Hi..hoping someone can help me out.
BACKGROUND
Got an unlocked, unbranded, basically unaltered-from-the-factory HTC Desire A8181.
Been eagerly awaiting the Froyo update which I happily noted (on the phone itself) was available yesterday in OTA
Unhappily, I was unable to complete the update with it stopping around the 50% mark when I ran into a data download limit.
ISSUE
I have now tried reconnecting to get the update (Settings > About Phone > System software updates) and the phone is thinking it is up to date! (Your phone is up to date. There are no updates available for your phone)
Clearly, it isn't up to date (Settings > About Phone > Software Information: Firmware version=2.1-update1)
QUESTION
Is there a "registry" or something somewhere that I need to hack to tell it that it isn't up to date?
Thanks in anticipation - really want to get the update!!
(yes..I've tried restarting the phone..no luck though it did come up with a notification that other programs had updates but not the Android OS itself!)

Sounds like you using an Asian ROM, they haven't been released yet. I had the same, so I Made a gold card, changed to a WWE rom and then updated OTA.
Let me know if you need instructions.
Thanks for the reply wickedpenguin (ah..gotta to love forum names).
So that it is clear:
This A8181 is from the UK
It did indicate there was an OTA update available which as I said I was half way through prior to data disconnection - the A8181 only thought it was up to date after this update interruption.
So since it is from the UK and I did get an indication an update was available..do I have an Asian ROM? (please forgive me if I'm wrong..new at this).
If I do have an Asian ROM..did what you write before mean changing it to another type? (obviously from that it means I will need instructions if this is something I need to do)
Thanks!
I have the same problem.
I canceled the update due to i wanted to run it from a WiFi connection and now i cannot update anymore.
I receive that the phone is up to date, but it is not
Can someone help us!!!

Exactly the same thing here. I tried a factory wipe also tried wiping the cache and booting without SDCard, nothing seems to work.
I can't post links yet but had similar experiences and have documented my experience in the "Desire General" section. The key for me was to update using a Gold Card.
I had the same problem this morning, but now it's available again.
Arrgh! Foiled again!!
Ok..I second the above. I managed to get the Desire to recognise it wasn't up to date today. After waiting a LONG time for the 90Mb update I then run into another problem...
DESIRE NEEDS 25Mb phone memory to do the update!
I cleared the space but then ended up with the same problem where the phone thinks it is up to date (when it isn't).
So..take home message people - make sure your phone has at least 25Mb memory free! (bring on the App2SD)
Android OS developers - please take note that the phone should check for this prior to downloading a 90Mb system update!! Alternatively..make it obvious to the user how to run an update that has already been downloaded (I can't even see where it is on my SD card).
Now I'm back to square one. Is the day in which you tried to do a failed update a factor in the phone recognising if it is up to date or not? If so..I suppose I just have to try this again tomorrow? Grr..
@ DesireOwner10 i noticed you did a factory wipe, but did you mean factory settings restore or hard drive format (via the volume down + on/off button menu) ?
I too am having this problem recieved the notification earlier, but no longer available. My phone is or has never been rooted. Please help!!!
any solution
hi guys,
same problem for me here - it did indicate the update, but I had no time to install, so just canceled that.
Now, when I have time, there is no update available ;-) what the hell is going on ??
I don't want to use gold card if not really necessary.

Thanks for response.
I bought this phone from someone else. I myself didn't do a factory wipe on it but given what you're saying, is that what Firmware version=2.1-update1 means?
It has been 2 days since my 2nd unsuccessful up date - the phone still thinks it is up to date.
I got in touch with HTC. Their suggestion was to wind the phone forward 2 years - not sure if this would work but would if I could: The phone is managing to hang onto the current date despite me manually setting it (yes, I have unchecked the "Use network-provided values" option and have even gone as far as taking out the SIM card to stop it from getting onto the cell network).
Anyone have any ideas on how to get my phone to get with the program or at least force it to go forward 2 years to see if that will work?
Thanks.

