Google Voice Help?

I'm thinking about signing up for Google Voice, but it's telling me I either can use my current number or get a Google number and I have no idea which to pick. My main interest is Google Voicemail where I get transcripts, etc... but I don' want to miss out on the features that you get if you use a full Google voice number, even if I don't use them immediately and only use them at some point down the road.
Can I get a GV number, have my busy and unanswered call get forward to Google (for free on Sprint), and have the ability to in the future use my GV number for the other features as well?

So, I signup for GV and get the number, then call sprint (do I have to call them?) to setup a conditional forward of my number on Busy/Unanswered to my GV number.
Then when I'm using my phone, it's still using my normal Sprint number to dial and receive?

You don't need to call sprint at all. Signup for google voice. Confirm your cell number on google voice online. After everything is setup dial *28 then your gv number on your phone. All of your voicemails will go to google voice now. to deactivate it, dial *28 then gv phone number.

Really? Because when I told google voice to handle sprint voice mail during setup it told me that wasn't possible with sprint yet...

GV
GV can handle your voicemails without having GV take over your phone. You lose virtual voicemail, but you gain transcribed voicemails and the ability to listen to them online.

no it works, that just means that you wont be able to 'listen' in on a phone call and be able to pick up when someone is leaving a voicemail aka screening
or like the previous user above me said.... virtual voicemail

google voice is bad ass, i really like it.
if the 'broke' people or the folks who always buy prepaid was smart...they would just buy an android phone outright on ebay, craigslist or something and get a google voice number
i mean free calls anywhere in the US and text messaging?
damn near free phone.
i use it when i call phones who dont share same carrier... or low on minutes or whatever, etc etc.
the blocking a number feature is bomb too!!! not to mention dedicated voicemail greetings for each user/number

Google Voice

I have the option to pick 10 friends which I can call without burning up my minutes with Verizon. I wonder what would happen if I put my google voice number to the list, and start making/receiving calls from now on with my google voice number. Will I be able to call within the US and Canada for free?

If you google how to do it then it should work, but might only work incoming or outgoing calls, not both. Most likely incoming I think. When you USED to dial out, it would always dial the same number, but now, it dials a different number to dial out and isnt always the same. Google it and I am sure you can find a tutorial somewhere.

Add your GV# to FnF then get Flex Dialer Pro from the Market. Once setup it will call out using your GV#. That way all calls coming & going are free.

It works for outgoing calls if you have the old google voice apk. the new one on the market uses multiple numbers instead of connecting to the same server everytime. here you it is. this is the one I use it always dials out the same number http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7628419/com.google.android.apps.googlevoice.apk Do NOT UPDATE!

This is correct for outgoing calls.
For incoming calls, you can add your google voice number to your F&F and then set Settings -> Calls -> Caller ID (incoming) to "Display my google voice number."
You then lose caller ID, but the calls are free.
More hassle than its worth imo.

Using the older .apk you'll have to add 2 numbers to your FnF. One for outgoing calls & your GV#. The outgoing number does sometimes change depending on your location as far as I can tell. If you set it up as I suggested earlier you'll use only your GV# in FnF.

How do you use Google Voice to make regular calls and texts?

Basically I want it to take over the dialer and texting portion. I may be confused, but I could have sworn I sworn I say it being able to do these things. Also, I heard you can use GV to take over your regular voice plan? Or is that Groove IP? Idk

Google Voice doesn't work as a VoIP service alone. It works as a "forwarding" number to your normal cell #. It costs you minutes. You can configure the Google Voice app in a way that when you dial a number from the default dialer, it will either ask you which # to use, or just use your GV# every time. Texts will be received in the Google Voice app, but you can configure it to forward them to the Messages app, also. If you want a recommendation, I'd say just use the Google Voice app for SMS and don't bother with forwarding.
GrooVe IP (and Talktatone, SIP clients, etc.) all work as VoIP services to intercept incoming Google Voice calls that are forwarded to Google Chat (Google Talk). Incoming calls to your GV# are forwarded to Google Chat (instead of your carrier #), then the app picks them up and routes it to your phone to take the VoIP call (with no minutes cost). GrooVe IP integrates into the dialer really well, but the quality wasn't great or consistent, which is the case with most VoIP calls.

In Google Voice, go to settings -> Making calls -> Use Google Voice to make all calls.
This will "hijack" all calls made from your phone. What happens is when you make a call, it will actually call some random number Google made up specifically for you, then it will get forwarded to the number you actually wanted to dial.
This will use minutes, as mentioned.
As for texts, google voice cannot "hijack" the same way it can for phone calls. I'm guessing it's a compromise google made with carriers to not steal money away from them. You can still receive texts through google voice, but not through the native Messenger app.

