I noticed as soon as I turned my Nexus on today that there was a line across the screen that looked like dirt under the display.
It is only noticeable on low brightness but the auto brightness set the phone to minimum when I turned it on so I saw it. I can only also see it on bright backgrounds like the forum - it is not visible on dark backgrounds or the home screens.
Does anyone else have this issue? I will return it soon and get it replaced but I am wondering if this is widespread or I was just unlucky.
Try turning the brightness right down and looking at this page and see if you see any lines/marks under the glass.
I have a line as well but it's quite small so I'm not really bothered.

Few very feint lines here too. Setting phone to fixed second lowest brightness setting and they vanish though.
This issue is on the gs2's too.

I can also see two faint grey vertical lines on either side of the screen if I have a light (white) background and brightness settings 1-3!
I haven't come across any other issues, I only noticed it after reading this thread and now its in bugging me. But I love the handset.. better than I expected!
Are these lines normal or do I have a duff handset? I have a couple of weeks to change it if necessary but I am also aware of the stock availability due to high demand.
Anyone else in same situation (O2 UK handset)?
I have the same issue on the lowest brightness, but not on the highest. It is also very faintly noticeable on my SGS2 on the lowest brightness. On my Omnia 7 (samoled) it is also very visible on low brightness, I think it is an amoled thing.

Exactly even the iphones with it's tinting issues SGS2 with it's Blotches in the dark
and the glass isn't perfect around the bezel
people just look for this stuff
I don't understood if this lines means defective screen or if all phones will have this lines.
I have the same thing on my Galaxy Nexus. I guess it's just a thing with Super Amoled screens, rather than a defect.

+1 Just as I said in my post above I have 4 amoled screen devices and they all it to some effect. Do not worry, your phone is fine.
could someone please post a picture so i can see what you guys are talking about? i'm curious to see what it looks like since i don't notice this on the samoled screen on my nexus s.
I had that issue with 2 evo screens. I would also get dead pixels or blotches.. Just have to get lucky with one I guess.

why is fine if it seems to have a problem?
do you think that it is normal to have lines on the screen?
can you tell for sure that every phone have that lines?
I have the same thing on minimum brightness. Its best seen by using a white image as wallpaper and having nothing on your far left and far right home screens. I have many vertical lines. When I scroll the home screen all the way over to the left until I see the blue gradient appear, the gradient varies in shades exactly where the lines are.
I noticed it as soon as i first powered on the device, same as the OP, as it was set to minimum brightness but I dont generally notice it any other time. I dont recall having the same problem with my galaxy S2
I got my galaxy nexus this morning and I have to say, this screen is awful. I'm not sure if it's defective or they are all like this. Everything was fine until I turned the brightness down. I loaded google.com up and the white on the page looked like it had colored dots in it. It's not white at all. After looking at it for a while, it appears to be some type of image retention? Do these type of screens get burn in? When I flip to landscape the area where the 3 bottom buttons are is worse in discoloration and I can make out the button images. It's not too bad but this thing was $700 and plus it's only 12 hours old... I don't know if I should return it?
Spray neutrogena sunblock on the screen...make sure its spf 100+!! No more burn! Oh wait!...

Other people have reported image retention too. It's 'normal', unfortunately.
I got it to my plan is to just wait a few months/weeks and wait until batches with perfect screens will ship then I will return my phone. So I get hopefully one with perfect screen. Trying to get one with a good screen now looks like playing russian roulette.

You might want to take a look at that thread. It probably is not burn in, but perhaps color tint and banding. (At low brightness, the whites will seem grey and have a sort of linen look to them. Many screens have also red/green discoloration.)

Long story short, get it exchanged - however, there is a high likelihood that the new unit will suffer from the same issues.
I exchanged mine and this one doesn't have blue streaks vertical lines or dots.

If you see vertical streaks in it, exchange it. My first GNex had some very noticeable streaks but my second one is fine. The 'linen' look on light backgrounds when the screen is very dim is going to be on all of them from what I can tell. That seems to be a quality of the SAMOLED screen used on the GNex. If it is uniform, then it's it no big deal and 'normal'. You should not have to put up with the vertical streaks, though.
Hello, I intend to buy the Galaxy Nexus but the problem of the screen burn-in scares me. When I buy a phone, it's for two years, does the problem still exists in the new series?

I know the ones at the store have this problem, but thats because they are full brightness all the time. I make it a point to use my phone in landscape clockwise, i.e. with pogo pins down, so the on screen buttons are on the opposite side as they usually are, and i haven't noticed any burn in. In low brightness conditions, you'll occasionally see some ghosting, but its not a big deal. They gave you extra blue pixels (rbgb), since those are the ones that are the weakest, to make sure your screen lasts 2 years.
had gnex since release date and had no problems with it what so ever, however, when bough had issues with screen itself e.g uneven colouring and banding (quite visible grey bars), replaced it and the model i got is fine so far...
I use most of the time my phone with middle brightness or minimum+screen filter during the night, as i don't use it at maximum, i will not get burn-in ?

I've noticed a very faint light blue-ish stripe on my screen (where the notification bar is) while reading text on a white background (in fullscreen).
Is that burn-in? If so, is it covered under warranty?

People say it is not burn in but uneven wear of the pixels. I know if read about people running a white background I think it was overnight on high and it will start to remove the marks. The idea is to run other colors to wear in the spot evenly as the top bar usually is only running black.
If you do some searching around in these threads you will read what others have done and what has worked.

