Hi,
I am a complete newbie to smart phones and a proud owner of a TP2. I am having trouble using the GPS.
Doesn't the TP2 come with GPS chipset? Do I need to do any configuration before I can use it.
My phone came installed with Google maps and McGuider softwares. When I use McGuider, it says "waiting for a valid signal" and remains in that stage for a while. When I choose "Use GPS" in Googlemaps, it says "Seeking GPS Satellite (0)).
What should I do? Please help me.
It said that for mine when using google maps as well but yesterday I took it in the car and drove around for a bit and it latched on to 11 satellites about 5minutes into the drive. Also go to 'All Programs' and update QuickGPS
Goodluck
this may help with the GPS.

No Luck
I saw in other threads of this forum that GPS might take sometime to connect to the satellite the first time you use it.
So I opened my McGuider program and left it overnight for it to find a valid signal. In the morning I was terribly disappointed to see tat it was still searching for a signal.
I did try the quick GPS option.
I have not installed the hotfix that was mentioned by drgi_sk. Shall try that.
Meanwhile any other suggestions? The program I am using says it is using Com4 with 4800 BD. Is this by default?

Did you leave it in your car? GPS doesn't work well indoors - best if there is a visible line of sight to the satellites.
Fixed
Ok guys..I am really sorry about my ignorance.
Today, I went outside and stood under the sun for a good 5 minutes and it finally connected. Even though I put the phone near my window sill yesterday night, it didnt work.. I guess it is the "visible line of sight to the satellites" that Mesquire mentioned that was the issue.
Once again sorry for wasting your time and thanks for the support..
Hi
I really dont think its your ignorance here that is the problem.
The GPS seems really Buggy.
Sometimes it will connect, othertimes I get the searching for satellites problem.
When using Tomtom in the car out on country roads and I stopped waiting for a signal, after 10mins I gave up, no signal, LOST
Every once and a while it does work and I get 5-10 satellites, so it can work...
I am used to using a BT GPS so I know about how the signal works, so thats not the problem.
I'll give that link a go hopefully it helps I dont want to carry around a BT GPS and my phone, thats half the reason I upgraded...
No problem with mine, obviously indoors it struggles but outside can easily get 9-10. mine has just picked up 4/5 satellites indoors on my desk about 8 ft from a window
Why is it taking so long to find satellites??? I have to wait about 3-5 minutes...
Any ideas on how to make it work faster?????
Never heard about this problem.
my one locks into GPS satellite within 30 sec of turning on the GPS every time.
maybe you need to turn on the use Wi-Fi to locate function from setting>location.
which help to locate itself by using wireless mast triangulation.
might boost the speed of GPS lock.
also get the app called GPS Test from market to see how many satellite your phone picks up.
it gives a detail breakdown of satellite info and number of satellites.
I tried that but I can see no difference.
Is there a programme like the one I used to have in windows mobile diamond2, that connects to internet and speed up the process???? I am talking about the one that needs to be updated every week, but I can't remember the name right now. . .
When i plug my phone into the car charger it cnt find gps
I think it was called QuickGPS?
I had it on my HTC Touch HD too.
I don't think there is such app for Android as the built-in triangulation via mobile network mast does it for you anyway.
You know how it shows your current location weather in the clock. also if you use Google map your location within 500 meters.
Try getting the GPS Test app from market for free to see if the phone is picking up any satellite at all.
if it's a brand new handset might be the chip is faulty. then you should be able to get an exchange as it should be easily demonstrated side by side on a working Desire.
Sorry could not be any more help, not much of an expert myself.
well there are a lot of more knowledge people in this forum some one might be able to help.
I will have a look around at other forum to see if anyone else came up with the same problem.
checked my phone just now and I still get GPS lock in 40 sec inside my house even though it's quite a bit cloudy in London today.
Gps locks in about 20 secs for me, however i always had problems until i factory defaulted since then it has worked perfectly

Hi,
is a-gps really working for you? Very inaccurate. Is it working only with wi-fi on? Is there any ROMs available that have this fixed?
Mine is working like charm... I do have to let it do its magic for 5 seconds though but that is logical
How accurate is it when you are inside of a building? With Google Maps for example...
Pretty good if I'm close to a window!
Otherwise how could it check for satellites?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS
No need to be close window...so I assume that it doesn't work for you either.
Here's my friends findings:
http://kotisivu.dnainternet.net/jorimak/where_demo.htm
I assume that's problem of the network in finland. For me it's like this, in-car I get circle smaller then the car, so it actually points on my body. With wi-fi a-gps it does... the same.
At home with wi-fi only I get circle as big as my home or the village I am in. (smaller then the Nokia N95 circle on your friend's pic). With a-gps I get basically my room.
Or may it be the GPS chip in the phone has less satellites encoded in finland then CZE
GPS receivers rely on line of sight to get a lock on the satellites. So if its cloudy or you're in a building, the chances of getting an accurate lock are less and will take a lot longer. A-gps (assisted-gps) uses the wireless networks (wifi and mobile network) around it to help get a fix faster but with no real GPS lock it won't be accurate which is why you get the GPS circle to he the size of your village or room because that is the most accurate position that the GPS has managed to get via triangulation without a proper GPS lock.

