Kernel source released - Moto G Stylus (Moto G Pro) Guides, News, & Discuss

So does this mean that we might start seeing some roms built specifically for the g stylus?

I'd like to see both. But it might be a while if the ROM devs are starting on R. I'm pretty sure P and Q started around this time give or take a few weeks

Is it not possible to overclock with an app such as FKM or something like that?

General Kernel Discussion: Linux,AOSP,Samsung

I just wanted to start a discussion about kernels for our phone. Obviously the stock kernel for our phone is the .35 kernel. Before I traded in my EVO I was running the .38 kernel. I know that Linux was releasing new kernels every so often and the developers such as Toast would port them over and make them compatible with the EVO. I thought I read somewhere that Linux was not going to develop new kernels anymore, possibly someone could confirm that. So if thats the case what happens? Will android use the same kernels forever? What would be the possobility of our phones being able to use some of the newer kernel versions? As I write this Bybby323 is getting really close to having a fully functional AOSP kernel for our phones and I think development is really going to pick up. Maybe this will open the door for some different kernel versions for our phones.
All I know is that the Linux kernel isn't going to stop any time soon.
http://www.kernel.org/
Too many operating systems/devices (such as Android) use, or better yet, depend on the Linux kernel. Remember, it's an open source thing - not just one guy behind a desk. Many multi-million dollar companies use Linux for everything, from storing data to government websites and so on, they would be willing to invest if Linux needed money (this probably wouldn't happen, but you get me.)
In regards to ETAs, I have no clue. But just know that support for neither Android, or the Linux kernel isnt stopping anytime soon.

the reason is Android 2.3 shipped with 2.6.35, similarly Android 2.1, 2.2, and 4.0 ship with 2.6.29,2.6.32,3.0 respectively.
I dont see the point in doing all of that work when ICS should ship on the GS2 soon with Linux 3.0
And no, Linux is far from dead

[Q] Kernel sources and custom roms

Guys, i am thinking on getting this phone to replace my nexus 5 but i can see there are not lots of options for custom kernels.
Do we have the source code for the kernel and drivers? I ask this because i had a galaxy s3 once and we never got access to the samsung source codes, and because of that we never got a good hardware acceleration and stuff.
I guess my real question is, do we have good kernels and custom roms for this phone? or are we limited because of lacking source code?
Thanks
You have two kernels at the moment.
Rins for Kitkat and ChuppaChops for Lollipop.
For AOSP roms there is no kernel.
And yes, there is good roms available.

Do you know about kernel sources? Only two kernels is way less than we have for the Nexus 5 for instance.
Looks like there may be some kind of limitation there...

You can find sources here: https://www.lg.com/global/support/opensource/opensourceList?types=ALL&search=d855
You can not compare Nexus 5 with G3. Nexus is one year here while G3 was completely locked until a month ago.
Ah! That is why then!
Do you think its safe to say that now the devs have no limitations for the G3?
I would say yes.
Right now is a pause because we have Lollipop available and devs are moving to Lollipop so it will take some time to get newest ROMs for it.
But there is already great ROMs.

You will start to see more custom kernels as the devs move more towards Lollipop. We are in an odd transitional phase of shifting focus from KitKat to Lollipop, so a lot of work is being done to get this new OS running well. We should see more custom kernels as development continues, but you may not notice as many KitKat kernels as you wanted to see. Hopefully you stick with the G3 and we're glad to have you here in our community!

Lack of development

Coming from the nexus family i thought at least that the best selling devices such as G3 and samsung have a great developer community...but in my surprice i was found with the tinies of all...comparing the two best kernels from my old nexus 5, faux123 and francos with 350.000++ commits to @Tectas and @Skin1980 70+ commits i cant help myself that i have to ask...why is this??G3 is imo the best non nexus device and lacks such a serious lack of development...don't get me wrong we have plenty or at least the most proper aosp roms but we lack extremely on the kernel development...i see some devs are making aosp kernels which is great but why only those??i mean aosp is great but it lacks all the great features we all buy the G3 for....thats the reason i give my great nexus to buy a G3 for the better camera for the IR FM radio and stuff...
Please don't start the all time classic flame make your own if i had the knowlage i could...i also try to take an existing kernel and cherry pick some of faux nexus 5 commits but i wasn't able to troubleshot any of the confilcts...im just asking though...
Thanks for your time and sorry about my english!!

Main reason: We don't have source code.
International has it for a bit now. US dropped couple days ago and Canadian variant should get it this month (hopefully).
That being said, you can probably expect more development to come as source code becomes available.

Yeah but then there will be kernels for ATT version or verison...i was talking about D855 that im using that i think its old but there is the source code for 20A lollipop available...also there are alot of tweaks patches and stuff the devs can get from CAF or like faux did he take patches from 3.10 kernel and backpatch the 3.04 nexus 5 kernel...

