I put the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus's cameras up against its predecessor the S9 Plus, in an attempt to determine how much has improved and whether or not it's worth upgrading to.
Overall. I've found that there isn't a lot separating both these phones when it comes to the main camera and the telephoto lens that is. Actually, just a little difference, I find that the S9 Plus took pictures that were
slightly more detailed and the high dynamic range on the S9 Plus was also a little better. The pictures taken with the S9 Plus were also more vivid and saturated but whether or not you like that, would depend on personal preference.
Now, where the S10 Plus shines, is the ultra wide camera, the S9 Plus doesn't have that at all, so in that area the S10 Plus wins hands down, capable of capturing nearly as much as the eyes can see, and of course it's generally more fun to shoot landscape images with that ultra wide camera.
Another area the S10 Plus wins in is Video stabilisation at 1080p, trust me when I say the video is really stable.
If video stabilisation and ultra wide images aren't of any interest to you, then, the S9 Plus in my opinion shoots better images so there's no point in upgrading, otherwise if you want something that's versatile go ahead and upgrade to the S10 Plus.
You can either take my word for it or watch the video below, you'll find that everything I said above is mentioned in the video so it isn't mandatory to watch it.

I'm an enthusiast photographer with currently the Canon EOS 5DSR, I'm not making a lot of pictures with my phone except at work (another story )
When I received my 9+ last year, as I had heard so many good words about the camera, I test it in a shopping mall garage and it was impressive for a phone...
After that I used it indoors at work with very good results but when It tried in dark/night shots it was regrettable at least (Lot of noise)...
I received my 10+ last Thursday and Friday night I tried 2 night shots in normal view and one in tele, they where the same as 9+ with MAYBE a REALLY slight improvement...
I haven't try the super-wide yet but I will! I agree that if the reason to upgrade your phone is the camera maybe the PIXEL 3 will be better choice as it have some really impressive effects in camera... I really hope someone port the PIXEL 3 camera to my EXYNOS

Yep, the Pixel 3 is great for taking pictures at night, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro also takes really great shots at night.
Using A7 (2017) and thinking of upgrading to A70, but not sure technical specs wise if the Front-Selfie Camera, would be much better than A7 (2017).
The Culprit = Aperture.
A7 (2017) - 16 MP, f/1.9
A70 - 32 MP, f/2.0
Now I take loads of selfies and low aperture is very important for me. The new A70 has one stop higher aperture as compared to my 2 year old phone but yes the megapixels is big but tht hardly matters in how much light the module lets in.
So according to specs, shall I conclude the front shooter is equal or maybe slight worse than my current phone ?
Need inputs.
The difference between f1.9 and f2.0 is not very significant, the quality would depend more on the noise in the chip I'd have thought. In whole f-stop numbers, you'd need to go down from 2.0 to 1.4 to double the amount of light allowed in by the lens, f2.0 to f1.9 isn't even a third of a stop, even if these were real f-stop numbers anyway.
Andre
UPDATE: I got the chance to demo Live A70 and I was shocked with the performance.
The selfie camera takes photo as if heavy beauty mode is applied by default. The rear camera takes "Greyish" pictures and even video colors were way off.
Compared to my A7 2017 it was a clear downgrade and even the Samsung representative in the store agreed with my inputs...
So am sticking with my current phone for now and possibly will switch to Oppo Reno !!
So you took a couple of quick photos with store demo unit and decided that camera is bad? I'll rather trust reviewers who spend days with the device before giving impressions and actually provide picture and video samples and comparisons with other devices.

