HELP: Adguard app choking my Internet on The P3XL - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

Hey guys,
Been using the Adguard app for a long long time and have a lifetime license. Used it on all my last devices, including the Pixel 2 XL.
I have never had a single problem. It always worked wonders.
Until now, on my P3XL it totally chokes my internet. Making loading times / refresh times literally minutes.
It makes Chrome (Beta) / Instagram / Twitter / or any other app that needs the net virtually unusable.
I am dumbstruck by this. I cannot figure out why this happens.
With Adguard off or using Blokada (but I really want to use AG) I experience none of these problems.
In the P3XL settings I already tried changing the 'Private VPN' settings to no avail.
My first question is, if anybody else is experiencing this. Or not.
And my second question is naturally, if someone has a solution or an idea of what could be going on.

Who is your provider? AdGuard has problems with T-Mobile and sounds like this is the case. I bet when on wifi you don't see this issue. I have not come across any solutions, probably best to email customer support since you have a lifetime license.

Thank you for your reply.
Im on Vodafone in the Netherlands.
The issue appears both on WIFI and Mobile Data.
I have posted my issues on the Adguard forums and finally someone is willing to help (if he can).
But I thought I would ask here too.
Maybe there are other users who also Adguard on this device. And may or may not have the same issue.
Just trying to get as much info at this point

I don't have an answer for you, but just chiming in that I use AdGuard also. No issues here. I'm running it pretty much stock (just install it, and go) with maybe the added filters for security, but I haven't changed any settings or change the VPN type. Have you modified settings, or are using it as is?

@Myrrhman Can you please link to your thread?

I have enabled some extra filters.
I have also enabled DNS in the settings. Using Adguards DNS and in that setting using DNS over TLS.

So whats it called ? Jinxed ? Or reversed jinxed ? ...
Ever since I posted here and in the Adguard forums, things are a bit better than a month ago. (But still not the way I was used to on my P2XL)
Also, connection seem a bit faster when on mobile data and not WIFI.
I'll admit, I am a bit confused now as to what is going on.
All I know is my device got one (Android security) update in the past month. But I am not too sue this made changes to my issues.
A little timeline:
1st of April I received my P3XL. One of the first things I always install is Adguard.
Internet got choked horribly (using the settings I always use). After a few days of tweaking and testing, I decided to switch to Blokada. All issues disappeared.
Around the 14th of April, i tried again. Internet got choked horribly again. But .. I disabled a system app named DNS in app settings (Adguard). This seemed to make things a lot better ... for a while
Soon all was back to truly unworkable. Back to Blokada. All issues disappeared.
2 days ago, re-installed Adguard. I want it to work !! I WANT to go back to how it was on P2XL. So also started a thread here (thinking it might be between the P3XL and Adguard) and continued also on the Adguard forums.
And now we are here, today.
With things finally looking up. But i have truly no idea why.
Anyways, I will keep on testing and probably also keep posting here. Because its still not all how it's supposed to be. I am just unsure on how to proceed from here.
And yes, I highly prefer Adguard's interface and features over Blokada. And also because I purchased a lifetime license in February of 2017.
(Phew, I'm usually not good at these write ups, but there you go )

Just a shot in the dark, but do you have data saver turned on?

Thank you guys !
This is really helpful. It shows its at least not a problem with Adguard in combination with our beautiful P3XL

Okay. Seems the issue is more present when on WIFI.
On mobile data, things are pretty fast.

I wish I had a better solution, but I had the same problems with adguard. I did the back and forth between adguard and blockada, but both had similar issues.
My best solution has been to set up Pi Hole on a Raspberry Pi 3+, but you could probably just use the Pi Zero (super cheap, but still not free).
The advantages are strong. The Pi does the heavy lifting, so there is no extreme strain on the battery. Pi Hole has great support through an amazing community--so you can get pretty surgical in your blocking. You can set up a VPN, so the Pi is handling DNS, even while you are off your home network.
I haven't given up on adguard or blockada, I think they are both decent products, but they aren't as effective as Pi Hole in my experience.

Thank you for your reply. I will keep it in mind.
I just cant let go of Adguard for some reason.
Right now the issues only occur when connected to Wifi. So I'm thinking its a setting in my router. i just have no clue what it could be.
I have changed the DNS several times, but always after a day or two, everything chokes up again. Well, i say everything, but its most notable in Chrome (Dev) and the Google app.
Whenever I use Blokada i have literally zero issues. And also when I'm on Adguard and using mobile data.
I am situated in the Netherlands. And a test someone over at the Adguard forums gave me, shows me when I'm on Wifi Adguard connects to London server. And when I'm on mobile data, Adguard connects to a Amsterdam server. Although that shouldn't matter much, they said.
Sigh. I just wish it would work like it did on my P2XL. Never had issues then. With the same router and settings.

Make sure your router isn't blocking UDP 443. Google uses that for their QUIC protocol. It will fail back to standard 443 but it will really slow you down waiting for the failover.