It's not like the G3 devs aren't trying. Keep in mind that the Nexus line is fully development friendly, therefore, brings in a lot more devs. And to put it boldly, LG isn't. We have locked bootloaders (Bump workaround) and takes a while before we get the source code.
2nd thing, it's newer than the N5. Lots of devs got the N5 when it came out due to the dev friendly environment and most of them won't change to a G3 a year later. While we don't have insane amount of development, we have some of the great ones and more are coming as we get the source code.

Lets hope they did cause its a shame to see this great phone lacks so much from development!!!

Any Other ROM out there?

I was curious about this question because every single ROM out there for the LG is a cm12 base Lollipop. Lollipop is so boring and getting to a point where what else can it do. I don't mean to diss Lollipop but when I had the Thunderbolt or GS3 there were other roms. Roms from other phones imported to other phones. No matter what name of the rom thats out there now, they're all the same looking rom.
Being a rom junkie and hoping to find a new rom with "WOW" is very difficult. I'm sure I'm not the only person thinking this. I know that the Lollipop for the LG will be out soon and it'll be just a subtle change. I just hope that more dev's will create roms using bits and pieces of other OS to make it interesting.

There are stock based roms like skydragon and cloudy 1.2. I'm running cloudy 1.2 and getting good results.

So... you actually want a pre-themed ROM that slows down while adding no extra value to the phone?
I would think, being a "ROM junkie", you might consider being a "ROM dev-ie" and contribute something like you are seeking.
That's irrelevant to the topic at hand and not everyone at XDA has a background in programming.
On topic: I think there's really only Cloudy and that would be your best bet. Hopefully the T-Mobile variant gets an update an update to Lollipop soon. Anything else is basically just stock with whatever tweaks they claim are in to improve performance. Cloudy actually adds some cool new features.
I always found it weird that the majority of custom ROMs are all AOSP based and never based off of the stock ROM of the phone. Is there a reason for that? Sources not being as open as Google sources? It would be cool if we had a legitimate LG based ROM similar to what CM and other ROM devs do for AOSP.
It would be cool if there was something like Cloudy with features from G3 Tweaksbox baked into it.
Thanks everybody, I wish I can develop a rom but I know it takes time and that I don't have with school and all. But, waiting for the LG update is taking a long time. I know that there's some bugs that need to be handled so hopefully in the first quarter it'll be released. There was the MIUI that was different from other roms but they or the developer has stopped working on it. If hardcore work was done on it and kept it updated then that would have been my everyday rom, but I use either "Blisspop" or "Euphoria" they are pretty great and is always updating for perfection. Never tried Cloudy will give it a try. Thanks.
I had horrible experience with Euphoria. Rapid Battery drain and also phone heating up. Restored to stock but I miss my One Plus One Cyanogenmod 11s!

Lineage for this device?

As the title states. Now that we have root and an unlocked bootloader do you think lineage is will make its way to this device?
Not a fan of lineage code.
We need a aosp rom like Purefusion.
We need Kernel source from Motorola first. They are dragging their feet like always. Without kernel source, we can't get a 100% working TWRP for custom roms to flash
Agreed. We need them to drop source code like they said they would.

Looks like I may be getting this phone instead of the Note 8. Come on Motorola......release that source code.
They aren't going to acknowledge you here. Follow this link and sign up to let them know how you feel.

Kernel source was given by Motorola. There is my git with the edits for a regular machine running GCC 4.9 to build a kernel that boots and works.
How much less is less?
If you build it they will come.... ("Field of Dreams" movie line) Seriously, though, I do wonder if giving up stability and features is worth it for minimal gains in performance/benchmarks? Motorola's take on Android is already bare-bones compared to Samsung! With Lineage, it's slightly easier to theme, true, but Substratum suffices for many individuals on stock. I haven't tried Substratum yet, because I don't like dark themes. Don't get me wrong, I want Lineage to succeed! The more open-source options the better! But, is it worth it for the principle, or modest increase in speed (maybe)? Bugless and not losing any features, I would run Lineage; so, we'll see, because it will come in due time.

Totally correct. Our device is so close to stock it's ridiculous. We pretty much have a pixel phone with slower updates and mods. Which I'll take over the boringness of a pixel. Yes substratum would be pretty cool but I know things are coming we have a kernel being updated to the latest kernel version available. We're testing twrp right now and have it 95% working and now we have twrp and magisk and an updated kernel all going at once things are coming along slowly but I feel they will pick up soon

Yes, they were released. Kernel builds fine. For AOSP stuff we need vendor files. We are piecing things together. All builds have failed so we haven't even had a chance to see if it boots.
Why hasn't a kernel been fully released? (Besides the upstreamed one in the custom ROM section) because of encryption not working right in TWRP, you'd lose root when flashing as TWRP can't put the ramdisk back correctly hence no root.
Somebody should start Lineage. I would do it if I had enough experience but I don't yet. Huge tasks like LTE not working, etc., can arise depending upon the particular phone....
The attached screenshot illustrates the dynamics quite well. I was initially mildly surprised by the Lineage developer's response to someone, "When you start paying me." But, for some developers who devote lots of their time to Lineage, I suppose the questions can become tiresome. Every developer is different, of course, and it is a global scale endeavor.
