Phone locks while I'm using it - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

Hello.
This is utterly the most annoying thing I've ever experienced. I'm using the phone, scrolling, typing, and all of the sudden it shows lock screen, it happens even if my finger touching the screen!

Smart Lock is enabled for several BT devices, but none are connected, trusted place is set and I'm currently in it.
Any ideas what could cause this?
Thank you.

Trusted place doesn't always work 100%... try expanding the trusted area or make additional ones. I have 2 for my home that slightly overlap each other.
To troubleshoot if possible see if the issue happens when trusted place is not enabled but trusted Bluetooth devices is enabled and a trusted device is connected.

My understanding smart lock should automatically unlock the device, not lock it up....

That's not how it works exactly.
As for this particular function of Smart Lock (it's also used for remembering passwords for apps/websites) will keep the device unlocked when it is in a "trusted location", and/or connected to a "trusted device" and/or when it is inside your pocket... In other words (for clarity's sake) if it's within a user-defined radius of a physical location like a home or business, when it is connected to a Bluetooth device (i.e. like a pair of headphones you use for walking or at the gym or inside your car with a bluetooth radio) or when it is inside your pocket.
Now while Smart Lock will keep the phone unlocked in a trusted location (or while connected to a trusted device, or in pocket) it will automatically lock the phone after 4 hours of being idle.
I have noticed on multiple brands of phones that smart lock is not without it's quirks. The "trusted place" setting relies on the ability to determine your location to be within what you have set as the trusted place. Since all GPS device are infallible, on occasion your phone may detect your location to be outside of the trusted location your actually at. This is why I suggest setting more then one trusted place for a location or else, as this has worked for me in the past without issue.
Personally I do not use Smart Lock with trusted place because of it's quirks... It is easier for me to just unlock the phone with my fingerprint.

I really wish Google would add an unlock when connected to a certain WiFi as I find that works the best.

I would hope not... Sure it might work, but it's not very secure and incredibly risky.
It's extremely easy for someone to create a WiFi access point and use the same SSID in order to collect user data.

I've disabled trusted place, it still does this. But I might have found the bastard that screwing with smart lock - powerwatch2. I removed it from smart lock, so far so good.

I was thinking of locking it to the WiFi router MAC address not the SSID which would made it reasonably secure at least for my purposes. To your point someone could always spoof the MAC address if determined enough so not high security.

You can create a Bixby routine for this.
If: connected to wi-fi network <blah>
Then: unlock phone

Vote to get Wifi staying live on device sleep

Windows Phone 7 and also mango will drop wifi on device sleep/screen lock, making receiving emails and other notification impossible unless you have data.
There are people who dont like to use their data services at home, and would love to have an option to keep wifi alive at screen lock, so please vote for this feature:
Vote here for Microsoft to add this feature
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1251336
it's like reading my thread again
you are not alone having this issue, its not smart thinking by MS. We need to voice our issues on their site.
I completely agree. It's borderline retarded if MS expects everyone to have a data plan.
Most people do have a data plan, especially here in the US. The issue is the battery, a lot of people will complain if it stays on consistently and kills the battery. But, I do agree there needs to be an option, which is off by default, to enable this. I also think they need to make it stay on while it's actively downloading something, whether it be an app or a website, not start on WiFi and then dip to 3G when the screen is off.
I don't think that's completely true ...
I have a feeling that the WiFi isn't off 100% of the time when the screen is locked, because there are sometimes that I unlock the screen (after a long time from locking it) and I find out that it's already connected to WiFi !
So I'm guessing that it enables WiFi during sleep at certain intervals to synchronize with the cloud (e-mail, notifications, ... etc), if that's the case, then it's not a stupid decision after all

I have to agree here. The reason for the auto-off is for battery saving. I don't notice much difference in battery life myself with WiFi on or off because my screen is almost always off unless I get some sort of a notification or need to look something up. I also agree, that it would be nice to add an option that is defaulted to the current set-up, but when turned on, makes WiFi stay on permanently. Although, I wouldn't expect much battery life with that turned on.
This is great idea, but I would like to ask every1 to vote on everything you think that should be on WP7 (always use 3 votes). It just takes 5mins and helps a lot.

