Anyone else having horrible GPS issues? - Samsung Galaxy S20 / S20+ / S20 Ultra Questions &

I live in la... work in production and use my navigation constantly. This is killing me
The GPS doesn't lock reliably and it loses location all the time... usually at the worst possible time of course ?.
I had a one plus McClaren and it had the same issues... actually this phone is worse.
Can't really blame the phone it really seems like its has something to do with the 5g. My pixel 3xl works flawlessly with the same sim.
Turning off 5g doesn't solve the issue for me either. So no easy fix.

Mine is dead on.

Mine has been off and will not lock quickly sometimes.

I had a OP 6T before this s20 Ultra. I had the same issued you did with my 6T as your McLaren.
I do think the Samsung is actually a little bit better than the 6T. The 6T would just randomly stop tracking me and place me on the next road over, etc.
The S20 just stops tracking for a moment then picks right back up. I see issues with it but not like I did with 6T. I also think moving from T-Mo to ATT gives me a more reliable data connection so GPS seems a little better.
I also use my phone for DoorDash and hate these GPS issues.
Some people never see the issue but run 4 to 10 hours a day with GPS and I see it all the time.
BUt to answer your question. Yep, it seems like Android 10 itself is the actual culprit. This is what I have read when I was the 6T. Dont know if there is any truth to that.

S20 Ultra - started experiencing gps issues today too. On and off, and haven't been able to permanently fix yet.

My pixel 3xl has android 10 on it and works flawlessly.
Every 5g phone I've tried has had GPS lock issues. T-mobile released an update that was supposed to fix it when I had the one plus 7t pro McClaren and it improved it but definitely didn't fix it.

I have issues with my ultra as well. Using waze it was putting me almost a Mille off I had to stop and restart everything and then it worked. Someone in the S20 sub reddit mentioned it and a bunch of people had the issue as well.

Ya know I hate to bring it up but a scary thought occurred to me...
The gps issues make the find me app almost useless. God forbid you leave or your phone walks off.
If the gps doesn't track correctly that feature is not gonna be reliable.
I don't even know who to blame here...
The device the 5g???
Seems to be pretty obvious its a 5g issue. None of my 4g phones have the gps lock issue.
Why do they even integrate it into the data. Couldn't it run as a standalone? Its got its own antenea doesn't it?
This is so disappointing... i did NOT buy this phone for the 5g but it seems that it might ruin it for me.
My gps is pretty important to me.

"the 5g???" That's a valid assumption imo, 5G interference(stronger source) against GPS(weaker RF signals)

I'm with tmo and sometimes I have these issues on my s10+. Tmo in Miami sucks. I'm also switching to at&t since they have better coverage in South Florida than Tmo.

I'm on the T-Mobile S20 Ultra.
I recently came from the OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren edition. GPS would not lock on the McLaren 5G because of 5G. When you disabled it, it would start working again if connected on LTE or WIFI.
Considering someone above tried that already, it might be a few other things:
#1 - Depends on the GPS app you are using. Maps worked best with Google Location Services enabled. Waze has been wonky on all devices lately. It took me 10-15 seconds to get a lock last night as an example but it eventually locked on (unlike the OnePlus McLaren which could go forever until it did).
#2 - Software glitch. Just like the OnePlus McLaren, a patch will be released to fix the issues with GPS and 5G. It was an issue on a lot of 5G variants of phones.
#3 - 5G Interferes with GPS (rumor and speculation by others)

I have the same issue sometimes its fine and other times I'm 600 meters off to the north east. It feels random. When I plug my phone into my android auto it locks right on but according to gps status pro the device thinks its 600 meters off. So when I unplug it shoots me right back to the wrong location.

What’s weird is I used GPS on the phone to drive from Northern to Southern CA on Wednesday. Then I think on the last part of the trip, as I arrived in LA, the GPS lost and couldn’t maintain lock. Yesterday and today GPS lock was nonexistent driving around Ontario, Rialto areas of SoCal. Had to rely on map and directions of Waze and not tracking location.

You using The International Version? Because the problem is with the Snapdragon chipsets on the U.S. Phones. The Exynos chipsets in the International version don't have this problem.

G988U - Snapdragon - never had an Issue that I am aware of - when I run an apk to test GPS, I pickup all the satelites in seconds- it happens really quick and I haven't noticed any issues -
tell me how I can 'test it" to see if there are issues I am not aware of - but otherwise, it seems really good to me....

