I was originally considering picking up a G3, but decided against doing so because of the many reports of artificial "over-sharpening" of the picture quality. Since G4s have come down in price, they are now on my radar as well, so my question for the community is simple - does the G4 suffer from the same artificial sharpening that the G3 does?

I'm talking about the screen; not the camera (although if the camera's pictures are degraded worse than comparable devices, it is important to consider also).

That's a bummer. I'm guessing the situation isn't much better on the Verizon variant of the phone, so it looks like the G4 is probably out of the question as far as I'm concerned. Thanks for the information though.

Mate don't listen to these guys, they don't know what they're talking about...
The G4 does *NOT* suffer from G3's sharpening problems (personal experience as well as many reviews, check Anandtech's which is the best review site) and new G4's almost don't suffer from bootloop problems.
The display is brilliant, the phone is great, good battery and nice custom ROM support. If you want a G4 definitely buy it, now that price is low it has terrific value for money
P.S.: the camera as well is simply superb, just check "G4 Picture Samples" thread here on XDA

Interesting. Do you know how the custom Rom and kernel support is with regard to the Verizon variant of the G4? I was just on the G3 forums and there is apparently a lot of hoops that have to be jumped through in order to get custom recovery on a Verizon G3. Is it any easier and better on the G4? Are there any noteworthy pitfalls?

I honestly don't know, but I suggest you buy an unlocked H815 international model since it's for sure the most supported.
The G4 has great value for money now. The camera is superb. The screen is amazing and no it doesn't over sharp anything. This was only on G3. Battery life is OK nothing super but definitely not terrible. Newer G4s do not suffer from the Bootloop. The phone only misses a fingerprint reader. If you want root and custom ROMs but the international H815 which you can unlock.

The H815 is a no-go for Verizon and Verizon MVNOs. It's gotta be the VS986. I'll check in on the Verizon-specific forums for details on that. Otherwise, I'd have to shell out the extra money for a Moto X Pure Edition, which is currently hovering at just below $200 on the used market; hopefully it and the G4 (whichever I decide to go with) drop off by the time upgrade season rolls around in the spring.

Newer G4's typically don't suffer from bootloops but they are still possible. Anyways LG does change it under warranty terms if you are so unlucky to get a bootloop on a new G4, even if you have a custom ROM.

LG sold millions of G4 phones, a tiny few of those had the bootloop issue, and LG fixed them. And the reason that you buy an LG G4 is because it was the best phone overall, a year ago, and still is the best phone you can buy today, when you consider removable battery & memory card, camera, screen, audio quality etc. at ANY PRICE.
Tiny few ??? Ahem ahem its a manufacturing fault its bound to happen in every phone atleast with s/n 5xxx ....the blue print of g4 is exactly the same atleast for the older versions...so u are a bit exaggerated about tiny few of g4s while the reported are in millions..they r better options from the g4 like the moto droid turbo buy the 64gb version best phone best price better than g4 it is also cheaper than g4 u can get ot around 180US$ used

LG has presented “new“' LG V30s RuinQ in Barcelona: same design, CPU, camera, display and battery, but 6GB RAM, up to 256GB internal storage and new AI software for the camera. Two new colors also.
More details:
https://www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2018/2/24/17048574/lg-v30s-price-release-date-mwc-2018
https://youtu.be/SkfvKEUZrOI
All the "new" software aspects (AI, etc) will also be rolled out to existing V30/V30+ sometime in the future. LG admits that. It's in several of the articles.
The immediate question that surfaces when you look at the V30S is,*why did this need to exist?*LG gave a media presentation here at MWC where it explained its thinking about AI integration into mobile devices and how that found expression in the company’s new AI Cam, the V30S’ headline novelty.
But here’s the issue: the AI Cam and every other software improvement in the V30S are promised to be delivered as an update to V30 phones. So there’s no hardware reason for new hardware. Unless you were really lusting for a slightly darker gray on the back of your phone.

So the only thing REALLY different is more RAM and the option of 256GB internal storage besides the 128GB storage (already available on the V30+). This new V30ABCD will have 128GB/256GB storage options.
For me, then the only aspect that's different is more RAM.

I'm pissed off
For me this is a joke, in Europe, LG started sale of V30 in December, so presenting new model in February makes my angry for this company. and I will never buy their product.
We still don't have Oreo update and probably, we will not see it before a few weeks after start of sellling ThunQ model.

will be mine on Day 1.
Do you know which markets will be sold ? Korea and ?
Which's the LG keynote date ad MWC18 ?