I'm sure everyone has a data plan. I'm also sure none of those people are stupid enough to waste it when there's a perfectly good and faster WiFi connection at home. Would you rather use your WiFi @ home connection or a data plan when you're at home?
wifi will be kept alive if plugged in a wall socket, this is because if you have setup wireless sync then phone will syc with zune wirelessly when connected to wall socket.
However, the reason for this vote is to voice our opinion for choice...a choice in shape of a simple toggle under settings where we users like us who'd like to use wifi than data at home to keep wifi alive at all times under screen lock....
I've mentioned this before that 3G chip use far more battery power than wifi, so keeping wifi alive at home shouldnt be a BIG hit on battery.
MS can by default have the same setup as is....but users should have an option to toggle this on/off.
iPhone has shown that simple = better. Too many options and choices just confuses the user.
I think the best solution is not an option in the settings to keep it turned on, but to enable it when it's needed, eg,
- Keep it on constantly for push email/applications with push support
- Enable it every 30 minutes (or whenever) for tile updates, email downloading
- Wait until current downloads are finished before turning off WiFi!

I understand the reasoning of what you guys say but now we have another toggle to switch lets not vote WP into being Android with toggles all over the damn place. If you want continuous WiFi its simple plug your phone in then it will stay on even if locked that is a much better solution so when you unplug or are ready to go out the door you know that you have a full battery when you leave.

Thats just ridiculous, its a mobile phone not stationary phone. Whats so bad about toggles, i mean MS is treating you like a imbecil or a retard.

Why would I want to use WiFi when my phone is asleep? It's not like I'm downloading gigs of data for the tiles. The phone synchronizes only Mail, Push Services, Notifications and a few more things. All in all just a few kb. I don't want my phone to use the battery intensive WiFi connection for these tiny downloads.

Why not? Some people just like it that way, or having a choice is a bad thing on WP 7? They can leave it off by default, and for people that can think with their brain, thay can put something like this, so people can CHOOSE what they want.

Stock Sprint Optimus G. Updated to latest ZV9 firmware. Performance tweeks and new kernals are great and all, but the core functionality of the phone is still broken. The exchange email is inexcusable. A smartphone is designed as a personal assistant and organizer first before media or anything else.
The Bluetooth issue is embarrassing. I am using LG Tone+ 730's which shouldn't have any issue from the same manufacturer. My Jeep uses a base Uconnect 130s/RES system that is in numerous Chrysler vehicles and doesn't have the same issues with other devices like the Galaxy S3 or EVO LTE that I have previously used.
I know the dev community can't wave their hands and make it work, especially on a not rooted phone. But anyone have a clue how to push this up to LG outside of their awful support site?
Bump, recently moved thread.
What Bluetooth issue do you have and I don't use exchange so I wouldn't know anything about that issue
You bump your own 2 week old thread for issues that people apparently don't have. I know I sure don't. Of course I don't use Exchange and my bluetooth works fine

ZV9 fixed my Exchange issue, although it was not a connectivity issue. Are you sure your credentials are correct? SSL vs non-SSL? Tried on mobile network instead of wifi?
I use the same LG Tone and have 0 issues. And know customers that use exchange and have no issues. Are you sure its not the credentials?

RE: Bluetooth, I believe the OP is referring to the fact that this phone will randomly disconnect from a connected bluetooth device. I have two devices I regularly connect to, my car and my home phone system. The phone connects and remains connected to my car. However, it WILL disconnect from the home phone either randomly, or as soon as I try using the home phone to make or receive a linked call. The second image in the OP's post shows the message that comes up on the phone. It can't entirely be the fault of the connected home phone system because I used to connect my Optimus S to the system perfectly every time and never ever dropped a connection. The OG drops the connection to the home system without fail every single time. If I recall, it sometimes worked on ZV7 but never on 8 or 9.

Thank you, THIS.
Instead of shook's dumb response. My screen caps aren't random. And I'm not the only person having these issues. There are actually numerous mixed threads floating around the general forum or elsewhere. I repeat, the core functionality of this phone is not stable.
I exchanged my phone and started getting the issue shown in screen shots by OP. Spent all week trying to resolve the problem just to find out that my work exchange server had updated security and only allowed ten devices to be connected. It did not remove my old devices from the list and so I had maxed my limit. The old device remove process is in the outlook web client only under web mobile options. MS Outlook did not give me any similar options.
Anyways, the point I am trying to make is it may be related to your exchange server. Have you looked into that?

[Q] Why my GPS cannot lock (with many satellites seen)

Hi, recently I found the GPS on my Galaxy Nexus refuse to lock properly.
I used maps for years, and the locating seems good enough (it seems that these locations are from wifi or other source now).
Recently I installed an app to track my route, which really needs true GPS, and the problem began.
Every morning, when I go from my home to work, the GPS just not work at all (no lock). Sometimes it works when I leave home, but minutes later, it lost lock and never gets back during the whole route (even after I reboot the phone and clear the AGPS data with GPS Test). After I got to the workplace, and tried again, the GPS is still not working.
What's surprising me is the GPS works fine when I leave from my work pace and head to my home in the afternoon. It locks fast and works well all the way. (This is the same route in the morning)
The same problem happens for several days (bad in the morning, good in the afternoon).
With GPS Test (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest), I notice the phone really gets a lot of satellites(>9) with good signals, but somehow none of them are used to calculate my location (they are all grey in GPS Test's satellite view).
Does anyone have any idea what's the problem and how to fix it?
The phone is stock android 4.3 unrooted.
Thanks.
The attached file is the screenshot of GPS Test this morning.

