous amount of manual labor involved in tracking down every comment/wall post and deleting them one by one...
All that information is trivially seen by clicking on "Profile" at the Facebook homepage. It shows all your activity. But you should be able to remove it by clicking on the X. Right now, you have to go to every page, track that comment down (sometimes in a sea of 1k+ comments), and manually delete it. Some of those comment feeds are so damn large, that they can crash some users' browsers or slow them to a crawl.

Mango Data Use (huge)

Have a Samsung Focus and after mango update (NoDo) 50Mb for month was enought to keep update my data (hotmail (updated every 15 min), google (updated every 15 min) and facebook accounts). Also, I use twitter and facebook apps to read news (separately) every day at night. Update my RSS Central channels and eventualy navigate trought marketplace and some internet wabepages. Now with Mango, my phone consumes 50 Mb in a week with the same uses above described. I'm I the only one with this situation? I would appreciate any help with this.
Thanks.
Pd. Sorry for my limited english. I do my best.
I noticed an increase as well. Mango uses about 150MB a month in background data per month for me. 99% of the time i'm on wifi, so my data usage is when the phone is asleep.
thanks for the answer. That sucks. I think i need a postpay contract.
Live Tiles, maybe?! Background agents?
Have you checked?
I'm using 12gb data plan with an app that can check how much I use daily.

No Live tiles, no background agents used. In fact, i just revert to nodo and update to mango without add anything and the phone eats a lot of data.

isn't AT&T app? cause i use my focus outside of US.
You are right about data consumption...in my country data plans are very expensive and I always get unlocked phones with prepaid data packets. With Mango, I spend 60mb in 2-3 days! In NODO, a 60mb data packet could last for almost 8-10 days with the same use/apps.
I have deactivated every automatic sync but the data consumption is still relatively big...even XBOX syncs automatically!! One note sync can't be turned off
MS must understand that their devices can be purchased in many places in the world and AFAIK only in USA there is free wi-fi like the oxygen in the air and data plans/contracts are better deals than an unlocked phone. In other countries we can't live with devices that depend so much on the internet.

I think youre right with this. One Note, Office docs in skydrive and xbox sync at the same time when live account sync. I think we need a sync config in office hub and xbox live hub. I want my mail updated every 15 mins at least, but office docs and xbox live may update 2 times at every day (thats enought for me).
Yup, I understand what u r tryin t say, but Windows Phone is oriented to EU and US, as well as HSDPA countries.
Btw u can turn Xbox sync and Zune sync off if u do not wish to use too much of ur data balance tho.
The diff of Windows Phone, the essence of Windows Phone OS, is mainly rely on cloud computing and synchronization. If u don't use Live Tile, no Twitter push notification, no Facebook intergration chat, no MSN Messenger, no SkyDrive Office document storage, no photo sharing, no Xbox Live, no Zune real-time personal experience, no push Email, no Tellme voice guide, no Bing Maps, a Windows Phone experience is not outstanding at all, the reason Windows Phone is better sometime is largely bcuz there r so many Microsoft Service behind this platform, supporting it.
It's not when u r using Metro UI, u r using Windows Phone. That's wrong.
I noticed this as well. I had Mango beta versions and had my usual data usage. After the official update this month, I checked my data usage and it was much higher than usual, and I haven't really done anything differently. I keep off data when I'm home at wifi and usually just use it for directions and maps when I'm out.
Yep, this happend to me too. I have a 50mb data plan and everything fine with Mango-beta for 30 days. Now with Mango its only 15-18 days
I just deactivate all Xbox Live stuff, I check background workers, telemetry
For the record, I have my primary hotmail account with Push (since nodo, mango-beta, mango)
I have a MobileMe, Gmail, Hotmail and Exchange account set up to sync with my phone plus Xbox Live, a couple of weather apps, a few news live tiles and the Facebook/Twitter/LinkedIn set up and in a week I've consumed 5.09MB so it must be device/firmware specific.
I am using a HD7 on O2 UK.
guys, did you have feedback disabled? if not disable. try to disable also checking of system updates via cellular data it is default enabled.did you try to make hard reset after mango update, it is confirmed that mango after hard reset drain battery less maybe probles with data usage may change. try to disable background apps.
both wife and myself upgraded to Mango and I paid close attention to data usage. The data usage went up maybe 10-15%, which I expected with life tile push when away from WiFi. Nothing outrageous.

