[Q] Root De La Vega on T-Mobile Note 3 question.

Hello,
Seeing how future updates to the Note 3 supposedly causes the knox warranty void flag to be tripped for rooting with RDLV... Is it a good idea to root our devices now while we can? As in, rooting before one of these updates will both keep root on the device and have knox warranty flag 0x0 after updating to kitkat?

Bumping! I suppose it would be easy for Samsung to release an update that triggers knox counter if root is detected... I've never rooted a device though. So my question is do phones keep root when you receive an android update?

If you are rooted, you normally don't want an update over the air. There so far have been no updates to the T-Mobile version of the note 3 though.

Well I was wondering about that as well. I keep reading that the Tmo Note 3's bootloader is unlocked. If it is truly unlocked would it not matter to take updates as we should be able to continue to root and put a custom recovery back on the phone? I mean i personally would wait to know if it is safe to take an OTA before actually taking it. I came from the VZW S4 which had that crazy locked down bootloader after the 1st OTA (I luckily never took an OTA and it's on the original FW). I mean I guess they can always lock down a bootloader on any OTA but why would they if it came already unlocked?

All the ota does is download via wifi or data for the update...that is the only difference... it doesn't do any extra checking or anything like that. The only thing that will happen is after the update has been downloaded it will flash your phone and then it will erase root because it will be flashing the phone back to a stock new firmware. You then would have to root your phone again.

If you are rooted and you accept an OTA or KIES update or if you Odin flash official
stock firmwareyou will lose root but you can root the phone again if you want.
Fortunately all the cwm/twrp flashable custom roms found here in XDA
all come pre-rooted and if you flash one of those you will not lose root.
Either way you will trigger the KNOX if you flash kernels, custom roms or custom recoveries.
The only two things that KNOX does is it prevents you from downgrading to an older version
of the rom and or firmware as well as the possibility of voiding your warrany if you have one.

How to update to latest firmware (and keep root) after rooting?

Hello, this is my first android device, so I'm not too experienced with the whole rooting thing. My device is currently rooted with the original firmware that came on it. (Galaxy Tab S 10.5) not quite sure which version is on here or even where to find out. I tried to do an over the air update and it wouldn't let me because the device is rooted, but apparently there is a new firmware version out, so I definitely want to get on that.
How do I go about getting the latest firmware installed and getting my device rooted again?

How you rooted it the first time, just repeat the steps again.

Well to get an OTA as far as I know you will need to un-root and try the update, BUT if you rooted with Chainfire method probably is gona fail, because that method trips knox, and the update is going to fail.
If for whatever reason you can update, you might loose root and maybe the exploit that worked with your current build this time is not going to work.
To find out what build you have, go to settings>>>general>>about device and there it's
That's why once you root you have to block or deny the updates until the people here with more knowledge report that it's safe.

I haven't tried it for marks but auto update via Kies should work. Even if rooted. Does not affect root. And does not factory reset. i. e. you get same effect as OTA.

can anyone confirm this?

[Q] Towelroot - Should I use it on Nexus 7 (2013)?

I've heard that using towelroot will root your phone but not unlock your bootloader. What does this entail? Can I still use Xposed Installer/ other root apps? Can I recieve OTA updates? Can I unroot again? Are there any downsides?
Looking forward to hearing about any experiences with this app.

I just got my N7 and I unlocked the bootloader. I then used towelroot to root it and it worked fine. I have not flashed a custom recovery so I don't think OTA should be an issue.

It's just that some of my other devices (samsung ones, admittedly) don't get OTA updates since I've rooted them, even though they're available. I've also heard that rooting most devices sort of cuts off the updates, and that towelroot prevents that by leaving the bootloader alone.

After rooting you don't need to worry about updates with a nexus device (or any other really). As you'll notice in the N7 Android Development section, there are a TON of lollipop builds and it hasn't been officially released yet. In other words, all updates will be baked into custom ROM's so there's no need to worry about official updates. And to root a nexus, simply unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery like TWRP, there's no need for tools

Ugh...Yeah I was aware of that. If you read my question again, that was not what I was asking for. My queries were about the towelroot application in particular and if I could recieve OTA updates if I left the bootloader alone. I did not ask for alternatives.

I don't understand why you would rely on an app for root with a locked bootloader on a Nexus device. It's so simple to unlock the bootloader and root. There's only, at a minimum, thousands of guides on how to do it. If you're worried about updates, unlock the bootloader.

Because I've heard unlocking the bootloader stops OTA updates. I don't want to have to download roms as my download speed is abysmal. Google services have (on average) 8 times the normal download speed at my place (no idea why), so I'd much rather recieve OTA updates from Google than download a rom.

Just another thought and I get your question, but if you did unlock the boot loader and then just downloaded the factory image from here https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images you WOULD be downloading it from Google so you should get the same speeds. Now I know you asked about towelroot and I've not used it, but if you're worried about download speeds the images in that link are directly from Google. I know what you mean though, I have very good download speeds and no matter what I download it does seem like the one's direct from Google are about 25% faster. They've got good networking that's for sure.

Heard that an unlocked bootloader prevents OTAs? I don't know where you heard that, but that's completely wrong. Bootloader state has absolutely no affect on OTAs. What an unlocked bootloader does is give you the ability to have complete control over your device. Flash any rom, flash any recovery, and never have to worry about losing root.
Take some time to read and learn before you start tinkering.

