My 4k firestick is attached to my Sony Android TV and I haven't tried using Prime Video on the Firestick for quite some time as I usually watch Prime Video via Android TV on the Sony. When I recently tried Amazon Prime on the Firestick I had audio for about 10 seconds but no video and the the Firestick rebooted. On a second try there was 10 seconds or so of audio and no video and then the firestick froze. There was no response to any button on the controller and I had to physically disconnect power to get it to reboot. I'm on the latest version 6.2.8.1 of the OS.
My firestick is rooted and I've extended the internal memory onto a USB. I have also installed the Launcher Manager and the Wolf launcher.
Oddly, Amazon Prime will play trailers but not the main video ?? Other streaming sources such as the BBC iPlayer work fine.
Has anyone else experienced this or can offer an explanation/fix for this ?
This is discussed in other forum post also,
Just update TZ via twrp.

Flashing rbox's prerooted rom in no was can remove your TWRP.
If you flashed his rom on top of older roms (i.e <8.0) then your efuse should be intact. By judging that you are able to boot your stick means you haven't performed any modifications. Also means you haven't disabled OTA on your stick.
I think you should try to unlock once again, after that disable OTA.

Head over to AFTVnews.com again and look for his guide on fire tv 2.
You probably be best to install TWRP recovery and then the latest pre rooted ROM. Making sure after all steps you wont update it. As soon as your back into the os run the command to block updates.
Another good suggestion is to make a backup (preferably to micros sd card for space reasons) as soon as you can. Then after you have everything setup.
I just updated my fire tv 2 earlier today very simple to do when you have TWRP. The pre rooted roms are linked in his guide also.
The link you have been looking for is not what is used.

Yes you got it right I Finally updated to 5.2.1.0 and added TWRP following this guide http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-root-the-amazon-fire-tv-2 for a while I was scared since the amazon app was saying update in progress I even rebooted several time to prevent it and stop my rooter but everything is fine and I added the "pm disable com.amazon.device.software.ota"
I Just need to install fire starter if it is working with this version
I just updated today from the out-of-box (i think 5.0.1) version that I rooted to the latest images from April 2016 (TWRP as well), and firestarter has been lost for me. I ran a suggested adb line to enable the app (apparently the OS blocks firestarter by name, and has the ability to blacklist/block apps like that without OTA updates). Even though the app showed back up, it's functionality is lost. I've tried firestopper as well, but the FireOS seems to break the homebutton detection, which is why I used the app. Fortunately, I enjoy the new FireOS ability to double-tap home button and see a list of apps, which is where Kodi actually shows up for me, since it won't show in the Recent Apps. Good luck, just wanted to post my anectdote!
So I upgrade my AFTV1 to Fire OS 5 [pre-rooted image from rbox] without issue, but I find it annoying that Firestarter [now appstarter] doesnt launch when pressing the home button and some apps I had working on Fire OS 3 no longer work with Fire OS 5. I'm looking to downgrade back to Fire OS 3, but after flashing one of rbox's older pre-rooted images the system just keeps rebooting back into TWRP.
has anyone seen this issue? am I downgrading my AFTV1 incorrectly? Is it even possible to downgrade after going to Fire OS 5 ?
EDIT: n/m, figured it out. had to reinstall rbox's boot menu for it to work [https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/orig-development/firetv-boot-menu-t2941729]

Bad move.. Although you can easily fix this...
More & more apps won't install or update in FireOS 3. (Example: Kodi v17, Latest FTV YouTube App, etc)
There is still one version of FireOS 5 that allowes a fully functioning FireStarter.
FireOS 5 has better compatibility on VPN's apps & others.
TWRP v7 is a much better recovery then CWM on our FTV1's.
The only thing I am aware FireOS 3 does better then FireOS 5 is ScreenCasting. For now.
So just reinstall TWRP v7 just like before but this time install:
July 4, 2016
5.0.5_r2 (md5sum: 32c869fff5e39a5c0d2f5f48b3a10ef5)
This includes the same 2ndinit as before and TWRP version 3.0.0-7. This version of TWRP has support for 720p and fixes the crashing/looping.

