I have known that battery life has been a long been a problem with Android smartphones, but this wasn't much of an issue for me, as I am almost always within arms reach of an electrical outlet, and now that so many of my friends are on an Android smartphone, we all share chargers.
Well that was probably a bad idea (umm, duh!?!?). I have since used no less than 6 different chargers (HTC stock, LG, Motorola, Samsung, and 2 different generic no-name), and have since found that my charging port has become a bit picky. It now requires a bit of wiggling and and sometimes some sort of careful balancing act to connect to a charger. Not sure which of the different chargers caused this, but I was wondering if anyone else has seen this happen?
Also, would this qualify under a warranty replacement, or should I just file an insurance claim?
Any help and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure that is somewhat of a known problem with some Evos. I have seen quite a few threads on broken charging ports and USB not working properly. I have never had the issue, so never actually checked the threads out. If you search on here or google 'Evo broken charging port" or something to that nature, you should find some answers. I'm not sure if that would get your phone replaced in store or if you'd need to file through insurance. Either way, I wouldn't tell sprint that you were using all different chargers on it, although that shouldnt matter anyways.
Im actually on my 3rd. evo. 1st one: the charger/usb port broke "internally" and with sprint TEP i went into the repair facility and they gave me a new one right there! In and out in less than 15mins. That one later fell into a now I have this one which works fine. Point of story... if ya got TEP then take it into the store unless the water stickers are red then your screwed.
Could be just the actual charger, my evo wont charge on my car charger anymore I have to put pressure on the charger port to get it to charge but at home my htc charger (the cable) work and my cable from mono price works to charge it as well.
Use your charger or find one that works and stick with it.
I rooted a friends EVO yesterday that had this problem. He didn't give me his charger, so I used my stock charger on it. On my Evo the charger works perfect. On this one I had to wiggle and jiggle the charger around in the phone and then hold it just right to get it to connect to my PC. It was a real pain in the a** to get it to stay connected and even lost connection a couple times in the middle of the rooting process. Luckily I ended up getting it rooted and installed MIUI and all is well, but yeah this is a know problem with Evo's. I would take it to Sprint and see if they will fix it. Unroot and return to stock first though.

Wife's phone usb port is broke. It got mangled by a tough cord pull. It can't be straightened out. plastic is broken and contacts are mangled. After I did some research, I can see this issue happens on quite a few phones with micro usb such as the evo, but i have not seen too many people mention it about the g2.
Anyways, no warranty since I got the hardware from craigsist. Even if there was a warranty htc has not been covering this sort of damage on the evo.
From what i can tell there are a couple of possible fixes and a workaound.

Ah that sucks. From what i think if you know how to open the g2 then you wouldnt have a problem with fix 2 only thing i say is dont F..k up the motherboard lol... yoll have a fully broken phone. Dont know about fix 1.

If you don't need a working micro USB port for connecting to your computer, just pick up one of those power mats that charge your devices by just placing them on the mat.

I looked into the powermat product last night. As far as I could tell, it seemed like they didn't have one for the G2. In that case, they provide a workaround, but it sounds like it also requites a working port of some sort.

After reading that, it stops sounding wireless at all. The universal powercube is wireless to the powermat, but it needs to attach to the handset with a cord. Pretty silly for $100. maybe there are other companies besides powermat?
I found a great thread about sanding chintech batteries. I ordered the two pack plus charger and will peel and sand them. So for now, I will use the external charging workaround.

In the meantime, if anyone else has a broken usb microport issue, post up your experience here. The issue seems rampant in the evo's, but maybe not so much on the G2. It is a heck of a small plastic tab in there holding the contacts.
Or get one of those 2 batteries + 1 charger deals on ebay and charge one while you're out and when you run out of battery just swap it. That's what I do and I think it's a hell of a lot more convenient.