I guess I am lucky then. I haven't really had any issues with this phone, aside from a little bit of the focus issues that were happening with the camera - those have seemed to gotten better too - and like most previous Samsung PHones the S20 ultra will only get better as more updates are released.
The screen shot below is from the GPS Test apk - in the past, if I tried doing a test indoors, it usualy took a few minutes to acquire satelights - but with my new S20 Ultra - I acquire satelights within seconds of opening the apk. It happens really fast for me....hope yours gets working better in the near future...

I'm on the US Unlocked Snapdragon and i was definitely having GPS issues. I had GPS Status & Toolbox app installed with the Time to fix status enabled. Almost always between 60 to 90 seconds to get first fix even after doing it repetitively. After the latest firmware update i'm now getting an almost instant fix based on the GPS Status & Toolbox app. I was also having issues with WAZE not locking on for a long time. Google Maps seemed better. WAZE now locks on almost immediately.

Gps lock concerns? If any.

Is anyone concerned on whether or not the phone will have issues locking on to your location? I currently have a samsung droid charge and the thing takes minutes to lock (talking 10 to 15 minutes at times). I'm aware samsung has had faulty gps with the first galaxy series as well, but haven't checked on their latest phones recently. Anyone know if the nexus s had any gps problems? Just hoping this phone won't suffer from the same problems as those other phones.
The built in barometer sensor will probably help.
Here's an article published by PocketNow:
Google Confirms Barometer Intent: Faster GPS Locks
According to Morgill, the intended use for the barometer sensor will be speeding-up GPS acquisition. We had mentioned the ability to gauge altitude via barometric pressure, but focused on its use in estimating altitude independently of GPS, saving battery life. Instead, Morgill says, it's to make initial GPS calculations go faster.
While it's easy to keep-up with GPS satellites, an initial lock-on can take a smartphone's GPS receiver a little while to make. Besides needing to wait to receive satellite constellation data from the GPS birds, the receiver needs to solve a complicated set of equations to figure out your location. One of those values it's solving for is your altitude coordinate, and if you already have a pretty good guess what it's near, you can speed up the rest of the equation-solving. Of course, you always could use the sensor for any of the uses we mentioned, given the proper app support, but this GPS-assist looks to be the primary motivation for the sensor's inclusion.

Even better would be to know that it uses the Russian Glonnas system as well as the US GPS sats to give double the number of possible sats to lock to. The Samsung Note uses Glonass and the Apple 4s uses both. Let's hope the Galaxy Nexus does the same.
I am hoping that after more than a year and over thousands of complaints Samsung got their act together and got that damn GPS working like HTC's devices.
The gps lock seems pretty quick judging from this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-yWgzoJXMA#t=9m41s
Nexus s zero GPS issues full stop!
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
The Galaxy S debacle gave Samsung a black eye they won't soon forget. Whatever the issue was though, it was solved when I got my NS about a week after launch. It locks usually in less than 5 seconds and has only lost signal a few times and has never failed to function for the nearly one year that I've been using it.
Yeah this was the only thing stopping me from pre-ordering the galaxy Nexus.
My Galaxy S Vibrant (T-Mobile) has a though usable GPS, it's complete garbage.
I remember driving down I-5 on my way down to Portland... it kept jumping in between local roads and the actual I-5.....
So I take it that GPS is fairly fast to lock and accurate? (keep in mind I don't use A-GPS since I have very limited Data)
very quick GPS lock and accurate from my attempts so far
Just stood outside in an alleyway between houses and got a lock in under 10 seconds !
Yeah mine has got pretty good GPS performance, although coming from a Galaxy S anything is better.

It literally locks in 10 seconds while outdoor and 20 while indoor. Really works well

Has there been any confirmation that galaxy nexus can use GLONASS satellites?
I've had no problems with gps so far.
sent from a galaxy far far away.
tested it right after the buy. i am a geocacher the fix was instant. Much faster than my Desire HD
Droid Charge (my dad and sister has one) can take several minutes or longer. My Motorola Triumph could take 5 minutes out in open area (pathetic)
Nexus, locked within 5s from within a bathroom first time ever using it, down to 10M accuracy.
Needless to say, I am very unhappy that it wasn't instant but I suppose I can live with 5s
Off Topic, I read that the galaxy note uses 3 different GPS systems, US/Russia and something else, so it's able to see about double the sats in the sky - anyone know if nexus is the same way?