FireOS v5.0.5 (Build 537174420) is fully compatible with FireStarter. You don't even have to use FireStopper on that FW. Just make sure your blocking updates using both method 5 & method 1. (http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-block-software-updates-on-the-amazon-fire-tv-or-fire-tv-stick/#router)

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I found out a lot of those issues the hard way after getting it to work. Ended up restoring my TWRP backup from Fire OS 5. That being said, has anyone gotten the play store to work properly on an AFTV1 with Fire OS 5? I followed the tutorial posted for the AFTV2, but missing a lot of apps from the search and markethelper wasn't working for me.
The only other issue I have is the slingplayer apk I have doesnt work on Fire OS 5, but worked on Fire OS 3.
I haven't been able to try this yet. But follow the FTV2 tutorial + this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/general/gapps-fire-tv-2-5-2-4-0-rooted-t3559803/page3
Kramar111 posted/shared the files for FTV1 on the 2nd page. The AFTV1 is an ARM device. I think this is the most complete approach for Gapps including an AFTV friendly (No mouse needed) AndroidTV PlayStore & everything that it needs to function correctly.
It might seem complicated but it shouldn't be. Since Kramar111 shared the FTV1 files already.
Also some of parts/instructions might need slightly different for the AFTV1 depending on FW version.
I use FTV4k in Poland. Using apk's I installed Amazon Prime Video (for whatever reason built-in APV doesn't work in Poland, but one from Android TV works fine); Netflix, Apple TV... and HBO Go (Nordic).
For the past year all worked extremely well and stable, but about 2 weeks ago HBO stopped to work. When I run it, it starts, there are a few revolutions of the circle, and then it jumps back to the main menu. I uninstalled the app, reinstalled, I was able to activate it just fine, and right after activation it dropped back to main menu.
I'm using newest version available, Google Play services are also installed in the newest version... I'm out of ideas what else could I try.
Anyone would care to help me?
I've the same problem
As I have noted in this post, the latest update for Fire Stick 4K causes the HBO GO app to crash. The only solution is to root and downgrade (or watch via the Kodi HBO GO addon).
Additionally, the same thing happened with Fire Stick 2nd Gen in the latest update.
HBO GO should issue a fix, but they're unlikely to do so because Fire Sticks aren't supported.
Hello
Could you give me hint How I need downgrade my FSTV4K?
I flashed pre-rooted 2.7.1 then during stick registering auto update install 2.7.3
I disabled OTA then again install 2.7.1.
After that install HBO and try. Not working despite downgrade, so this show that in system there some modified files left.
I suggest that I need backup of 2.7.1 with blocked OTA. Unfortnatly dont have it
I had the same issues. First I thought a full wipe of the system partition would be enough (and flashing the "stock" 2.7.1 via TWRP), but ultimately I had to do a factory reset on 2.7.1, block update servers on my router and skip the updates step in the setup wizard.
Apparently, to pass the update check, but prevent the download, you must block three of the four update servers:
Code:
amzdigital-a.akamaihd.net
amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net
updates.amazon.com
If that doesn't get you past the update screen, you can use the Fire Stick remote Android app on a phone, connect to the stick as soon as it's visible on the local network, putting it to sleep via the app and waking it up via the remote. That did it for me.
There are other ways of passing the initial wizard, they involve modifying build.prop to enable ADB and pushing your adb keys, there was a post about it somewhere. To do this, you have to connect the stick directly (no OTG) and do the boot-fastboot.sh step from the rooting instructions.
Here's an old (apparently patched) version of the app intended for Sony Bravia TV's that works on both 2nd gen and 4K. The icon is purple for some reason and there's no shadow box behind the subtitles, but it works.
I see that the link has been posted in the request section, but I'll leave it here just in case.

Hi everyone,
I received a FireTV box from a friend who didn't want it anymore. The model # on the back says DV83YW. I believe this is FireTV 2nd Gen, correct?
Anyways, the FireTV box was working when I received it, but it would not install the YouTube app from the app store. I attempted to do a Firware update but it would not install that either.
After contacting Amazon support they told me to do a factory reset which completed successfully. However, now, after connecting to the internet and selecting language the firmware automatically goes into firmware update and fails. It looks like it fails to even download the update. Then, Amazon support basically told me that the FireTV box is bricked and they can't help further.
Is there any way to flash the latest firmware via the USB port to get it working again?
Thanks in advance for the help!