Would love to know that as well.
I use my focus outside the US, I see no utility in at&t apps so I erased them. Why should I keep them? my Data usage was about 150Mb/month, with mango i think it is like 180Mb/month, I dont think it is that bad.
i know at this times, everything go/back to internet. Push services, sync services, location services etc..But i think some services need to be more configurable. I dont need twitter, facebook or foursquare updated every 15 mins. That's the razon why i don't configure facebook and twitter accounts and install every app separately. Integration of the services is a good one, but need to be more configurable. In WM 6.x this is possible. Why leave out this feature in WP7 ??

Yes, that change is normal from NoDo to Mango, but not from Mango-Beta to Mango. Must be the same or in fact decreased because some last time changes/fixes
I have already disabled the "use my data connection" to check updates and send feedback

As for me it much easier to pay $10/month more and stop worry about data over usage (but I begun from the 200 Mb/month data plan too)

Two small things that are insanely frustrating

Sorry everyone, gotta rant.
Bing.
Oh Bing, you useless, useless application. No Zehr's in my city? No Service Canada locations?
I don't care that "it only works in US and UK", if your product doesn't work in a certain country, then WHY is it sold there?
It'd be like a blu-ray player that doesn't play DVD's.
No rotation-lock.
This in itself isn't that bad, sometimes the display turns sideways, what IS bad, is trying to get it the way you were using it again. Shaking the phone, twisting it, being patient, nothing works. Once it rotates the way you weren't using it, gooooood luck, cause that thing ain't ever rotating back.
I feel like smashing my phone into a million pieces every time I see if flipping over.
Yes both things that need addressing, and I am expecting Bing to have massive upgrades in Apollo. The rotation lock is a no brainer, and should be there. Hopefully also in Apollo.
I have no issues with rotation on my HD7 whatsoever, when I rotate it rotates without hesitation. It might be a problem with your phone and not the OS itself, and Zehr? Wow that's old school, ain't seen one of those around my area in quite sometime.
sure haven't said:

1st calm down and do a little googling.
Answer for A
http://www.wpcentral.com/activate-scout-bing-vision-mango-canada-others-how-to
Answer for B
What app are you having rotation issues in? rotation always worked in all apps for me with NO issues.
What O/S version? Nodo? Mango? above?
You can also install orientation lock (assuming you can side load and are IU);
http://windowsphonehacker.com/articles/orientation_lock_v3-04-16-12
Not built in but at least an option
Bing works only in certain countries, its like Zune though.
The rotation is good, never had problems with it.
it's funny, just yesterday I was telling a coworker how well the rotate works on my arrive compared to my old tp2 wm 6.5. No issues here.
Bing is great too..... AMERICANS FTW! j/k!
I wish Bing rewards was integrated into the phone, just another selling point Microsoft.... That way when the real deal Skype App/integration comes we can search Bing to earn Skype minutes , simply with our phones..

Lucky for many of us, it seems that IU (interop unlock) isn't necessary for the latest release. YAY!

Oh gods double on the rotation. It's usually completely fine. And keeps how it's meant to be.
But once in a while (usually in IE) it rotates and then takes ages to realise I want it back.
I think it's frustating Facebook messages. It should receive inboxes. I hate need to go to Facebook app to read inbox messages. That sucks so bad..
Never had a problem with quick rotating back on any of my 9 Windows Phones(1 Lumia 900, 3 Radars, 2 Hd7s, 2 HD2's), not on a single one.

I receive when I'm online, yes. But those messages are Facebook chat. Facebook have unified inbox and chat messages, but still, when i'm not online and someone send me a message, I just receive it through the app.

It would be nice if it all were treated the same. I do think it's an FB issue though. I've got friends whose messages come to my phone, and others' who don't. What I've noticed is that Damon is signed into chat, but Jacob is not. Jacob's messages always appear in the app/online but never in my messaging hub. :|

Personal Contacts won't sync with Facebook

for a while my contacts showed pictures from their facebook accounts. i like to only show contacts on my sim in my contacts list, not everyone on fb. though if i select everyone on fb, then all the people from fb show up except the people on my sim. it's very confusing. it seems like after JB the contacts all lost their pictures completely and were no longer sync'd to fb. i've tried uninstalling the app, completely refreshing the sync amongst other things. i can't figure out what's up.
i get around this using haxsync, which works well. it's a paid app though.
also, this belongs in q&a.

Stop storing contacts on your sim. This is most likely part of the problem.

looks like a global problem atm.
Same for me on my m20p, crosshatch and taimen, also girlfriends note8 has the same problem.
TG works most time, but WhatsApp is pita from time to time.
Perhaps it's an issue with FCM, think it starts last month.