I thought something was fishy with that demo unit... as it was on Demo mode and while taking selfies there was no option to disable beauty mode.
I again tried a demo in a local shop with consumer mode - and I am happy to inform that the pics and video all seem normal and satisfactory.
BTW, Greyish tone in pics can be widely seen in reviews too!
Camera is not great at all. It is normal as other low cost phones. Also
Bluetooth is breaking a bit with head phones.
audio for receiving calls is poor.
cannot connect to external monitor with type-c to hdmi which I feel is a basic feature.
it is high cost product.
Overall for this price, it is not a good product.
Until unless some one want new phone like me, its good to wait and check for other models.
I've been using the A70 for about a week. I interacted with some A70 owners and they said that the phone had 8MP main camera and not the 32MP main camera. I gave a try to some hardware info apps and all showed 8MP camera at the back and 5.2MP camera on the front. What's wrong here? The phone is showing wrong info or it just has an 8MP camera. Can everyone confirm this?
I have also made a video on it. I'm just trying to get an answer from all the Galaxy A70 owners about their experience with this phone.
You can check it here: https://youtu.be/tOM9oNWV_rQ
I wish I'm wrong on this, Everyone please drop your comments.
No, it really is a 32mp camera module. Samsung, for whatever reason, have crammed the 32mp option in a submenu inside the camera app. Tap on the format button and choose 3:4H. Now you'll be able to use the full resolution of the camera.
Just be aware that - I don't know why - HDR does not work in 32mp mode.
All I can say is that pictures taken in low light conditions are amongst the worst I have seen. Absolutely terrible picture quality worthy of a 100$ budget phone not a premium 400$ phone.
Even my 3 years old A9 Pro 2016 has better low light capability.

I second that. I don't know why Samsung had to cripple their camera module this hard via software. Using Gcam though, the camera does produce great results in low light!
Irrespective of MP number, picture quality isn't great for sub $400 phone. Can they fix with software update? or need to change phone?

I actually wrote a post about this, didn´t see yours, was too eager to write my first post here I guess. The camera uses a new Samsung technology which only works if you choose 4:3H aspect ratio, there is no way to choose file size for each respective ratio. The pictures are hardware 4 x 8MP rendered and since the technology is new all third party camera and HW info apps only view the 8 MP .. not the x4 tetracell technology which works and is implemented in an abysmal manner.

What if one usually only uses 16:9 aspect ratio? .. limited to 8 MP? ... I call that false advertising.

Hi,
I used this version of Gcam:
S10_1_MGC_6.1.021_BSG_Arnova_TlnNeun_V1.3.030119.0 645.apk
You can find it on Androidfilehost, for example. Works like a charm on my A70. Lots of settings are actually possible - just don't try to 'force 4K on front camera' mode - it'll make the app crash all the time. Other than that, Gcam really is way better than the stock camera app and HDR+ works really really good, too. Only downside - pics are limited to 8MP at the moment, but when using RAW, it's not a big deal at all.

I downloaded the samd apk, does your night mode shots also crash the app ?
Download this Gcam mod to get full working night mode on the A70:
MGC_6.1.021_MI8_V2e

Make sure you make a few necessary changes in app settings by following this video:

Hi,
I must say that, whatever the causes, the pictures taken by this device are simply horrible.
I am not one of those so called photographers that is looking for the absolute colour reproduction and the sharpness of 10X real life.
I just want to have some pictures for moments I want to remember.
But even for that, this device doesn't do the job
All pictures are blurry, out of focus...
I can't even set the picture quality in the settings of the camera app.
I just can set the aspect ratio (in the Photo part) and the video resolution in the settings.
But no way to set the number of pixels I want for the pictures.
That is another dark side of this device that looked so promising on paper but doesn't deliver at all.
So goes Samsung... and device will be sent back to Amazon.

Agreed, this phones's cameras suck.
You can choose high resolution mode (32mp) by tapping on the small 3:4 button then choosing 3:4H (H stands for high quality or high resolution).
There is an update rolling in India right now which promises to improve camera quality.