You can root your FireTV via this, i think
https://www.aftvnews.com/amazon-fire-tv-2-box-running-latest-software-version-has-been-rooted/
After that flash TWRP, from there flash latest prerooted System Images.
If the prerooted images don't have updates blocked, when a system update is available then it will download it f for you which will be in update.bla.bla.bin format, copy that from your data partition to internal storage
This will be your stock rom, you can use TWRP to wipe the system and flash Stock if you want

Thanks for the reply. I'll give this a shot but not sure if it will work. As it stands now, the Fire TV halts at the firmware update error screen after I select the language and connect to a network. I can't get into home screen or settings to enable the ADB Debugging. Hopefully it's already enabled, or is there another way to get into the settings via the remote?
So just as I thought I can't connect to the FireTv through adb since I can't get to the home screen or the settings. Any other ideas?
Also cannot update fire tv 2 sloane

This will not help you but i am in a very similar predicament.
Got Fire TV 2 from friend on 5.2.6.0 which is OLD firmware, and i cannot get it to update. Many factory resets.
Amazon support is COMEPLETELY useless, but i would suggest contacting Amazon and beg them to return it for another.
On this one, although i AM able to access UI screen and use it, i cannot update it, in turn i cannot install Youtube TV - the one with cable tv channels not regular youtube. The primary purpose for me having this.
For anyone with a similar problem in 2022 , the fire tv 2 box aka sloane
had its last update at 5.2.8 I think . don't hold me to that lol.
Basically you aren't going to find that ROM update around after you unlock and flash the
box, its only shared on Amazon as source code and the available roms you would use
to restore are all pre rooted which usually blocks updates .
WHAT you NEED to do is search xda for unlocking and rooting fire tv 2 Sloane .
The process involves opening your box and shorting certain pins while you execute
Linux command and software .
Amazon purposely wants to phase out the usefulness and functionality of the fire tv Sloane , so this leaves users with a problem .
Closest ROM you can probably get to flash in twrp would be 5.2.7.6
For anyone looking to update the ROM beyond that , you would have to contact the
devs for help on a specific method to allow the updates again .
I'm sure there's a way to do it
I'm not a dev though , I just enjoy guiding people to see they find the help they need.
Peace.
Hello,
I have a Fire TV Stick 4K on Fire OS 6.8.2.1. Updates are blocked via debloat tool and the update URLs in my AdGuard.
Since today the Prime Video App refuses to start, it says that it requires an update, error code 8056. This brings me to the general update option that would update the complete OS, which of course is not possible (and not wanted), as it is blocked.
My Prime Video App has version 33.1543-L.
Here in the forums I could just find way older versions of it. But I also did not see someone else with my issue.
Is Amazon blocking Prime Video without a recent OS version or is there a different way to fix that?
I have already deleted the app cache and data and rebooted the device, no change.
I would make sure the three OTA files are still disabled, then undo the URLs you blocked in AdGuard.
That should allow the prime video app to update w/o updating the OS.
Disabling AdGuard while still having the OTA files disabled still leads to an update error (of updating the system software, that is what is written there). Would the fire tv update function really only update apps, without the OS itself?!
I have updated apps without any problems with just the three OTA files disabled, and the OS has not updated either.
So it sounds like something else you disabled is preventing you from updating the app - did you disable any other "files" in the debloater?

Do others have a higher version number of the prime video app? Any idea where I could get that? I just jound a version 27, while I am already on 33. If Amazon raised the minimum required version, I would also expect that there are more people with the same issue, as a lot stayed at the lower version numbers of fire OS.
Update:
I saw that here not only fire os but also the app updates are available:

I downloaded prime video version 39 and could install that via adb link, after that prime video starts again without an error!
So problem solved, hope that this will help others as well (this was the first time I ever experienced this on a fire tv).
I have the same issue, but the problem for me is the version already on the stick is the latest on that github page. (v44.2048)
I also have the gen 3 not 4k stick so not sure if those APK's will work on the gen 3.
--
Turns out the latest version is 47.1102L so the page is now out of date.
I fixed it by going to the amazon website and pushing the app to the stick which worked.
Although thats concerning because if they can push apps with the dns blocked on the router then it also means they can push OS updates.
