Pixel Launcher crashing after December security update - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

Hi,
Does anyone has this issue that after December security update Pixel launcher kept crashing and stop responding?
Thanks!

Just installed. Not happening to me
Edit: i'm seeing a lot of people reporting this issue, did u get a workaround?

Yes. the pop up "Pixel launcher keeps stopping" appears, eve rebooting the phone in safe mode.(Pixel 2 XL)

Saw a bunch of reports about this. Clean flash or factory reset fixes it.

Helpful hint... When the toast message pops up, hit app info. Tap the 3 dot menu and hit uninstall updates. That fixed it for me.
You have to be quick with the fingers, though. It's kind of like playing Whack-a-Mole.

Happened to me, this happens because of gesture navigation i guess went to settings changed navigatio. To 3 button and crash disappears didnt try to revert back to gesture system
Edit: reverted back to gesture system, crashes returns, so did like what @omniatic said above and it works now, also to mention i remember before i installed a modded pixel launcher apk which enables pixel 4 swipe down to show notification settings but now in dec. update it already brings this feature

I couldn't get to uninstall update that fast...and message persist in safe mode.
I ended up factory reset the device and issue was gone.
Sort of disappointed, but finally rescue the phone.

thanks a lot this helped me out

I did update yesterday and so far I don't have any problems. Hope it stays that way. BTW Google finally added swipe down to open notifications. ??

"Unfortunately, Home has stopped"

I am getting this error message essentially making the phone useless. I got notification I had an update on Friday. It auto updated, I installed it, it rebooted, and this message continuously pops up and I cant use anything. Factory reset did nothing, and the only semi work around is I was able to get Nova Launcher on there. It semi works but the message comes up every time I lock and unlock the phone.
Nobody seems to know the answer to what the hell this is or what happened but I need someone who is smarter than I to help me fix it please. Any advice is very much appreciated. Phone is unrooted.
Thanks in advance.
Go to setting, General, Apps, All Apps, and fine "Home". Clear cache and reboot.

tried that, it didn't seem to work. Is there something I'm missing? Do certain apps cause this?
Having the same issue right after updating to 6.0; clearing cache didn't work for me either. I suppose I'll try a different launcher in the meanwhile.
"Unfortunately, Home has stopped
I am now rooted using the video instructions from ROOT JUNKY, but I am getting this error message "Unfortunately, Home has stopped" I went to the Apps setting and resets app preference and also clear the home cache but to no effect. i am able to get the simple home setting but not the other advance home setting. please help if you can. Thanks inadvance
LG G4 H815
Problem solved for Lg G4. Go to Settings, General, Apps swipe left to "All" then scroll down to "HOME" not easy home. Open it and clear cache and also "clear data" you will get a warning message when you try to clear data, but that's ok. I was afraid to do this but it works for me, It will only clear and Home screen preference or shortcut you had. You can setup your preferred shortcuts after again. restart and select "Home" as your default. Let me know if this helps
Think not.. Still home crashes
Nope, that's not a fix. All it did was wreck my app placements and settings.. Nothing else. Immediately after clearing the cache and data it crashed exactly the same way.
Home has stopped is becoming increasingly annoying, and also increasing in frequency. I'm going to try Uninstalling the app update that started it all: Voice Mate 4.70.10.
I'll see if this works. If so I'll post here. If not, consider this an open thread and hopefully someone in the G4 community with some skills and knowledge will find a solution.
Anyone found a solution to this problem?

If you have an LG G4 you may have seen this message and waited for the home screen to re-start again, only to happen again and again, I’ve searched all the forums to no avail, so I installed another home screen to got rid of the problem, now have a permanent fix, you have to disable Smart Bulletins:
Go to apps, hit menu, select home screen settings, turn off Smart Bulletins.

Android 6.0 upgrade issues.....

