I am hoping someone on Project Fi can provide insight. I am not able to make or receive calls on my P3XL which has Google Fi service.
What happened was that when I moved to Fi from TMO, I forgot to remove the SIM in the tray. But Fi worked fine with eSIM for 9 months since I moved to Fi Dec. Last week, I had to factory reset the phone because of an unrelated issue and at the fresh boot it found old TMO SIM in there and tried to activate it but gave up because I am not directly subscribed to TMO, although TMO is part of Fi MVNO as well.
I realized my mistake, took out the SIM and activated my eSIM. It showed successful activation for my number associated with the google account. But I can't make or receive calls. When I dial a number, it says "Service is restricted or unavailable" or "Could not complete call". When I dial my number from another phone, it says "Subscriber is not in active service".
Strangely, when I dial my wife's Fi number, it connects and we can talk. The number shown on her caller ID is same temp number (some Texas 817 number) Google Fi assigned to my phone on fresh boot until I enabled wifi, logged into my google account associated with Fi and actually activated Fi, at which point it successfully connected and activated my correct number. But no calls. The data works. SMS does not.
Has anybody seen anything like this? Google Fi support has not been able to help with this so far. The problem was reported on Fri last week and all I have gotten is "we are working on it". I have troubleshooted with them several times, clearing app caches/data, factory reset, safe modes, giving random permissions to fi, phone, google play services and unrestricting data access to all these google apps. But nothing works.
PS: The problem is independent of the OS. I have tried Pie and all recent Q Betas (4,5,6). Its the exact same result.
Does anybody have experience with Google FI support here? My service has been out since Aug 16, and all I get from a supervisor is that "a specialist is working on the case and wait for email from her". I have never had phone service broken for 12 days before ever.
Does anybody with experience with Google Fi support have any hints on how to get someone higher up get more attention to the case? This seems awfully long time for a specialist to figure out why my number is not in active service.
Does your FI number work on wifi?
Does your FI number work through Google Voice?
FI support hit the crapper earlier this year, which is on of the reasons I bailed for Visible. Which has worse support but better service and lower fees.
My recollection is that you just have to call them every day to get it fixed.

Neither. When I call a number, I get "Service is unavailable or restricted". When I call my number from my wife's, I get "Subscriber not in active service". The Google Fi app keeps insisting that I am activated and service is fully functional.

