So I just noticed that I could not search for contacts through the main google search bar. It was weird since this is how I always do it. So I thought that maybe the contacts option was turned off. I went to Google settings/general/personal results and the weird thing is that it doesn't have all the standard search option to choose like contacts, music, websites, etc. It only shows one thing for apps. The only thing that I did was enable developer options. Does anyone know how to get these things back? It's annoying as hell not being able to search and having to use individual apps to do so.
Well, I figured it out. Had to uninstall Google assistant and updates to get it back
yeah, them removing it is frustrating.. i did find a thread a while back that it now shows a contact page, but thats if you type in the full name pretty much.

Hi all,
I'm trying to work out exactly what "Clear on-device search history" actually does.
I selected it once, in an attempt to clear the search bar widget, unsuccessfully, and it's been greyed out since. It has had no effect on the search bar, online web history, browser, etc. Doing some searches, reboots, etc hasn't caused this option to become available since.
Forum searches have turned up nothing, and there's only 2 results on a Google search relating to it. So if it doesn't seem to clear the bar, what does it actually do?
To find the option: Press the search bar > 3 dots menu > Settings > Google Search. It's listed in there.
Also, if anyone has worked out how to clear the bar, please do tell I found a thread that referred to the Privacy menu in the 3 dots (still under search) but it only lists "Searchable Items" and "Google Search".
Thanks,
GDog.
GNex 4.0.1 Australian, no updates available.
TL;DR: what "Clear on-device search history" does?
You clear the search bar by going in the browser settings and clearing history.

Thanks WayneB, however for some reason it isn't effecting the home-screen search bar when I clear it there. When I clear it in the browser it solves the browser search history, but not the one on the home-screen.
I've now just realized that there is a two-fold thing going on in this bar I'm not understanding properly. If I let the phone sit for a few secs, I get a set of 'X's next to the entries so I can clear the web search entry. this is fine for most of the issue that I have.
The ones that I'm unable to clear appear to be the 'on-phone content' results (e.g. contacts/music) that are appearing in the history. I hadn't realized that they were also in the list, and while the web searches cleared, these ones didn't.
I've managed to work out what was up with the "Clear on-device.." option being greyed out, it only functions when the Web Search options are disabled. Disabling Web search caused it to pop up active again. Answers that question at least.

Something about ICS makes me feel like a muppet. I'm fine with 2.0-2.3, I've cooked my own roms and all, but I seem to get lost trying to find simple things on 4.0... I'll grow into it eventually...

Thanks for the help
Picture cards (from wikipedia) are not showing in Google voice search. Is there any way to fix it??? Or are there any settings that i'm missing out on? And i'm currently outside US so can it be the reason?
Unfortunately you are right, in your setting, set it to search on google.com, (Google now, settings, privacy and accounts, tick the box), then you will get pictures. This used to break local searches, but they seem ok now =]
How do you remove teams from Google Now? I go to the settings, see the teams I want to remove and remove them. I exit Google Now, go back into Google Now and the teams I removed are back again. I have tried removing any searches for the teams in my web history but that did not help. Any ideas?
Are you using the stock ROM? I deleted a team the other day and it has not come back, and I haven't cleared my search history yet either.
This is happening to me too. After only searching for these two teams once, it automatically added itself to my Teams in Google Now. I have never searched either team again. I went in and deleted them both from my Teams because I didn't want the notifications. When I go back to Google Now settings and check in less than a minute, both teams will still be removed. But about a day or two later (or possibly just when the next game is), I get the notification again and both teams are back on my Teams in Google Now. This has been going on for about a week now and I've removed them about 3 or 4 times.
I haven't tried clearing search history because I like having my search history other than having searched these two teams once.
I am using the stock rom. Android version 4.1.1 on the Galaxy Nexus.
Exact same problem as the two other posters That San Jose soccer team better be worth my notifications and Google Now space. I've even removed it from my web history but it still persists.
I had that same problem when searching for San Jose, but I removed it from the Sports list and it's gone. Well, if I'll get a card I'll know.
Removing the search history should remove everything from Google Now. You can do it via Google account just to be safe.
Oh god, whatever you do, don't add some random soccer teams in an attempt to trick it or wake it up or something like that. I now have something like eight teams, all impossible to remove. Ugh.

I am running CM10.
Ive had this issue as well.. For me it is barcelona and sacramento... i dont even like soccer lol... i think it wont delete because of having two Google Now devices and not deleting it off both... so I did them both at the same time and am going to see if it comes back
I think i figured this out. I have 3 JB devices syncing to my google account.
I did this on each device.
1. Go to the sports settings for google now
2. Remove the teams i wanted to remove.
3. Turn off google now
After turning off google now i work on the devices in reverse order
1. Turn on google now
2. Refresh the goggle now page
And that fixed it for me on my gs3 n7 and touchpad
Just follow biggggant's post. To reduce the impact on Google Now, in step 3 instead of turning off Google Now completely, you can just turn off the Sports updates in Google Now and turn it back on again.
Ashaman's mod had the option to re enable universal search in Google Search. I prefer being able to use search to search for apps, contacts etc. I'm wondering if there is any to not have it show results by default when opening search. For example, when I open search, it'll show most people contacted and my last searches. I rather it didn't.
I cleared the data under app management and that seemed to do the trick. Except as soon as I searched for something that same list was back. Any way to get rid of it?
The other day I did a hard reset. All is back to normal with the exception of one thing. I no longer have a search history on the phone. When I click the search bar at the top of the home screen, none of my past searches are there. When I go into the search settings, the "clear on-device search history" is greyed out.
I do have my google account set to have my web history paused, but I don't think that is the same as my search history on my phone.
Is there a setting that I'm overlooking that needs to be turned on or off? I 've looking everywhere on the phone I can think of and no luk. I know it did save my searches before the reset.
Side note: I noticed that the google search app is no longer in the play store when I search for it via the phone, but it's installed on the phone. I do know that my tablet running official jelly bean does have search history and the search app shows up on the play store with that device.
Thanks for the help.