How does the OnePlus 3 (and Oneplus as a company) Compare to the OnePlus One

My OnePlus is starting to crap out on me and I'm looking at a OnePlus 3 but I am woried. It seams like there's still QC issues at OnePlus. My first OPO had the yellow screen issue. My current now gets burning hot, its buggy, the power button is glitchy and the battery really craped out in a year instead of 1.5 years like my s4 before it. At OnePlus's price range it seams like they really cut cornors on things you will not notice until you had the phone for a while. I'm thinking I am going to wait for the new nexus but I will be in Shanghai this weekend and may pickup a OP3 if they sell international versions at their china stores.
The hardware is literally the same hardware as most flagships at whatever time. In terms of the Oneplus one, mine still works and flawlessly I may add. I also have a Oneplus 3 now and very minor issues. If I had to say the oneplus 3 brings back the first time they released the one feeling. It's truly a successor to the one (At least my opinion)
So far my only issue :
Bluetooth media buttons don't work in my car (That's literally the only thing I can complain about)

Not everyone's phone is created equal, even though they came from same vendor. My OnePlus one is still going on strong. No battery issues, no screen issues, no lag, etc... I bought mine on launch. Issues one may experience has a lot to do with how they use their phone also, so that has to be taken into consideration.
As far as the OnePlus 3, also purchased on launch and I couldn't be happier. Great phone, good battery, oxygen OS is doing much better than previous versions, and I use the dual sim to carry my personal number and my work number on one device (att/T-Mobile). I don't have Bluetooth button issues on mine like previous poster, it works fine. Only thing is every three days or so the recentre menu stops working and I need to reboot the phone. On current version oxygen OS 3.2.4

Coming from the Galaxy line of phones, with the note 9 being my last, I find no issues with reception or calls. No better or worse. I live on a fringe area and I lock on to LTE, although I get barely 1meg download at home. On a good signal area, download speeds of 25 to 50 megs is about what I get. I'm on an att mvno (red pocket), so no hd voice or wifi calling. But standard voice calls are ok.
On T-Mobile, I've actually seen nearly identical or even better download speeds vs my OnePlus 6T, which is surprising considering the power from the 6T.
I'm really stuck between both phones. I've always LOVED any OnePlus device I've owned. While I've used pixel devices before, this is the first one I've actively owned and used consistently, and I'm actually loving it. My OnePlus fanboy side is telling me not to give in... But I'm becoming a bigger pixel fan every second I'm using it
I just passed on my 6T today, I had held onto it in case remorse set in but that hasn't happened. I went from Tmo on the 6T to Fi on this phone and for whatever reason get faster speeds on this phone even though in theory I'm on the Tmo network. Go figure on that one, only thing I've got is that my 6T was the unlocked variant, could be a factor...
I was getting too many dropped calls.
Not just in my house, but all over.
Very disappointing.
I returned my 3a XL for this and a few other reasons.

I think this phone is awesome for the price. I sold my note 9 for a better camera and timely updates, and don't regret it one bit. But I do have some issues with the bluetooth behavior. When I turn on any previously paired speaker, the phone automatically assumes I want it to connect to it. This is annoying because every time I turn on the TV, the Pixel redirects sound output to it's sound bar. Also, when I connect to bluetooth speakers, music starts playing and then cuts off, and I have to redirect sound to the phone, then back again to the bluetooth speaker for audio to work. The second issue seems to be fixed on Q, but not the first one. It's just a minor annoyance, and not enough to ditch this phone, but never had this issue with any other phone. Other than that, I love my Pixel.

Question Who is happy?

