Turn on hotspot automatically? - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

So my new car has apple carplay but not Android Auto.
I'm using an ancient iPhone as a dedicated car play device, but need to feed it data with Wi-Fi.
Anyone know of a way to automatically turn on the hotspot when my phone connects to the Bluetooth in my car?
I'm on an unrooted Verizon pixel 3XL

With Tasker you can,

Won't work. Needs root with tasker

I use tasker without root to turn on wifi hotspot each time it connects to my cars bluetooth. No root needed for that.

I'm getting an error when I try.
Any advice?

Macrodroid appears to work fine for this on stock Android 10.

There's an app called "Automate" that can enable hotspot when Bluetooth gets connected.

Bluetooth Auto connect

On all my previous phones (iPhones, T-Mobile G2x, Galaxy Nexus) they would auto connect to my bluetooth device as soon as I walk in the door, but not so with the Galaxy S III.
This has become very annoying, because I have to go into bluetooth settings and manually connect every time. My bluetooth is always on, and the devices are paired, so they should just connect when I'm in range.
I've tried to use NFC tags, but all that could do is turn BT on/off, and it won't reconnect, even if you turn ON the BT from an OFF state.
Anyone else have this issue too?

Yes. My Vibrant would autoconnect to my car's bluetooth stereo, but I have to manually connect to it with my GS3. I have not found a fix.
There is a very easy solution to this. I use tasker to automate everything and after days of looking i found an extension plug in that lets you connect to a bluetooth device. Works every time.
I never keep bluetooth on anymore. It turns on and connects to stuff automatically when i plug a charging cord. Ill post settings and the extension later.

Mine auto connects to my car every time I get in. I haven't done anything special to enable it. Is it all devices or just certain ones?

Please do post more details about this. It would come in handy for those of us with BT devices that won't auto connect

How to you specify to Tasker to connect to a BT device? (Not just simply turning it on/off, because that won't help with the auto connect)

You would have to ask the Dev, rest assured he will get back to you SUPER fast, as he has with me. I'm 99% sure it can be done.

So you don't actually have the solution for Tasker? You sounded so confident with the "LOL"!
Theres a whole wiki on it and it will tell you how to program tasker. Its a bit confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, its easy. Google also works to find different profiles as well as sharing them from a backup.

Bluetooth, easy shift between 2 phones?

Hi. Have a JY mtcb head unit with Maylaysk rom and 4.4.4 android. Find it tricky to shift between the 2 phones i have conected in the bluetooth app on my head unit. First i have to mark the active phone and then deselect it. Then i can mark the next phone in the list and connest it. Is there a easy way to do this with just a short cut or a another app that will do it more easy?
I do not know a shortcut but maybe I can do even better
Buy an android compatible Bluetooth dongle and pair both (cost me $4 incl shipping from China), I did that with my OBD device and phone but see know issue why 2 phones shouldn`t work as well.
The only thing that could be a (small) problem is which it would dial a number with.
Just a suggestion of course

What functions would you be using in Tasker?
I was just thinking that Tasker could possibly be used to automate bluetooth switching. I'm not sure HOW to set it up though.
I use the app Trigger. I use it to turn on my phone's Hotspot when it connects to my headunits Bluetooth connection and when it disconnects it turns off the Hotspot and turn on my wifi. It is very easy to use compared to Tasker. Tasker is good as it has a lot of functions but I don't quite know how to use it yet.

I was using Tasker for a few of these things, but actually the Smart Connect on my phone does all these things well.
I think what this thread is about though, which I would like to know two is that if you have two phones connected to the head unit, it connects to one, but even though the other is stored as a bluetooth connection it will only autoconnect to the last connected phone. This means you have to manually hit the connect on the head unit for it to work if you weren't the last one in the car!
It would be better if you could tell the head unit to have a "preference" to connect to phone A over phone B, but if phone A isn't present, then connect to phone B.
Well the headunit is very limited, but if you are very knowledgeable in Tasker you set something like that up on the headunit. I think trigger can let it do the same thing by using restrictions,

USB GPS?

