I'm on the fence between waiting for the N5 or getting the OG Pro.
Is the OG Pro difficult to root, flash custom recovery, CM 10.2, etc? (That's what I really want the device for)
Is the bootloader locked?
Any basic suggestions or tips would be appreciated.
The boot loader is locked. However, there is a work around called "Loki", hence the roms, which btw run great on the G Pro.
But I'd advise you to wait for the N5 due to it having a fully unlocked boot loader , more accessories and more support by both Google and XDA.
I will buy one for sure.

OG Pro is simple to root, both cwm and twrp recoveries are easily available and working, and there is an official CM 10.2 available which is a nightly, so daily updates
So if these are your only considerations, you can buy the OG Pro with your eyes closed.

My only concern is that I don't know if the 980H is the same as the 980.
The 980H is the Panama version, the ROM from which is a popular flash option for this model in a Stock ROM. I'm actually in Panama, and this is where I'll purchase.
What about the root, recovery options? Should I use the one's for the 980? I don't see any for the H variant.

OG Pro is a GREAT Device in its own way. If you need Removable battery, Micro SD slot then this device is suitable.
N5 has is pros and cons. U get latest S800 processor, direct updates from google, but only 16 or 32GB storage and non removable 2300 mah of N5 is no near to 3140mah of OGP. And LG will MOSTLY update OGP to 4.4 Kitkat by end of this year.
It is easy to flash custom roms on this device, well easier than HTC phones and there is going to be lot of development in future for this device. This device also have OFFICIAL support from Cyanogen mod team.(Correct me if i'm wrong).
For me OGP is better option than most of the other phones out there right now.

Don't you think that LG will eventually patch the bootloader exploit and end the party?
That's what bothers me about it, because Samdung did basically the same thing recently with Knox.

Just as long as those features aren't tied to the bootloader, then there's no problem, but if the case of Samdung's Knox bootloaders have illustrated anything, it's that this is always an option.
Without the Knox bootloader, 4.3 update broke Wi-Fi, Sound, etc. It's what pushed me to sell the S4 and be done with Samdung once and for all.

Well Samdung are floating in the sky because of lots of sales and huge profit (about $10 billion i guess!!) so they don't care about the developer community and moving against it like Apple. Samdung is not apple but they don't understand it. they want to provide security on their devices like Apple does. Thats what they are trying with something called Knox bootloaders. This is one of the reason that kept me away from getting a Note 3. LG has long way to go before they become like Samdung. So i wouldn't worry about it for atleast 2 years! LOL

Well, their protection scheme is similar. I forgot what they call it, but it's all the same sort of sham. It releases the corporation from liability for warranty service, regardless of what the issue is, if the "protection" flag is tripped.
I find myself dreaming often about what it would be like if a company (like LG, which is smaller than the competition) threw everything they had behind the Open Source and Development community and just made their devices with folks like us XDA members in mind! How many millions of us are there now? We probably buy more gadgets as a group than any other segment of the global population as a whole, yet we are basically ignored and treated like criminals.

True!!! But the companies always think about the mass market first who are non-tech people who just buy and use the phone as it is..
The issue is warranty! when the phone is being used for development there is always risk of hard brick unless u know what you are doing with the phone. They don't want people messing their devices themselves and claim warranty for it. That is why the bootloaders are locked and flagged if unlocked for development purposes.

Yeah, that's the reality, but I think there's a situation where companies can say, "Look, here's literally everything you need. All the documentation, sources, drivers, binaries... everything. You can play with your device all you want, but you assume that responsibility if something goes wrong." Then, they ought to make the flashing and modding tools part of the package. Make them robust, and invest in safe flashing systems. Fewer issues as a result.
I don't think it's fair that companies should be made to pay for stupidity, and I accept it as a cost of doing what we all love to do. This is what I thought the "Google Edition" devices were going to be all about, but even there, we still face a situation where so many things aren't provided properly.
I am hunting down a E980. To me, it represents the best value for the money right now. My plan is to use the Loki bootloader exploit, slap CM 10.2 on it and never look back. In fairness, LG's UI is a bit too colorful for my tastes, but it isn't anywhere near as hideous as Samdung's Touchwiz circus clowns on acid abomination.

I'm about to upgrade my Verizon account, and I'm trying to decide between the LG G4 and HTC One M9. Right now, rooting and bootloader unlocking are possible on the M9. Difficult; but possible. However, the G4 still lacks carrier-specific forums on XDA. I know that the G4 was only released on Verizon at the beginning of this month, but I would have expected to see more movement on its development by now.
Is it reasonable to think that the G4 will ever have root or bootloader unlock on Verizon? The G3 has an all-in-one toolkit, but that took a whole year. Then again there are rumors on here that LG might open up bootloader unlocks for all variants.
I want to want this phone so bad, but it's dead in the water if I'll be stuck on stock firmware without root for 2 years. Is it still just too early to expect anything and the hacks will likely flow soon? Or are things really moving slow? I'm not asking for an ETA. I'm just wondering if there's reasonable hope for anything to happen.