I did not receive any kind of visual voicemail on the Xperia Play 4G so I installed the Google Voice app and attempted to configure it to forward my voicemail to the Google Voice service. When selected, it notifies the user in a "Call settings error" dialog box that it "Could not retrieve and save current forwarding number settings" but it offers me the option to "Switch to a new provider anyway?" This, of course, means that it can't read the carrier voicemail number used currently and, thus, can't back it up. It would normally back it up so that it can restore it when you disable GV VM forwarding. Anyway, when I select it anyway, I get another "Call settings error" stating "Forwarding number change unsuccessful." and advising me to "Please contact your carrier if this problem persists."
Anyway, I tried contacting them and they just gave be a new phone which I now know has the same problem.
I tried restoring and reinstalling Google Voice. I Tried it on 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 both with fresh factory restores. Same result. Actually, you can see the service provider change from "My carrier" to Google Voice" the moment you tell it to change it anyway and it once crashed before giving the final error causing it to stay on "Google Voice." What's weider is that it often works even though the phone still thinks "My carrier" is my VM provider.
Anyway, I downloaded the "AT&T Messages" app it gave a similar error too! I'm not sure what it said beacuse I'm not going to reinstall it after something else weird that happened: Google Voice was somehow sending AT&T Messages my incoming text messages and I believe they started billing me for them even though I had it set to receive through the native Messaging app without forwarding (should be free). All I know is that I made a more than a few accidental carrier SMS messages this month when testing GV but that was probably about 15-20 messages and yet AT&T just notified me that I already reached over $20 in charges and that I had used it "excessively."
Now, I switched from an iPhone 4 and did not have voicemail at all for the first month. It could not be set up automatically by phone and required a phone representative to fix it. I'm pretty sure that it was a remanant of my previous iPhone plan's visual voicemail setup. I was using a different qualifying line on the family plan to get the contract setup and, even though they knew what I was doing, they reset that line's voicemail and left mine unuseable. I think there may be some remnant of the previous iPhone config mucking this up on their end and causing my current issues but they insist that they have done everything right.
I do currently have it working even though the phone still thinks that it is set to my carrier. I doubt that GV is integrating it as well as it could when it still thinks that (I probably can't call it from my dial pad, for example). The most immediate assistance would be attempting to do the same thing on AT&T with yours and reporting your results. Any other help, knowledge, or insight would also be appreciated. Thanks!
On my wife's GSM Galaxy Nexus, running JB 4.1.1, all incoming calls are getting forwarded directly to voicemail. I've tried quite a few things to remedy the issue, but to no avail. Here are some of the relevant details.
Phone worked fine for at least a week after the JB update.
She can place calls without any problem.
She can receive email and browse the web without issue, both on WiFi and on 3G/H.
I can forward her phone to our home number and the forwarding works perfectly.
We use Google Voice for our voicemail service. When I try to reset voicemail settings to our cellular carrier (AT&T), the phone does NOT seem to reset the voicemail numbers (they still appear as her Google Voice number). However, when I do remove Google Voice and then call the phone, I get a message that her voicemail is not set up. Which makes sense: we've never set up AT&T voicemail.
I've done a factory reset: calls still go straight to voicemail. And the voicemail number after a factory reset is STILL her Google Voice number.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Did you port the # to Google voice? I that would explain the settings sticking after reset.. It sounds like a GV issue and not a phone issue

No, we did not. I'd agree with you that it's a Google Voice issue...except everything was working fine up until one or two days ago. Calls both in and out worked without issue, as did voicemail.
Very strange. I'm going to contact AT&T to get their take on things.
AT&T seem to think its a bad SIM card. I'm going to pick up a new one tomorrow.
last time this happened my girlfriend somehow added me to the auto reject list lol

I'm not sure if you said calling to google voice number wouldn't work or calling the mobile number...
If it's the mobile, its not a gvoice issue..
I really would not think that a sim card would cause the problem itselt, but it might reset your forwarding options... I dont know.. you can try this if it doesn't work...
dial #002#
this will reset ALL of your call forwarding options just in case something is wrong / corrupt there... after you verify that calls to the number work, then you can setup the conditional call forwarding..

Great idea. I thought something similar, but when I try to enter any call forwarding codes (like the one above), I get "Call forwarding connection problem or invalid MMI code." Again, this leads me to think that perhaps the sim card really is the problem. If not, it's an AT&T network setup issue.
I'll post again later today with whatever progress I've made. Thanks for trying to help!
Picked up a new sim card, and it completely resolved the problem. Strange, but whatever. As long as the wife's phone is working, all is well!
Hello fellow Nexus 5Xers,
Just got the 5X and have been getting everything up and running these last few days. Previously, I had the old Nexus 5 on AT&T and am getting things set up on the new phone, also with AT&T. My goal is to try to get Google Voice VM set up.
I went through the normal voicemail set up on the Google Voice app, but noticed that I was not getting voicemails when people called. I tried calling my number on another line and got the "This number is out of order error message". I called AT&T and got set up with a carrier VM just to make sure I had something that worked.
I went back to the Google voice settings page on the website and re-registered my phone and tried to run the code that would forward calls to my Google Voice number. When I entered the code, it says "MMI Code started" and then comes back with "Call forwarding Connection problem or invalid MMI code".
I then tried re-doing set up on the Google Voice App on Android and still no luck. Then I tried setting up a conditional forwarding in the settings menu of the Phone under "Calls>Call Forwarding" to my google voice number and I get a "Call settings error, Unexepcted response from network".
Anyone else experiencing this? Any ideas on what to do to get Google Voice VM set up?
I'm getting the same exact problem and also on ATT. Can't seem to figure out what the issue is...
Works fine here just check on computer to forward calls use your at&t number
Try putting your SIM in another phone in order to issue the conditional call forwarding command, then put it back in the 5X. This is a network dependent feature which should continue to be in force until you cancel it (regardless of which phone you are using).

