I recently picked up a used kindle fire for $5 at a second hand shop. After tinkering with it for a bit, I got it to charge and based on what I've read here it appears to be stuck in the normal boot mode (the second Kindle Fire screen that is dimmer). The computer doesn't fully recognize the device. In that it registers that something is there, but it does not label it as a Kindle and when I try to access that drive, it will not allow me to do so. Based on what I've found so far, it appears that I will need to get a factory cable (on order) and use it along with some other software to bring this thing back to life.
But how do I know which software to use? Is there some way to tell if this is a first or second generation fire by the outward appearance since I am unable to access anything on the device to use that as an identifying feature?
Do you have access to a Linux machine? Soupkit utility is really good, but built specifically for Linux. This is for kf1. I don't think there's a Linux utility for kf2, though.

I do not have a Linux machine. Although I suppose I could repartition my current computer to set up a Linux sector if that is necessary. I will download the Soupkit utility to have on hand in case I do need to go that route and see what I have to do to set up the dual boot on my computer if necessary. Thank you.
Not being a computer expert or someone who does a lot of flashing, based on the directions I've read here on numerous threads, I think fixing this one should not be too difficult, with the right software. My main concern is knowing which version of the kindle I have, so I know what to use on it. I suspect it is a gen 1 because they've been out longer and would be more likely to show up in a second hand store. However, this unit looks almost new, no scratches etc. So I can't discount that someone could have gotten rid of a second generation unit if it malfunctioned.

Left: Kindle Fire 2 * Right: Kindle Fire 1
That's pretty much the only difference as far as I can tell.
It appears I have a Kindle Fire 1 then. Thank you for the assistance
As of now, I'm trying to unbrick my kindle fire 1st generation, but my computer isn't recognizing it as ADB, only as Android, is there anyway to get it recognized as ADB so I can install twrp and flash a rom?

Try updating the driver in driver settings. That was the problem with my PC once. I just updated and ADB was recognized

Nope, but thank you anyway, the problem is that my kindle fire has no os and it's just stuck at the stock boot up screen without any recovery...
You need a Fastboot cable/adapter/etc.
You can make one yourself by soldering 4th contact/the one with the missing spot to the 1st contact (red wire/power wire).
And then you can use whatever to recover.
AND make sure you use Kindle Fire FIRST GENERATION SOFTWARE. OTHERWISE YOU WILL BRICK AGAIN, AND THEN, COMES JTAG.

If you click on the link above, you see that you need to open your box up and that you need to short a special point in the box, showed on a picture. Then there are two scripts you need to run until you reach TWRP recovery. There you can flash a new system and wipe data, factory reset.
Hello
Thanks for reply
I think the debugging is not enabled because when i try to list the device show no device.
Is there any way to force debugging enabled?

Thanks in advance!
Everything is in XDA post you mention.
You need PKG file and follow there...how to flash (TV must be Off, press and hold TV power button...).
You can try to unplug TV from power for 30 min, but I doubt....
I also have a problem and then just restart no display press and hold TV power button.

Is there a way out of this? I would love to be able to factory wipe to stock firmware if at all possible?

Looks like your eMMC is read/only, i.e. faulty.
There are a few reports about something like this, for sloane especially with faulty samsung eMMC chips.
I would sell the box (for parts only).
Thank you, that would be a shame.
However reading through my original post, I failed to mention that this Fire TV had in fact been rooted. I forgot how I did it back then, and as I said, I haven't used it in a really long time.
Do you think, given the new info that this device has previousy been rooted, that it is still is faulty memory?

In case of a rooted box the eMMC may be fine, if something like the GPT or partitions are messed up.
You can always try the unlock/unbrick for sloane.
All you need is an USB a-a cable, a PC running ubuntu, the latest amonet.zip file for sloane and careful hands The last thing is the most important point as you would need to open up the box and short a special point to ground with something soft but conductive like small copper wire (i.e. no steel parts). The point to short is a really small SMD part and if the part gets lost or damaged, the eMMC gets not accessible... The shorting is a bit annoying as you may need about 50 attempts until the unbrick will work (the sloane isn't as easy to short like a firestick, because the box use a power brick and sucks power via usb too).
There is no guarantee at all that this will help you, since a broken eMMC is only fixable with a replacement chip...
but in case it's only a partition problem, a messed up filesystem or something like this you may get the box fixed. Try it.