I have the same problem, except my micro usb connector still functions very testily. I have to plug and unplug it several times, and the slightest of jostles will disconnect it. Charging is more reliable than tethering, and I definitely use tethering, as I don't have a wired broadband connection at home. I'd love to get this repaired, if it's not too costly or difficult, so I'm going to watch this thread. Thanks for the suggestions on getting an external charger and extra batteries. If my connector continues to deteriorate, it makes me feel very relieved to know I'll have a backup. Thank heavens this phone has an sdcard slot!
Tethering and file transfer can be accomplished over wifi with some apps. Look for wireless tether and the samba or ftp apps
This is planned obsolescence at its worst. The switch from mini-USB to micro-USB doesn't save any space and makes the plug VERY VERY delicate.
Personally, I would take it apart, unsolder the micro-USB socket from the board, solder in a new MINI-USB socket, and reassemble. It is relatively low risk, as long as you are careful while soldering (use proper desoldering wick to disassemble). Be sure that you don't use too strong a soldering iron -- about 15 watt, and be sure to use one that is GROUNDED (three prong plug).
Thats some good advice. I was not aware you could swap out the interface in that way.
It's actually not quite that simple to change interface. You would first need to find a mini-USB connector having the same alignment pegs (to help with strain relief) and pad spacing as the current micro-USB connector. You will also need to hack the chassis of the phone some as well (and even then, a mini-USB connector will still probably stick out slightly).
Despite what was stated earlier, although both mini-USB and micro-USB have about the same width, mini-USB connectors are significantly thicker (or taller) and slightly longer (as far as depth). Micro-USB actually does give a pretty nice space savings for a hardware designer and can be more robust in design depending on the actual connector used.
Probably easier to just try and find the same connector HTC used if you are going to go through the trouble of replacing it.
I like to know all the great advise I was also worried about this when I just had the EVO. But to transfer files you could use a sdcard slot adapter for your pc or one of those usb sdcard readers I had used that when rooting my g1 along time ago LOL. Thanks for the backup ideas

Thanks, soreyes I already use the wifi tethering now and then, but it really drains the battery and makes the phone very hot. In fact, I accidentally left my wifi tethering on overnight the other night and woke up to a dead battery and a radio that wouldn't work for half the day. I was actually worried I had fried my phone and turned it into an expensive PDA. After turning it off for about 8 hours, it worked fine again, thank goodness.
I definitely hadn't thought of FTP or samba for file transfer, but thanks for the suggestion. I hate taking out the battery to get to the sdcard, just to transfer a file or two.

I started having charging issues a few months ago, before my warranty ended, but now, I'm screwed and the phone will not charge at all. I know it is not the battery.
I have a G2 from T-Mobile. I took it apart and it looks like the job to get the port off and replace it would not be simple.
Has someone actually completed that task?
Does anyone have the part number on the port? I see several very similar ones on ebay. (search for microUSB and android)
Or, has someone sent theirs off to be fixed out of warranty? I've seen a place called Mission Repair mentioned here and there on the web...

I know I sent my itouch off for screen repair and it was worth it.

You might consider buying one of those G2's on eBay with the broken screen, and swapping out the motherboard, then along with that you'd get all kinds of other spare parts, including battery etc.
I've never taken apart the phone, so can't attest to the difficulty, but I've seen a few guides around.
Update on repair options
So I called a local shop and they said that it was too complex of a procedure for them and referred me to Mission Repair in KS.
Called Mission and they said they get several calls a day from folks with G2's/Evos/and Desires with this exact problem. The guy said that in 80% of the cases it is not fixable without replacing the logic board because the issue is often that the logic board connectors break. This is a known issue with these similar HTC phones.
On the other side of things, I called HTC and it turns out these phones have a warranty from 15 months of manufacture, which T-Mobile did NOT inform us about. They said they will take the phone and fix it for free if i hadn't voided the warranty.
Now if only I hadn't open the phone up after the T-mobile rep told me there was no hope. *arg*
Hey guys, i'm starting to think that my USB port is broken. I've been tethering my phone to my desktop for the past month but recently i've been having spotty connections to the computer. then today my computer tells me the USB device has malfunctioned whenever i plug it in, i've tried 2 different cables and 2 different computers, as well as CM7 and nitsuj's vanilla gingerbread rom but still no luck. the phone charges fine, but i need to have a pc connection.