Anyone using a USB pluggable external GPS on the Pixel C?
How well is it working out for you and which model did you go with?
I don't use USB, but Bluetooth from my phone. Works great.

How are sending the phone's GPS data to the tablet over Bluetooth? What app(s) are you using to make it work?
Thank you for responding.
So I tried using a USB-GPS unit with a Nexus 9 once. The N9 has it's own built in GPS just like cellphones.
And I found it was difficult to get the phone to use the USB-GPS. I kept having to fiddle with it. It just never really worked seamlessly.
What was your experience with the Bluetooth GPS? Was it a set-it-and-forget-it kind of deal or did you have to turn it on all the time, etc?
On the phone I use Bluetooth GPS Output (paid, after testing with the free version) by Meowsbox. On my tablet I use Bluetooth GPS by GG Moblab. Once paired and connected through the two apps (you have to enable a mock location server on the tablet, but the app walks you through it, I use the widgets to first start the server on my phone, than the client on my tablet. This setup works flawlessly for me.

Your car is not the problem i faced that before and support had no idea what's happening, anyway activate developer mode and change usb configuration to transfer
That fixed it for me

I didn't put it from developer mode. But i tried changing it to transfer. Still nothing changed. It showed me only once that android auto is connected. But nothing changed in the car. And can't even press the notification. And when I open the settings of android auto. Couldn't find any car connection. It's so frustrating
I've just tried to put it to transfer. still the same issue. even though it is another car. But I was able to connect it with a car that has wireless android auto.
I really tried every usb, original and even 6A usb from my original one plus.
I'm I the only one having this problem
For me AA works fine in my Audi.
But it doesn't work in the Volvo of the company.
The volvo also had difficulties with my Huawei P30 Pro. Die Audi didn't have problems.
So could well be the car.

Question USB connection for file transfer/Android Auto not working

I'm having some trouble with Android Auto. My new OnePlus 11 will only connect "Charging Only" and will not connect for File Transfer / Android auto.
If I connect via USB and enable "USB Tether" it worked for a second, enough to pop Android Auto, and then disables...
It did work for a phone-to-phone transfer using OnePlus's transfer app!
What else have I tried:
1) Hard reset to factory
2) developer mode - I just tried editing the default connection mode (after enabling developer mode) and still nothing.
3) USB monitor - Indeed I have also tried a USB monitor, and nada. It connects to power and then disconnects immediately.
Verification! Both my car and the monitor connected perfectly with no additional config to my OnePlus 9, and my Oneplus 7 Pro today.
Any suggestions?
Exact same problem here...after trying to connect nothing happens (in Skoda Kamiq). Phone says it's connected to android auto. Strange things is it works without problems in my other car (Toyota Aygo). Seems like a compatibility issue in with car hardware or software. Probably a system update is needed to fix this sinds it's a new phone.

Have you tried the newest APK version of Android Auto from APK Mirror?
Yep..9.0
USB Debug is not enabled
For me it's more than one device that does not work. Both Android Auto on my 2018 Nissan Leif and my external monitor. Both of which worked perfectly with my OnePlus 9.
What is OS?
Color OS look like aa can't use.

When I plug the cable into my phone in the car, I got a pop-up screen asking what I want to do with the connection. One of the options is File Transfer / Android Auto. Does that happen for you?

I spoke to support and they wanted to replace my device, by just returning it!
I would have to be without a device (I traded in my old one). I would likely move to Samsung rather than be without a phone. Then return it.

I phones them. We went through everything. It's 100% the phone as the same issue manifest with multiple devices. Car & Monitor.
I'm sure this is software related because it works in my other car. I wouldn't return my device to find out the new phone has the de problem. Also read alot about Samsung users (s23) with connection issues for Android Auto.
I'm somehow relieved it's a software problem so they CAN fix it, the question is, when..
