I have known that battery life has been a long been a problem with Android smartphones, but this wasn't much of an issue for me, as I am almost always within arms reach of an electrical outlet, and now that so many of my friends are on an Android smartphone, we all share chargers.
Well that was probably a bad idea (umm, duh!?!?). I have since used no less than 6 different chargers (HTC stock, LG, Motorola, Samsung, and 2 different generic no-name), and have since found that my charging port has become a bit picky. It now requires a bit of wiggling and and sometimes some sort of careful balancing act to connect to a charger. Not sure which of the different chargers caused this, but I was wondering if anyone else has seen this happen?
Also, would this qualify under a warranty replacement, or should I just file an insurance claim?
Any help and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure that is somewhat of a known problem with some Evos. I have seen quite a few threads on broken charging ports and USB not working properly. I have never had the issue, so never actually checked the threads out. If you search on here or google 'Evo broken charging port" or something to that nature, you should find some answers. I'm not sure if that would get your phone replaced in store or if you'd need to file through insurance. Either way, I wouldn't tell sprint that you were using all different chargers on it, although that shouldnt matter anyways.
Im actually on my 3rd. evo. 1st one: the charger/usb port broke "internally" and with sprint TEP i went into the repair facility and they gave me a new one right there! In and out in less than 15mins. That one later fell into a now I have this one which works fine. Point of story... if ya got TEP then take it into the store unless the water stickers are red then your screwed.
Could be just the actual charger, my evo wont charge on my car charger anymore I have to put pressure on the charger port to get it to charge but at home my htc charger (the cable) work and my cable from mono price works to charge it as well.
Use your charger or find one that works and stick with it.
I rooted a friends EVO yesterday that had this problem. He didn't give me his charger, so I used my stock charger on it. On my Evo the charger works perfect. On this one I had to wiggle and jiggle the charger around in the phone and then hold it just right to get it to connect to my PC. It was a real pain in the a** to get it to stay connected and even lost connection a couple times in the middle of the rooting process. Luckily I ended up getting it rooted and installed MIUI and all is well, but yeah this is a know problem with Evo's. I would take it to Sprint and see if they will fix it. Unroot and return to stock first though.
Hey guys, i'm starting to think that my USB port is broken. I've been tethering my phone to my desktop for the past month but recently i've been having spotty connections to the computer. then today my computer tells me the USB device has malfunctioned whenever i plug it in, i've tried 2 different cables and 2 different computers, as well as CM7 and nitsuj's vanilla gingerbread rom but still no luck. the phone charges fine, but i need to have a pc connection.

I recently was having the same problem and it started getting progressively worse. Called Verizon and got a warranty exchange. My biggest concern was that the USB would stop working completely and then I wouldn't be able to restore it to factory. Luckily when the new one arrived I had it downgraded and rooted and the old one back to S-on all in about an hour.
I would have to "wiggle" the cord around in various positions until I got my computer to recognize it. Once I got a good connection I had to be careful not to even breathe on the cord or I would lose the connection.
I've always felt that this is a weak link for the DInc2...
Yeah mine has progressed to where the phone has to sit in a very particular way overnight to charge. I haven't had time to take it to Verizon to have them take care of this issue.
It's either that damn ribbon cable or the cable that I got with my Dark DIncII that was so tough to pull from the jack that I thought I was going to pull the jack right out of the phone.
VZW corp store said at first that it will get looser with time.
Now I see what he meant.
At the time I showed him how it did similar to my 2 year old Fathom.
He said well that's an LG for you.
I said get me a cable please. OK
The replacement cable fit much better in both devices.
I still switched it with my wife's DIncI cable, Well seasoned.
With the Red DIncII the cable was re designed with a relief on BOTH sides of the plug.
It's still tight, but it doesn't remind me so much of the time when that damn nurse pulled my catheter out of it's position with 5 of the 15 cc of fluid still in the locking bulb. *****...
Any way it,s a known issue (The Cable) that has prompted attention to a re design of the cable at least.
I will look into locating the ribbon cable and or jack complete.
Because the Red DIncII has the issue with a rattle in the area of that jack only when the back is removed.
And I am not about to exchange my otherwise MINT phone for a warranty refurb that will no doubt encounter similar issues.
If not more, according to what I have been reading about the ones getting sent back to VZW.
I rooted with full intention of keeping what I have and not getting stuck in the revolving door of refurbs..
Yes I am happy with self service, within reason.
Has anyone that gotten a replacement unit gotten a refurb?
As in just the unit without battery or door and plain brown box.