I recently was having the same problem and it started getting progressively worse. Called Verizon and got a warranty exchange. My biggest concern was that the USB would stop working completely and then I wouldn't be able to restore it to factory. Luckily when the new one arrived I had it downgraded and rooted and the old one back to S-on all in about an hour.
I would have to "wiggle" the cord around in various positions until I got my computer to recognize it. Once I got a good connection I had to be careful not to even breathe on the cord or I would lose the connection.
I've always felt that this is a weak link for the DInc2...
Yeah mine has progressed to where the phone has to sit in a very particular way overnight to charge. I haven't had time to take it to Verizon to have them take care of this issue.
It's either that damn ribbon cable or the cable that I got with my Dark DIncII that was so tough to pull from the jack that I thought I was going to pull the jack right out of the phone.
VZW corp store said at first that it will get looser with time.
Now I see what he meant.
At the time I showed him how it did similar to my 2 year old Fathom.
He said well that's an LG for you.
I said get me a cable please. OK
The replacement cable fit much better in both devices.
I still switched it with my wife's DIncI cable, Well seasoned.
With the Red DIncII the cable was re designed with a relief on BOTH sides of the plug.
It's still tight, but it doesn't remind me so much of the time when that damn nurse pulled my catheter out of it's position with 5 of the 15 cc of fluid still in the locking bulb. *****...
Any way it,s a known issue (The Cable) that has prompted attention to a re design of the cable at least.
I will look into locating the ribbon cable and or jack complete.
Because the Red DIncII has the issue with a rattle in the area of that jack only when the back is removed.
And I am not about to exchange my otherwise MINT phone for a warranty refurb that will no doubt encounter similar issues.
If not more, according to what I have been reading about the ones getting sent back to VZW.
I rooted with full intention of keeping what I have and not getting stuck in the revolving door of refurbs..
Yes I am happy with self service, within reason.

So I saw the disclaimer for the HTC Hero, however this is a completely different device / manufacturer (Besides, it's Google ).
I was charging my phone over night, like I usually do. However, when I woke up, I noticed that the phone wasn't charging and sitting at around 70%. So in the dark, I was plugging and unplugging the cable (You know, the fun things you do when you first wake up). After about 3 tries and seeing the device not even registering to being charging (Using the 'high pitch squealer' black charger cube that came with it), I turned the lights on. Noticed burn marks around the connector that goes into my Phone. Pulled the Cube out and that was the end of that.
Later in the day (when I came home from class), I contacted my Carrier (Rogers) and told them. They apologized for the inconvenience (a melted cable on a potentially flammable surface is an inconvenience >.>). They basically told me to go back to Cellcom and replace the unit. After this, I contacted Samsung, who actually, to my surprise, simply didn't care. The now damaged unit now shows up as USB 1.0, but this depends on the angle of the other USB cable.
The "tl;dr" is:
- Burn marks around USB connection to my Phone.
- Cable no longer functions. See the cable as to why, the one (and potential 2nd) ground pin has melted bits surrounding it them.
- Damaged Unit
- Samsung told me basically it's not their problem.
Pictures of the Cable. I can't really get inside my unit without voiding the warranty so there are no pictures of that.

Wow that sucks, I would expect the odds of that happening are pretty slim. I am surprised that samsung didnt care. I'd like to hear their reasoning behind it not being their problem. I am even MORE surprised that Rogers did care since they can very easily say that since they didnt make the phone that it isnt their problem to deal with and to contact samsung.
Wow , that sucks dude. I haven't seen that happen to a galaxy nexus yet. (It happened to me with my nook tablet, but that's a different story lol). The actual micro USB slot in the phone isn't burnt is it? If it is , you may want to just invest in an extra battery and external wall charger if you can't charge with another micro USB .( thats what I do, I haven't actually charged my nexus via USB since I got it). But if I were you , I would absolutely raise some hell with the carrier you bought it from until they give you a new one. I cant see how this could be your fault .