So 6.0 shows up unexpectedly and at first blush I'm pretty excited. Unfortunately, that buzz was quicky killed when the upgrade caused all kinds of unexpected issues. For example, I simply could not get Wifi calling to activate which ultimately led to a factory reset. After months of finally getting my G4 to run perfectly it was like starting over again. 6.0 might be good for the developers and Google, but I'm not so sure it does much for the user.
Anyway, one issue I have not been able to solve is removing/changing the shortcut application icons from the lockscreen. Before 6.0 all you had to do was go to Settings > Display > Lock Screen > Shortcuts. That setting is no longer present!!?? Any ideas?
never mind!!
the issue is solved by first turning off any lockscreen security (you can use swipe effect only). Once you do this the device then provides the 'shortcut' option described above. Apparently, this isn't a 6.0 issue but something other users of the G4 have faced in the past. The 6.0 upgrade just created a bunch of shortcuts and I had no idea how to remove them!

I know for me, QuickMemo+ FCs on every boot and toggling between apps. I cleared cache, but no luck. I then did another factory reset, but still on every boot get an annoying pop up saying QuickMemo+ has stopped. Seems to happen much less on a different launcher, but still pops up a few times a day. Performing another clean wipe and re-install using the upgrade assistant. Will report back later on the progress.

Home and recents buttons not working

A very strange thing happens to me today.
My Pixel XL 128 (never rooted, with bootloader locked and running the lastest official Oreo) suffered a soft reboot when I clicked a YouTube link in the notification shade. After that, I ended up with home and recent buttons, not performing their actions. They still vibrated and the Home button kept the animation. The status bar did not showed notifications, even when they arrived (notification sounds continue to ring), and notification shade pulldown stops working. No mobile network either.
Has anyone else faced this thing?
I had to factory reset (through settings) to use my phone again.
The exact same thing happened to me today. I too am not rooted, all oem, 128gb too, have phone since January, upgraded to oreo several days ago.
Today, I was about to open an email from the notification shade, then the phone rebooted itself on its own, now after the reboot I am limited and can only use the back button. Home and Recents buttons are registering my touch (they both vibrate when I press them) but they don't do their jobs. And what's also strange is that before this happening I had 'vibrate on touch' off. Furthermore, I also can't bring down the notification shade past the first step where it shows the quick settings icons, and notifications no longer show up in the notification shade - it's always clear at the top. When I go into settings>developer options, it says 'this user has no developer options (something like that).
I went to Google's support chat via phone and they couldn't help me either, the same behavior in safe mode, only back button works. I asked support if they could help me troubleshoot the problem without having to do a factory reset and they ended up going down that street and said it's the only thing they could recommend to do.
Any recommendations?
Yep same thing has happened with me as well. I didn't factory reset but I did have to do a reboot for my buttons to work again. Also I get a lot of reboots when I'm using PiP for about 5 mins.

Exact same symptoms for me on a Nexus 6P with Oreo.
Same happened to me. Stock Pixel XL, 128GB, Oreo. Even applied the latest September update but no dice.
Do the "Nova Launcher" fix.
1. Install Nova Launcer. nb. Play Store not installing anything for me, so downloaded the apk with Chrome (google for Nova Launcher.apk).
2. Allowed from unknown Sources
3. Opened Nova from App drawer (or can set as default launcher).
4. Hold down on empty space -> Widgets -> scroll the bar across to Activities. Hold down and drag onto home screen somewhere.
5. Scroll down to Setup Wizard and hold down on "SetupWizardUpgradeActivity".
6. Complete the setup options and candy!

Interesting. That's fixed the UI issues in their entirety, and Developer Options are now available again too. And apps are once again downloading and installing/updating from Google Play. I wonder what on Earth got wedged and how? Bizarre.
Thanks again.
I got the same with my stock XL 128 seemed to just happen for no reason, after messing around with none of the bottom buttons working the square changed to two rectangles on top of each other as the screen went split screen again for no reason after that I could press the "recent" now split screen button to get the options up to select what I wanted on the second half of the screen when I canceled out of that everything was normal.
seems to be a problem with the picture in picture or the split screen, I don't know how I got into it or out of it but just messing around eventually did it for me. it did have me worried at first as at the time I was in google maps and couldn't get out or even use google maps, the bottom buttons reacted as if they worked but ultimately did nothing until the recent button changed.