Who is truly happy with there pixel 6 pro and aren't having any issues. I want to buy the pixel 6 pro but hearing so many negative things about it like fingerprint scanner , weak signal , Bluetooth issues and more
Me, sir! Rock stable since January update.
The biggest problem I had was occasional system UI crash errors, but that was it. Just an error without any noticeable impact whatsoever, and I'm not even sure if that's the phone's fault given that I'm rooted and have a bunch of things installed. I'm pretty happy.
I'm happy too. I have no issues.
I have it since about two weeks and I love it.
I come from a pixel 5 witch was a great midrange phone.
My battery is great, I have no WiFi Dropouts, cell signal is strong and the camera is great too.
I really like this phone and I don't regret the switch.
I'm on the edge. I switch for the camera and big screen but I mainly a Xperia 1 III for the headphone jack sd card and screen. Plus my head buds are Sony. Here is my deal with pixel. Bluetooth is spotty maybe it's me, signal drops a lot. My Sony headbuds are buggy only one works until I turn off Bluetooth.. battery is great. But I'm 6/10 happy with the pixel pro.
Just fingerprint sometimes doesn't want to unlock the screen and need to do the pin code and i think it's software because also smart lock is crazy sometimes.
Except this, all is fine since november. I didn't have issue with december FW and following updade. A rock !!!
No issues here, had pixel 1, 3 and now 6 pro, she's a big old beast but I love it
I think it would be useful if people mentioned what they are running on their Pixel. Stock, beta, some custom ROM such as ProtonAOSP.
I read many users stating that the A12L beta is more stable than stock A12.
Barely any issues here, and the ones I've had I figured out how to fix. I've been tinkering with the bits and pieces of android since I got my HTC Dream/G1 and telnet was all you needed to root. The issues we had to deal with back then would be unacceptable today. Bugs, bugs everywhere. Finding the limits, compatibility, and workarounds is the best part. I've had every nexus and pixel phone except the 5 series. They aren't getting worse, but the complaining is getting louder every year.
I've had mine since it was released and have not had a single issue with it. I switched back to my Note 20 Ultra for a week just for a change and the battery on the P6P is 2-3 times better. The only thing the Note beats the P6P on is the screen and brightness. Other than that I am completely happy with it. It's the 1st Google device I've had since the Nexus 6.
I'm very happy with my Pixel 6 Pro NOW (unlocked from Google running on AT&T, stock ROM, no beta, locked bootloader). But until the January update, it was an absolute hot mess, SO bad I *almost* switched to an iPhone after 12 years of being a loyal Android user. I had hardly any signal, no data connection in more than half the areas around where I live, it was incredibly buggy, half the time I locked the screen, it was corrupted (icons didn't show that were supposed to, did that weren't, fingerprint scanner wouldn't appear or respond), it would randomly freeze constantly. And doing something as basic as running YouTube music with Google Maps was a sure fire way to have to force close one of them.
Since the January update: just fine. Whatever conditions I have REALLY demonstrated the hot mess that was the initial release software. But since the update, it's been virtually flawless. Signal is back, data is back, virtually bugless. The delayed updates kinda bug me (I expect this for a long while), but so long as it keeps working as well as it does now, I'm actually very happy with it.

I'm curious because I don't get to ask very often in the wild. With access to the devices today, What's the point of getting a google device through third party vendors that add nothing of value and only make it worse?. Pulled out my old Galaxy S5 the other week and my Verizon version STILL hasn't been fully unlocked. That thing was a nightmare to keep useful.
id be happy if volte and 5G would work
I'm extremely happy. If you know me,or ask anyone about me,I rarely NOT grumble of a phone. I back the 6 pro. Was happy with 5G on,but, now I've turned off 5G and settled for 4G/LTE with way less heat and less battery consumption, don't think I'll be upgrading this year. I go through phones like nothing, but, I've had a good experience so far that makes me wanna keep this for a year..... Hell, maybe even 2

Who you helping with that comment bruh?
Happy user here
I'm happy on a fully stock 12L beta
I'm mostly happy with it. It seems a lot more stable with the February update. I've not had any WiFi or Bluetooth issues. That said, reception is a bit worse than the S22 Ultra I use. I do really enjoy stock Android and the ability to customize with root. If the reception could be improved and the updates pushed on time, I'd say the phone is rock solid.
I guess I'm picky because I've used the competition and can tell it's not entirely up to par in that area.

Question Flaws of the Pixel 6 Pro demonstrated when compared to S22 Ultra

I've used the Pixel 6 Pro on and off since November. For the most part, it has been a very good phone, but after using the S22 Ultra for over 2 months now, I realize how much better the P6P could be. The 5G reception, the charging speeds, and overall stability of the Snapdragon S22 Ultra are vastly superior to the Pixel 6 Pro. To be fair, the P6P has a cleaner software experience, better camera in some respects, and better speakers, but the essentials are done better by the S22U. Like many of us, I had hoped that the P6P would have been the Samsung flagship with stock Android, but it's turning out to have similar problems as the Exynos chips, even down to running warm. There are promises for big things in the June or July update, but each update has brought new bugs. I'm considering just selling the P6P and seeing if the Pixel 7 Pro fixes anything.