So why there's a huge difference between HTC and Nokia? Same network, same location, just different phone.
Page has been updated with static pictures: http://kotisivu.dnainternet.net/jorimak/where_demo.htm
oh I forgot, have you tried google earth? It does a lot better A-GPS for me
HTC support replied: "Our analysis shows that in certain situations, your phone will not be able to locate exactly the location from your friends. We will consider this function in future HTC phones".
So, the feature is just not there. Wonder how to use for example Footprints inside big mall? Or is this still software related problem and we should ask Goole to fix it...I will ask for HTC if they can tell.
Haven't tried GEarth yet.
try it, it's much more better.
Tried,makes no diffence here

well next time you'll be on vacation somewhere in asia HTC will own nokia, so ;-)
Are there any agps settings on the Desire? On my N96 and N97 I can setup AGPS-Servers. Getting a gps fix on Nokia usually takes me around max. 5 seconds. Using my Desire approx. 5 minutes. Can't believe the difference is that much.
Ok, Symbian is crap compared to Android, but really, gps rules on Symbian...
yeah there must be some settings but I dunno where...
I have owned the first N95 since 2006 and the 8GB I still own. The A-GPS is far superior on the Desire IME. I use it daily during driving, walking, running, with nru and it is just superior on multiple domains. It is the first mobile GPS that has been practically usable for me. However, I don't use Latitude and I think your problem is more with how the A-GPS functions with this app than the A-GPS itself.
I've just tried it indoors where I'm getting 1 bar network reception, HSPDA running, WiFi disabled and from enabling the GPS, it took 17 seconds on GMaps to get a fix on me ~8m outside from where I'm actually sitting. Pretty darn accurate, but obviously antipode to what you're experiencing.

Htc support told that the feature is missing from Android OS,so we should ask Google to add it.
I think there is something like SYSTEM/ETC/GPS.CFG where you can define servers, but that requires rooting I guess.
Not that big issue for me,but my friend is more upset.
Otherwise,gps is great,fast fix etc.

how to use A-GPS on Laptop
Hi all,
In HTC desire built in A-GPS to know your position on maps. I have a situation if I want to use A-GPS on mobile to become positioning system like GPS on my laptop ???? help me, how to use
Ok, so if you go to your settings and go to locations there should be a setting that says use wireless networks (wifi or network access) pretty much assisted GPS right there. Don't get semantic on me here.
In my experience I've had no issues and get a very fast lock, better than my gf's Nokia N97 which can take upto and sometimes over 10 minutes to get a lock and that is with WiFi and network assistance

I am thinking of buying the A100 wifi for car navigation (using Sygic for Hong Kong).
hopefully some of you can answer some questions for me
(1) what GPS chipset is it using? SiRF III?
(2) how is the GPS lock without wifi or any sort of internet assistance?
(3) your impression of using the A100 for car navigation.
(4) Any experience using Sygic? and in Hong Kong if possible.
The GPS chipset is Broadcom BCM4751.
As for the locking performance, I use my A100 for geocaching, outdoors, no WiFi assistance, and it takes one or two minutes to grab 3 or 4 satellites. Much better than my Archos 5!
I also use mine for navigation and I use Sygic, but not in Hong Kong, in the US. It works amazingly well for me. It takes only a minute or so to get lock without wifi and I never drop. I was even in West Virginia within a bunch of mountains and I still had no problem finding a lock.
The GPS works just fine and I would recommend it for navigation.
i'm using Navigon in Germany and GPS works mutch better than my I9000 !
[OT] Anyone has a good car dock for the A100?
I use a universal GPS mount that hooks into my air conditioning vents. I am concerned with the amount of weight that is placed on the plastic vent, but I don't want to deal with a suction cup because of the mark it will leave on the window. People break into cars if they have marks from GPS mounts.
what maps?
thanx
I use Sygic. It works really well for me.
My unit is not able to lock onto any satellite signal. It would give me the "searching for location" message even after leaving it be for 5 mins.
I have all of the fields checked; "Use Wireless Networks", "Use GPS Satellites" and "Use Location for Google Search" but it still doesn't lock. I am using the stock Navigation app that comes with it. Am I doing something wrong?
Download the app called GPS Status.
If your WiFi is on and is location enabled, you should get a lock within a couple of minutes. If not, it may take up to 10 minutes to get your first lock. After that, every lock will come much much faster.
To get a lock faster it helps to hold the tab at 90 dreg to the ground in landscape with the SDcard up. From what I read the antenna is located there. It also needs a clear view of the sky.
Hi there,
I recently bought an acer a100 and today I tried to use the gps but unfortunately NO luck(by no I mean 0-ZERO Sats found! NIL!!!). I have OTA 4.0.3 with ics build.prop from the forum.
I have already tried:
1. Set the ntg to Europe Austria(where I live)
2. Waited 10min for a fix on my window trying to use "clear view to the sky" (4th floor)
3. Updated the A-GPS data with GPS Status app
Please help me?!
P.S. If I put my old SGS I9000 next to the tablet, the Samsung fixes 8 or more Sats within 10sec
Mine is in-dash in my car and it still locks on ....WiFi tether does make it a lot better at least in google navigation
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m using XDA
I even went and installed FlexReaper but still NO luck. There is not even 1 Sat after 25mins....strangely I could not find anyone in Google with the same issue...
I've never timed mine to the minute. i can load up GPS status and wait several minutes before a lock has been achieved. I wad thinking about buying a bluetooth GPS. I can use it on any device and solve my issues..

Hi all,
Some time ago when I got my A70 I discovered that GPS didn't work well. In fact it didn't work at all. Using GPS Test APP the phone was able to find around 30 satellites with good signal but it would not "lock" the position therefore I could not use GPS based apps like navigation or speedometer!
Yesterday I went to another country to just discover that navigation was working perfectly and that was only until at the border, at the border the GPS stopped working again and phone returned to no navigation again!
Now I started wondering if the GPS issue is country (state) related?
Do any of you have GPS problems?
Can you think of any solution in case my suspicion is true?
P.S It is worth to state that weather was all the time clear with no clouds and the country problem is also present on other apps like, Samsung store, play store etc. Where many items are not available for purchase or download!
Are you in Syria?