Using adguard forever as well. Lifetime license. Currently using it on my pixel 3xl and I have a bunch of settings and filters applied, not having any issues with speed on data or wifi.
Also on Android Q beta 4.

Thanks for your input !
So its more and more likely its either my router (Nighthawk R7000) or my provider (Ziggo)
Still doesn't explain why my P2XL never had problems.

You're welcome
I don't know what the cause is for you. I guess I'm just basically trying to let you know it could be something else that's the issue. Just cuz it's fine for me and I have it heavily configured.

I mean, theoretically, using Adguard SHOULD increase load times, however, not to the severity that you're describing - and not in such inconsistent quantities and intervals...
I'm wondering how Adguard distributes their server load as I imagine they have to be relatively spaced apart so that users further away don't experience extra latency routing through a server that's halfway around the planet...
But hey, that could be a potential cause - perhaps they shut down the server hosted in your region and so your load times are horrible now. This could at least explain why you didn't experience as much latency on your P2XL....

I had this issue before.
Turn off DNS filtering. I'm based in the UK and also disabled ipv6 as adguard won't work on 4g only WiFi

T-Mobile Tethering Prevision for unlimited tether

I've searched the Q&A for threads but don't see an answer. Is there a ROM that allows unlimited wifi tether/hotspot on TMO?
I used to use the Wifi Tether app but that joint been messing up
Any cm rom as far as i know.
u should be able to on stock, i am able to with AT&T
As far as I can tell you don't even need to be rooted or modded to get this to work. Seems to work for me using an adb shell and typing:
PHP:
settings put global tether_dun_required 0

Since getting my OP3, no matter what tethering app came with the rom, TMO always knew I was tethering, even with the usual tweaks like provisioning set to 0, etc. So I retried the Wifi Tether Router app, and it was a pain to set up. I ended up emailing the developer, and he got back to me within a few hours with some things to try and now it works well. So far TMO isn't seeing the tethering, but of course it's showing up as data. And I'm not using a VPN or a user agent changer, just straight up Wifi Tether Router. There is always going to be a little data that will show up as tethering in my experience with pretty much every hotspot tweak, and it's the same here. But it's a small amount that's never over 1gb in a month in my experience.
Here are my settings for the app that work flawlessly on Sultan's CM13 rom and even allow me to play xbox live with no lag if my signal's good: **NOTE: Haven't tried this on any other rom, so can't help you if it's not an OP3 running Sultan's CM 13**
Encryption type: wpa2-psk
Wifi Channel: 1
Interface: Auto (after using app, it sets itself to wlan0 - but selecting auto got it working)
Method: Auto (same thing as interface - will set itself to 2-Android Version 4.2 or higher - at least on my rom)
No Firmware Reload: Unchecked (important one!)
Prevents Standby: Checked
MTU Adjust: Checked
TTL Increment: Checked
Wifi Scanning AutoDisabler: Checked
Remove Background Image: Checked (not important - personal preference)
If it's not written above, it's either something you need to fill in yourself like SSID or password or it's standard and wasn't changed by me --> the default settings of the installed app. I'm attaching screen shots of checked/unchecked boxes as a reference. And definitely contact the developer if you need help, the guy is very helpful and knows what he's doing. Good luck, hope it works for you.

You are my hero. My lte kept dropping my hotspot
That's awesome, I'm glad to hear it! This little app was the best $2 or whatever it was I spent. It just consistently works. I also found another one awhile ago that is outstanding in its own right. It's called EasyTether Pro. Again, the paid version, but it's a simple decision on whether hassle free tethering is worth a tiny investment. EasyTether Pro is not wireless, but it's also truly undetectable I've found across every rom I've used it. And since it's primarily a USB tethering based app (although it offers bluetooth as well), it's blazing fast. It's a good one to throw in the mix or have as a backup I no longer use the hotspots that are baked into the roms unless I know the dev has modded it themself. Because as long as making money off of tethering data is worthwhile for these companies, it's going to be a constant cat and mouse game. Ain't nobody got time for that! These third party apps take very different approaches that are consistently effective.
And to anyone reading, I'm not a shill for either of these apps. I could care less if you buy them. I'm just passing along useful info that was passed on to me or I discovered myself. Happy tethering!

you can simply use an app to change the ttl, that's how they see if the phone is tethering or not

VPN help

Hi all, I need some help with my VPN. I have TMobile and when I connect to VPN I can't load any pages. It works on all of my other devices except my OG pixel, and now my pixel 2 XL. It's only when I'm on my mobile network if I'm connected to WiFi everything works fine. I have searched and can't find anything.
It's kind of weird that this is only happening on my pixel devices?