So I saw the disclaimer for the HTC Hero, however this is a completely different device / manufacturer (Besides, it's Google ).
I was charging my phone over night, like I usually do. However, when I woke up, I noticed that the phone wasn't charging and sitting at around 70%. So in the dark, I was plugging and unplugging the cable (You know, the fun things you do when you first wake up). After about 3 tries and seeing the device not even registering to being charging (Using the 'high pitch squealer' black charger cube that came with it), I turned the lights on. Noticed burn marks around the connector that goes into my Phone. Pulled the Cube out and that was the end of that.
Later in the day (when I came home from class), I contacted my Carrier (Rogers) and told them. They apologized for the inconvenience (a melted cable on a potentially flammable surface is an inconvenience >.>). They basically told me to go back to Cellcom and replace the unit. After this, I contacted Samsung, who actually, to my surprise, simply didn't care. The now damaged unit now shows up as USB 1.0, but this depends on the angle of the other USB cable.
The "tl;dr" is:
- Burn marks around USB connection to my Phone.
- Cable no longer functions. See the cable as to why, the one (and potential 2nd) ground pin has melted bits surrounding it them.
- Damaged Unit
- Samsung told me basically it's not their problem.
Pictures of the Cable. I can't really get inside my unit without voiding the warranty so there are no pictures of that.

Wow that sucks, I would expect the odds of that happening are pretty slim. I am surprised that samsung didnt care. I'd like to hear their reasoning behind it not being their problem. I am even MORE surprised that Rogers did care since they can very easily say that since they didnt make the phone that it isnt their problem to deal with and to contact samsung.
Wow , that sucks dude. I haven't seen that happen to a galaxy nexus yet. (It happened to me with my nook tablet, but that's a different story lol). The actual micro USB slot in the phone isn't burnt is it? If it is , you may want to just invest in an extra battery and external wall charger if you can't charge with another micro USB .( thats what I do, I haven't actually charged my nexus via USB since I got it). But if I were you , I would absolutely raise some hell with the carrier you bought it from until they give you a new one. I cant see how this could be your fault .

I have charged mine on the one provided, a different samsung charger, car charger from my Droid X dock, BB cable, and blackberry charger. Never had a problem. Sorry to hear that.
Holy crap. I had the charging problem that is a "known bug" until I realized that the cable that came with my phone was defective. I have half a dozen other Samsung cables around so it was no big deal to swap the useless cable and throw it away. But the thought of a defective cable causing a fire hazard situation is worrying.

In answer to your question: I found this thread by searching for an explanation after my port and cable just now burned up while I was using the phone. Started to smell something funny, and then heard a crackling noise from the phone while seeking the source of the odor. I can only imagine what might have happened if I had been asleep in the other room rather than holding it in my hand when it happened! Not cool, Samsung.
The specifics: I was using the cable that came with the phone and the stock battery, but plugged into a multi-port USB charger. The information here helps my confidence that the problem wasn't my charger, thank God. I say that I can only imagine what might have happened because the loud crackling and intensifying burning smell gave me the distinct impression that it would have burst into flames if allowed to progress much further in the process. Also, the first symptom was failing to show it was connected to the charger, and one of the things I tried was unplugging it and plugging it back in (to a different port of my charger.) The charger doesn't seem to be malfunctioning or damaged, but the cable and port are similarly scorched. The phone made the same crackling noise immediately when connected to a different USB cable and stock charger (for a split second.) And other than that my phone is still working, now on the extended battery that was charged on an external charger; it's what I'm typing this with.

Holy ****! That must of been a scary sight, and especially waking up to a smell of that. I am glad now that I have the landscape dock that I use for my charging purposes. I think now I will be extra cautious to plug in a usb cable into my phone and if I need to transfer any files I will either be using bluetooth (for the small files) or using ftp file transferring over wifi.
If I were in your shoes I would be calling Samsung to tell them about it and to see if they can take a look at it to see what was causing it and perhaps replace it.
I'm not entirely surprised by their lack of concern. My efs on my Nexus S corrupted on the stock 2.3.4 OTA. They not only would not fix my device but claimed it had corrosion on the circuit Printed Board Assembly and that was the issue and voided my warranty.
I've had the PBA inspected by a buddy of mine who all he does for a living is repair electronics, and the PBA has zero corrosion on it. My IMEI still comes and goes as it pleases on my Nexus S still to this day. Sometimes it returns after a few reboots with no SIM in sometimes its over a month and everything in between.
The point being is that when you own a phone they don't really care but when my TV broke they cared and fixed it immediately and sent someone to my house.
Good luck man I'd call and raise hell if you can't get a reasonable person to help you. The Galaxy Nexus hotline from the Play Store also deals with Galaxy Nexus devices not purchased from them I believe, at least there's an option for people who didn't buy them from Google in the menu when you call. Same thing here. Phone just stopped charging. I pulled the USB cable because I smelled burning/fire/smoke.
I looked at the USB plug and it was charred on the inside, as was the phone. Just... wow.

