Randomly unresponsive Samsung S10 plus  - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Guides, News, & Discussion

dear community
I bought a new S10 plus from a Hong Kong seller online, I had the initial screen greeting in traditional Chinese where I used my other phone to translate and chose English language (noticed that the device is probably a Taiwanese version)
First few hours were fine until June 2019 was installed.
Random unresponsiveness and strange behavior (Android status bar will pull down on its own, back and home virtual buttons do not work all the time, non responsive touch screen) This will go away if I lock then unlock and will come back again or sometimes not.
This became an annoyance as it will randomly either make the screen unresponsive or ultra responsive repeating my single touch commands which is a real pain, I hope you get the picture?
I decided to do a RESET, this all went well until it rebooted to a screen where it said something in traditional Chinese and a tick next to SIM1 (I forgot my UK sim card inside) so I clicked on next
it then rebooted and with a greeting in English!
here I went through the setting up and the wireless then it could not connect to Google (how bizarre)
I had to switch off Wifi to be able to get to final home screen, then I switched Wifi back on
Google services were installed however I was unable to add my Google account
also, the random unresponsiveness came back
I tried to hard reset, now without the sim card, same as above I could not add a Google account it does time out....
I can open a browser and open web pages no problem so there is internet connection
my main problem is that the device is not working properly and I cannot add a Google account
researched the forum and I though I might give it a try and re flash official firmware.
I made short videos of this strange behavior of the phone, where I will post them if needed.
My questions are :
would flashing an official firmware solve my problem?
which version I should flash, BRI (Taiwanese) or XEU (UK EU) ?
here is my SW ver.
SAOMC_SM-F975F_OXM_XEU_PP_0018
R58M36793AR
XEU/XEU,BRI/BRI
Many thanks for your advise!

Update:
I have flashed the OXM XEU version from this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/s10-plus/how-to/asba-official-stock-fw-update-odin-t3908710
Resolved:
I can now add a Google account, the problem was that I have to insert my SIM in order for this to work
Main problem:
random issues with screen and weird behavior: as I mentioned before, I get multiple registers for one touch which is extremely annoying when trying the simplest of text typing including typing wrong passwords!
the status bar is another annoyance which will drop down randomly and unexpectedly
current version:
G975FXXU2ASF3/G975FOXM2ASF3/G975FXXU2aASF3
SW ver.
SAOMC_SM-G975F_OXM_XEU_PP_0018
R58M36793AR
XEU/XEU,XEU/BRI
any ideas?

From the CSC OMC file of the UK rom get the .pit file via WinRAR.In odin put AP in AP slot,BL in BL slot,CP in CP slot and CSC in CSC slot(CSC not Homr_CSC).In pit section of Odin put the file which you got there.P.s. Use PatcheD Odin by 3B.

Hi ExtremeGrief
I did exactly what you suggested, used patched Odin by 3B from here and did extract the .pit file which in the ROM I chose reads:
BEYOND2LTE_EUR_OPEN.pit
ROM was loaded in 05:49 min/sec, however I still have the 2 issues:
1-upon fresh reset of android first setup screens will not progress to home screen unless I disable wifi (it will get stuck forever in the Checking Info screen), also I have to insert my SIM in order for me to add a Google account which is mad. so in the future if I sell my phone the next person will have hard time figuring out why they cant add google account!
2-crazy randomly popping up android status bar is back alongside with the unresponsive screen where it will get fix temporarily by pressing power button to lock then unlock, overall operation of the phone is a pain with constant random touch freezes
any other ideas on what is happening with this phone, is it hardware or software related?
shall I start RMA with the seller or try other fixes?

Are u charging ur mobile while using it??? When these touches appear?? Are you using a genuine charger... Dial *#0*# and go to touch from the menu... Swipe your finger through all the zones to check if touch panel is okay

no, I am not charging it while using it and the charger is a genuine one, I usually use wireless charging for my phones.
These random glitches in the status bar and unresponsive screen touch are random but they are noticeable and I have recorded a video of this strange behavior.
Now using this GSM test screen, there are no issues with the panel, all is registering okay and the weird part that the status bar is not acting crazy or showing up, also back/home buttons are working perfectly in this mode
any other ideas?

here are links for some videos I made to show the issues:
unresponsive screen video1
unresponsive screen video2
Status bar drops on its own!
these links are available for 6 days, I will refresh the links if necessary

Hi,next time you respond to my replies just quote me.Try to make the same thing that I told you to do before, but this time in Options tab in Odin 3B select:Nand Erase All,Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time.If this dors not work then it is a hardware problem but try this anyway.Maybe the seller that you bought the phone from put some malicious software on a hidden partition of the phone.Nand erase all wipes EVERY partition and writes it again.Hope this helps!