Take a deep breath. "Presenting"/announcing is not the same as "releasing"/available for sale.
When did LG ANNOUNCE the LG V30? August.
When did LG make the LG V30 available for sale in your area? December.
You probably won't see this until April-May.
Oh, sure they'll release it in South Korea next week. Just like they released the V30 in South Korea in September. But the rest of the world probably won't see it for months. UNLESS this is why the V30 and V30+ has been "out of stock" on B&H Photo? Because LG was producing this phone? If so, then I'm impressed they are actually announcing and releasing a phone pretty close together.

No, they have said that's June.
https://www.google.com/search?q=jun...rome..69i57.3415j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
And even that's debatable whether that's the "announce" date or the "release" (available in store) date.
When it is time for me to use JUMP again with T-Mobile, I might get this device. Only because I like the device but having more RAM would be a benefit. That and I really like that blue color. Unfortunately T-Mobile will probably only get that gray color. Since it'll be December before I get it, hopefully all colors will already be revealed.

I think I'm going to JUMP to another device with my v30 as I'm almost Jump eligible. Haven't decided what yet, maybe. Refurbished v20 or a U11 life since it's rootable.
But as much of a fanboy of LG as I've been, I think the smart move next is OnePlus.. Sad times for carrier branded LG devices..

lol it's amazing to me that anyone gives a **** about "AI" in this form. wow, it can detect the difference between food and faces. i struggle to consider that intelligence. just software doing what it's supposed to.
more ram
that should be form the first
I wonder if the fact that this phone will launch with Oreo (and thus mandatory Treble support) will do anything for us OG V30 owners.
More RAM is a good thing but the rest... The AI stuff being just software is disappointing. I don't really need 256GB internal storage because of the SD card slot. The new colors really don't impress me either. LG's silver model of the V30/V30+ I think is the nicest one they have released so far. It is nice and shiny compared to the toned down look of the platinum.
This refresh I don't think is going to help LG. They might get a few extra sales for those who held out for something with more RAM. If they had gone with an SD845 and added an AI processor, I think the reasons to upgrade would be a lot more compelling. With the S9 and S9+ whoring for attention, the V30s ThinQ is just a fart in the wind that has no punch.

Same here. And they also lied to me through customer service. They changed the requirements for a 70 euro cashback after I ordered the phone. When I contacted them, they said I was still eligible because I ordered before the change.
Then when I received the phone a month later and tried to redeem the cashback they denied everything even though I had proof of everything. Took me 20 emails and I was nearly going to court before they gave in.

that's called optimization. my issue is that they call it AI like it's some great technological feat. this device should detect when to use this "night mode" right out of the box. it's just a piece of software they should have included in the first place, but didn't. i'll be kinda ticked if they don't introduce these features to my device, being that it is ONLY software. i don't want to have to use GCam.

Judy is more in line with what I personally think LG's next release should have been. LG should have focused on that and been announcing that now with a release window of mid-March. Instead, Judy is looking lime a late June or July release, when everyone will be too busy with summer to care until the fall flagships start making headlines with the SD850.
Another not developer friendly device, select variants with unlockable bootloader. lol
LG got some more bad press today when one of their phones burst into flames on an Air Canada flight before it left Toronto for Vancouver. That effectively puts LG on par with the Note 7.

But they couldn't go with the 845 at this point in time -- just like they couldn't go with the 835 last year for the G6. Samsung again has all supply locked up for first weeks.
At least LG is not wasting a "new" phone with "last year's Snapdragon", like they did the G6.
For really new phones with latest processors, the new reality is you have to stand in line behind Samsung. Why Samsung has such a monopoly on the new Snapdragon needs investigation. It was supposed to be for last year only (due to Samsung helping Qualcomm design and manufacture the next-gen 835).
Also, is Qualcomm going to only release ONE new premium chip each year, when in the past they released at least two each year?
LG wisely has pushed back G7 release until they can have adequate supply of 845 chips.
So, LG tricked out a V30 to have something to show at this event. They can't show up empty handed. Samsung and LG are competitive South Korean conglomerates.

Judy IS LG's next "real" release. They just have to delay it until they get supply of SN845 chips. Otherwise they release Judy with 835 and everyone makes fun of them for having "last year's" Snapdragon.