Thanks for the reply, TLopez. Are you using AT&T? When I go on my account page for AT&T, it says you have to enter a set of codes on the phone to set it up and can't set it up on-line.

I am in the same boat as you. As far as I can tell the problem is with the way AT&T configured the account when we swapped SIM's. (Since you went from a Nexus 5 to the 5X, I'm assuming that you had AT&T give you a new Nano-SIM to replace the Micro-SIM that was in your 5).
From what I have been able to piece together all Smart Phone Voicemail accounts being provisioned now by AT&T are setup with Visual Voicemail and that setup is not allowing the provisional forwarding that Google Voice requires to become the Voicemail provider for the number.
When I look on my 5X under Dialer App -> Menu -> Settings -> Calls -> Call Forwarding
the Settings for "When busy", "When unanswered ", & "When unavailable" are "Off", "Off", & "Disabled".
When I look at these setting on an AT&T phone that was provisioned a few years ago, those setting show the AT&T voicemail access number.
I've talked to three different CSR's on the business account line and they had no useful information.
Same issue
I am also having the same issue. I switched from Nexus 4 to Nexus 5X and it seems AT&T network is not allowing call forwarding to be enabled.
Here is what I have tried but still now fix:
1.) Uninstall and reinstall Google Voice app.
2.) Uninstall, reboot, and reinstall Goofle Voice app.
3.) Deactivate and reactivate using instructions on voice.google.com
4.) Try programming forwarding number under Call Settings menu.
5.) Talk to AT&T chat support. No luck...insist the phone is unsupported on network data protocols or some other BS.
Any information would be helpful.
I remember from the past that even if att set has errors on the phone, that it worked anyway. I have been using gv since the nexus one and it was sketchy back then. I havent' had any problems for a couple years. The new sim might F it up. But it works for me. I have been involved in many GV threads in the past. It might help to read some of those. The web interface GV is the key. It has mostly to do with the settings on your end, not att. They don't know **** all anyway.
I'm going to search and see what I can find. I have used GV and att exclusively since 2010, and It's never really failed.
To be clear, I'm using a 5x with an Att SIM, I do not have GV installed on the N5X and things work normally, both GV # and SIM associated att # both go to GV VM and Notifications come through hangouts and both numbers ring the handset.
post here for Q's about web interface. I never touched the n5x voicemail settings. on the handset. it just worked from the beginning.

But you didn't change SIMs when you moved to your 5X, correct?
That has been my experience with GV and new phones in the past. As long as the account was configured correctly on the previous phone, there was nothing that needed to be done on the new phone, since all the conditional forwarding was already setup on the network side.
yes, correct. I was just trying to say that it's possible and you don't need to call att to make it happen. Under my forwarding menu
always forward =off
when busy, unanswered, unreachable = my gv #

Yea, if I go into that menu and try to change the values it just returns an error, I am not able to change the values from "off" and "disabled". And even with those showing "off" and "disabled" AT&T's voicemail works correctly.
what about voicemail setting? I have "your carrier" not gv.

I have tried both setting, it makes no difference.
I even have had AT&T turn off VM on the network side, that didn't help at all.
At this point I'm not sure if "Conditional forwarding" is not available on newly provisioned lines or that the Nexus 5X doesn't have the tools to setup conditional forwarding.
I have a SIM adapter on order, when that comes in I will try to do the GV configuration on my old HTC M7 to see if that makes any difference. I don't really think that it will, but it sounds like a less frustrating step than calling into AT&T repeatedly until I happen across a CSR that knows how to setup conditional forwarding on the network side. (Or that knows conclusively that it is not possible on new SIM activations.)
read this page. it's something easy, it has to be. I have set up other people on gv with the same phones. Never had a problem but its in the details.
I do wish you good luck.

