Ha's anyone created a method to go from 5.0.4 to 5.0.5 (on AFTV2) while keeping root? I'm on 5.0.4. With updates blocked because I don't want to screw something up or lose all of my progress. Really wish there was a one click solution!
BTW can a mod please change the title to "5.0.4 to 5.0.5 With Root on AFTV2?"
You should install TWRP recovery, then once rbox releases a pre-rooted 5.0.5 image, all you need to do is flash it.

Thanks. I'll do that tomorrow after work. For now, I get to enjoy a messed up Fire TV that auto-updated to 5.0.5
- No root
- Wukong remote messed up
- and worse of all, the damn thing only wants to fill 1/4th my TV space on HDMI but when I use the HDMI to Component adapter, it's perfectly fine... UGH! Tested the port with other devices, they run just fine. It's just this silly Fire TV! I REALLY hate Amazon right now!

Check in the main Amazon section cause I think rbox just updated to 5.0.5 rom/recovery to v4, just noticed it in the prerooted section (5.0.5)
I see that there is a new ROM but I just want to root the stock 5.0.5 I'm really not trying to lose everything I have for a new ROM. Are there not instructions for a simple root of the stock ROM?
EDIT: I'm looking for something similar to this...

but for 5.0.5

The rom isn't like the mobile/tablet roms where the icons/wallpapers/displays are different, it's the same as stock but with root access & a custom TWRP recovery system. If you want something like that why not root on maybe 5.0.4 or 5.0.5 r1 which both comes with a custom recoverys? Here's a link to a video tutorial -

Actually I went ahead and used the tutorial on AFTVnews.com -I figured, what the hell, if I lose everything, it would have been a learning experience . All of my games are still here which is awesome. I do need a way to block updates that doesn't require ADB. For some odd reason, ADB on this PC is a bit fussy and wont pickup on the AFTV now. All of that aside, I'm glad I can finally get back to playing Asphalt 8. I had that game mounted to my USB drive. The only piece of my "Happy with AFTV2" puzzle that's left for me is proper Google Play access and that's mostly so I can activate my "Folder Mount" license and install my Google Play game collection. For now, I'm a happy kitteh! Thanks to everyone that replied. I guess now I know what to do in the event of another accidental update.

Hello,
linux has a "new" gap to get root rights.
android is also affected.
CVE-2016-8655 Linux af_packet.c race condition (local root)
http://seclists.org/oss-sec/2016/q4/607
is it possible to implement this into FireTV2 to get root rights?
I wrote Kingo Support a Mail but they didn't answer yet.
Maybe you have technical know-how for an answer.
thanks
This could be fun to watch...
Root possible on 5.2.1.1 using kingroot
Hi guys.
Just a heads up, tonight I happened to test rootability on my second firetv 2015( that accidentally was allowed an OTA update to 5.2.1.1.)
Checked kingoroot from my PC with an A to A cord, but did not work.
Tried the KingRoot app, success!!!
Have rooted my firetv again with the latest version.
Have pictures of versions but definitely is working.
Flashed the TWRP version 6 using adb and turned off the OTA. Will soon update to non kingrooted version of 5.2.1.1 prerooted by rbox now!!!
Kingroot definitely does not work on 5.2.4.0 yet...

I'm wondering if you are the first or second person to root 5.2.1.1? Congratulations.
The 5.2.4.0 just rolled out 2 days ago for me, and the interface is much better.
Would you mind sharing a brief, detailed, step-by-step on the process you used?

I too would like to know this, maybe I can add it to a guide like this.
Hi, wrote up a longer response but it was deleted before I could post (chrome mobile). Very frustrating.
Short story is used KingRoot not kingoroot.
The KingRoot apk worked to root my 5.2..1.1 firetv2. Ver 551203220.
The version of the KingRoot apk was 4.9.6.
After rooting, used the aftvnews guide to write the TWRP recovery v6 by rbox.
No problems writing the prerooted software afterwards either. Wiped data to get rid of the KingRoot app data and deleted the other junk folders in /sdcard; Tencent, and some other KingRoot/kingoroot folders.
Hope this helps.