Exactly the same problem here. I've got the same firmware version as you. I bought the phone brand new from Amazon UK.
I read elsewhere about the date trick. I'm having the same issue updating the date, it instantly changes back. This doesn't happen when the phone is disconnected from the internet so I presume the date is being updated from an NTP server or something. Of course, the phone has to be connected to do the update so I'm looking for a way of switching this auto-date feature off, or blocking it at the router. Blocking the NTP port doesn't seem to work. Any ideas? Does this date trick even work anyway?!

Wow, quick reply! Really enjoying this forum...
So are you saying that setting the date forward, say 2 years, doesn't trick the phone into updating?
Might be getting somewhere with this...
I've blocked all network traffic to my HTC Desire at my wifi's firewall, and checked via the phone's browser to make sure that the phone can't get online. Then I tried to check for updates again, and the phone came back with the same message 'Your phone is up to date'. It couldn't possibly have checked, as it can't communicate with the update server.
The router reports that the phone is trying to access 63.241.57.68 when checking for updates. Using my laptop, I've found that I can't access this IP address. Traceroute doesn't work, and centralops.net can't reach it. So I wonder if the reason that our phones won't update is either because they're either attempting to connect to the wrong IP address, or the update server is down (or overloaded)?

I have a same problem. I have unbranded Desire (never locked, never rooted, bought in EU) and I get a message that my phone is up to date. My friends who bought Desire at a same carrier as I did already got Froyo on their phones. I can move the date forward (2011 or 2012), but as soon as I enable Wlan connection, date goes back to 2010. I don't want to use gold card because Froyo should be already available OTA.
The more I look into this, the more I think that it's just a case of the update servers being hammered.
Apparently the traceroute I tried earlier wouldn't have worked anyway, as the connection is routed through attens.net who block traceroutes, pings etc. for security reasons.
Just keep trying, I'm sure eventually we'll get through!
Thanks for the contributions all

So according to the above it would seem the problem is more fundamental to the phone itself thinking it is up to date..perhaps it records the last date of its latest "update" and checks that against the current date? If that's the case, the moving the date forward thing might work but there doesn't seem to be a way of doing this.
Besides..it was only 1 day between my 1st & 2nd failed update attempts so unless this changes, one should only need to wait a day between attempts?
Anyone with any further thoughts? Thanks.
Another possibility is that the phone just says it's up to date unless it receives a message from the update server saying otherwise? So that no reply would still result in that same message.
If I knew how to inspect the actual data being transmitted and received by the phone, I could investigate further. Any ideas?
Hi guys i have a lg g3 that has been running fine on kitkat

Same issue here.
I get around it by forgetting network then just signing in again. Wifi works perfectly until I leave the house and return later. Then I just do the above and viola, working wifi.
I've checked with speed test app and wifi is definitely working.
Funny thing is, if I switch off wifi then turn back on it also works.
Only when ive left home and returned later does this bug arise.
Hello guys,
This thread is a little bit old, but I am curious to know if you found a workaround for this issue.
I have the same problem as the OP (not at the second poster): since I received Stock Lollipop the WiFi won't turn on. When I try to, it says "turning on" for a while then acts like it is off.
I just bought my LG G3, NCIX the reseller, refuses to refund me or replace my phone...
I performed several factory resets and tried to flash different KK stock Roms. The weird thing is that the WiFi works with KK...
Thanks for your help.
Identical experience here.
I recently got a D855 16GB, which was on stock unbranded V10a, jumped through several OTA updates through V10g, V10j, and V10k (IIRC) all with wifi working fine before getting the lollipop upgrade OTA for V20c.
Immediately wifi will not switch on - the switch itself is on, but with the off section a lighter grey compared to the bluetooth switch.
On the wifi screen itself it says "Turning Wi-Fi on..." but after a while the switch reverts to off.
It's now had OTAs to V20e and V20h, but wifi is dead on both versions.
Note that this is stock and unrooted (never rooted) so I can't believe it's something I've done. Next trick will be to root and poke around /data/misc/wifi.
Does bluetooth work or the problem is only with the wifi? I also have the same problem, wifi, bluetooth is not working and when I check in the settings the mac adress it says "unknown".