Apparently it thinks initial setup is running (or maybe it is in background). During setup it stops you from pressing home, or switching apps, or doing anything of significance. I guess running the setup to completion clears that flag.

Same here: Needed reboot to get "recent apps" button working (although it did "light up" when i used it).
THANK YOU!
I've had a lot of Google phones issues lately and woke up to this and was getting ready to be annoyed all day. Super easy fix as I run Nova Full anyway!

You my friend are amazing. Google were absolutely useless, this fixed the problem and introduced me to Nova, double bonus
Thank you - Just the solution that I was looking for.
Thank you! I registered at xdadevelopers just to say that. I too did not want to do a factory reset and the change User to Guest option was not available. I also tried the enable screen lock to Pattern and rebooted.
Going to Nova Launcher and following your instructions to a T fixed the issue.
Grateful for your effort and time.

Hi, I've tried downloading Nova and Nova Prime, so desperate with this issue, I paid for it. Of course, it won't download, when I hit install, I get "install pending" or "downloading" this is going on for 4 days now. Please help!!!!
had my screen freeze again today with it being non responsive, it seems to be every time I leave chrome open and chuck it in my pocket, forcing the phone off and turning it back on fixed the problem this time, no clue what is going on with it as it only seems to happen with chrome.
You need to download the apk file through chrome, not through the google play store.
I have to say, thank you for posting that solution! I had this exact thing happen to my phone today, no idea why, but it sure was annoying!
All the same stuff happened to my Pixel XL original. Even lost "ok Google" spoken activation of assistant, and the night light failed to operate even though turned on in settings. Followed Google's advise and did the factory reset. Worked for about 3 days then bang, soft rebooted on its own while switching apps, and then all problems returned. Had the phone for just 6 months so Verizon sent me a replacement. Will see if it holds up. I told Verizon that if it fails again I want a Pixel 2!!!

Notification icons staying in status bar after clearing/viewing notification info.

EDIT 1: Resolved the issue by reverting the ADB command I used to hide the navbar. So if you have this issue as well and happen to have performed a hidden the navbar with an ADB command or using an app designed to hide the navbar, that is likely your culprit, as well.
EDIT 2: The only method confirmed to hide the navbar without causing notification icons to stick in the status bar, is to root your phone and edit the build.prop by adding the following line at the bottom of the file: qemu.hw.mainkeys=1

I'm experiencing a strange issue with my stock, unrooted Pixel 3 XL. When a notification comes in, I get the lockscreen notification like normal. Then I unlock the phone and swipe down on the notification drop down. I'll click the notification (Gmail message, for instance). I'll read the message in the Gmail app, which marks it as "read" within the app.
But when I go back to the homescreen, the Gmail notification is still in the status bar. It doesn't go away until I swipe down on the empty notification drawer for a second time.
This issue holds true for Hangouts, Whatsapp, Gmail, Outlook, Slack etc. etc. Pretty much any app that gives me a notification is experiencing this issue. I don't think it was doing it right out of the box. Just seemed to start happening within the last couple of days.
Anyone else seeing something like this?

same thing on my oneplus 6 after pie update
think it has something to do with the battery saving features.
Well, I'm glad to learn I'm not alone!
Hopefully the next update fixes it.