All the so-called "AI" software is coming to ALL LG V30 in a future update. The only thing this new V30ABCD has is new colors, more RAM. And double internal memory option (256GB) in addition to the 128GB the V30+ already has.
The G6 seems to have a really active dev community. Is that a one off or is that constant? Is it easy to root LG devices? I have a choice between this of the S9+ and I can't decide on what to go for.

I can't speak on behalf of the LG community as of late but the last time I had one, the G4, there was plenty of people wanting to mod/create ROM's but couldn't due to LG's restrictive bootloader unlock nature.
If it means anything, I wouldn't grab the Snapdragon 845 version of the S9+ either. If you want to root/flash ROM's, you need to get the Exynos version of the S9+. I wouldn't, as there is reportedly severe battery issues with the Exynos chipset. Getting root on the S8+ with the Snapdragon version took a very very long time whereas there was virtually no wait for the Exynos version.
I really hope there's some development for the G7!
I think it died after the G4. Just the for traffic alone in these G7 forums, should show that not many are interested in LG anymore. If it weren't for the free phones promo, I prolly wouldn't even get an LG.
The V20 had a pretty nice community for T-Mobile at least and even somewhat still does. The reason I got the Note 8 over the V30 was it had and still currently has root which I need in order to even use a phone to my liking. If the G7 or V40 has a nice root community I might get the V40. However at this point I'm likely just getting a Oneplus 6. As at this point I doubt we'll have root on the Note 9 Snapdragon version or T-Mobile devices as a whole. They used to be really root friendly like Sprint then once they became big they became pretty bad from a customer standpoint. They definitely are better than the other big two but not the carrier I fled to years ago.

When LG invariably stops supporting this phone 9 months into it's life, and you want to at least have security patches on it....
So, the OP7 pro sucks a**. I am done with crap hardware just to have an open phone.
With that said, if @ChazzMatt wants to catch me up on the latest... That would be great.
If anyone wants to know how bad the OP7 pro sucks .. just ask. Luckily they are going for around 800 on eBay for the 12/256 model that I bought.
Just typing this on my US998 V30+ is soooo much nicer. Having the "all screen" on the OP7 pro is just an illusion.

Nice to have you back. Someone mentioned you a couple of days back and I was wondering if you'd ever come back. As soon I saw the title I hoped it'd be you. Nice to see you are here
But I am curious why OnePlus 7 pro sucks, I was considering my next phone as OnePlus phone as LG seems to be allowing unlocking only on EU variant devices(and you leaving made unlocking on other regions less likely ) and their updates are slow as ever.
So far h930eu got pie update and it was pulled back but reason was not given. It had issues like notification overlap and poor Ram management. We have rctd and disable verify working for pie.
Australian and some other 930ds as well as Korean v30 also got the update. Those weren't pulled back afaik.
Lineage OS 16 with pie blobs is work in progress. There's some RIL issue on it where sim sometimes works and sometimes doesn't but otherwise it seems a big improvement :fingers-crossed:
Edit: We also have Ceres kernel now for some time and it's amazing
Glad to have you back.
Edit 2: With pie coming A few of people bricked their phone with 9008
Good job inform him
Also I wonder what's wrong with OP7?

Welcome back I remember how you said goodbye to us before changing to OP7 Pro Honestly I didn't expect such a quick return but this only proves that the V30 is a great and underrated phone. In a free moment describe your problems with OP7 Pro. This will be great advice for others
I used a Pixel 3 XL for 2 weeks. I went insane. It's heavy, ugly, even darker screen than V30, half the battery life and the sound quality was abysmal. Oh and no wide angle camera was driving me insane. Also the GPS in other phones is horrible. You have to shout at Google Assistant for it to hear you lol! It's shocking how much LG nailed the hardware to this day. I returned the Pixel. It made me realize how great my V30 is and that I can go with it for at least two more years.