PS. the gps works great at noon, have no idea why it refuse to work every morning.
I have a similar problem, when I leave work from a particular exit my gps doesn't find anything for quite a while, where as if I leave from another it gets it straight away.
The only thing I can think of is there are lots of buildings and roofs around that first exit, where as the second one is straight into a carpark. Maybe there is too much interference when you leave home, but not work?

The thing is when I leave home at night, the GPS works well, but not in the morning. On the other hand, when I arrival at work, the GPS still not working, but it works at noon.
I try to figure if the timing is the problem. For example, if much more interference in the morning or the satellites decide not to communicate with me at that time?
As you can see in my attachment, it actually found a lot of satellites, but no data received from any of them. Don't know why, and never noticed before.

Great idea, I never would have thought of that on my own! I normally use FasterFix from the Play Store to set the GPS server to US. After the first day, locks were very slow and inacurate, and by the second day, I stopped getting locks altogether. I tried flashing back to stock, still didnt work. Then i came across your post, and after setting it to Oceania, I got a lock in under 10 seconds. Many thanks!

Hello stranger,
I signed up to this forum just to reply to your post. I recently installed Paranoid Android 4.4 (final build) on my Gnex and GPS was not working at all (would show 0/0 satellites, sometimes 1 or 2, but NEVER lock). Where as previously on PA-3.99 it was fine. After scouring the internet for the last two days and trying anything that didn't involve me wiping, reflashing, etc. your post single handedly saved me from doing any of the extreme measures. I just went to download faster fix, but then stumbled upon fasterGPS. This app, using lovely root access (yay root!), allowed me to set my NTP to North America and then Canada. Now my GPS works perfectly! Thank you again so much!

Question Automatic mobile data and wifi being turned off after a period of interval of device being inactive

Hi, every time I leave my device idle for approximately 30 or more minutes (couldn't determine an exact data on the timing) from the purchase date, my phone automatically turns off its wifi and mobile data! And as soon as you turn on its screen via unlocking or just the lock screen via the button, it starts the mobile data instantly and also the wifi (and bluetooth) is enabled and it starts searching for signals. Now I have been trying to search for this problem for a long time and the customer service too via email dosent know what to do and want me to send the device to their factory for further inspection, so I thought to ask here before doing the same. The problem it causes is that I'm a foreign student and need access to the internet 24hrs so as to recieve calls from my friends and family and hence it creates problems doing so since the network is disabled!
Could you maybe help me a bit please?

Sorry and thank you but it's already on "NEVER"
OK try this goto the same settings page
Look in app battery saver section click the three dots in the top right hand corner and select show system apps and then look for network or Wi-Fi and make sure that it is not blocked from background activity make sure that it has no restrictions.
If that doesn't work maybe try this
"to fix the Wi-Fi you can enable personal mobile hotspot and set it up if it's not already setup with a good strong WIFI password. Once you enable the personal hotspot you will see the Wi-Fi magically start working and now you can disable the hotspot, Wi-Fi stays connected."

I have already set-up wifi hotspot and things but the thing is when the device is not being used for a while then it disconnects all network connections i.e. wifi, mobile data and also the bluetooth Until unless the screen is turned on again!
OK download from Play Store "hidden settings for miui" by yunus
Open manage applications go to the bottom of the screen and select show system apps.
Then look for com.miui.Wi-fi entries there are a few click on each entry select battery make sure that none of them are restricted.
also look in the list for anything else you think might be relevant and check if that is restricted or not and un restrict the battery.
if that doesn't do it then you will need to do a factory reset

Make sure that your phone is not in battery saving mode.
Make sure that it is not your source of Wi-Fi that is the problem I'm not sure how that could be the case but you never know.
if it is not your only option is to to factory reset your phone.
1.My phone's never in battery saving mode
2.the wifi isn't the problem, all other devices stay connected as normal just this one dosent.
3. I have done the factory reset near about 5 times till date.
4. The problem is not only with wifi. It's with all connectivity options, the wifi, the mobile data and also the bluetooth