You will need a mouse to navigate the app
I tried to do this on my 1st gen. Fire TV that runs on 5.0.5.1 with 4.9.6 but no success. I also tried the latest 5.0.1 of Kingroot but also no success.
Can confirm. This just worked on my 5.2.1.1 Fire TV 2nd Gen.
Edit:
100% Working. Starting from 5.2.1.1, I have installed custom recovery and then upgraded to pre-rooted 5.2.4.0
Basic steps are as follows:
Use the downloader app (or app of your choice) to download the kingroot apk from "https://kingroot.net/download-android-apk/"
The apk/version I received was, "NewKingrootV5.0.1_C165_B375_en_release_2016_12_15_20161215173923_105203.apk"
Run it and follow the on-screen instructions (press the button and wait for it to finish). Nothing to it. You'll need a mouse to navigate the app, however.
Transfer the zip files and custom recovery to /sdcard/ on your fire (you can use adb, usb, ESfileexplorer, whatever).
TWRP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/development/firetv-2-recovery-t3309780
Pre-rooted 5.2.4.0: http://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/development/firetv-2-sloane-prerooted-stock-images-t3309783
Install the recovery via adb
Use TWRP (you'll need a keyboard now... ugh) to install the prerooted rom
Use TWRP advanced wipe and clear your Davlik/Cache/Data/Internal Storage so you'll have a nice clean slate (factory reset) to start from.
Enjoy.
PS: You'll go through initial setup again. Hold down the home button on your remote for way longer than you think to get it to pair.
Is there a way to manually update to 5.2.1.1 without root?
KingRoot for PC just fails (connected through USB).
KingoRoot app also fails.
KingRoot app can only be used emulating upward swipes (through adb), but the "Try to root" button is not working through either adb taps or the FTVs-remote.
adb mouse is also not working.. Any idea how to progress?

will this theoretically work with a first gen firestick running 5.2.1.1 or am i wasting my time?
I've personally been trying to replicate this root, and I've only had KingRoot to get stuck on the loading page. Does not progress past that.
So far it seems like it is for AFTV2 only, not for AFTV1 or fire stick. We will soon find out!!
Thanks for the info t3ch42 and ExaltedVanguard
I too can confirm a successful root using KINGROOT v5.01 on a FireTV 2 running v5.2.1.1. (I got KINGROOT from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/one-click-root-tool-android-2-x-5-0-t3107461). I have since flashed rbox's Sloane pre-rooted v5.2.4.0_r1 following instructions from AFTVnews.com
Everything is running great..... by the way, this FireTV 2 was purchased about a month ago, so if you blocked the most recent update, you should be good to root.... Good Luck!
I have a ftv rooted with version 51.1.4.0, but am unable to update kodi beyond 16.1
All the attempts fail and some have said an OS update is needed to do that upgrade of KODI 17.
I also cannot install SPMC, also fails using abdfire.
any ideas?

SPMC should work. Last I checked it was still mostly based on Kodi v16.1. Install AppStarter & try to install SPMC from there. Or from Downloader thru FireTVGuru.net.
I would recommend you research the upgrade process & once you understand it & have meet all requirements. Make it so.
Right now upgrading from FireOS 3 might be a bit complicated since an update cycle just started today. And there is no PreRooted ROM for the latest yet. You will need to make sure you TWRP block updates using the 5th method if you upgrade to the current PreRooted ROM.

Is it advised to move up to the most current prerooted FireOS 5 when it becomes available? I have a gen1 box on the last prerooted FireOS 3, and a prerooted gen 1 stick. Is holding either of these back on 5.0.5 a good idea? I suspect the new interface updates will include some amount of performance penalty.

The update to FireOS 5 is mostly recommended for App comparability. More & more apps in the PlayStore & Amazon have lollipop as the starting point.
I did learn to live with the no Home button detection for AppStarter. I still use AppStarter 90% of the time. I just keep AppStarter as the only app in recent. So it has just added a couple of presses to what I was use to with FireStarter. But if the HOME button detection is a huge deal for you. You should stay there.
As for the updates. I have not seen any performance hits. The only major problem might be bugs. But the tier rollout of the update usually takes care of that. I tried the new UI on a couple of FTVS2's & they weren't laggy at all. I usually find the latest FW to be as fast or faster of prior onces. But that might be because I prefer to do clean installs when upgrading FW. Specially on an update as big as the one that just started to rollout. The new update includes more stuff but luckily it comes with options to turn some of that stuff off.
We can also always downgrade PreRooted Rom's. So it's fine to take things for a spin. As long as you have a good install of TRWP. There shouldn't be a problem. Other the user error or power outage.
I wouldn't care about the KODI update, but a message from tv addons says streams are more often using the https: for shows and 16.1 doesn't support that.