Unfortunately this isn't a unique problem. There have been countless bad updates from multiple manufacturers. In this litigious world, I'm surprised no one has sought damages for bad updates that effect usability.
I have the same problem from yesterday. wifi and bluetooth seem to be turning on but they never turn on. i've done many factory resets but it didn't work. has someone found a solution?

ok, after 24h with this problem I think I got it back to working. Let me explain what have I done:
1. Mine is a dual sim model, that I bought in hong kong by the end of 2014.
2. Yesterday, I removed sim #2 (no longer needed), without removing the battery. I had a couple of messages indicating to restart the phone, blah blah. Can't remember if I finally restarted it or not.
3. This morning I saw no wifi connection in my phone, only 3G. Tried to start wifi in the quick access menu, but this kept blinking, never starting wifi. Restarting phone... nothing. turning off bluetooth... nothing.
I figured out that the problem had to be related with the SIM as this is the last thing I had done with the phone. Thus, I tried this, with success:
4. I turned off the phone, changed sim from slot #1 to slot#2 and started the phone. Wow, it worked for some minutes, then stopped, then started again. Well, a good sign.
5. Changed again sim from slot #2 to slot #1: Wifi working again. After some time it stopped working, but soon started again. Hasn't given me more problems (after only 30 min, that's true).
Hope it helps.

Got the same problem here. I have my G3 since november 2014 and recently I rooted it to install CM 13 on it and Xposed bcs I got tired of the laggy software of LG. One morning I woke up to drink some water and saw my phone restarting a lot of time... ok I thought its a simple bootloop. Tried to install CM again, didnt fix it. Flashed stock software and still... Bought new battery and new power flex and the problem is still there. I go into download mode, installed the software with LGs support tool and got pass the bootloop, but now wifi nor bluetooth works. I thought it's the software so I dared myself again to root it and installed TWRP and CM13, but it wouldn't boot. I installed then Liquidsmooth, based on CM13, and got it to boot up, but in the configuration menu where WiFi is needed to be added it couldn't turn on. I skiped it and in the middle of the process it started again to restart. I don't know if it's a hardware based problem or software... But I would like to try everything out before I have to buy a new phone.

I installed CM13 and in the setup screen I actually had wifi and I could connect to my router. It was kinda strange. But bcs I have some problems beside wifi, the reboot thing, I couldn't test out if it works too. Try flashing CM13 or ROMs that are based on it like Liquidsmooth. Maybe it will help.

Hi,
So my phone had the dreaded bootloop a month ago. No biggie, sent it into warranty. Took one month for them to get it back to me and low and behold, my 6.0 LG G4 is now 5.1. No biggie I thought, ill just check for updates. The only thing is, there is no Software Update or Check for updates anywhere. I've tried the "about phone" section and the "software version" section too. Nothing. Zero. The LG update centre also automatically takes me to the app update page rather than the software one.
I've tried connecting it to my computer however the LG software just doesn't recognise it being connected. Tried 4 different computers. It also has a weird quirk where if i switch it out of MTP mode, it doesn't go back to it until i factory reset. I'm assuming a lot of these issues can be resolved if I just update it, however I cannot for the life of me. Any suggestions short of taking it back to the store?

I have an lg g4 with the same problem.
No software update center. Only app updates
Not getting connected to LG Bridge and LG UP,
etc
Kindly help me to update marshmallow
Ive had this issue in the past. With the mtp protocol on ls991. Only time it ever did as described is when rooted. I had to use the dialer codes. To get into the usb settings and change them manually there. Not the ones in notif bar but. In hidden menu.
The key there is to never touch the usb settings never switch to charge only or ptp it will never go back to mtp. Mine persisted throught factory resets. Only lg flashtool and total restore fix it the rerooted
Sounds like u got a bad firmware download. From the factory. And its weird cause lg always updates the device to the newest firmware.