Black screen with working touch, data recovery

Hi, few weeks ago my mom dropped her phone (samsung galaxy a50) and the screen turned black. I need a way to enter and recover the data.
The touch is working, the phone makes sound (when i plug in the charging cable for exemple).
- The phone has as its screen lock the pattern code (that i know), so I trivially tried to insert it blindly, even though I couldn't see what I was doing.
- I tried to log into "find my samsung", that has several option as "Unlock the phone", but it cannot be unlocked, it gives me few errors.
- I tried then with an HDMI adapter connected to phone and an external monitor, but i can't see anything on the monitor (I think for security reasons the screen is not shown if it is locked).
Since I know the password, I wonder if there is a way to brutally enter it even without seeing the screen, so I can connect the phone to a screen and retrieve the data.
So I ask you if you have any advice or know what I can do to unlock the phone and recover the data.
Thank you for your time.
ps: i'm new here so i don't know if i post this in the right place
Welcome to XDA.
Is the display cracked?
The easiest way at this point is to repair the damage without a factory reset is my thought.
If the display shows no signs of physical damage it may be a connector simply got displaced.
If it is the display that's damaged you could replace it but bare in mind it could the mobo that was damaged or a combination of both.
If you really need the data recovered your best shot in a professional data recover service. Expect to pay around $800 if they can retrieve it.
Always redundantly backup critical data regularly. Always use a good case to protect the device from direct impact and high G loading if dropped. If you have expandable storage use it as a data drive; all critical data goes there, then back it regularly...

No, the display is fine, no signs of physical damage. Had installed a good cover and the protective screen glass .

So I better try to open it up to see if there is anything disconnected?

Whats "mobo"?
Replacing the screen is another option I thought about, before I tried it I wanted to see if there were other ways to recover the data.
Thank you for the answers.

The glass screen protector does little to limit G loading on impact. A 4 foot drop unprotected can cause internal damage to chipsets from excessive G loading.

Yes. Or have a good repair shop evaluate it, that may be the best course of action. Samsung repair service will factory reset it if they repair it, so... they aren't an option.

Motherboard.
At this point your options are very limited unless you can connect to the device which seems unlikely.
You're welcome, good luck... you might get lucky.

1. Connect the phone to a computer: You can try connecting the phone to a computer using a USB cable. If the phone is set to "File Transfer" mode, you should be able to access the device's internal storage and copy the data to your computer.

I have already tried connecting the phone to do a data transfer with "Android File Transfer" but it fails to connect showing me this error: "Unable to connect to the device. Try reconnecting or restarting the device"

it's in Italian sorry. i just want to share the type of error.
So I think the phone is not set to "File Transfer" mode and since I can't see anything on the screen I can't unlock the phone "blindfolded", so i can't enable "File Transfer" mode and debugging.

2. Use Samsung Smart Switch: Samsung Smart Switch is a free software application that allows you to transfer data from one Samsung device to another. You can download and install Samsung Smart Switch on your computer, connect the phone to the computer, and use the software to transfer the data.

The problem always remains in unlocking the phone and seeing the actions.

3. Use Samsung Find My Mobile: If the phone is registered with Samsung Find My Mobile, you may be able to unlock the phone remotely. To do this, go to the Find My Mobile website and log in with your Samsung account credentials. From there, you can select the option to "Unlock" the phone remotely. If this option is not available, you can try other options provided by Samsung Find My Mobile, such as backing up data or wiping the device.

As i said in the first post I already tried to log into "find my samsung", but it cannot be unlocked, it tells me that the "remote unlocking" is not enable.
From the same menu I also tried to backup the files, but it says without unlocking the phone you can't backup.

4.Use Android Debug Bridge (ADB): If you are familiar with Android Debug Bridge (ADB), you can try using this tool to access the phone's files. You will need to connect the phone to a computer and enable USB debugging on the device. From there, you can use ADB commands to access the phone's files and retrieve the data.

Same problem here, i can't unlock the phone and enable USB debugging.
Thanks for answers.
Yes, you're starting to see the depth of your predicament. You could try making templates to unlock and navigate it. Even with another working same model phone this will be difficult.
That's all assuming the password wasn't corrupted from the impact...

I'm wondering if there is a way to "enter" a certain unlock pattern from the outside.
Sort of a "brute force attack" where I already have the lock pattern so just entering the right one would be enough.
I don't know if i have explained myself and if it is a possible thing to do.

Not that I'm aware of... if you can't connect with the PC. As long as it locked it's data is encrypted and not accessible.

I thought so, thank you very much.
If you really need the data and it's the OLED broken, maybe an option is switching to a cheap LCD, as they aren't much expensive and it's a lot cheaper than taking it to a service repair so they get the data. I can't think of another way to do it