Yes, but which version are they. So I can give you the right guide link. FTV1 or FTV2 ?
It all starts with the recovery...
(Make sure you install the right version 7 (aka v3.0.0-7) of TWRP depending on your locked or unlocked bootloader on FTV1's)
FTV1: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-install-twrp-custom-recovery-on-a-rooted-fire-tv-1/
FTV2: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-install-twrp-custom-recovery-on-a-rooted-fire-tv-2/

FTVS1: http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-inst...d-an-initial-rom-on-a-rooted-fire-tv-stick-1/
Just make sure you follow the requirements. A good install of TWRP is key.

v2 AFTV's are the only current devices with both a USB & SDCard slot. So easy to tell. As for OS there are only two types. Either Amazon Original ROM or RBox's PreRooted ROM. Both would show same version numbers in System/About info menu.
Since you say they are Rooted. Then u very likely have a PreRooted ROM install. And when using Apps that use root it will ask you for permission the first time that App or option runs. Like in the case of ES File Explorer Root option. If you had already given it permission then you would see a notification letting you know Root access has been activated/granted to ES File Explorer.

Then you have FTV1's like I do. Go thru the requirements check list from the FTV1 TWRP guide I linked above. And make sure you understand what you are doing before updating. I usually keep everything. Files, APK's, Rom's in a USB to flash & install & I verify MD5 hash's to make sure I copied the files correctly. Specially the recovery/TWRP file & PreRooted ROM.

The only method is to connect a keyboard to your FTV1 & choose to boot into recovery at startup. You should see the exact version on the lower left hand side.
If your going to be using a USB drive to flash things. You will need a USB hub to have both the USB Keyboard & USB drive hooked up to the device at the same time.
Those guides are the most complete ones. But they are some what old & also each FTV has it's own history of what has been done to it. So make sure you modify accordingly. I thought about making a post with my notes regarding this updating guide but I thought everybody's starting point is probably to different & I don't want to be responsible for bricking any FTV1's.

There is no guide on how to go back to stock FW on a FTV1 once TWRP is install. This is due to the version of FW & TWRP that the FTV1's where first updated to FireOS 5. That was FW v5.0.5 & TWRP v6. So the TWRP had matured enough to fully block updates.
The only info regarding downgrading can be found in the TWRP thread. Folks that failed @ updating to TWRP correctly where able downgrade back to CWM. I think you also need to downgrade the FW to a PreRooted FireOS 3 too but I could be wrong. Once on CWM you should be able to allow updates since CWM won't block those updates.
Look/search for more info on the few folks that where able to go from TWRP to CWM here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/fire-tv/development/firetv-1-bueller-twrp-recovery-t3383286
Also once your fully on CWM/FireOS 3 you might be able to use this guide to downgrade too:
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-unroot-a-fire-tv-and-switch-back-to-stock-updates-from-amazon/
All of the above is theory for me. Since I've never had to dealt with this. And there are no guides for this specific scenario. So make sure you look thru the TWRP thread to find the folks that actually mention going back to CWM. Although most of them did so just to reflash TWRP.

It worked exactly as your theory described.
you can consider this the official intructions to revert back to stock.
I was able to flash CWM, Rbox boot manager and fireos 3 via TWRP
once I was fully on CWM/FireOS 3 I was able to push the the stock recovery via ADB then the updates downloaded automatically until I got to the latest version.
I also found out If you flash the old firmwares you can only register the device with a code from amazon that they send via email.

Update: This issue has now been confirmed solved for the Hulu, HBO Go, and HBO NOW app update error.
There are 2 ways to remedy the issue:
1. The prefered method is to update to the newest ROM. Rbox has issued an updated version of his ROM 5.2.4.2_r2. You can get a copy at the forum post here 5.2.4.1_r2. This updated version fixes playback errors in the new Hulu app as well as HBO (Go and Now) issues. Be sure to follow normal flashing instructions. Note - 5.2.4.2_r1 will NOT work for the new Hulu app (4.x.x).
2. If, for some reason, you do not want to flash an updated ROM. For the quick and dirty solution, post #12 gives instructions on correcting the problem. Note that this method only reverts to an older version of the app (3.x.x) and will not allow the new Hulu Live TV service functionality or the multiple accounts functionality. The same will need to be done for the HBO apk as well.
Original Post:
I'm surprised I'm the only one so far posting about this, but maybe I'm the only one experiencing problems.
The new HULU app updated automatically for me yesterday and immediately rendered playback impossible. Any show, movie, etc. comes back with a playback failure error code cdn-3-xxxxxxxx where the "x"s at the end change to different alpha numeric characters at any time. Here is what I have tried so far with NO POSITIVE RESULTS (in addition to speaking with HULU customer service support desk). I am on a rooted box using TWRP and rbox's system files (sloane).
Uninstalled and reinstalled app
Restarted AFTV
Unauthorized app via HULU website and re-authorized
Restarted router, cable modem, and AFTV (even a long term restart as requested by HULU tech support)
Updated AFTV software version (originally I was on 5.2.4.0 - then I updated to 5.2.4.2)
Wiped cache (Factory Reset)
As stated above, none of these worked.
HULU support gave me no way to uninstall the app and go back to an older (working) version, so I am currently stuck without a working version of HULU.
Here's what I'm interested in finding out from the community:
Has anyone experienced the same problems I have and then been able to get the app working correctly? If so, what method worked for you?
I can probably find an old version of the app online, however, I need to be able to block or turn off the update somehow... is there a method of turning the app update similar to how we stop the AFTV from updating automatically?
Any assistance would be appreciated. I'd really like the old version of the app back, since the newer version is crap.
This should be an old version of the apk you can try to sideload: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xw9rv2nxet2lchu/com.hulu.plus-FireTV-3.2.a.apk?dl=0
Thanks Sizzle, but I fear without a method of stopping the update I will shortly be left in a similar situation as I currently am in. Would you happen to know how to stop the automatic update of the hulu apk?