Camera was pathetic....Inface totally artificial and overprocessed.
Though Oxygen OS was amazing, I would go with better cameras anytime.
Was happy after I was back to V30.
I have used a S10+ for work and daily for a week. I couldnt stand it after that. The ultra sonic reader was absolutely horrible. Beyond me why any manufacturer doesnt have both rear and display FPR. The ultra sonic is not even a good verision of the display FPR in the first place....
Software, Idk if its because Pie is truly trash or Samsung is utterly incapable of optimizing their OS and making any feature at all work just as good as other flagships or even the old V30 i.e proximity sensor/AoD, wide angle, portrait/night mode (V30 Gcam/night sight), manual focus etc. The battery life was a joke, although performance was good the phone was no where near smooth like an iphone.
In terms of design, it was a big phone, in a light compact form factor with one of the best displays. Basically similar feel to a V30. For S10+ price range and samsung being the industry lead, you would think we would see an innovative implementation of the infinity O display. But nope, no front wide angle, no ToF/infared/depth sensor, no shoulder buttons, nothing worth changing usage at all. If we look at the note 10, no new front optics/iris, right hand power button, headphone jack, SD card expansion, and rear sensor all gone. Its sad LG is losing against these imbeciles.
Anyway my ending point, it will be a tricky one upgrading from the V30 i think. OP 7 pro imo, is good but the phone is gigantic and heavy. No rear sensor, jack or SD slot. The V50 has it all but its $1k and is bootloader locked.....

V50 is good. And it price will drop fast. And for the future, who know if it can be unlocked, like the v30 is not supposed to be unlocked for all model

Nice to see you are here
So far h930eu got pie update and it was pulled back but reason was not given.

@tech_infinity just about covered it all.
We have newer:
Dev Patched LGUP (by @tecknight),
rctd (by @JohnFawkes) and
disable verify (by @Zackptg5)
files which are compatible with Pie, as well as backwards compatible with Oreo. I've put the newer LGUP in relevant threads like Frankenstein, WTF Instructions and EU H930 Pie KDZ (for several people who want to DOWNGRADE from buggy Pie back to stable Oreo).
I had to re-write the Section 6 (TWRP stuff) of the WTF instructions slightly for the different order for the newer disable encryption and disable root checker files. Basically you have to flash Magisk twice. You can read a copy here, which is a standalone post in the EU H930 Pie KDZ thread.
Stable TWRP 3.2.3.7 is still recommended by our TWRP dev -- yes, even on Pie.
I have new Pie KDZ threads locked and loaded for North American variants, whenever they are released. That link is for US998, but I have all the others ready too.
______
On the non-dev side, we still have people who refuse to read. This guy posted IN the WTF thread he couldn't find the instructions even though the first post of the WTF thread is a HUGE hyperlink to go to the Instructions... Several people set him straight.
Couple days later, another guy claimed the WTF Instructions were a complete mess ("rabbit holes") and said the Frankenstein Instructions not only didn't have KDZ download links, that there was "no mention" anywhere in the thread where to download needed KDZ. I called him a liar to his face and posted screenshot of Frankenstein Instructions showing KDZ download links.
He basically wanted a dedicated thread for US998 -- instead of instructions where you follow what's right for your variant. (And he didn't even need Frankenstein, as he was already on US998 with fastboot flash commands.) He also didn't quite comprehend he needed to downgrade to pre-July 2018 Oreo, even though that's said several times throughout the WTF instructions -- especially at the beginning, and also listed first in the Troubleshooting Tips. That's the WHOLE POINT of WTF bootloader unlock exploit! Plus, I had reiterated that prerequisite at least TWICE in my replies to him.
Then, a few hours later he bricked his phone trying to flash T-mobile H932 firmware onto his US998. I asked him why he did that, and posted screenshots from both WTF and Frankenstein threads showing bolded red letter warnings T-mobile H932 has different RSA encryption. He said he thought warning was only one way, not the other.
I'm not picking on the 2nd guy specifically (I'm sorry he bricked his phone) -- but both are examples of people rushing to do something and not reading. Skimming so fast they miss very important information. (How can you miss the post #1 link to the WTF instructions?)
________
Anyway, WELCOME BACK!
And yes, LG nailed the hardware for the LG V30. It really was the best phone of all 2017, and with the early Oreo WTF bootloader unlock exploit it's PURE GOLD. (I still suspect someone in LG did that on purpose. So thank you to them also!)

Yeah. But those who want to buy a phone soon and definitely want to be able to root and install custom ROMs, they can't really take that gamble.
Also LG seems be messing up a lot. India (world's 2nd largest smartphone market), they launched neither the V50 nor the G8. Even V40 costs about 600$ right now.
I was almost about to post that the important message of this thread is that Brian IS BACK, not the inferiorities of various other phones. But I see now that ChazzMatt got us back on track.
Anyways welcome back, buddy. In sorry the OP7 didn't work for you, but you've been missed! We've held the fort in your absence, with Chazz and the Devs doing the heavy lifting as usual.
H932 lafsploit is still going strong. As always a few people have problems or "misread" ( ) the instructions, and we try to get them back on track the best we can. But sometimes we just don't know the exact answer and missed your insight.
As you've seen, Pie is finally on its way, hit the Korean V300 and the European H930. LG pulled it temporarily and are now in the process of re-releasing it.
My current obsession is the fact that all Pie KDZs we've seen so far are still ARB0, which means V30 is still rootable, since we can still roll back, either for WTF or for lafsploit. We have yet to see US releases, but fingers crossed that the barn door stays open
Once again welcome back. The offer to meet and help with Windows on your PCs stands, as I'm only 10mins away.

