The other day I did a hard reset. All is back to normal with the exception of one thing. I no longer have a search history on the phone. When I click the search bar at the top of the home screen, none of my past searches are there. When I go into the search settings, the "clear on-device search history" is greyed out.
I do have my google account set to have my web history paused, but I don't think that is the same as my search history on my phone.
Is there a setting that I'm overlooking that needs to be turned on or off? I 've looking everywhere on the phone I can think of and no luk. I know it did save my searches before the reset.
Side note: I noticed that the google search app is no longer in the play store when I search for it via the phone, but it's installed on the phone. I do know that my tablet running official jelly bean does have search history and the search app shows up on the play store with that device.
Thanks for the help.

When I use the Google Search app, I just want to type a few letters and find whatever app/contact/etc I want to find. I hate having the history shown every time I search for something. Is there anyway to disable it completely?
I want to know this this also

Go to the Market and get an app called HistoryEraser. Cleans up a lot of other cached stuff too.
Disable google search history online
I occasionally clear and turn off or on my search history in my google settings. This can be done through mobile device's browser, or on PC. Launch browser and log onto your google (you can start through gmail, for example) account through any PC browser. Go to your google settings and clear all or whatever search history you want, and you can set history to "off" if you want. When you launch your browser on any other device PC, phone, whatever) log onto google account again immediately and you should see that your browsing with same history settings continues regardless of device used, until you specify new change.
Final detail: After setting your account preferences for history I'm not sure how this would work in non-stock browser if you're not logged onto your google account.
Hi all,
I'm trying to work out exactly what "Clear on-device search history" actually does.
I selected it once, in an attempt to clear the search bar widget, unsuccessfully, and it's been greyed out since. It has had no effect on the search bar, online web history, browser, etc. Doing some searches, reboots, etc hasn't caused this option to become available since.
Forum searches have turned up nothing, and there's only 2 results on a Google search relating to it. So if it doesn't seem to clear the bar, what does it actually do?
To find the option: Press the search bar > 3 dots menu > Settings > Google Search. It's listed in there.
Also, if anyone has worked out how to clear the bar, please do tell I found a thread that referred to the Privacy menu in the 3 dots (still under search) but it only lists "Searchable Items" and "Google Search".
Thanks,
GDog.

TL;DR: what "Clear on-device search history" does?
You clear the search bar by going in the browser settings and clearing history.

Thanks WayneB, however for some reason it isn't effecting the home-screen search bar when I clear it there. When I clear it in the browser it solves the browser search history, but not the one on the home-screen.
I've now just realized that there is a two-fold thing going on in this bar I'm not understanding properly. If I let the phone sit for a few secs, I get a set of 'X's next to the entries so I can clear the web search entry. this is fine for most of the issue that I have.
The ones that I'm unable to clear appear to be the 'on-phone content' results (e.g. contacts/music) that are appearing in the history. I hadn't realized that they were also in the list, and while the web searches cleared, these ones didn't.
I've managed to work out what was up with the "Clear on-device.." option being greyed out, it only functions when the Web Search options are disabled. Disabling Web search caused it to pop up active again. Answers that question at least.

Something about ICS makes me feel like a muppet. I'm fine with 2.0-2.3, I've cooked my own roms and all, but I seem to get lost trying to find simple things on 4.0... I'll grow into it eventually...

Ashaman's mod had the option to re enable universal search in Google Search. I prefer being able to use search to search for apps, contacts etc. I'm wondering if there is any to not have it show results by default when opening search. For example, when I open search, it'll show most people contacted and my last searches. I rather it didn't.
I cleared the data under app management and that seemed to do the trick. Except as soon as I searched for something that same list was back. Any way to get rid of it?
I've exhausted my search efforts on both Google and the Forums and either my search terms are too vague or there simply isn't a thread out there which addresses this issue.
My Google Now on my N7100 is now insisting on redirecting all searches to an external browser, whether it be the Popup Browser, Stock Sammy Browser, or Chrome, depending on which I decide. Every time I do a search with Google Now, it always pops up the chooser. It didn't do this before. I recently uninstalled Chrome and before that searches were always completed inside the Google Search app and then all links would go to whatever default I would choose. Now, it always insists on performing the search through whatever Browser I have chosen as default. I tried reinstalling Chrome, but that didn't make a difference.
Is there anyway to get the Google Now searches back to being performed in the search app, and not forced to an outside browser?
So I just noticed that I could not search for contacts through the main google search bar. It was weird since this is how I always do it. So I thought that maybe the contacts option was turned off. I went to Google settings/general/personal results and the weird thing is that it doesn't have all the standard search option to choose like contacts, music, websites, etc. It only shows one thing for apps. The only thing that I did was enable developer options. Does anyone know how to get these things back? It's annoying as hell not being able to search and having to use individual apps to do so.
Well, I figured it out. Had to uninstall Google assistant and updates to get it back
yeah, them removing it is frustrating.. i did find a thread a while back that it now shows a contact page, but thats if you type in the full name pretty much.