This, but you can choose what your Google Voice number is. Its only randomly assigned if you tell it to be. For example when creating Google Voice, I got a GV# that's the same 7-digit # as my carrier one, but with a different area code. Simple to remember.

You can have your GV App receive messages then put them in the Messenger app if you'd like. Its messier though, as it assigns a random # to each contact. I'd say just use the GV App for your SMS.

Yeah, what I meant by random number was that when calling out, it will actually call a Google associated number (which seems random to me) before forwarding it with your GV# as the caller id. If you look at your bill, it will be all to the same number.

Google Voice Voicemail setup

has anyone been able to setup google voice to handle voicemail on their verizon LG G4? I tried setting it up but it could not configure and I poked around online and found a thread on the verizon forums where people were talking about the same issues.

You have to call and have Verizon activate it. I use it all the time with Verizon and my G4. I used it on my LG G2 also. It is not something that just works out of the box. It is a (paid?) feature.
I know because when I switched from the G2 to the G4, my Visual VM app wasn't working. I had to call Verizon and have them reactivate it before the app would start working.

so i would just tell them i want to use google voice as my VM provider instead of them?

You don't have to call Verizon at all. Simply dial the forwarding numbers.

Usually just the *71 plus your Google Voice number is all you have to do.

That's how you set it up. After your phone rings enough times, it will swap over to your Google Voice for voicemail. In your Google Voice settings just have it set to not do anything regarding calls.

so if i have my gv number ringing on my phone now, this method will not work, as it would ring twice right?

I have Google Voice voicemail fully set up. Confirmed working in Hangouts.
Follow the instructions and make sure you expand the section specifically for Verizon subscribers. When you dial each of the three numbers, you'll get a confirmation window on your phone about call forwarding.
As an added bonus, I disabled the visual voicemail app (VVM.apk) using the debloater tool. This way, I don't have to deal with visual voicemail , the standard VZW voicemail, or OTA updates ever again.

Google Voice is working completely for me as well and has been since I received my G4. If you follow the directions that have been posted several times, you'll set it up without issue.
One additional thing I will note is that Google Voice and VoLTE (Advanced Calling) on Verizon don't always play well together. If you're experiencing problems getting Google Voice to stick as your voicemail, turn Advanced Calling off and try setting it up again.

Default dialer and Google Voice do not mingle well

I did a search on the forums and didn't find any relevant threads, so I'm creating this one.
I have my Google Voice app set to show a prompt asking which number I want to use before each call. However, I've noticed that on occasion the call will go through using my carrier line before I even make a selection on the prompt. I tested this further and set Google Voice to always use Google Voice line to make calls, then I made calls to another number I have access to. After several test calls, I found that about half the time, the call still goes through my carrier line. There wasn't any indication on my phone that it was using the carrier line or Google Voice line.
If I use the Google Voice app to make a call, it will always use my Google Voice line, even though it's going through the phone's stock dialer app.
I'm wondering if anyone else has similar issues and what solutions there might be to fix this. I wanted to replace the stock dialer with Google's dialer app and Google Contact app, but it seems that Google's dialer app is not compatible with the Mate SE/7x.
Can anyone think of a solution? I think that by somehow making the stock dialer delay for 2-3 seconds before each call, it would give enough time for Google Voice prompt to show up and freeze the dialer until I make a choice. I'm not sure how to do this, though.
Alternatively, are there any good dialers to replace the stock one?

I am having a similar issue on my Honor 7X and my wife's 6X. GV has been working great for months on both phones. Now (I think we noticed it in late April) when someone calls our Primary Phone # it doesn't get routed to GV Voice Mail, it goes to the Carrier's VM. For my wife, when someone calls her GV # it doesn't ring on her phone and is routed to her carrier VM. When she sets removes her "Linked Number" then calls to her GV # are routed to GVM but do not ring on her phone.
I have tried installing an older version of GV, no luck, and I have since been updated to EMUI 8 (Android 8.0) and I still have the same problem. I'm wondering if it's a carrier issue/change? We use Consumer Cellular (ATT network). When I go into Call Forwarding in Call Options it will not let me set a Call Forwarding number and tells me "Unexpected Network Response."
Hopefully someone will fix this soon. My wife uses her GV# for work.

Having the same issue, it's not consistent, some calls go to gv some to carrier vm...