I had to disable wifi to get to home screen then I re-enabled it, it did update all Google services.
my only problem now is that with the phone without a SIM, I cannot add Google account! it is stuck in the "Checking Info" screen.
any ideas?

Did your try clearing your cache? Normally if your had reset then you won't have to do this... But try it and see.... Shutdown your phone then pressing bixby button + vol up + power until u see recovery then clear cache.
If it's still can't resolve then get help from samsung service center.

thank you for trying to help me.
this is the weirdest issue I had so far with any phone! seems that getting phones from another region and specially China is a journey into a dark tunnel!
I thought the same as you, maybe a malicious software, the phone was spanking new and it was sealed with a guarantee sticker, mind you if they can clone entire buildings they can do anything.
I have started an RMA process with the seller, whats funny is that their T&C state that they reserve the right to not honor the claim if its a firmware issue etc plus they would charge 10% off price for restocking fees.
Any other ideas from anyone?

I just called the service centre near to my city in the UK, basically what he said is that I can bring the phone for them to have a look at however it being made for another region (Hong Kong/Taiwan whatever) then the software he said or parts required are difficult to get hold of and he advised me to contact the seller.
he said that probably I locked the device by mistake if I cannot add Google account.
I am going to visit them (1:30 hour drive) now to see what they can make off it.
not sure what happened nor why this all happening, for my phone software is black magic, I can happily do tinker with PCs etc and even do some basic Linux etc, I am not entirely sure what is making this phone locked and how to get rid of this or even find out if any of the hardware elements is faulty.

latest update:
I spent 3 hours round trip by car and got to the official Samsung service centre, they checked my phone and said that it is very likely the phone is genuine (not sure why they are not 100% sure) and it is designated as shipping country: Taiwan with a model of SM-G975FCKGBRI, however the product date is 1/9/2015! compared to my aging genuine UK version S7 Edge which has a product date of 1/2/2016
when I said that the phone was new in case with a warranty sticker, he said that anyone can do this including Samsung where they refurbish phones and reseal them and apply the special silver warranty sticker and goes back into sale!
upon inspection he confirmed that the right middle section of the touch screen is faulty
what is more bizarre is that he managed to log into google using their wifi connection no problem.
lastly, he said I have two options + last resort:
1-they will repair this on my cost and it could take weeks or months to get the parts for this specific Taiwanese phone (I never heard of this before specially that digitizer is just a component)
2-return it to original seller for them to replace/repair or refund
3-call Samsung care UK and try to "convince" them to take this handset and repair it eventually FOC
Now, I don't know what the Hong Kong seller has done previously to this phone if they had unsealed it then applied a warranty sticker (says Samsung etc..), what I know for sure is that I resisted common sense and ordered this phone overseas to save few bucks
to summarize, I will give up and RMA this phone maybe the seller can replace/repair etc.
thanks all for your help

I just found out why I could not log into Google and the request was timing out!
I have my router at home setup with a DNS server of 9.9.9.9 (as I dont want Google to snoop over all my activity outside Chrome) therefore the phone was not able to connect to Google server for some bizarre reason even though my web browsers have no problem using Quad9 to resolve google services.
I set the DNS up back to 8.8.8.8 and now my phone can instantly log into google!
hope this helps someone who tinkers with their DNS settings on their routers

[Q] Backup contacts after water damage?

My dads phone went in the washing machine, it was put in rice for about 48 hours or more, it turns on but the touch screen doesn't work but menu, home, back, vol up&down and power of course. At first it wouldn't charge and my PC wouldn't notice it even plugged in so I opened it up and there was lots of corrosion on most of the connections on the motherboard so I cleaned them the best I could with 70% alcohol and cue tips and now it charges but my PC still doesn't see it. I am able to get into download mode just fine. It is also a bone stock t-mobile T999, never rooted or anything. I also put his motherboard into my T999 to see if the touch screen would work and it didn't. Is it possible to save all his contacts?
And no sync was setup, but I set it up on his new note 3.
Has your dad ever logged into the phone with a Gmail account ? If so please go to
contacts.google.com
and log on using that account.

No, that's what I men't by no sync, he didn't even have a gmail till made one for his note 3.
Touch Screen may not work but what happened when you put the motherboard in your phone ? Also when you connect to PC as-is ? Does PC show up as QSUB_XXXXX something or none at all ?