I have charged mine on the one provided, a different samsung charger, car charger from my Droid X dock, BB cable, and blackberry charger. Never had a problem. Sorry to hear that.
Holy crap. I had the charging problem that is a "known bug" until I realized that the cable that came with my phone was defective. I have half a dozen other Samsung cables around so it was no big deal to swap the useless cable and throw it away. But the thought of a defective cable causing a fire hazard situation is worrying.

In answer to your question: I found this thread by searching for an explanation after my port and cable just now burned up while I was using the phone. Started to smell something funny, and then heard a crackling noise from the phone while seeking the source of the odor. I can only imagine what might have happened if I had been asleep in the other room rather than holding it in my hand when it happened! Not cool, Samsung.
The specifics: I was using the cable that came with the phone and the stock battery, but plugged into a multi-port USB charger. The information here helps my confidence that the problem wasn't my charger, thank God. I say that I can only imagine what might have happened because the loud crackling and intensifying burning smell gave me the distinct impression that it would have burst into flames if allowed to progress much further in the process. Also, the first symptom was failing to show it was connected to the charger, and one of the things I tried was unplugging it and plugging it back in (to a different port of my charger.) The charger doesn't seem to be malfunctioning or damaged, but the cable and port are similarly scorched. The phone made the same crackling noise immediately when connected to a different USB cable and stock charger (for a split second.) And other than that my phone is still working, now on the extended battery that was charged on an external charger; it's what I'm typing this with.

Holy ****! That must of been a scary sight, and especially waking up to a smell of that. I am glad now that I have the landscape dock that I use for my charging purposes. I think now I will be extra cautious to plug in a usb cable into my phone and if I need to transfer any files I will either be using bluetooth (for the small files) or using ftp file transferring over wifi.
If I were in your shoes I would be calling Samsung to tell them about it and to see if they can take a look at it to see what was causing it and perhaps replace it.
I'm not entirely surprised by their lack of concern. My efs on my Nexus S corrupted on the stock 2.3.4 OTA. They not only would not fix my device but claimed it had corrosion on the circuit Printed Board Assembly and that was the issue and voided my warranty.
I've had the PBA inspected by a buddy of mine who all he does for a living is repair electronics, and the PBA has zero corrosion on it. My IMEI still comes and goes as it pleases on my Nexus S still to this day. Sometimes it returns after a few reboots with no SIM in sometimes its over a month and everything in between.
The point being is that when you own a phone they don't really care but when my TV broke they cared and fixed it immediately and sent someone to my house.
Good luck man I'd call and raise hell if you can't get a reasonable person to help you. The Galaxy Nexus hotline from the Play Store also deals with Galaxy Nexus devices not purchased from them I believe, at least there's an option for people who didn't buy them from Google in the menu when you call. Same thing here. Phone just stopped charging. I pulled the USB cable because I smelled burning/fire/smoke.
I looked at the USB plug and it was charred on the inside, as was the phone. Just... wow.

so literally a few minutes ago i plugged in my charger into the wall and smoke came out of the microusb side and then from smoking went to burning, i just wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem and to warn you guys so that you dont plug it in and it burns your phone

This happened to me yesterday. Samsung does not care. Google does not care. Samsung wants me to send in the phone, no replacement, said the repair would start at $70. Seems unlikely I will be buying another Samsung device. Tempted to avoid all future Nexus devices too.
I don't know what happened. Phone was fine this morning. Went to work. Got out and my battery was around 30%. Plugged it into the charger and immediately noticed the batter wasnt giving me the charging animation. Unplugged, replugged. Nothing. Switched micro usb wires. Nothing. Connected to my PC.. NOTHING!! I did notice that when plugged in the phone became very laggy and unresponsive. So I thought maybe it was the rom/kernel. I was running BlackEdition ICS. Booted into CWM, backed up and flashed juggernaut. Still the same thing. No USB connection or charge detected and the phone becomes laggy and basically unuseable. Anyone got any ideas?
Just tried USB storage mounting through CWM and nothing. **** my life.