Sounds very promising. In the meantime, use the app 'open camera' for 100% JPG quality or even full size RAW output. It's got fully manual controls, too.
Yes, it looks like camera software improvements are coming soon:

SAMSUNG A70 CAMERA Poor Quality images and videos
I just bought Samsung a70, and the camera gives very poor images for 738 kb sizes only. I bought that mobile from samsung site, how to return the mobile. any help.
i am more than disappointed with the main camera...it is below any standards for modern phones...even my no name chinese phone couple of years old is making better photos....it is a shame for samsung to produce such half hearted pathetic camera...photos are smudgy, soft, and lack sharpness...auto focus is sluggish and in most cases you don't know is it even work...my old phone has clear green square signs all over screen which shows if photo is in focus or not, here you don't know what is going on...samsung is trying to impress all of us with 32mp number, but it is pathetic as well...i have tried some of the gcam camera and results are clearly better....so, it is obvious samsung is treating customers badly and sell them inferior camera not only to direct competition regarding price, but camera which is even worse than cameras in 50 dollars no name chinese phones...to say i am feeling cheated is understatement...
to be honest, live focus/blur/portrait mode is doing very good job?? how come? it looks like samsung is artificially made camera bad and not even try to make things better through software changes...
i would like to hear your thoughts about it? are you feeling cheated and disappointed about main camera in a70?

Back camera is simply bad.
Front camera is very good and specially in night. All I would like to change in that phone is the back camera which I do not really understand why Samsung are doing this....
Samsung A70 32MP camera (top camera) is not working
All cameras the 8MP, 5MP and the front camera are working. Im sure they are working because I tried blocking each one depending on settings. But I cant seem to find the settings on how will the top camera will work. I tried the 3:4H ratio already but its the middle camera that is being utilized. For the wide angle, it is the bottom back camera. How can I utilize the top camera at the back?

well, top camera's job is depth. You can use it with live focus.
32MP one is in the middle of them. It's the main camera.
And bottom camera is wide angle as you knew.

this phone a70 is a total lie.
it has a 8 magapixel awful camera.
it is absolutely not 32 megapixel by hardware. maybe it is 32 megapixel by software.
photos have no details, overprocessed, photos are washed out. like a watercolor paint. there are no textures. all textures are washed out.
colors are either too washy or either too bright.
low light performance is among the worst.
SAMSUNG, DO YOU KNOW THE WORD CALIBRATION???

incomplete products, incomplete software, full of bugs, full of bloatware...
and i forgot they have the M10,M20,M30 as well as M20s,M30s....
pufffff LIER HOAX COMPANY SAMSUNG.
Hi to all
I watch so many YT videos about camera comparison and see so many bad things about S20U camera. Is that because still camera software in beta or it is just what S20U is?
I watch S20U vs:
- Note 10 Plus,
- Huawei P40 Pro,
- Xiaomo Mi10,
- Iphone 11 Pro
And yes S20U have new big camera sensor but still they are no big improvements in night shoot's, astophotography, zoom, night videos, portret and etc.. And every phone have better camera in most situation. Whats wrong with S20U? Will Samsung fix this with software updates?
All the best
Not quite sure how you think most phones have a better camera but from someone who ACTUALLY has an S20U I can tell you this camera is fantastic. And with every update will continue to get better and better.
Feel free to not purchase it though. It isn't for everyone.

Come on now. You know that's not exactly true. This phone has pretty serious camera issues, from poor optics to focus problems, etc. It's not a terrible camera, but it is not worth the price tag. Samsung has to do a lot more work on the software side to make it better. I've had the phone since launch and while updates did improve things, it still falls short compared to other flagships. Both iPhone 11 Pro and Pixel 4 take better photos (I have those phones too), as does Note 10+ in most cases (I have it too for comparison). With that said, it is possible to take good photos with the S20 Ultra, so it's not all bad.
If anyone bought the Ultra Solely for the camera then that was Dumbassville! Other than the camera however The 120hz screen rocks, 5g works good depending on your coverage area. It's also a speedy phone. At least my US Unlocked 512gb version is. But if your buying the phone expecting a mobile photography studio like Samsung is hyping in their ads you can forget that BS now because that's what it is. Just plain BS! That is not to say the cameras can't take good pictures or the software won't get better. It just means if your expecting a DSLR or Wonder Miracle camera on a phone it ain't happening. There is a reason those $10,000 DSLR lenses take great night time photos and cost so much. You will never achieve that quality on a phone camera.
I'm one of the few people who buys phone not for the camera but making receiving calls, YouTube media consumption social networking camera is bottom of the list.
I think the camera and video is brilliant and better then most flagship. Its good for an average consumer use for expert photographers not to sure as don't know enough. The good thing is most of us aren't experts.
I prefer the s20 plus as its slimmer and has less protruding camera. Its better buy then huawei as g services are missing and better software and screen. Better then oppo due to mainly software and less curved screen. Oppo could have been my choice were it not for the curved screen. I hate that, most overrated and wasted tech.
Thats my rant and impression of Samsung s20.