'Battery Saver' was already turned off on my phone. But 'Adaptive Battery' was on. I'm going to try turning that off for the day and see if that fixes it.
EDIT: Turning off Adaptice Battery and rebooting the phone didn't solve it. Status bar notification icons are still lingering. Pretty annoying.
On mine they go away after a short time on their own, it's the same behavior I had on 8.1 as of a couple monthly updates ago. I'm not sure that this is a Pie bug or I suppose, a bug at all. Anyhow, I'm not bothered by it, everything is the same as before except I can see the notification hasn't left the screen in the few seconds between when I dealt with whatever was there and set the phone down. Pick it up shortly afterwards and they're gone. Once I got over the mental "huh" of it and realized it doesn't affect anything it kinda settled into the non issue category for me.
Same damn thing. Even on my 2XL which wasn't rooted. Has happened since upgrading to Pie. Even before I started installing apps. There must be some setting we're all toggling that others aren't. Surprised this isn't all over the forums since it affects multiple phones.
I had this on my Pixel 2 XL for a day or so after a fresh wipe and setup, then it went away after some tweaking of various things. No idea exactly what fixed it. I was mainly messing around with battery optimization (on a per-app basis) and Tasker automations around the time it stopped happening.

I don't see this setting on my 3 XL. I know it was there on my OnePlus 6 though.
This happens every so often with my Pixel 2 on Pie
Confirming that even after the November OTA, the issue with notifications sticking still persists.
I find it quite ridiculous that given how many people seem to have this issue with Android Pie, regardless of whether it's a Pixel device or not, Google has yet to acknowledge or fix it.
I know some say it's related to battery saver settings but I've tried everything, including disabling all battery saver options completely and rebooting. The problem continues, no matter what. It's getting very annoying.
What's strange is that I never experienced this issue on my OnePlus 6, even after running Android Pie beta and full release for multiple months.

Ugh... I was just thinking about doing a full flash-all myself to start fresh with the November full factory image. After reading your comment, I think I'm just gonna go ahead and do it.
I'm just sitting around watching the election stuff anyway. So I might as well set things back up from scratch again.

General Home and Recent Apps gesture (and button) not working after Oxygen OS 13 update

I updated my OnePlus 9 Pro(LE2121_11_F.16) to Oxygen OS 13.0. But after the update, my home and recent apps gesture completely stopped working. I've rebooted the phone multiple times. I've also updated all my apps. I've cleared data for the apps - System Launcher, Gesture_motion Services and Gesture&motions. But none of it worked.
Factory reset

Thanks for your reply. Factory reset isn't always ideal. Really hope there is any other solution.
I had this on the second day of upgrade. Before that I had edited the quick settings tiles and frozen some OOS bloatware using Titanium. After clearing cache and rebooting multiple times, I tried undoing all the changes (restored the tiles to the initial state and thawed all the bloatware). Nothing happened immediately, but after an hour or so it was fixed, I don't know how. Maybe just coincidence. Anyway mentioned it here in case it works for you.

likewise, I think its because we edited the tiles as I clearly remember I just did that and the next day it stopped working the notification settings icon, back and recent apps. So if we factory reset and edit the tiles again will it reappear (the issue)?
I had the same issue but mine happened after finishing the setup. I lost internet at my house an couldn't compete the setup it said it needed wifi. So I went on with my day and that night I finished it and had this issue. After that I couldn't fix it. I had to do a factory reset and then everythings been working fine. I think it's an issue with the upgrade.
May 2023. OnePlus 8T f16 update.. it's still happening. Anyway to get it to work without factory reset? Ive tried Nova launcher trick, clearing settings, clearing data from apps for gestures launcher etc, reboots, reverting the tiles. Any other methods to make it work?
Hi,
I have the same issue with my OP9, but strangely enough, it only happens with third-party launchers. When on the system launcher, everything's peachy, but if I use another launcher as default (regardless of what it is, Nova, Microsoft, Lean, you name it), the Home button starts acting out again.
I can tap the Overview button, or the Back button, though, and with a third-party launcher, Gesture Navigation will work OK, more or less.
Maybe OP/Oppo don't like us using third-party launchers after all...
There's a new system update based on Oxygen OS 13.1 (LE2115_13.1.0.5..(EX1)) that seems to have solved the problem somehow.
Security Update dates back to April 2023, though...
EDIT: using Hyperion Launcher, the issue is still there and seems to occur when you are two levels or more deep in an app. For example, if you open the Play Store app, go to your apps and try to update them, you can close the app with the Home button. However, if you open Settings and dive down into the various menus more than three times, the Home button stops working.