When I've rooted my phones in the past, I've stopped recieving OTA updates, even though they put out new ones. My friend who unlocked the bootloader on (and rooted) his nexus 7 also stopped recieving OTA updates. Are you saying that I can unlock bootloader and root my nexus 7 and I'll still receive OTA updates and/or can update to Lollipop when they release it a few weeks later for the device?

USUALLY it's a custom recovery that prevents OTAs not an unlocked bootloader or rooted device.
For example, I have a nVidia Shield which I prefer to get the OTAs for as the stock OS is perfect for my needs. Whenever an OTA is available, I have to reflash the stock recovery, apply the OTA and then I can flash a custom recovery again. I could have chosen to not use a custom recovery but I prefer to - so I just flash the stock one (1.0-3.0Mb size maybe?) and then back to custom after the OTA. takes 2min extra work before and after the OTA.

I can tell you for sure that neither me, nor my friend have flashed custom recovery. Still no updates.

What android version and kernel date do you currently show in "About Tablet" at the bottom of the settings screen?

The best way is to use towelroot now, and backup your data with titanium backup, then you can unlock your bootloader if you want for lollipop.

I haven't done anything to the tablet yet, it's still brand new. That was my friend with the updateless tablet.

Okay, this is going on a massive tangent. My question was : If I root the nexus 7 with towelroot, can I still update to lollipop when the update rolls out? What can or can't I do with towelroot? (except not flash custom recovery or roms)

I don't have it on me right now, but its a brand new one, and I've done nothing to it, so whatever kernel that is. I'm guessing the android version is 4.3 .

Just unlock the bootloader now. It'll save you so much time and headache in the future.

OTA with unlocked bootloader?

I'm having a hard time finding an answer to this. I am going to unlock my bootloader but wait until the beta is over to root. Can I still get OTA updates with an unlocked bootloader and no root? I've rooted all my Android devices in the past and some of them could receive updates when unlocked and some couldn't. This is my first Pixel.

What's the point of unlocking if you're not going to root or install a custom rom?

It turns out I was one of the lucky ones that got OEM unlock on a locked device with the beta. So, I was going to unlock invade the next update locked it back and just run out the beta. When it was over I was going to root. But I may as well do it now.

OTA is tricky with root but I have pulled it off the last few months. The key is to pull the update before it does so automatically. Google now checks for root on download and stops if you are rooted. It only does it once, if it finds root it won't check again until next month.
So the process is like this.
First Monday of the month in the morning hit Magisk Manager and unroot....restore images.
Do NOT reboot. You will remain rooted until you reboot and this is important.
Spam the check update button. Mid afternoon you will get the uodate. Let it install. But do NOT reboot.
After the update hit Magisk Manager again and install root....but select the option to install to the other slot. The update installed there...you want to root that slot.
Now you can reboot.
If you are not rooted, just unlocked it will update just like normal.

Yes without root you can definitely get OTA updates with an unlocked bootloader.

help/info about samsung rooting

hello everyone,
I have and use android phones last 10+ years, always rooted. But I never had samsung phone.
Now I hear only half informations from my buddy, that its dangeous to root samsung because of knox (i dunno what knox even is).
So, now I'm thinking to buy S20 and want to root it, and my question is..:
If I root it, is anything ''broken'' on the phone ? Can phone still recieve official Samsung OTA updates?
What are minuses? what to look for? What about this "knox"?

Well, I've owned a couple of Samsung devices over the years and I guess I can speak a bit from experience. Here's what you should know:
1.- U.S. phones have their bootloaders locked, so avoid buying a U.S. variant if you want to root it (some people want them for their Snapdragon chips)
2.- Knox is an e-fuse in the phone motherboard. Once you trip it by flashing custom software (root it), then that fuse will be tripped forever. You cannot get your Knox your status back to official unless you change the motherboard. Even flashing stock firmware will never get you this back to official.
3.- A lot of Samsung's security apps check for this fuse and will refuse to work if they detect that you've tripped it. Samsung Pay, Pass, Secure Folder are just some examples of features that will stop working when they detect a tripped Knox fuse. Some of these have bypass with root, but some don't.
4.- You will not get OTA updates with an unlocked bootloader, let alone root. It IS possible to get them back but only after flashing stock firmware and blocking the bootloader. These don't seem to check for Knox.

Hiiii. I currently have a Samsung S20 and I have rooted it before. Once you root it Knox security will be tripped and you will not be able to get it back. This means you will lose access to apps like Samsung Pay, Samsung Pass and Samsung Health. You will not receive OTA updates if you're rooted, but if you flash stock firmware again and lock the bootloader you can start receiving updates again. I currently have a custom ROM installed and I have my ROM rooted. To me, it's been a great experience overall. I didn't really use the Knox features, so I didn't care much about losing it. I have loved rooting my S20 and using a custom ROM !!

Actually you can use Samsung Health, just currently no version above 6.19 (2 versions behind current) until we find a way to patch it...i use it daily with my Watch 4 on Rooted S20+ 5G....

Ohh okay !!! Thank you for letting us know !! I don't use Samsung Health so I had not tested it myself, but I had heard that Samsung Health doesn't work with root. Thanks for telling us it works fine !!

so, when rooted there are no OTAs.. thats a nono for me heh.. but question, if no OTAs come from mobile itself, is it possible to get uprades through PC then.. (Kies) maybe ?

Yeah you can flash updates with something like Odin (never used Kies myself, I don't know if it still works)