Man, I just got the Note 9 a few weeks ago and I keep my cracked screen V30+ on hand to listen to music. The Note just can't crack it plus root is nice.

I find this hard to believe. The pixel 3xl is basically v30 with some changes as you mentioned like have a wide angle camera and the DAC which I don't use.

Different preferences for different folks. Personally, i dislike the Pixel (at least compared to the v30). I'm probably biased, but where I'm from Pixels are expensive. Moreso than LG phones after a few months (their price drops insanely fast, at least in my opinion).
Also, i was never an audiophile (I'm not one even after the v30), but i have to say my tase in audio has shifted significantly after this getting this phone (and some chifi equipment). I'm going with v30 on this, but I'm sure many people would disagree.

Yeah. If someone told me they'd give me their pixel 3xl in exchange for my v30+150$ I'd probably do it.
Seems like pixel 3xl didn't match up with what he personally wanted
Though pixel devices have been notorious for having some or the other issue soon after soon.

You are from the lucky ones, but of course AT&T locked i suppose.
Many others, myself included, that we use AT&T unlocked and ULM versions, are still waiting for LG to keep its promise, but i am absolutely sure that this will remain a dream.
There is no chance i think, that LG will give us this promised android 10 update, after 1 year since its release.
LG left our V35. We will not get new updates
We need LineageOS and someone who will support our phones.
The V35 is a great piece of hardware. It is sad that LG has abandonned it. Shabby software IMHO explains the dire state of LG's mobile division. The odds are good it will be shuttered, sold, or otherwise entirely different in the near future.
Getting LOS support going would be nice. Much of the foundation is in place with work on the sibling V40 and G7 phones. The prospects for it happening are low. The phone is dated so not attracting developers. To make matters worse, LOS is not a viable path forward for LG owners in USA. Carriers are shutting down 3G and redeploying the spectrum. LG's radio implementation is proprietary. Without reverse engineering or a change of heart by LG, the phones will not have VoLTE capability with LOS roms.
As for me, I keeping an eye on Sony's offerings. To LG ThinQ products I say no ThanQ.

Unfortunately i agree with you..LG abandoned V35 in its fake, except the Korean models.
Its been a few months since i put aside this wonderful device,as a back up.
I moved on with 1+7,as my daily driver, which is a really great device, got android 10 almost 1 year ago,and android 11 is on its way.
As a second device for professional reasons,i recently got a V50,which is a great device too,and even though it's a Sprint version,i use it in Europe where i live.
Immediately updated to android 10 from 9 and is going very strong.
Of course someone could say,why do you choose an LG device from the moment that the company announced its withdrawal from the smartphone industry?
I know the risks of my choice, mainly if something goes wrong and need repair, but till today, all my LG devices served me really well, despite the fact of luck of quick updates,in addition to other companies.

I didn't know that, I don't keep up much with tech news anymore. I get a phone that works for me, do the customizations I care about and forget about it. Anyways, sad to see their shutting down their phones unit without releasing 10 for us. And happy that I followed @cmrntnnr Korean Q guide a while ago.
i was looking to buy a V35 because price related to specs is awesome, but iirc, i could unlock bootloader but there is no custom ROM ?
GSI not supported on this phone ?
Sorry for theses dumbs questions
The phone is awesome hardware and android 9 isn't that bad. It's a trade-off.
I stuffed the Korean v350N android 10 in my US unlocked v35awm. All good and dandy, wifi calling working, 4G working just fine. But my car won't recognize its android auto link anymore. I get a black screen after plugging the phone to the car, even with all paired and stuff. Guess I'll back to android 9, even though the Korean 10 worked fine. But had no majors gains with Android 10, was just a test. Won't feel the downgrade much...
I also installed the Korean 10 ROM, and all is well except my mobile speed test has gone from 150/50 to 33/2 on TELUS in Canada. Any suggestions to fix this?