Well there was no difference when the motherboard was in my phone, my touch screen wasn't picking up anything with his motherboard. When I plug it in to my PC nothing pops up in device manager or my computer and odin doesn't see it either, this is with it sitting at the lock screen.
I believe, the phone has to be unlocked for the pc to register MTP device.
If it still does not register after that attempt, then you probably may have to subject it to a JTAG although not high hopes. You could also take it to a Samsung service centre, where they can read the memory by other means. I am sorry I am at a loss of expertise in that regard.

Well idk how to "subject it to a JTAG" but there are no Samsung service centre's in Hawaii so I called Samsung and the lady just read some trouble shooting steps after I explained my issue and she was no help at all but I guess i'm just gonna send it in for a 100 dollar refund cause I magically made the red water indicators white again but thanks anyway.
I am sorry to hear that. Ah well if you don't have service centre, then I guess, your options are limited.
Do please explore T-Mo JUMP upgrade.

Asus Zenfone 2 Random Reboot resolved
Hi Guys,
I have the same Zenfone 2 4GB RAM 64GB ROM.
The restart issue is due to the settings in Accessibility options.
Check which are all switched on:
The culprit is Switch Access Option - If you have it enabled then the mobile randomly boots and reboots. Disable this and you should be good.
I have lastpass enabled in the accessibility options and it does not cause the phone to restart.
Any number of replacement or doing factory reset will not resolve this for you.
Cheers... this issue aside... the phone is a beast.
Do share if this issue is resolved by applying the above mentioned solution.

I've got the same problem, but to ASUS USA: this problem is with your overwriting of the stock Google Android OS. STOP your "stabilityenhancements" and just release Android 6.0 Marshmallow FTOA! Then we can catch up with the rest of the world. There is no longer any good excuse or reason for your year-long delay; except for you filling THAT up with useless bloatware that NOBODY uses and seems to be the problem!
Asking any of us to have to go through your well known arduous replacement RMA process for ruining our devices with your narcissism is totally unacceptable behavior and insulting to the people who are paying you millions of dollars.

I couldn't agree more, it's really bad form that it has taken so long for a proper non-bloatware update. Being stuck on 5.0 is terrible.
I had the same issue. Whenever I tried to do something with the phone, was rebooting. I was not even able to install the update to Android 6.0. I uninstalled some apps, and then was ok, it was no longer rebooting. So, uninstalling some apps can help. I have a Zenfone 2 Laser

Topic : 1 .Product Quality
Description :
Dear SIR,
I wish to complain about ASUS ZEN PHONE 2 IMEI/Serial No: 352649075366383 that I purchased on 12.07.2015 BAP, jodhpur Rajasthan
I am complaining because the phone show number of different faults with a interval and repaired 5 time in a year, service center is 450 km far from my location. To resolve this problem I would like you to know your opinion because this mobile frustrated me.
When I first learned of this problem, I contacted at jaipur then as per customer care guidance at jodhpur after that again jaipur but problem is persist same .( total visit 9 time at service center), and was told that nothing permanent could be done about this problem. I believe that this response is unfair because i have also asus laptop but there are not any problem.
And at the time of submission of phone at jaipur service center back cover get damage by the hand of madam which is setting on counter after that the response given by mam is irresponsible.
Now i receive phone form service center and found second sim problem, vibration problem , g snser problem again, pls take a hard desion against service center and resolve the problem.
I look forward to hearing from you as soon as possible to resolve this problem with replacement. If I do not hear from you within time I will file complaints with the appropriate consumer agencies and consider my legal alternatives. I will enclosing copies of my receipt at next time and hang the mobile on road with reflector for traffic facility. You may be contacted at the above address and phone number.
this time my warranty exceed for 1 month but problem is same.
But mobile does not repaired yet now.
Restarting problem
I had the same issue with my ASUS Zenfone(ZE551ML) and the only method worked for me was to install cyanogenMod (CustomROM) onto my phone.
Steps-

3-Download the firmware and gapps{Platform-x86 Android-6.0 variant- (prefrence of your choice) }
4-Save it on SD card .
In TWRP recovery-
(IF BACKUP REQUIRED)
Steps-
TWRP recovery>Backup>CHECK-System,DATA,Boot.
Select storage MicroSD
SWIPE TO BACKUP
Install cyanogenMod -
Steps-
Install>Select Storage>MicroSD
find your ROM swipe to install
Find GAPPS swipe to install
Wipe cache/dalvik
System reboot.
your phone will boot into your cyanogenROM.
For any queries just google it man !!!:good::good:

Verizon S8+ no mobile network

Ladies and gentlemen of XDA, I have come before you today to admit to my defeat.
I have scoured the internet and tried all kinds of fixes and such and still no luck. So hopefully someone here can help me figure out what I'm missing.
I rooted both my husband's and my G955u. Both of our phones took the root well and were performing spectacularly. Then, randomly one day, something went glitchy with my phone. For some reason or another, I ended up putting the phone in airplane mode. For the life of me I can't remember why. The airplane mode icon would not turn back off. I turned the phone off and back on. Each time, I see the signal connection icon at the top, but there are no bars filling it. I cannot call, text, or use data unless I am connected to wifi.
I unrooted and flashed back to stock. No fix. I applied other root methods. Still no fix. Factory reset, cleared cache, took sim card out. Still nothing. Sim card works fine in other devices and no sim card will work in my phone. I have flashed each and every stock (2bqk5, 2bql1, 2brb1) with no luck. Took it all the way back down to 2bqk5 and allowed ota updates all the way to 2brb1. Still nothing.
Had an error for a while that when I entered recovery mode, it would either show no command or error followed by a screen saying that it had failed to unmount my EFS. That screen isn't showing up anymore, so I somehow fixed that. My IMEI and SN are both showing and are both correct. Phone network shows unknown. Mobile network shows state as connected. Mobile network type shows as IWLAN. Not Roaming, IMS registration status is on.
I have tried to flash the combined tar file of the modem and the Nonhlos.bin I extracted from my stock bql1 files. Flashed through Odin, still no fix.
I am at a total and complete loss. I don't know what else to try. Husband's root is still intact and working great. Can anyone help a noob figure out what I haven't done yet? I'm sure I'm missing something stupidly obvious. Any and all help is greatly appreciated and stories of your epicness will be told by my children's children of the time I was saved from the purgatory that is no cell service by the heroes of XDA.

Solved on my own. Downloaded the app shortcut master and launched secret menu #27663368378. Chose options 2,1,2,3,4 and restarted phone and I had network access again. Hooray!

Was just about to post about this, I too have been experiencing those issues, difference is my phone has not been rooted. Has the issue completely resolved?
Yes. That completely fixed my issues. You may not have to root to fix the issue if you can find the right secret code to access the service mode menu. But once the nv was restored, all was golden.
This is the screen you need to get to.
wow you went through all those downloads and flashes !
This was my first time ever rooting. I had no idea what I was doing or what exactly I needed to fix it I just knew I was pissed to high heaven and refusing to pay 200 for the replacement phone they said I needed.
Originally, geek squad tried to say that I had a chip failure due to the mipi device fail that showed up on menu *#0011#. But I didn't buy it. Turns out it wasn't a hardware issue. Just the NV data being a butt. Saved me 200 bucks. I'll take 50 million menus, flashes, and downloads over that anyway. That's what unlimited data and pdanet hotspot tether is for.
What did the menu have in it? I'm having a similar problem with not connecting to the network (unroot), but on my Galaxy S7. I've tried a million things, only to find out the "MIPI DEVICE FAILED".

I have the exact same issue on my S8+, MIPI device fail and can't get any network signal. On xfinity mobile here. I can't get that menu you're talking about, I downloaded Shortcut master and launch the menu you mentioned in your first post but it won't launch. Do I have to be rooted? Please help!
Mipi device failed. change the charging port and maybe it solves it. it has happened to me with a s7 and a note 8 and I have solved it by changing the loading port

I'm having this issue in this model and the menu "*#27663368378# Chose options 2,1,2,3,4 and restarted phone" didn't solve, it will be necessary to change or reconnect the charging port or other part?

Help! Verizon Note 4 random network drop...