I'd forgotten about jcase's news. I guess mostly I was just worried by the lack of carrier-specific forums. I've never seen it take this long for a flagship phone before.
I have 2 more weeks to make my choice. I may go your route.
We will get Root and Bootloader access, it is just a matter of time since the devs (or rather some of them) already have it and are working on making a safer method to do it.
As far as a direct unlock from LG, that is never going to happen. They have personally stated they have no plans to do the unlocker for any of the "older models" of the G4 (So no AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, US Cellular, etc.).
While I do understand your concerns as Root is very important to most of us and it seems like an eternity waiting for it, but trust me, this device can certainly hold its own just based on its own merits.......Yes Root will be nice and bring forth welcome modifications and removal of bloatware, but in the mean time the phone is still an incredible piece of technology and is also a great feel in the hand.
Overall I would say get yourself the G4, you will not be sorry.

I'm a pretty heavy root app (and custom recovery) user. I like making regular nandroid backups. I use Titanium Backup all the time for so many different functions. I love my root-enabled Tasker profiles and apps like VideoReg Pro with save-to-SD capability. Plus, a bootloader unlocked phone just means so many more ROMs and a much simpler process to try them out.
I agree it's an amazing phone (hardware), but the software side of things is even more important to me. Thus my dilemma.

I fully understand, trust me I am the same way. I got my G4's on 6/17 and this is the longest I have ever owned a smartphone without Bootloader & Root Access.......It really sucked for me at first (as I did not know it was still locked down when I got it and had I known that before hand I honestly would have gone for the Moto N6 instead) after a week or so with the G4 though I am super happy with my decision and now I just see Root as being the eventual icing on an already fantastic cake.

It's not just the carriers either. They told me they have no plans to unlock my 815 TW version that has no ties to any carrier either.

Ahh, I see. I was not sure on those as I do not have one at my disposal so I had no reason to ask about it. Thank you for the information on the matter though.....I guess the H815 is just special?? Seems like it is the ONLY one LG is willing to "Fully Support".

Well Mine is H815. But it's the TW version... The H815 Europe version without any carrier ties is the only one that can unlock. I wish I had known this all when i ordered it .

You and me both, buddy. I ended up with the US991 because I was dumb and did not check the root status before I bought the G4 (Don't get me wrong I love the phone and everything, just should have done my research is all)
We technically already have root. It's just a matter of being safely packaged and released. I give it another month or 2 before we see a long hand method on how to root our phones without bricking them.
In all honesty the G4 is far superior to the m9 in just about every way, aside from the forward facing speaker of the m9.

That’s debatable. I prefer the smaller screen and resolution myself. I'd rather not sacrifice CPU/GPU cycles and battery life for pixels I can't even see. I mean, the G4 has 4x the pixels of my 24" monitor. That's just stupid
Then there's the snapdragon 810 in the M9 that some say is horrible, and others say is amazing. And yes, the stereo speakers would be nice.
If the M9 had a removable battery and the G4's camera, I wouldn't even be here. The camera is really important to me though, and the M9's looks like a toy compared to the G4's.

Oh the G4 is deff display overkill. And I'd be with the m9 personally if the camera was on par with the G4 and s6, even without a removable battery.
I went with the G4 for the camera and sd card. I have kids and taking a million pics of them are more important than hearing my ring tone and music louder without a Bluetooth speaker.
I prefer a largerish phone after my s5 and the G4 didn't really feel much larger aside from width a little.
Plus I got a free battery and 32gb SD card, so there's that too.

Yeah, we have pretty much the same requirements. Those kids move so fast, an average phone camera just won't cut it anymore. I'm tired of blurry pictures
I've used every Samsung Galaxy flagship until now. Forget Samsung and their Apple-chasing, anti-user policies. I need an SD card dangit!
Some phones take longer to get root than others, but being how this is LG's flagship, and LG has a growing followship, there will be root very soon. Just be patient! This phone kicks butt. I typically root to get easy tethering, ad removal, and bloatware removal, but this phone is damn good out of the box WITHOUT root! get it and don't look back! you won't regret it.