That would make more sense than paying 17% more for a 6% larger screen. The battery is also 11% larger, but the plus is also lighter and thinner, especially at the camera bump. The cameras are the most significant difference between the two, it would only make sense for that to be the main motivating factor in paying the premium (especially considering the plus is tending to get marked down more).

The camera is literally the one reason to go for the Ultra vs. the Plus. Screen and battery size difference are insignificant in this decision, so no, Samsung does need to step up and make the Ultra worthy of its name. With that said, I am not expecting DSLR quality. I have a 5D Mark IV and some very high end lenses and know the difference. However, matching or beating the Pixel 4 series or the iPhone 11 Pro shouldn't be a problem for the camera setup on the Ultra, except Samsung botched the implementation badly.

Agree with you.
Pay 1400$ for S20U
- BATTERY not good than 11 pro max or oppo find x2 or p40 pro
- Exynos 990 so bad ( ex 990 < kirin 990 < sd 865)
- Camera can not take the moment well as iphone or other phone. Can't focus well, but photo and video day light is ok.
- screen ok but oppo find x2 pro's screen are better
Sorry for my bad english.

About Camera:

Hi guys!
I'm considering a replacement phone for my ageing Oneplus 5. So far it has been Oneplus 9, Pixel 6 and Smasung S22. Pixel 6 camera is AWESOME, detailed, fast, great. But the phone itself is not. Oneplus 9's camera is not so good, the weakest of all three phones. S22's camera seems to be placed in between, however the JPEG compression the stock Samsung camera does ruins the details in photos and it cannot be configured.
I've tried various Gcam mods/configs, no one has ever worked to same basic satisfaction.
So my question is whether there is some good camera app replacement and/or modified Samsung stock camera app.
Thanks a lot!
I don't have an answer to this, but hopefully, more people can chime in to discuss around the camera.
I went from Pixel 2XL to S22 Exynos. I Miss a lot the photos from my Pixel.
The S22 photos are ok but it feels like a downgrade against the Pixel (and I'm talking about 4 year old phone!).
Also, the camera shooter is somewhat slow. Just this weekend I tried taking a few portrait photos of a dog that was standing still, and some of the photos came a little bit blurred/moved, which was very frustrating by the time I realise that, and there is no way to refocus in edit mode like I was able to do on the Pixel. I think that's somewhat related to portrait with the 3X telelens.
I tried a few Google Cameras on the S22, and only got one to actually work (picked from reddit). But the results are not that different than stock camera for some reason.
I'll stick with this phone for a year or two, but I believe I'll eventually come back to a Pixel just because of the camera. Shoot and go, and have an incredible perfect and sharp picture.
The video is another story. Samsung does a great job with stabilisation there. But I actually do way more photos than videos, so its not a thing that I actually enjoy.

I am using S22 - SD variant. In my opinion, I don't see anything like that. Maybe because I haven't compared it side by side with Pixel 6. One thing I know for sure that S22 is way better than my previous S20 FE 5G and S8 in terms of details and overall camera performance.
Use Pro mode on the stock camera app. If that doesn't satisfy you, we have Expert Raw App, exclusive for newer Samsung flagships, a notch above the regular Pro mode.
I was close to changing my s22 for iphone 12 or even Galaxy a53 5g but today I tried 50 mpx mode and pictures are imprssively detailed and low of noise. I do not know if they changes something in camera processing in this mode but pictures are much better than 12 mpx standard mode.
