Near perfect but an aggressive background app issue holds it back. Any advice? - OnePlus 7T Questions & Answers

I've had my 7T for about a week now. Its such a dang good phone. I love it. But I've one issue I'm looking for help with.
Apps that I expect to do things in the background don't work.
Example 1: Spottily is set to auto play when the bluetooth connects. On my Samsung as long as the app was in the background I didn't even have to unlock the phone. On the 7T I have to wake up the phone and bring the app into the foreground before it will start playing.
Example 2: I have an app that will let me download from instagram, it sits in the background and intercepts clip board links. Works great on my samsung but on this phone I have to switch to the app before it will do its thing.
Its as if its heavily throttling apps in the background and I've found now way to change that. Any advice?
edit: I have tried the following with no effect.
1. Tried locking the app in multitasking
2. Turning off battery optimization for the apps in questions

I have no such issues. Whatever app I want to keep running in the background is always running. I've had such an issue with my previous huawei phone, and the button mapper app. I don't experience any of those. I have a 7T HD1903 on OOS 10.0.8.

my experience has been either tgis function does not work at all or as i understood it to be. for instance in stock or modified, updated sense it just does nothing and only force killing an app makes it terminate and comes right back. similar experience in other non sense roms with feature. i use system tuner to remove apps from startup that are not essential and use kill app with back button available in roms that have the feature. the app terminates and does not restart until i restart it and i always kill it versus simply exiting the app.

[Q] Widgets not updating on home screen, no root or rom changes.

Hi, On 2 LG optimus G pro phones, the home screen widget items stop updating after some short time.
A phone rotation ( landscape portrait) does re-update the home screen and widgets, but is getting frustrating using that method.
Both phones are stock (AT&T), one has some minor OTA updating done, they are neither rooted nor rom changed. I have no intention at this time of rooting it or changing the rom. Please help with ideas that would work without these changes.
This behaviour has not been any different from a Factory reset , which I did prior to final installs. The issue was present from the first 3rd party widget to the phone having 16 switcher widgets and a few program widgets.
Are there any settings on the phone that would change this home screen from dropping off to sleep ? I am sure it saves battery, and might be the purpose of it, but it does not suit my purposes to have this happen.
I have tried many settings, like keeping core control off , etc. But i have not observed any change in this.
Is there any cheap tricks i can apply to get the home screen to run a refresh?
Is there any apps that could be applied to automate a home screen refresh? Like i am using macrodroid to automate other things, and it knows when i have made a widget switch, some app that would force a screen refresh would be a good workaround at this point.
The behaviour would hardly be noticed by somone using the device as a Phone first, and mostly as a phone. My use of the device is more like a Tablet, watching movies browsing the web and playing music and all.
When placing this question I was presented with many similar questions for other 4+ type phones, none of them were solved only Me-Tooed. Any ideas for workaround or cheap tricking the thing into refreshing would be very interesting to me.
thanks.
Tasker + Greenify would work but you'd have to be rooted in order to use Greenify on system apps. I had the same problem as well. I have tasker set up to hibernate my home screen when turning off the screen and waking it up when the device is unlocked. Adding widgets into that would increase your battery life AND keep the widgets working normally when you unlock the screen.

Interesting, because greenify updated rescent , so it can do its tricks without root (manually). applied the "accessability" trick on 4.1+ devices. If that would somehow work, it just leaves trying to automate it with some very simple method, so far i avoided tasker because it is more akin to programming (takes too long to learn nuances), where my level is more like simple scripting, which I got done in minutes with macrodroid.

GBWhatsapp being killed in background even with revelant settings off

The problem: GBWhatsapp, after the phone is locked for a while, gets its bg service killed, making it unable to receive messages (and Whatsapp Web from working) until I turn on the phone and launch it again.
I tried tweaking all revelant settings, as per this guide here from this post , even doing the hold-and-lock-app thing in the recent apps menu. Only thing I couldn't do, due to the setting not being there in MIUI 10, is turning off Memory Optimization.
After checking in the developer options ("Running services") it seems the process does in fact keep working, but the "MessageService" that usually runs is killed.
The problem is not with the GBWhatsapp mod itself, as in my previous Samsung phone it worked with 0 issues. Any idea on what to do? I'm tempted to just make an AutoMate flow that periodically launches GBWA.

The same heappend to me. You have to set energy optimization to no restriction and set the app to autostart.
I fell no downside on battery life.

Already done that, still not working, sadly. It was in the linked guide.
(Also not even starting the app when the phone is locked through automate seems to work dammit)

Well... Look into notification settings, permission... Give it all. Are you up to date on whatsappgb?
What rom are you using?
Rom is stock MIUI 10, and all notification settings are ok. Also gave it all permissions avaiable, and I downloaded GBWA from the website yesterday since this was a new phone.
same problem in realme phones..not getting online toast feature also..its workng old phones without any pblm..

Applications force close. Slowness in picture access.