So yes, in this case, I can't seem to add my Google Voice number to those fields. When I go in, all fields are "off" and if I try to input my GV number for any of them, I get an error that states "Unexpected response from network"
Even if I try to input another number altogether, i.e. my home or work number, I get the same response.
I was having this same issue with my Nexus 5X using a new At&t nano sim. To resolve it, I had to call and speak with Customer Service. I explained that I wanted to setup Conditional Call Forwarding for all three conditions (busy, unreachable, unanswered) and they were able make the changes. I checked the Call Forwarding Settings screen immediately after hanging up and confirmed the correct Forwarding # was in place.

I have changed phones between iOS and Android several times, never had issues with GV until my first Nexus (which is the 5x). The MMI codes that GV gives would not work, and from the call screen, if i clicked on the (...) in the top right corner i could go to 'settings', but it still wouln't take my GV number.
I spent 2 hours with ATT, she was very very helpful and got "advanced support" to help. Eventually, ATT changed all 3 of my "conditional call forwarding" to my GV number, but it still went to my ATT voicemail. ATT lady started to conference Google in for help. I had to leave the call, but several hours later i started getting VM thru GV. I'm not sure if the conditional call forwarding numbers just needed time to activate across the network (ATT Lady said that it didn't), or if when she spoke to Google they figured something out.
Good luck everyone. The problem is resolvable with ATT help, I wish I had more details to provide.
I just called my 5X and I got my GV message for when a call is missed. I am coming from a Moto X 2014 that had GV setup as the VM and all I did was move my sim from that phone to the 5X. Not that this helps anyone with a problem, but figured I would chime in on my scenario that does work.
I was having same issue... Seems the only way to resolve is to contact Att. The CSR I spoke with on chat was very knowledgeable of this issue and resolved it in less than 5 minutes. Even still... It's an unnecessary inconvenience
I've had this issue in the past, it randomly started happening on my prior M8. Nothing worked...no MMI codes, online meetings, manual call forward numbers, nothing...I ended up getting it resolved by having ATT advanced technical support manually edit the forwarding scenarios and numbers on the back end. Even they were confused as to why it was happening, and I had to get to the second level of advanced support before the technician had the correct access rights to edit the numbers. This was back in July-ish, and they had been apparently going through some significant "non-cystomer-facing" changes to their backbend VM systems.. All GV working fine for me asof now, and I'm still using the same Nano-SIM card on my 5X that cane from that M8.
I just bought a Pixel XL on eBay and I'm considering switching from AT&T to Project Fi. I have pretty good AT&T coverage where I live, and I'm not sure how good the Fi coverage will be. I'm a long-term user of Google Voice and my main Google account is a G Suites account. I know that I will lose some GV features if I port my GV number to Fi, so I don't want to do that. One of the main things I want Project Fi for is to use for international travel.
Here are some options I'm considering. Please tell me if these will work:
Option 1: Get Project Fi on a separate Google account, then sign into Google Apps using my old account. I think I might have problems forwarding calls from my old GV number to my Project Fi number. Also, if I do this, is there any way I can dial out from Project Fi and show my old GV number as the calling number or send texts from my old GV number?
Option 2: Get a Project Fi account and use it only for international traveling. I know that the telephone number won't be the same as my US number, but that won't be a big problem. Is it possible to set up a new Project Fi account for a month and then shut it down? If that would work, I could just subscribe again when I need it and continue using my old AT&T account when I'm in the US.
Any ideas or suggestions about this would be appreciated!
I spent 20 minute writing a reply and my ****ty work internet borked when I submitted and everything was lost. So, Short answers:
1a) no, you can't forward from one GV# to another or from Project Fi to GV. You can however set up an intermediate # through someplace like callcentric, forward your old # to that, then have that forwarded to your new #.
1b) you can have your old # show up, but only if you use hangouts dialer (uses data for calls) when calling out. Calling via the mobile network will show your projec t fi #.
2)Yes you can cancel immediately if you want, but if you travel a lot, you might rather use the "pause service" feature that is built right into the Project Fi App.
Thanks a lot for your reply! The pause service feature sounds like just what I was looking for. I think I'm going to get a Fi account with a different GV number and try it out. That way , I can see test the coverage and see how well it works in the US and for international traveling. If Google manages to get the GV app working for Fi, I will switch my main GV number to Fi.