so literally a few minutes ago i plugged in my charger into the wall and smoke came out of the microusb side and then from smoking went to burning, i just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem and to warn you guys so that you dont plug it in and it burns your phone

This happened to me yesterday. Samsung does not care. Google does not care. Samsung wants me to send in the phone, no replacement, said the repair would start at $70. Seems unlikely I will be buying another Samsung device. Tempted to avoid all future Nexus devices too.
I just purchased this unit. is it normal that the Stock Cable is Hard to Plug on the Charging Port of the Phone..
i need to try so many times before i can plug the charging cable to charging port of the phone before i can plug it successfully. i'm thinking of breaking the charging port if this is the case? Anyone who have the same concern? Thanks

I noticed this as well. hopefully if something gets broken its more likely to be the connector on the cable than the charging port. I have tried a few other cables as well and all are pretty difficult to insert.
Well the way I see it would you rather have it flop around and be loose, or have a night tight fit?
On a more serious note I had the same issue when I first recieved my F400S. After a week or so it got better, you can always try an older micro usb cable thats more broken in to avoid this issue.
when i first got the phone it was like what you've desribed. but after a while, it wasn't an issue anymore, i guess its a good sign that the phone is brand spanking new.

It requires a downward angle tilting towards the device to insert.
Same for me, but once you're using qi charging and Wi-Fi file transfer, you'll hardly ever use the port.

Only way to get it in is by tilting the cable downward. Tried few cables, they are all doing the same thing. Exchange perhaps?

Tilting the cable to plug in seems to be the norm on pretty much every G3. I doubt exchanging it will help.
Once you've done it for a while, it should become pretty easy to do.
Tilting the cable and just dealing with it are fine, but what happens when you stay finding usb cables that don't want to charge your G3 properly? I have one (very nice) 10ft cable and my phone plays a game of connecting and disconnecting while trying to charge with this cord. This courts does not give me the same problems on other devices. However the G3 charges just fine on all my other cables. Not using this cable is an obvious answer but i worry that the problem could get worse and what if I start having problems with other chargers?
For now, the solution is to tilt the cord slightly downward (or upward, depending on your perspective) as the port is just sliiiiightly more flush with the opening. My advice is to get used to doing this. A broken charger port is really a PITA, so taking an extra 2 seconds to plug it in is the prudent choice. My dad gave me a lot of good advice when I was growing up, and one of the gems turns out to be "don't force things."
As mentioned, once we get some wireless charging back covers on a more accessible basis, we'll all just use wireless charging and never plug in again. Except in the car.
The cable from my old GS4 plugs in very very easily. I haven't tried charging with it tho. I use it mainly for usb mtp.

Difficult at first. It did get better for me though. I too thought i had damaged it or that it had shipped that way. And I also thought I was just breaking it more each time I charged and contemplated exchanging LOL. Make sure cord is facing the right way first (im still trying to put it in upside down sometimes), then you do have to tilt it down a bit to get in initially and then it tilts slightly up before fully inserting. It was very diificult to do the first couple days. Day 5 and its way easy. Hope this has helped and put your mind at ease This is my first Android phone and i'm luvin it!
the past new phones i had. was always hard at first to plug it in.

Any new updates on this? I guess tilting the cable a bit is working, but will it ever get to the point it will go straight in? It really appears that this is not a defect but a LG design for the port.

I agree with what was previously stated, after a week with phone, I've become used to putting the cable in. I'm pleased with the tight fit as I've had devices where it feels loose and unsecured.

Hey so i had my charger plugged in after having trying it on someone elses phone, but it said moisture detected in their phone. I plugged my phone in a little later and noticed a smell a few minutes later and came back to a powered off, warm phone with a hot cable.
Phone works, charging cable no longer fits all the way, and phone wont charge. Any idea what i can do ? Pretty sure warranty is done since ive had this phone since it came out. Is there an easy way to open it up and replace the port, ive replaced the camera lens glass in the past and dont mind getting dirty.

Check with Google and ask them if they can help you out. You'll get a definitive answer as to whether you are still in warranty or not. Regardless of the answer however, you will need to send the device to them for servicing, as while you could use an iFixit teardown to open up the P2XL and replace the port, it's very likely that the really tiny surface mount components in the charging system were also damaged with this mishap.
The charging port on this phone is absolute garbage. I swapped a phone out because it would no longer hold a cable in the port. The slightest touch to the phone would make the cable unseat. Im having the same problem on the 2nd phone
And ever since i upgraded to 10 the phone charges SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO slow unless im on a google quick charger where i think its just charging normally
