Hi guys & gals,
So I've got an A50 (SM-A505W) that ended up with a disabled screen, likely due to water damage. That means I can't use the device and not only that but I'm unable to enable MTP, USB debug etc but need to access the local storage to get the data off the device.
Sadly cloud sync wasn't setup and so I can't recover using that as a method. I was wondering if anyone knew a way to access the device's storage through my PC (I've got both Linux and Windows). - Thanks

Hi Forum members,
I have a HTC One X with JB. Since the latest Synch Manager (SM) I am not able to synch anything other than Phone Storage. This is because SM doesn't see anything else. At the same time in Explorer I have a folder Internal Storage. This is the folder I also want to synch (partly). So now I can't synch music and pictures, because they are on the Internal Storage.
Anybody has any ideas how to resolve this?
Furthermore before JB I could choose what to do when I connected to my PC: only charge; use as HD; synchronize; tethering and another option. Now I don't have that possibility and tapping "USB connected" on the 'drop down' list only gives the option to change settings for tethering.
Ones again: anybody has any ideas how to resolve this?
Greetings,
Zooi
Did you update SM to the latest version ?
Yes, I have version 1.1.65.0 and the program tells me I have the latest version.
Uninstall and reinstall maybe ? Or you could mount the device in Recovery Mode so it appears as USB Mass Storage instead of MTP
After uninstalling I downloaded the latest version from the HTC website. This appeared a new version: 1.1.66.0!
Now the SM not even detects the phone :crying:, let alone finds the Phone storage or the Internal storage. So nothing is synched and I still cannot change the mode on my phone from "Charge only" (I think, for I can't see in what way the phone is connected to the PC) to "Synchronize".
I also switched the phone off and back on again, but it changed nothing.
In "My Computer" I can see the phone, but only the Internal Storage. Where is the Phone Storage?
So I'm still not able to synch the phone in the SM program. Suggestions anybody?

No idea on your first question, but the above behaviour is normal. In Android 4.1 (and above) MTP is used to connect to the device rather than mounting it as USB storage. The only way to connect it as a mounted USB storage device is to do it in recovery (as someone already suggested).
But the recovery mode can only be accessed through a rooted device? Mine isn't rooted.

Yes, sorry. Assumed since you were posting on here you'd be rooted.
Anyway, try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34660458
Still uses MTP but reading the thread it sounds like it'll let you access internal storage. I've not tried it since I'm not on Windows anyway, but might be worth a shot.
Same here sync manager does not work on mine. However, windows media player work fine.
I just install the sync manager for the driver.

Thank you all so far for trying to help. Nothing worked, so I still can't access the phone storage and SM doesn't synch other files than music and pictures.I guess I have to manually copy files from internal storage to my PC.

Internet pass through don't work
Internet pass through don't work !
I can sync music between my PC with HOX, but no internet pass through via usb cable!
I have v. 1.1.66.0 Sync manger installed on my PC!
Any solution? Thanks!
How do I connect my Sony Xperia Z1 compact to a mac? Back in my android days an Android phone could be simply used like an USB flash drive. You plug it in no matter what system and it will get recognized. I know you could toggle between USB mode and some other fancy mode. Now each time I connect my Xperia to my Mac I get „connected to PC- MTP Media Transfer Mode“ (shouldn’t it be MTM- I suppose the P might stand for protocol…never mind) but the phone won’t show up on the Mac under storage. I’ve already enabled USB Debugging under Developer Options because I assumed that would do the trick - nope.
So how can I use my android phone like a normal USB flash drive? I do NOT want to install Sony’s silly itunes rip off software.

Settings > XPERIA connectivity > USB connectivity > Change USB connection mode to Mass Storage Mode.
Works on my mac and also on Linux.