Dude I'm not even getting a charge animation while the phone is off. Seems like the port is completely dead but the things been in my pocxket all day. It's been funtioning properly except when the USB cable is plugged in. I noticed that it's not really lag... more like the touchscreen loses most of its touch detection. Anyone got any ideas?

Sounds like a bad cable to be honest, but if you tried different cables then it's hard to say.
AllGamer had the exact same issue and thought it was the USB port, but it was his cable.

Ok so I jiggled the wire inside the phone a bit and nothing. Took your lint advice... blew really hard in both the phone and wire. Oddly enough.. its working. **** you line. SAMSUNG Y U REMOVE SLIDING USB PORT DOARZ??????? One thing I definitely miss from my Epic 4g. Thank you guys. REally appreciate it. I was starting to think that the phone I just bought off someone on craigslist Thursday was already done with.
On my third GS2...
This may or may not be pertinent to your issue... I'm on my third (yes, third) Galaxy S2 T989 from T-Mobile. The first two stopped responding to USB input after three weeks or so. This was irrespective of which cable I used, which charger (the original OEM Samsung charger/cable as well) it was connected to or whether I "blew" into the USB port (old school Nintendo style).
Whether this issue is prevalent with this model is unknown, T-Mobile has been less than forthcoming with information about the handsets I returned. I've received no word from T-Mobile on my warranty-return handsets on what the issue was... but I told them in no uncertain terms that my next support call for this issue would be to another carrier (and a different handset, though I absolutely like the GS2).
Before I get flamed for not providing enough information or the troubleshooting steps I followed... I'll state that I'm an engineer (albeit mechanical) with a second degree in computer science and I took appropriate measures to ensure that the issue was the actual USB port on the handset. NOT the USB cable, NOT the charger, NOT the battery and NOT a software reporting issue. Aside from a lack of functionality, each handset was indistinguishable from brand new condition... no fluids, no drops, no abuse and no cheap USB cables used.
I could speculate on the cause for this issue, but with a device less than one month old, it's definitely a quality-control issue (whether for the USB connector source or Samsung if the part is sourced in-house). My current handset has lasted nearly five weeks without issue... fingers crossed.

This may or may not be pertinent to your issue... I'm on my third (yes, third) Galaxy S2 T989 from T-Mobile. The first two stopped responding to USB input after three weeks or so. This was irrespective of which cable I used, which charger (the original OEM Samsung charger/cable as well) it was connected to or whether I "blew" into the USB port (old school Nintendo style).
Whether this issue is prevalent with this model is unknown, T-Mobile has been less than forthcoming with information about the handsets I returned. I've received no word from T-Mobile on my warranty-return handsets on what the issue was... but I told them in no uncertain terms that my next support call for this issue would be to another carrier (and a different handset, though I absolutely like the GS2).
Before I get flamed for not providing enough information or the troubleshooting steps I followed... I'll state that I'm an engineer (albeit mechanical) with a second degree in computer science and I took appropriate measures to ensure that the issue was the actual USB port on the handset. NOT the USB cable, NOT the charger, NOT the battery and NOT a software reporting issue. Aside from a lack of functionality, each handset was indistinguishable from brand new condition... no fluids, no drops, no abuse and no cheap USB cables used.
I could speculate on the cause for this issue, but with a device less than one month old, it's definitely a quality-control issue (whether for the USB connector source or Samsung if the part is sourced in-house). My current handset has lasted nearly five weeks without issue... fingers crossed.

Yea i feel that brother. Im thinking my issue was lint causing a short somewhere in there. But id def be nore than angry in your place.