Okay thank you! Will try it in a few days time once I am able to give it the time needed.
It is happening to me too, I'm on stock 13.0.4 SKHMIXM, bootloader locked, it happened in 13.0.3 too. Sometimes, I see I have no services, no data, no GPS. But WiFi works great, so if I'm in house I don't always see it, but it means I cannot receive call!!!
I tried to enable/disable sim/data/location/airplane/etc nothing works.
Only way to re-make it works is to reboot the phone, and after 2 or 3 weeks it will happen again, this is the price to pay to have cheap chinese phone...
Try booting into Android with Safe Mode. (and disable Airplane Mode if enabled)
Power + Volume Up > Safe Mode
Or try this:
Settings > Updater > Tap on the "13" several times, this will enable additional Updater-features. Download the latest package and install it.
My guess is that your update may have been corrupt.
Other than that.. Factory Reset or connecting phone to PC and flashing ROM using Fastboot & Mi Flash or Terminal.
I've 13.0.7 and everything's flawless.
So the Xiaomi service center told me that it is possibly a motherboard issue. How can a software update suddenly awaken a hardware issue?
So I had not unlocked my bootloader via my Mi account and it needs mobile data for the same and hence I am unable to flash it since my network is still unavailable even after a factory reset. Any other way I can flash my phone with an older version of MIUI or I will have to submit my phone to the service center?

Same issue i am facing after MIUI updation for 13.0.3.0 SJCINXM ... suddenly all networks are vanished ... if i do manual search for networks then i get a message 'Couldn't search for mobile networks' . Voice call is only possible if wifi is enabled.. This is really a horrible experience and i am unable to find out a way to get rid of this situation.. I am using Redmi 9 Prime handset .. Before this update everything was surperb and flawless.
It is still happening with the latest Android 13 and MIUI14, it's frustrating... sometimes when the phone switch wifi/lte/wifi/lte/etc when you go outside, the modem crashes, it internally bootloop and the phone becomes warm and can lose 25% battery in like 15 minutes. Only way is to reboot the phone.
I had a similar problem. Were you able to solve it?
After applying the Android 12 OTA upgrade today, I can boot into the phone, however it looks like the System UI is constantly stuck instantly crashing upon launch, then reloading. the wallpaper is flickering on and off. I can take calls (and reboot the phone) just about, but I can't open any menu aside from the Power menu, or anything like that. Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve this? I'd try and enable adb mode or something like that but I can't beacuse I can't open any menu. I managed to boot into safe mode, but that had no effect and the problems are still happening.
Sometimes I can get it to briefly show the system icons, but it disappears too quickly for me to be able to do anything. If I was able to open the settings app, i'd be able to put it in USB file transfer mode to get my stuff of it, but I can't even do that.
Using the LG_UP tool, I can downgrade to the previous firmware, however I can't do anything as it then won't accept my encryption pin code. If flash the (broken) latest firmware back on, I can decrypt the phone, but I'm back where I was again where the system UI app just instantly crashes.
Right, so I think it's related to the lock screen. I was able to (somehow) manage to get it to the home screen from where I could open the settings app up and everything was fine, and was able to turn on USB file transfer mode. However as soon as the phone locked again, it stopped working. But it's very wierd.
You could try to do a factory reset. I think you have to start the device while holding one of the two power keys.

I think that would work, but i'm trying to avoid doing that as there's still stuff i'd like to get off of it. Maybe a future firmware update may fix this bug.
Most probably there will be no further update. Do you have a chance to take a look at the system protocol via "adb logcat" during the crash? Typically the notorious "com.android.systemui" is the culprit.
PS: In fact it does not matter, but is your device some 820 (G8) or the downgraded version 810 (G8s)?

If you do decide to factory reset, please let us know if it resolved your issue.

once i figured out the specific recovery mode combo and performed data wipe reset etc
it has seemed to of fixed it, phone calls and messaging are operational are what ive so far checked asa working phone out not recieved any incoming calls yet but messaging works

It's the G8S. And I didn't have debug mode enabled, so adb doesn't work.

Yes, i'm pretty confident if I did a factory reset, it would work fine, but I really don't want to do that until i've got all my stuff off it.
i hear ya, understood, i just thought id fyi,
that the reset, as undesireable as it is. has appeared to fix the issue and phone, is as far as i can determine fully operational . the finger print reader, phone calls, and messaging all work
i just got the phone fixed less than an hour ago, after installing the 40a update a lil before noon or 2 hours ago lol