I apologize in advance for the long read.
I recently activated Verizon service on a Note 4 that has been sitting unused since the Note 8 came out. The Note 4 is in perfect physical condition, with no scratches on the screen or body, and has been in a protective case since new. I did replace the battery in it prior to activation, as I expect for the life to have been deteriorated.
I did a factory reset and inserted my Verizon SIM card, and it worked perfectly. I installed my everyday apps and a few games on the phone, and I used it without any issue for about a week. During that time, it did install a couple of OTA updates, but I expected that since it had been "off service" for a few years.
After that first week, I put the SIM card back in my NOTE 8 for a couple of days, after which I went back to the Note 4. Initially, 4G data and cell service worked, but within the same day I started having service drops. If I was on the phone and a call dropped, it would show an error message saying "No SIM / SIM Error".
Her is what I have attempted so far:
First, I replaced the SIM with a new one. There was difference in the frequency of the random service drop.
When that did nothing, I assumed that one of the OTA updates from the prior week had done something to modem / radio. The phone was on 6.0.1 at that time. I unlocked the bootloader and installed TWRP, and first tried downgrading to stock 5.1.1, then to a "modified 5.1.1, then to CM 13, and now Lineage 15 (frequently factory reset / cache wipe. There has not been an improvement (or reduction) to the random service drop.
Yesterday, I happened to be on My Verizon online, and I had a message showing that Verizon no long had the information on my phone (IMEI), and requesting that I open a Chat Window to update my info. At this point, the Note 4 is still running the Lineage 15.1. The Verizon team member asked me for the IMEI, and when I looked under the settings, it said "None" under IMEI. In a quick search, I found a forum on Lineage 15.1 that said turning of the screen lock and rebooting the phone will reload the SIM and IMEI info. That worked, and I was able to view the IMEI and verify connection. I explained my issue with the Verizon support, and she said everything appeared to be good on her end. Over the course of 15 minutes, we tested my connection and it worked. About 30 minutes after that, it dropped service again.
Finally, here is where it is at now:
I start with no service. If I do nothing but restart the phone, it will show LTE service for 2 or 3 seconds, then nothing. If I remove and reinstall the SIM, I will get the same 2 or 3 seconds, then nothing. If I turn Airplane Mode on and off, that does not reconnect the service. If I change the lock screen security to "None" and restart the phone, there is no service, but if I set Screen Lock to "Swipe" and restart the phone, I will have LTE service for at least 30 - 45 minutes before it drops, sometimes a few hours. When it does drop, it does not come back on it's own. The only way I have found to get it back it to "Screen Lock - None, reboot, Screen Lock - swipe, reboot".
Will replacing the modem fix the problem? Is there a specific modem that I need to match up to the ROM? Thanks!

I think you might be dealing with 2 separate issues. I'm kind of guessing about the first issue but the second is a common problem.
I think the original problem is that your sim card is not making a good contact in the sim slot. You could try putting a think piece of cardboard or something that will press the sim card to the sim slot contacts (maybe check to make sure that there isn't any dirt on the contacts but from the sound of it I'm guessing your phone is pretty clean).
The second problem is that all of the aosp roms have varying degrees of signal loss that occurs. Some people have a lot and some not as much, but everyone is affected in some way with what people have been referring to as "sim death".
My suggestion would be to run a stock or modified stock rom until you get your sim problem straightened out and then if you still want to switch to an aosp rom then at least you'll know that any further problems are just the normal sim death that occurs from time to time with those types of roms.
If you've already updated your bootloader to a 6.0.1 version you can flash the modified stock rom that I put together. I haven't had any signal/sim issues at all with that and no reports of it. Like I mentioned before though, the only caveat is that it needs to be on a bootloader that is at least CPD1 or newer. If it's not then your wifi won't work.
Rom link If you're interested.

Thank you for the reply. I think that you may be onto something with both issues. After posting this question today, I did examine the SIM slot, and although all of the pins looked good, and no dust or debris was visible, the metal guide over the SIM did feel slightly loose from the card. I did put in a thin shim, and the significantly improved the time that the phone stays connected. If that was a true issue, along with the possibility of the ROM causing a separate cause, I am absolutely interested on going back to a stock (or modified stock) ROM. The only reason that I did what I did was an attempt to fix the connectivity issue.
Thanks for your help. I will give your ROM a try and let you know how it works.

Redmi note 8t stucked at stock recovery mode, presumably due a hardware wear

Hi there!
So, my brother got this model back in 2019 iirc, it has worked great so far until he changed to the note 10 and my father got the first one as his "new" main phone, it has been working fine so far until today, it rebooted into this mode (i assumed it was the recovery, where it shows "Reboot","Wipe data" and "Connect with MiAssistant"), apparently my father did not touched the phone to do that.
So, that being said, i am 99% sure the hardware buttons are overused so those are just malfunctioning, and since the warranty is already voided due to the 3 years that have passed since the device was purchased, im no longer able to repair it via official repair department or something. Is there some sort of tool like ifixit ones i could use to fix this or is it better to just get a new phone? i would like to get some data back like whatsapp history so he wont lose that much information, is there a workaround for that?
edit: i cant get away from that mode, everytime i reboot the phone it gets stucked there, even inside it i see that the options are selected on their own without me selecting none of them, im just trying to avoid the wipe data one so i can still get something saved