I'm almost ready to make my switch (from AT&T to Verizon). I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 that I put Candy5 ROM on it, and I really liked it, so I'm planning on trying that on an LG G4. I like the built in Privacy Guard and Ad Blocker....but as I read these forums it doesn't appear that Candy is developed for the G4. Advice...go with the G4 and see what other ROM's will be similar, or go with the G3 as I'm getting major discounts and a choice of phones? Thank you much.

TL;DR If you need a rom, wait, if you can get by without it, I highly suggest the G4.
At the moment, there are no ROMS for the Verizon variant of the LG g4. You can root and disable some of the bloat wear, but that is about it. We don't have custom roms because the bootloader is still locked and this prevents us from installing a custom recovery (such as TWRP) that would allow you to install a ROM (if one existed).
If your hopes are to put a ROM on the LG G4, then I suggest you wait until the bootloader unlock happens (if it ever does).
HOWEVER, and you can take this with a grain or cup or whatever of salt, I had a Note 3. The development on it was extremely slow because it too had a locked bootloader. We used a program called SafeStrap which allowed stock based ROMs to be installed and deployed to the device. Another option was FlashFire which allowed you to flash a ROM, backup, or update from inside the device. So there are options available to get a ROM on the device, if they existed, but they would have to be stock based.
Both of these tools helped to bring some ROMS to the Note 3, but never succeed in providing a CM based rom.
I am a heavy ROM freak. I love to flash new ROMs, everyday if I can get by with it, but I usually test them for a few weeks and document how the ROM functioned on the device.
Normally my major complaints (coming from samsung) would be the bloatware and the UI overlay that the mother company puts in, such as Touchwiz. But I think that LG did a REALLY good job of keeping the bloat down, the UI smooth and nonintrusive (the same CAN NOT BE SAID FOR VERIZON!!! Their bloatware is atrocious and they have ways of spying on your device to see what is running and if you are rooted), so even though LG did a great job Verizon screwed the pooch, as always.
I really enjoyed the stock elements that LG brought to the LG G4, and all in all I say its a good switch. The device has a good battery life with the stock battery, there are tweaks with Xposed to make the DPI a little more manageable, and the Phone, at least my phone, is super smooth with NO crashes to this day! If you can get by without a ROM, I think the G4 would be a good upgrade.
If you HAVE to have a custom ROM, I suggest you wait a little longer to see what happens with the Bootloader.
If you have the ability buy one of the H815 European versions of the G4, LG will allow you to unlock the bootloader on the device which will allow you to install TWRP, and there is already a ROM for it!

My sentiments exactly. I couldn't wait for the G4. Slick design, leather back, great camera. A class act phone, but I don't want to keep waiting, and hoping, that the bootloader gets unlocked. The MXP has almost the same specs, and I know development will be huge. Gotta feed the need.

I got 2 64gb's coming 9/21. Unless the G4 gets some development soon, that might be my last day using it.

Sucks for you. Mine comes next Thursday.
As others have said, there are no ROMs out there currently for the Verizon G4.
No roms yet for the LG G4 but honestly the stock rom is golden. I've been a fan of stock LG ROMS since the G2. It's just about as close to vanilla as you're going to get.
Your best bet is to root, debloat, then install xposed, change your launcher to Google Now Launcher, then install the GEL xposed app (to change grid sizes, tweaks to launcher, etc).

Huh? I'm sorry, but LG is one of the furthest from stock Android out there.
Motorola and Sony are much closer to stock.

LG is much closer to stock than HTC or Samsung. The last moto x i played on felt identical to stock android so i assumed it was. Ive never had a sony.

Im also considering ditching my G4 for X Pure entirely because of the GUI and no root/roms. The GUI is not even close to vanilla. In fact from everything I've read on the forums the stock launcher was merely ported straight from the G3's KK ROM and doesn't include any/many updates for L. No support for native equalizer.
G4's battery life is mediocre at best, but receiving a free spare from LG and it being removable in general is a big plus. The display on the G4 is above average. If i could have an unlocked bootloader G4 with AOSP it would probably be perfect.

My Pure is being delivered today. I can't wait for the devs to get theirs, so I can start flashing ROMs again. It's been a long three months. :victory:

What color combination did you get? The Pure is really intriguing, but I want to see reviews first and make sure it gets rooted.

Just got the black/gray, and I'm not worried one bit about it getting rooted. With an unlockable bootloader I'm sure there will be mad development. I love my G4, but I'm not holding out much hope for the bootloader at this point.
Got my 32gb white/bamboo MXPE arriving on Friday... Goodbye G4! (Sorry to hijack the thread)
Getting rid of the g4 was hard, but the nexus 6 is working well at this point. I forgot how nice it is to have a working touch screen.