My girlfriend has the S21 Ultra, I have the P6P, andddd everyime I grab her phone I am surprised at how smooth it is. Every. Time.
I am getting pretty tired of having to borrow my wife's 22 when I need to make a phone call.
I had the s22ultra SD variant, sold it because if the crappy UI and micro stutters I experienced constantly. Regardless of the hardware, what good is it if the software is still in beta production.
A lot of gimmicky features like bixby, knox, etc.
Samsung has potential but they suck.
there is a 300$ difference between these two phones. the s22 ultra BETTER have the better experience.
I have to say otherwise, my girlfriend has the s22 ultra and I got the P6P, I wouldn't exchange it in a thousand years. Performance wise it stutters, quite a lot, to the point of semi freezing. Charging and battery wise we both get home more or less at same time with same battery, I've disabled adaptive charging tho. The stylus is not that impressive, not good enough for note taking. Everything else is meh, I love the purity of android and came a long way, no need for duplicate apps and super updates! Câmera also so so the same quality on both, but she has clearer night pictures (more realistic), pixel pictures at night seems to overwhelm the colours a bit.

Don't forget the shutter speed, Samsung constantly blurs moving things in pictures whereas pixel has no issue tracking pictures of moving objects and is virtually instant from pressing the button and taking the picture
There is no doubt, in my mind, that the Pixel blows Sammy away in every category, especially camera. But not in signal reception. Unfortunately I need my phone to make and receive phone calls.
I own both and spend time in a fallout bunker. My S22 Ultra and iPhone 13 Pro Max can make calls and text. The P6P has no service. The radio hardware is most definitely the P6P's Achilles heel.

Most reliable radio hardware I've had. Never had service dropped.
I used to have to have Tasker automatically cycle airplane mode whenever service was lost on all my prior phones, which were all Qualcomm flagships.

Don't forget the shutter speed, Samsung constantly blurs moving things in pictures whereas pixel has no issue tracking pictures of moving objects and is virtually instant from pressing the button and taking the picture

That's something else too. While picture quality is pretty good, the picture taking experience falls behind.
Hopefully most of the issues addressed can be resolved or mitigated through software updates, I hope, also for my own sake.

I agree with the signal reception. I have been working from home past 2 years, so I haven't had as much time to get frustrated, meaning using it while out and about. But this phone has the absolute worst reception of any phone I have ever owned and finding out just how horrible it is as I start traveling more. I am just outside metro DC area and have a lot of experience with other phones plus friends and family. Why, just why couldn't they have stuck with a trusted chip? Verizon, fwiw. I will eventually switch to something non Google. Other parts work great, but they call it a smartphone, not a camera connection device.

I agree with ya here, however, I'm on T-Mo. So, it's definitely a problem with the modem needing some very specific code changes. But thankfully enough, these changes have finally appeared to happen about a month back on a beta version of the OS. Now, the latest beta for Android 12.1 and the latest beta for Android 13 both contain modem updates that finally make my service more functional and reliable.
The only downside here is that they won't be pushing this update OTA for another month and a half (and it also took them a while to get to this, haha).

That would be fantastic if it really helps. I am in my house right now. My old Pixel 2 XL, Wife's Pixel 4a, my last Pixel 4a5g all had excellent service here. If I turn my wifi off I can't make a damn call. Today I was fishing at a pond that is in the middle of 3 major roads, had zero service. I will wait and see what comes from this. In your opinion, what are you thinking the change is, but I don't know how to ask you to quantify it.

Not sure. But I think that it has something to do with the general code requirements for this modem, as it was notoriously known for having reception problems in the past (as the Samsung S20 international variant used the same modem). It seems that Google was still recovering from the big lawsuit hit that dug into their phone development department's spending power before the Pixel 6 series had gone into production (was around $270M). I'm hoping that they are able to dig their way out of that hole by the time the Pixel 8 series is in production - as that will be around the time I upgrade my phone again, haha =P.

Did a software update solve the S20 problems? I did a quick search but not seeing that exact resolution. If that update in beta right now helps a lot they may save a customer here, but I am not upgrading to a future Pixel if they put a documented problem in this phone and the solution is to upgrade out of the problem.
I have owned both and they are both flawed.
I still have the S22U and ultimately it is IMO the better option. Yes the shutter lag is annoying and OneUI has it’s frustrations too but the flaws on the Pixel are bigger, FPS was a daily frustration (and the ultrasonic FPS on samsung is just better than all optical ones IMO) auto brightness was just dumb and as other have said the radio is weaker.
I am hopeful that lessons will have been learned with the Pixel 7
I have the vanilla S22, same with everyone says, it has micro stutter on the UI frequently, and the usual Samsung not able to capture moving objects. For those reasons, I am moving to Pixel 7 Pro this year.
To be fair, the P6 Pro is in another price league. You compare an Audi A5 to a BMW 7 (significant price difference). That still doesn't excuse, however, the especially weak reception quality and temperature problems (quick overheating under stress) on a P6 Pro. Basic features need to work, full stop. And Pixels struggle with that at times.