I have this too, but calling it burn-in is wrong I think. Those pixels are black (i.e. turned off) most of the time, so they couldn't possibly be "burned into" the screen. Rather, the issue seems to be that they are getting used too little, so they are not worn in as much as the rest of the screen. Since all screens of this type change slightly over time as they get used, there is a small but noticeable difference in how these different areas of the screen display certain colors.

The app "Display Tester" has a burn-in removal function that some people have found useful.

How is the burn in factor any different than the great of the screens out there the gs3 epic vibrant you get the point aren't they all s amoled or amoled plus screens how would this phone differer with the burn in factor on the other devices

GN got a nav bar present all the time, and it will get burned in, most people don't realize though they have it.
Same goes for notification bar.
They need to be semi transparent to fix the issue which we don't have.
Even the browser doesn't remove the nav bar.
Only YouTube and full screen movies will show you that issue.
Hello everyone, today I've noticed that on landscape mode my GN has a lighter and brighter vertical line of pixels on the left side, if I turn the phone on the left; if I turn the phone on the right it doesn't happen and everything is fine on both sides. It is really annoying me and I can't say if it is the first time it happens or this kind of issue has been always there. It can be noticed only with white or light backgrounds and in EVERY photo, if brightness is switched to max it is hard to see but with automatic or half brightness is pretty clear.
I tried to screenshot it but I'm afraid this is something hardware since it doesn't show on screenshot.
Anyone else with the same problem?

I think I have the same issue. Don't know if I should go and get a replacement. It also only shows on white background while browsing.

Took it to assistance. It'll be back in 10 working days and since I don't have something not even similar to replace it I'm stuck with an old Sony Ericsson W205...what a nightmare!

At least you can replace it. I am from Israel and I bought the Gnex in the US directly from Google. I noticed this problem a day before I went on the flight so I didnt have much time to replace it. But it doesnt much bother me. I know that those Super AMOLED screen have too much problems... Just live with it right now.

I have the exact same issue on my Galaxy Nexus. The same row of pixels (along the top-edge). It's not visible in portrait mode because the notification bar is black and the pixels are switched off.
Here's the kicker: since this afternoon, the row of pixels are switched on even when the background is black. They appear as a faint line and become brighter when there's a background image. I put the phone under a magnifying glass and there appear to be three such rows, not one. It could be the pentile matrix playing with my eyes since the pixels are too small to see even with a (low power) magnifying glass, but there's definitely more than one row.
Anyone else?

Can you post or link a picture? I mean under a magnifying glass, just to see how it looks like...ehm not sure if it is possible though
I am having the same problem on mine too. There are these streaks that runs across in landscape or portrait. it's more noticable in a grayish white background. It's very easy to see with a screen test app that shows one color on the whole screen. Lately, I also notice the very top and bottom line of pixels like would lit up brighter. For example, when i touch the context buttons at the bottom, bottom pixels of the buttom would lit up bright white.
Edit: clariification, it's the same lines of streaks if held in portrait, it would go across. when in landscape, the same streaks goes to to bottom.
I also have a lighter vertical line of pixels on the side of the screen when in landscape. The interesting thing, though, is that it is on the left, regardless of whether my phone is in landscape with the power button on the top or the button. either way it's on the left of the picture. So I don't think it's a hardware issue. More likely a calibration issue?
I also have horizontal banding of slightly different shades in portrait on grey/white backgrounds (eg: facebook app). These become harder to see the more brightness I turn up.

Now I'm deciding whether to go to the Service Center....
Other than that small line, the phone is perfect so i guess i won't bother..

I got the entire screen replaced by Samsung Italy. 100% hardware issue
i have the same issue... but i think it is not "burn in", it is just a pixel line brighter than the rest, in my case it shows all the colors as it should, just brighter.

A couple of weeks ago I noticed the topmost line of pixels of my Gnex is miscoloured or brighter than normal, and yet sometimes displays correctly, usually when black.

I noticed it's on the bottom too. Maybe some backlight problem or something... But sometimes it changes colour due to shades changing, it's like in half shades it's shining more and in other half it's darker. Like some software compensating. There's other colours, but blue looks differently.
So my screen is having issues when I scroll and I know this happens on this device. The question is do all the devices do this or is this just an issue with certain ones. Is my phone broke or will it be fixed with an update. The smearing is pretty bad and I notice it even with the brightness turned up.
Every OLED device I have has done it, but I haven't had an LCD device for a while. So I don't know if it's a characteristic of OLED screens or all screens. My last device was Samsung and had it pretty bad.
I'm having the same issue,
It bleeds/smears with dark/black color when used in dark i.e no light in the room.
I think it happens all the time, just that its visible and annoying when we use it in dark.
What did you do? Did you get it replaced?

Same here... It seems normal, anyway with two years warranty if something is wrong with screen (black bleeding, burn in, ...) Google have to repair it or change the smartphone.

It should only be visible in low brightness. It's normal for oled but the pixel 2 XL is a bit noticeable because Google set the gamma to high. So it can actually be improved through software.
If you see black smear etc during the day and any other time than maybe at night when the screen is at low brightness I would rma it
Seems like sensors are causing problem if move phone around in dark it will go away I have a case and tempered glass on phone