I've yet to hear of this issue being widespread, and collectively my family has 3 of these devices. That doesn't mean it isn't a huge problem, but it's more likely you got unlucky. Some people have bad luck regarding electronics. My brother is a MechE too and has fried more laptops, monitors, hard drives, and cd drives than I can count.
Im glad it was just lint dude. Surprised that my idea was the issue.

I've had my G4 since almost launch day and within weeks the supplied USB cable stopped charging the phone. I thought it was a cable problem, but it worked fine with other devices.
I tried other cables with the G4 and these still charged it so I thought nothing more of it until charging degraded with every USB cable I own to where the phone would only charge 20-30% during an overnight charge and the phone would frequently not recognise it was plugged in at all. I contacted LG who did a repair under warranty and all was fine.
I've now had the repaired phone back for about 3 weeks and the same problems are starting up again and it's only a matter of time until I am forced to return again for a repair.
Is anyone else having similar problems? I thought I may have just had an unlucky manufacturing problem, and the LG reps confirmed that to repair my phone they basically replace all the internal circuit boards and components rather than just replacing the individual component that is faulty (in this case the USB/charging port)
Basic debugging includes asking stupid questions, so please forgive but still answer any of those
Are you using a different charger? If so, check if that one is within specifications and if you do send in for repair again, use a different charger.
Are you propping up the device at an odd/weird angle or in a dock of some sort with the cable attached?
(As they replaced the entire print, it's probably not this, just the USB-micro port bent or broken.)
You could double check the wall outlets being used, there might be some kind of electrical problem there.
Either using all kinds of fancy electical testing gadgets, or stick a USB light into the hub or charger, does it flicker?
When sending it back for repairs, did they check the stock charger as well?
Hopefully these questions help you find any logical or plausible cause.

1. I am using the standard charger that came with the phone, but this has not been repaired/replaced. I have tried other chargers too, but all the same issue.
2. No weird propping up or anything like that. If I hold my phone while it is plugged in it is constantly vibrating as the charger connects and disconnects, and if I place it on the desk to charge I have to ensure that I have at least 3-4" of cabe "on the desk" to give it enough support to make the connection.
3. Wall connection is fine and I have tried it with a range of outlets around the home, both with extension sockets used and plugged directly into the wall and there is no different. No flickering light when using a USB light either.
4. When I sent it back all they asked me to return was the main section of the handset - so no battery or rear cover, no cables or chargers etc
It does seem to be the same issue as last time, a USB connection becoming loose from the main motherboard, but it seems weird that I have had the same issue twice in the space of 4-5 months.
I've been having some sort of problem with my G4 usb port. If I plug it in to a computer, it will lose connection and get a connection again if I barely touch the end of the cord at the phone end. I've tried many different cords and different usb ports on my computer, but it still has problems.
I can't fast charge, either. When I plug it in to fast charge, it actually starts discharging even faster. I've had some extreme battery life problems, too. It drained from 100-36 the other night with everything disabled, and it's been doing that kind of thing a lot lately. I'm guessing that the charging port is what's messing up my battery life because it won't charge correctly.
Never dropped it or anything.
I got my G4 on January 24 and my USB port has also failed. I am getting a replacement from Verizon, but am concerned that a six month old phone has this issue.
I also own a G4 H815. A while ago the phone started not receiving any charge from the cable and I would have to prop it up from right under the cable's micro usb end. Thought it was because it was bent inside the port and not making connection with the cable so I had the port replaced. Now I'm experiencing the same problem and I think it might be the cable that's already gone kaput and is effing up the port itself. I took the phone to the same place to get the port replaced again and bought new cables (I lost both the original adapter and the cable, which were charging slow anyway. Now using a 2A Asus adapter which works great) and when I asked the guy at the repair shop, he says it's a chronic issue with G4 devices. I don't really understand how it would happen twice in just a few months even with a new charger port. What should I make of this? Did they replace my port with an already faulty one, cahrged me full price and now trying to sell this bogus or am I really doomed with this phone?