FireOS 5 UI in Settings/Applications/Appstore/ you can turn off the "Automatic Updates" for all apps. In the future you will get notifications about Updates. You will be able to ignore them or apply them.
Can you confirm that the apk I provided is the older version? I've already upgraded and everything works fine on my Fire TV 1.
Sizzle - I will have some time this afternoon or early evening to implement the rollback and turn off the updates that Y314K provided instructions to earlier. I will post back with results when complete.
Thank you again for the assist.
Yup... I posted this as an issue on aftv news. If your rooted the new Hulu version will not work on your Amazon Fire TV. Please let us know if this method fixes the problem.

The wife is not happy with Hulu not working and honestly she needs a stock always working AFTV box.
Happy Wife Happy Life! After searching a few different ways I'm unable to find a stock nonrooted 5.2.4.2 zip.
Might anyone know where I can download to flash via TWRP?
I can report same issue, it also effects newer versions of HBO GO
I've got a rooted fully unlocked bootloader FireTV 1 and am using version 4.0.0.342 as reported by Titanium Backup with no problems. What specifically shouldn't I be able to do? My hulu account is ad-free. Perhaps you guys are running an adblocker and do not have an ad-free hulu subscription?
Here's the 4.0.0.342 apk from my Fire TV: https://www.dropbox.com/s/mgvqg1ugzhrjpr5/com.hulu.plus-FireTV-4.0.0.342.apk?dl=0
Here's the old 3.2.a version from my other FireTV: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xw9rv2nxet2lchu/com.hulu.plus-FireTV-3.2.a.apk?dl=0
I am looking into this. If it is what I think, it would only be effecting the Fire TV 2 and has nothing to do with root.

Ok - Here are my findings. I attempted to install the 4.0.xxx version on both of my AFTV2 (sloane) boxes. Neither box would play videos (although the app booted and appeared to run correctly initially). Both are rooted with one running 5.2.4.2 and the other running 5.2.1.1.
After unsuccessful attempts of trying out the v4 app on both boxes, I uninstalled the apk, then rebooted.
Installed 3.2.a and success! Both units work as they should.
Although they are not the newest version of the app, I am able to play back video - so that is a plus
This version will not have the new Hulu Live or the separate account access to the app.
For anyone else experiencing this problem, here is the process I would recommend to solve this:
1. Download earlier version (3.2.a) of Hulu app (see Sizzlechest's link posted earlier)
2. Uninstall current non-working Hulu app.
3. Make sure your app automatic updates are set to OFF by going to Settings>Applications>Appstore>Automatic Updates - OFF
4. Reboot Device (may not be necessary, but what does it hurt?)
5. Connect to device via adb
6. Install Hulu 3.2.a.apk via command "adb install com.hulu.plus-FireTV2-3.2.a.apk" - keep in mind this only works if you did not rename the apk from Sizzlechest when you downloaded it.
7. Profit
You will need to re-logon to the Hulu app.
Thanks for everyone's help on this one! A real community effort.
Looking forward to rbox's discoveries on this subject. Thanks for all of your hard work on this and all of the other projects you've been a part of.

Sorry, forgot to address this Sizzle.
I DO have the add-free version of Hulu, but not the newer Hulu Live subscription. I am not running any adblocker software.
Okay. I have a theory on why both Hulu and HBO are not working. Like I said this is going to be a Fire TV 2 only thing. If someone is willing to try a fix, please PM me. Do note, this might brick the box. I really don't know. And if it bricks, it'll be super dead. But, there is a slim chance the unbrick program could revive it, so I would prefer someone who has a box that was rooted with my preloader instructions and not KingoRoot. But, if you don't care, and you didn't use the preloader instructions, and want to try anyway, there definitely won't be any way to recover it. I will say this again. If you try this fix, there is a chance it might brick the box. Just want to make that clear.
Is there a specific apk version (link) for hbo now that people have had success installing?

