Strange screen issue: blooming, lines, fading - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had this phone less than a year. Bought it new. There were zero screen issues before this. Not even a hint. And the performance is unchanged.
Yesterday, out of nowhere, I got something like a clear vertical woodgrain distortion evenly across the entire screen. Didn't drop it. It hasn't been through anything new or had new apps. It wasn't even overheated.
The distortion has since become more varied. Sometimes woodgrain-pattern lines (both even and irregular) and sometimes bloom. Sometimes the colors just fade (usually this has a mix of faded and non-faded vertical lines.
I've noticed that when I turn the screen on and off it usually clears up completely, then the screen issues start after only a minute or so.
I'd rather not have to go through the nightmare of the warranty process if I don't have to. Does anyone know what the issue might be?

[Q] Screen issues

Hey guys, I've been having some weird issues with my screen lately. I started noticing a lot of spots and weird lines all over my screen (they are dark, I don't really think it's light bleeding). In the darkest areas of the wallpaper, you can clearly see these random misshapen patches of black, is if my screen has bruises. You can see it really well in low light, and even better with nothing but the backlight on. I did some research and found out that many Galaxy S2 phones have that, all across carriers. I just wanted to know if anyone here had a similar issue and how they handled it. For now, I am planning to get this phone replaced.
So much for one of the best and vibrant screens on the market. What a waste of $230

Check if display is ok

Hey,
I got my Galaxy Nexus and want to know, how I can check the most common issues with my screen? Which are the most common issues? Which issue say that my screen is defective? Which "issue" is rather normal.
(I see little lines in grayer background, is that normal?)
Defective would e stuck, dead pixels on full screen colors brighter darker dots, but with this DPI you would need to strain a little to see one and one issue that I have seen from a friend is the screen started to peel off (I guess the digitizer from the LCD)they replaced his phone
Normal would be the persistent image that AMOLED has go to the market for example wait a little then scroll to the right and you can see lines on the screen for 0-2 seconds
Hope this helps

[Q] Can you describe the screen flicker?

Could someone please describe what the screen flicker means?
I don't have any of the hardware issues but I do have one problem. On very low brightness when I scroll in apps (like when reading an article in pulse) i get a very faint change in the brightness of the screen. It's like it goes a litter dimmer and then gets bright again. Happens everytime I scroll at low brightness. Is this the screen flicker people talk about?
I also get a few jagged lines on the screen, but that happens *VERY* rarely. I don't even know a way of reproducing them.
Would you say I have a faulty set? Or is mine fine and these issues should be fixed by an update. I'm still on 1.26. 1.28 hasn't yet rolled out in India.
I had posted this in another thread but thought it would would also help others if there was a separate thread for this.
Thanks.
The flicker is a slight effect seen mostly when the screen is showing a mid-grey colour. Like a shimmering.
I have a feeling it's related to the 58Hz refresh rate (it should really be 60Hz!). Not sure if it's hardware or software, but some users say they don't have it - though they may just not be seeing it.
Back when most people had CRT monitors, the majority of people I knew were happy with 60-75Hz screen refresh rate and saw no flicker. I had to have at least 80Hz or higher (preferably 85) otherwise the flicker was evident and became very annoying.
The flicker I see on my One X does feel like it's between 50 and 60Hz, but I have no scientific way to measure it.
Perhaps this flicker issue is difficult to gauge because some people are actually incapable of seeing it?
Don't watch this video if you suffer from epilepsy.
But go on a grey background, and you'll see a similar effect.

[Q] Warm vs Cold Phone and horizontal banding

I've had my phone about a week and the screen is fine when I'm inside. But I noticed on the way home from work (I walk from my work, about 10 minutes away) that the more I took my phone out, the more I noticed horizontal banding. It freaked me out a bit (I bought this phone from Swappa), but as I got back in a warm environment, the banding went away. Went back out for a run and it did the same thing.
My question is:
1. Is this normal behavior for AMOLED screens, for this device, or is it a defect?
2. Will this temperature change hurt the phone? I live in Wisconsin and odds are it's going to be cold a lot.
3. Should I get a snuggie for my phone?
Never noticed any banding, perhaps i'm not really looking for it.
Will look out for it when my phone gets back from the service center..
Take mine skiing all the time. No banding.

Well I've read up a bit on horizontal banding and i know it's common with this phone. But I've never had anyone say it's temp related.

I noticed this as well with my phone. I had horizontal banding all the time, but the banding seemed to be more pronounced when the phone was cold.
I returned it for a screen replacement under warranty and just got it back about a week ago. The banding is now gone and I don't see it when the phone is cold, either. I don't think the banding is normal but, if it is occurring, it can be made more noticeable when the phone gets cold.
Breaking news : the GN screen is crap.*
*there aren't any existing threads about it on XDA, not a single one. /s
When you say banding do you me slightly darker stripes (almost like shadows) or do you mean bright white horizontal stripes where no information can be seen.
I live in the north of Sweden and often subjected my old Galaxy S to -10 to -20°C. I would quite often see white banding or rows of white pixels. These always disappeared whed the phone was taken inside. The phone still works faultlessly today.
For me, the horizontal bands were linear "shadows" of lower screen-brightness alternating with linear areas of normal brightness. There is no loss of information.
After the screen replacement, I would say the screen is as nice as on any phone I've used. My last phone was a Nexus One, and the new screen is comparable in quality to the one on the N1.

Black Bleeding on Screen

So my screen is having issues when I scroll and I know this happens on this device. The question is do all the devices do this or is this just an issue with certain ones. Is my phone broke or will it be fixed with an update. The smearing is pretty bad and I notice it even with the brightness turned up.
Every OLED device I have has done it, but I haven't had an LCD device for a while. So I don't know if it's a characteristic of OLED screens or all screens. My last device was Samsung and had it pretty bad.
I'm having the same issue,
It bleeds/smears with dark/black color when used in dark i.e no light in the room.
I think it happens all the time, just that its visible and annoying when we use it in dark.
What did you do? Did you get it replaced?
Hi!
Same here... It seems normal, anyway with two years warranty if something is wrong with screen (black bleeding, burn in, ...) Google have to repair it or change the smartphone.
Regards!
It should only be visible in low brightness. It's normal for oled but the pixel 2 XL is a bit noticeable because Google set the gamma to high. So it can actually be improved through software.
If you see black smear etc during the day and any other time than maybe at night when the screen is at low brightness I would rma it
Seems like sensors are causing problem if move phone around in dark it will go away I have a case and tempered glass on phone