MTNTNBKR reply is correct.
I have been a FI user since they started. Coverage has been excellent in USA ( I am in Dallas area..only place in Texas I have dropped out is deep up into the rural panhandle).
Customer service is wonderful...the few times I have had trouble it is easy to logon from notebook, outline your question ONCE, and ask them to call ME. The callback has never been more than 45 seconds later, and it has always been someone that actually was qualified to answer my question. Put this against my Sprint or ATT horrible customer service experience...call in, input all your contact info, explain it to EACH of the 3 levels of service person you have to go through and spend hours on hold, and FI is a clear winner.
International travel is simply fantastic. No extra fees, same $10 per GB (it does cost $.20 per minute to call on local cell, but free if you use wifi), and it simply works. I have landed in Dominican Republic, Mexico City, Bali, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong..and every one is the same experience. Fire up the phone while the plane is taxiing and you get a welcome message..."Welcome to _______, your project FI number is now active". You can use google maps, UBER, everything right away, and all your apps and your regular number just work. Simple.
I use 4 different Google Voice numbers...home, and 3 separate businesses, all run through Hangouts dialer with different ring tones assigned to each. Calls come in from each of those just fine. You don't actually "forward" to your FI number, just set up the GV numbers to answer in Hangouts. Oddly, I have had to go in a couple of times and re-select RING on those lines, but other than that it works fine.
That's good information. How well does your Project Fi work with apps on other devices. For example, I use my GV number to text and receive calls on my phone, my Android tablet, and my Windows desktop PC. Is there any major change in operation when you switch your GV number to Pi?
nevermind
I have used google voice for my business for the past 8 years or so and never had issues w/ GV voicemails until recently. Now, when I get a call on my GV # and don't answer, the call goes directly to my carrier voicemail w/ no way to fix - I've tried everything. Anyone else? Is this a back-end issue w/ Google?
edit: the verizon call forwarding does work but it forwards all calls to my GV voicemail now w/ no way to seperate between personal and business.

I haven't had any issues, I use google voice as a second phone number and it's been working fine. I just popped my sim out of my old phone, put it in the new pixel 3 and installed google voice and I was back up and running, didn't do a thing else. I also use it for my voicemail though, so I actually want the situation in your edit...
Are you somehow forwarding from google voice back to your carrier number? Without any forwarding at all it should behave as 2 totally separate lines, carrier # to carrier voicemail, gv # to gv voicemail, so if gv is going to carrier voicemail then there's something somewhere telling it to... I'm not aware of any backend problems with Google in this stuff, mine seems to be working fine, but you could try their support maybe...

Thanks for chiming in. Yeah I didn't port my number so I have the gv # forwarded to my carrier number. Is there another way to keep them both separate?
I'm not sure, I think just forwarding one to another is the only way to get them commingled like that...
Same issue here. Worked fine for the last 5+ years. As soon as I got the 3 that was the end of that. Can't get it working no matter what I try.
I have the same issue: calls don't ring and go straight to voicemail. Do Not Disturb is off. Verizon is my carrier.
I've used GV for years with several phones: 2XL, Moto X, LG G3.
As an aside, I'm noticing missed notifications using other apps, too. I'm wondering if it has to do with Android 9 notifications?
I ported my number to GV about a year ago. I use it for everything, calls, texting , and voicemail. I knew it was working, but I just tested to double check, and all is well.
Go to voice.google.com on a web browser. Click side menu select legacy. Click settings gear. Deactivate Google voicemail on this phone (your mobile). Then activate Google voicemail mail on said phone. Dial the code and it should work. I had to do this yesterday on att