I'm tired of waiting also. The only thing that has prevented me from ordering the mxp so far is the possibility that the g4 pro is going to be an awesome phone. I'm sure it will have the same development issues as the g4 but if the spec rumors are close I might can live with it....lol
It kind of looks like everyone got rid of there G4? Or was it just not a very popular phone? I've been browsing through the topics a bit and there just doesn't seem to have been as much custom roms or kernels as with other phones in general..
Which is only convincing me more to get the new OnePlus..

It's not that we are getting rid of the G4 nor it is not popular, it is in fact a very good phone other than its terrible battery life. It's LG who makes us get rid of them. I had no intention to get an OnePlus 3T at all if it wasn't the infamous bootloop issue kicking in. Hope this answers your question.

They have horrible hardware. Its not if it will bootloop but when. My g4 of 2 years died the other day. Lol i got me a g5. No root no unlock no roms. Just the way i like it. Yea rite. This phone really wasnt popular cause of the horribly locked bootloaders. And hardware issues combined. Ure best bet would be to ditch it asap and get somthin else
It's a shame that LG seemingly supports few models like single SIM international version like the LG H815! For the long 2 years, dual sim didn't even get bootloader unlock! I should have got the LG H815 instead of the H818P. Now I'm aware that LG G6 single sim international version (LG H870) already having root, custom ROM as well as TWRP support! That'll be my next device.

yea im surprised lg doesnt punt software on thier batteries and devices to reconize official batteries and such
i just got a g5 and i cant say im not impressed cause i am but same thing here root on first version released and every one else is on the back burner now with absolutly no future
the g4 and g5 and any of lgs devices except certain models are dead ends now even g4 and hardware issues twrp bootloader unlock id buy another one i know i could get the rite model but shouldnt have too
lg made thereown bed they can sleep in it they want to sell more devices then.

You are from the lucky ones,but of course AT&T locked i suppose.
Many others,myself included,that we use AT&T unlocked and ULM versions,are still waiting for LG to keep its promise,but i am absolutely sure that this will remain a dream.
There is no chance i think,that LG will give us this promised android 10 update,after 1 year since its release.

We need LineageOS and someone who will support our phones.
The V35 is a great piece of hardware. It is sad that LG has abandonned it. Shabby software IMHO explains the dire state of LG's mobile division. The odds are good it will be shuttered, sold, or otherwise entirely different in the near future.
Getting LOS support going would be nice. Much of the foundation is in place with work on the sibling V40 and G7 phones. The prospects for it happening are low. The phone is dated so not attracting developers. To make matters worse, LOS is not a viable path forward for LG owners in USA. Carriers are shutting down 3G and redeploying the spectrum. LG's radio implementation is proprietary. Without reverse engineering or a change of heart by LG, the phones will not have VoLTE capability with LOS roms.
As for me, I keeping an eye on Sony's offerings. To LG ThinQ products I say no ThanQ.

Unfortunately i agree with you..LG abandoned V35 in its fake,except the Korean models.
Its been a few months since i put aside this wonderful device,as a back up.
I moved on with 1+7,as my daily driver,which is a really great device,got android 10 almost 1 year ago,and android 11 is on its way.
As a second device for professional reasons,i recently got a V50,which is a great device too,and even though it's a Sprint version,i use it in Europe where i live.
Immediately updated to android 10 from 9 and is going very strong.
Of course someone could say,why do you choose an LG device from the moment that the company announced its withdrawal from the smartphone industry?
I know the risks of my choice,mainly if something goes wrong and need repair,but till today,all my LG devices served me really well,despite the fact of luck of quick updates,in addition to other companies.

I didn't know that, I don't keep up much with tech news anymore. I get a phone that works for me, do the customizations I care about and forget about it. Anyways, sad to see their shutting down their phones unit without releasing 10 for us. And happy that I followed @cmrntnnr Korean Q guide a while ago.
i was looking to buy a V35 because price related to specs is awesome, but iirc, i could unlock bootloader but there is no custom ROM ?
GSI not supported on this phone ?

The phone is awesome hardware and android 9 isn't that bad. It's a trade-off.
I stuffed the Korean v350N android 10 in my US unlocked v35awm. All good and dandy, wifi calling working, 4G working just fine. But my car won't recognize its android auto link anymore. I get a black screen after plugging the phone to the car, even with all paired and stuff. Guess I'll back to android 9, even though the Korean 10 worked fine. But had no majors gains with Android 10, was just a test. Won't feel the downgrade much...
I also installed the Korean 10 ROM, and all is well except my mobile speed test has gone from 150/50 to 33/2 on TELUS in Canada. Any suggestions to fix this?

What i can tell is yes. But for now there's only one custom rom LOS18.1 but im not sure it's stable or not.. and yep no gsi on stock rom..