That's what I've been looking for BUT
"Only SD Card supported in mass storage mode. Internal storage not available in this mode. Continue?"
WHY????! This renders it pointless since I don't have any SD Card. Is this a Sony thing only or do all Android phones roll like this nowadys? Also I still don't understand WHY i can not access the internal storage? Why does everything have to be so complicated. Isn't there some hack or something to still access it?
So yeh I've set it to Mass Storage, connected it to my MAC and of course nothing shows up. Sigh. This simply isn't any fun at all.

Yeah - the hack is to hack that Mac into little pieces with an axe. LOL. Just kidding. I wonder if newer versions of OSX can recognize MTP? If so, are you able to update your Mac? Or, if you cannot... how about using bootcamp (or whatever the latest method is), install WinXP/7 or something on the mac and you will have the choice to boot into either windows or OSX whenever you turn it on.

Ah I'm sorry mate, I can't really think of a solution apart from giving Sony Bridge for Mac a go. You can drag and drop into internal storage. You don't need to import or sync media.
Dual booting with Windows is an option (the windows program is way better than the mac program) You can virtualise (VMbox is free) or just dual boot. Again it's a pretty drastic step to take in order to do something as simple as access internal storage! I personally have Arch Linux and OS X.
The Sony Bridge for mac has improved a lot. You don't need to do any syncing or anything, you can just drag and drop as if it is mounted like an external disk.
While updating to lollipop i accidentally relocked and unlocked the bootloader resulting in a full memory wipe but i had my college work on there so i really need to recover the data lost but upon connecting the phone to the pc it appears as "portable device" which is not detected by recovery tools as well as the android apps as the undeleter root couldn't recover the data i need so is there a way to
1- connect htc one m8 to the pc as usb storage (aka removable disk)
2- another way to recover files
Thanks in advance
The issue is that Android now mounts internal storage by MTP, as opposed to the old Mass USB storage format. So computer's can no longer read the memory like its a USB drive. I think at some point (probably not even for this phone) I saw a method to dump the files in order to perform a file recovery, but it was pretty complicated and looked like a PITA.
You can try some apps on the Play Store that claim to recover files (using the phone itself, not a computer). But I've never used any, can't vouch for them, and don't know if they really work. Also keep in mind, the more you use the phone, the higher the likelihood that the files you want will be overwritten by other data.
Good luck. But in the future you have to remember to backup important personal data before making any major changes or mods to the device. I never fail to be disappointed at how many folks never bother to backup their important data; than freak out about it once its lost. Most of the time, at that point its too late. You should have been backing it up all along. If its important to you, back it up.
Well sir thank ypu for your help i don't think ill be able not to use the phone all that long as well as im now facing that the wifi wont open which is really annoying
Hi everyone,
I've encrypted my HTC One M8 and I thought this would mean that plugging the phone in via USB would require a screen unlock. However I've just plugged my phone in to empty the internal storage and I can access all my photos/screenshots/camera data straight away..
I wanted to encrypt my phone to prevent a thief being able to see all of my photos in the event of a loss/theft. Why is this happening and is there any way to achieve this? Encryption seems pretty pointless if I can just see everything anyway..
Cheers guys.
My mistake, I realised I changed the screen lock settings so the device was unlocked when copying. Encryption works as expected.
Please can a mod delete at their soonest convenience, thanks!
I have an LG G3 D851 and I recently dropped and cracked my screen and damaged the touch panel. The touch response is non-existent. I don't plan to repair it but I need to extract the contents of the built-in storage. I already removed my micro sd card and of course the contents are safe. Here's my problem: I don't have USB debugging enabled, as I haven't needed it. The USB connection when hooked to my computer is set to charge and not mtp or ptp. I can't change this therefore my computer doesn't recognize the phone as a mass storage device. I have tried a browser add-on called Vysor to no avail. I have downloaded the necessary ADB drivers for my PC, I have downloaded LG's drivers, I have even installed Android Studio and the SDK. I read that a USB OTG adapter would solve my issue but I don't really want to go that route unless I absolutely have to. What I am asking is if any of you kind people know of a possible alternative solution. Thank you in advance.
Update: I tried an OTG adapter and it did nothing.