Hello everyone
I have been experiencing force close after force on my Pixel 3xl. I ordered my pixel 3xl on launch day. A week after receiving my device I started to receive sluggish and force close after force in several different apps. I have never experienced android behaving this way. I started to notice that the phone would get sluggish when using Android Messages. When I am receiving an MMS message the phone will lag and then the message will come through. After messages started to act up, other apps such as; Flamingo for Twitter, Instagram and Google plus would force close. For starters I don’t run any app killers, or ram management. I thought the December Pie patch would fix the issue, but I still see it on a daily basis. I reset my phone, and less than a week later, I would see this same behavior. The phone is basically unusable. I contacted Google for an RMA. They processed it and the new phone is still acting this way. This is really odd this behavior would be happening to 2 phones. I have reset the new phone from google once. Not only is this behavior odd, but it would be really hard for me to believe I am the only person experiencing this issue. Thought about rooting it but don't know if that would even help.
Side note: I have noticed when in flamingo for Twitter or Android messages that the phone takes awhile to open or back out of a picture. Sometimes a white space will show near the upper part of the phone (both sides of the notch)
Any help would be appreciated.

Two phones exhibiting the same behavior? It has to be something you are adding (user apps and/or settings) as you set the phone back up. You said "less than a week later" you would see the same behavior- but that means for the first week it was acting normal, correct? Try running the phone in safe mode for a good while and see if the situation changes. If the issue goes away it will confirm it is one or more of your user apps is causing the issue. If it remains the same I would flash a factory image from fastboot mode and let the script wipe the phone (don't edit the script). This is different from a FDR (reset). Then when you set the phone back up add any user apps in stages, allowing a period of time between setting them up. Are there any apps you suspect? Any "non-market" apps? Rooting will not help you, so I would leave that variable out of it until you get the problem sorted.

I don't use Facebook or Snapchat, I know those apps are really tough on the ram, so I stay away from those. I don't install apps that aren't from the play store. The weird part is I've installed the same apps from my pixel 2xl. I don't install alot of apps to begin with. Ive researched people having issues with the Android messages app and there is a Google forum for this issue, however I installed Textra and I still see the issue just not as bad. During the last reset, I took days to install flamingo for Twitterand Instagram because I suspected them being the issue. Yesterday, I installed them and I started facing the issue. I uninstalled those 2 apps but the issue persisted. Now, it could be those apps but to me it would be a widespread issue if it we're those 2.

I still believe that because you experience this same issue across two different phones, it is something in your personal setup. No abnormal indications under battery usage or data usage (background or foreground)? As suggested earlier try running in safe mode for an extended period. If the problem is gone, you just work your way through the suspect apps until you find the offending one. You can also try resetting all app settings under System>>Reset options before resorting to a clean flash.

Think Nova launcher. Back it up, uninstall it completely, then see how it goes.
I agree has to be a user app, my 3xl doesn't exhibit this issue. My crappy banking app does this but its very poorly optimized. App devs need to catch up to 9.0

I uninstalled Nova Launcher and did see a slight improvement. The issue came back a few days later though.
What about safe mode?

It's not Nova Launcher. You mention slow picture access so I would be looking at apps in that direction. Any apps consistently FC more than others? Do you use cloud backup for Photos? Do you have any super large photo speres, panos, or RAW photos on your phone?
Edit: another thought would be to run a quick check on the non-Googly apps for "last updated" timestamp on the Play Store. You may be running an older app that hasn't been updated in years and is written with an outdated API.

The only apps force closing more than others are Android messages, flamingo for Twitter, and Instagram. It will start with Android messages, which causes the device to slow down, then the other apps follow by force closing. The device always seems to hang/lag when a group message is coming in. I only back up through Google photos on wifi. I combed through the settings and nothing stands out that could be causing the phone to force close these apps. For now, safe mode has the device working normal.

Question Freezing for a Few Seconds Since Last Update?

Anyone else have their Fold 3 keep on freezing for a few seconds at times, ever since the last update? It has done it when using Facebook Messenger via Chat Heads, opening the list of open apps (via the three lines button ||| ) to switch/close an app, Facebook app, Samsung Browser, tapping the back button, and possibly other times. Really annoying!
My screen will go blank when I close a app sometimes. The screen is powered on but all my app icons won't be there. Just the background.
I've had this issue since I got the device. It happens whenever I unfold the device from using the outer screen and it's not an immediate switch, it takes a couple seconds like it hangs. And I've tried 6 different launchers and tons of different apps and nothing changes it. I've debloated my device as much as I can without losing the functionality I need and followed the oneui optimization guide with a bunch of adb commands to make it better and I've had no luck BUT my battery life is amazing and the overall performance is good so I'm at a loss.

Oh, that's an odd one! I haven't had that one happen. It was getting frozen right after the opened app view came up, so I couldn't swipe an app closed or switch to another one right away.
Thankfully, the phone seems to be working better now after I reset the phone earlier, so here's hoping it stays that way.

I don't use the front screen much, so only have done that switch a few times over the year plus I've had the phone. I think it does take a second or two to switch, but not too bad since you're getting it set in your hands anyway, IME.
Okay, well it still does the freezing thing, but not as bad as it did before the reboot. I'd report it to Samsung, but their customer service can't understand English so can't understand problems correctly. I have an issue with scrolling screenshots not saving and they told me to reset my app settings, including network settings, and I separately gave a suggestion for the Bubbles feature to be able to open Bubbles (for texting) instead of waiting for that person to text me, and they told me to reset my network settings.