Sorry Duck, but I am not aware of the HBO Now app - I use Prime channels for my HBO subscription.
In the case of the Hulu app, I had to revert to the previous whole number version of app in order for it to work - V4.x.x.xxx --> V3.x.xxx
My suggestion is to just try some different versions in a fairly methodical way and see what works. It's fairly easy to install and uninstall via adb and only takes a few min.
Also, be sure to turn off automatic updating in the Appstore (different than updates for system), otherwise your app will just update itself again to the newer version and you'll be stuck.
Hopefully rbox will use his magical powers and get us an answer to all of our troubles soon. :fingers-crossed:
Thanks for the reply @chadster1976. Was able to get things to work by downloading an earlier version of HBO Now from the same place you guys suggested. Thanks again! Was able to watch GOT lastnight again on my main TV.

I'm willing to test as I have spare AFTV devices just in case. Just sent you a PM @rbox
So I downloaded @rbox 5.2.4.2 deleted the SU directory inside the zip as instructed, then wiped everything possible 3x upon which I cleanly reinstalled 5.2.4.2 and Hulu still does not work on my non rooted AFTV 2 Box. Direct TV Now works perfectly without installing HideMyRoot so maybe this is truly just a Hulu issue on AFTV 2 Boxes. @AFTVnews.com

Not sure Tekno. I was on chat 3 separate occasions with the Hulu tech support team and they claimed this had only been a rare occurrence... Take that however you want to... The extent of their assistance was resetting everything - including router, modem, etc. Then the final thing they suggested was a factory reset. I eventually did try that after updating to the latest firmware version from rbox. Needless to say that did not work. They couldn't help me with downgrading to the previous working version of the app, which is why I started this thread here on XDA.
Hi guys. I have a FireTV 4k box. The 2nd gen one.
When I bought it way back upon release a few years ago, I rooted it, used it for a bit, and put it in a box. Just recently I took it back out and started using it again.
Whatever method I used to root it etc is unknown, as it was afew years ago, and I can't find anything similar anywhere online. At the time, downloader wasn't a thing, and you had to adb in and sideload apps.
I am currently on 5.2.6.3
The box won't update at all.
I adb' into the box, and found SU doesn't work. I was able to get temp root via mtk-su and successfully ran the pm unhide com.amazon.device.software.ota and pm enable com.amazon.device.software.ota commands.
The firetv will now at least SEARCH for updates (where it wouldn't before) but doesn't find any to install.
The manage_recovery command to check status won't run. Says manage_recovery not found.
I'm not sure what to do next.
I just want it back to completely stock.
I'm having issues with apps working, but upon restart of the firetv the somehow get transferred to a non-existent sd card and will no longer run.
Netflix in particular.
Can you guys give any guidance here?

I know you wish to go back to stock but perhaps you may wish to use the new and improved root (Magisk or Supersu) and upgrade your box that way.
The Sloane 2nd generation Firetv Box can now be fully unlocked. This will allow you to upgrade your box to a more recent firmware.
A simple step by step guide can be found here :
[UNLOCK][ROOT][TWRP][UNBRICK] FireTV 2 (sloane)
Read this whole guide before starting. This is for the 2nd gen Fire TV (sloane) Current relase: amonet-sloane-v1.1 NOTE: This process does not require you to open your device if you're already rooted or you have TWRP. NOTE: If something goes...

Hope this helps

That is a good idea, and may work. I'll give it a shot and see what happens, thanks!
Hopefully it fixes whatever bug is causing apps to flag as installed on a non-existent SD card and no longer run.
All I'm looking for, really.

Yeah it's just really old firmware tbh so the cert.zip and/or the ota update apks are probably deprecated.

Just have a read through the OP on page one and familiarise yourself. Follow it to the letter and you'll be able to update your box no problem.
If you need any help just ask and someone will be around to help you out if need be.

Is there an advantage of doing this over the pre-rooted rooms flashed in TWRP? I have a rooted fire TV v2 that I have done periodic updates on but it seems like it always has another update to do. Updates are blocked but it pops a message randomly saying there is and update giving 60 seconds to respond or it reboots trying to update. Would this method of root/updates be easier or more up to date?

Definitely unlock Sloane with this new method.
IMO you have FULL control over the box. Also you have more easier management of your root access (Magisk Manager)
OTA can be handled easily either by adb command or use an app such as luckypatcher to disable/enable ota onscreen.
I would recommend this unlock to anyone wanting a more upto date root and fireos.