I have a paid VPN on my Nexus 5X, running Android 8.0. It is set to autoconnect and it disconnects when I go on the cell network. Seems to stay connected on wifi 90%+ of the time without intervening. I've never messed with it when it disconnects when the cell network. But I just tried and the VPN turned on and websites didn't load. So it seems to be acting the same way. I'm on Fi, but connected through the Tmobile network. I also have Fi's Wi-Fi Assistant on, but I've never seen it connect to any wifi hostpot so I don't think it is coming into play. I also tried Opera VPN on the cell network and websites were also blocked using that.
I wonder if it is something to do with stock Google Android. I personally think Google messes around too much with things that are working fine.
So I guess all I've added is I am having the same thing happen on my stock Google Nexus 5X when using cell data.

What paid VPN do you use? After googling for hours I found some info but nothing that fixed my issue.
I host my own VPN on my unifi security gateway and and kept seeing that the default MTU and MMS is set to 1452 on the the unifi security gateway and needs to be set to 1500... Some people had this work for them, others not.
This sucks I was excited about this phone coming from my OG pixel XL mainly for this reason. I thought my old pixel was just messed up.

I use VPN Unlimited. It is on the cheap end of the scale, so may not be the most reliable or up to date app. Works for wifi connections though. I'm also not trying to access a protected network. Just getting around geographic restrictions when I travel and for when I use public wifi.

By no means a VPN power user, but I was trying to use the built-in VPN on my asus AC-68U. I have always used the PPTP and it worked flawlessly on my 6P over Sprint. Switched to the Pixel 2 XL and nadda. I tried to research as well to no avail. I simply switched to OpenVPN on the router and downloaded the app (Play Store: OpenVPN for Android). It has been working perfectly ever since. Even has a quick toggle button you can add. Just my $0.02.

Awesome thank you for the heads up. I was trying not to setup an openvpn server since my security gateway had an L2TP VPN server built in. But it looks like I'll be setting up a VM openVPN server tonight. Thank you wish me luck!
I will report back to let you guys know of that works or not. Still sucks that every device I have connected to my VPN worked except the one I use most! Pixel 2 FtW
OpenVPN server worked perfectly! Kinda sucks cause it's not tied into my Ubiquiti GUI but it works perfectly! So I'm happy thanks all.
I use Private Internet Access. It is a paid sub ($50+ on slickdeals for 2 years) they have an app and quick toggle as well. Works on all my Android devices and PC so far. Pretty happy with them. Claims of no logging either if that is something of importance to you.

Yeah I have a PIA account also from SD but I dont use it anymore. The main reason for the VPN for me was to access my home network from outside safely. But since I have my own VPN server setup now no need to go bacck and forth to PIA and openVPN.
I am going to be putting my openVPN to the test today and see if I can hold a connection all day long. So far im 3 hours in no drops or disconnects yet... Im loving it.

Right, nlua, I am also using PIA which is very cheap VPN on the list of best VPNs services. My biggest reason to use PIA is that torrent-friendly VPN with no logs and Unlimited bandwidth and VPN speed.

Carrier has detected rooted hotspot tethering on Pixel 2 XL

I have a Magisk rooted Pixel 2 XL running Android Pie and had no problem editing the buildprop (net.tethering.noprovisioning=true) and adb settings (tether_dun_required 0) to enable the native hotspot and bypass the carrier tether check. Or so I thought...
Yesterday I received a dreaded text message from my carrier (Cricket): "our records indicate you have used your Cricket phone as a 'mobile hotspot' without the Cricket Mobile hotspot feature..." threatening to throttle me due to terms of use violation.
Am I mistaken that the tether_dun_required 0 adb setting disallows the carrier from being able to differentiate between tethered data usage and normal data usage by the device itself? Could this be something that is no longer working as expected in Pie? (I had tethered with this method for a while on Oreo and hadn't received a warning from Cricket until upgrading to Pie.
Could be coincidental...)
Any insight is appreciated, thank you.

Before I joined ProjectFi when I received these I told them to pound sand.
Every conversation I had with them was based on amount of usage, but they could never tell how the data was being consumed.
I wouldnt worry until I was given something in writing, hell even an email.
The carriers have multiple methods of detecting tethering, and there is no way to effectively hide your activity. Where you were caught tethering, I would take the threat seriously. For more details, read this: How can phone companies detect tethering, including a WiFi hotspot?

I was thinking it may be a bluff based on spiked usage. I haven't nearly hit Cricket's stated throttle point of 22GB, but I would say my typical usage over the last year was maybe 4GB/mo where as this month I'm over 15GB. However, before my Pixel 2 XL I have used FoxFi on an S4 for years without a single peep from Cricket, so the instant warning after using my new Pixel 2 XL gives me pause. I definitely don't want to go back to my antique S4 but I can't be without hotspot capability. Thanks for the reply.

I'll be in a similar situation ( BTW, would you share a guide on how to edit the build.prop mate? I can't find any),
the difference is that I'd lose my GUDP, that's a NO NO. I don't know if I'm destined to keep using my Note 4 and FoxFi...
Any help is greatly appreciated guys.

If you're rooted, install BuildProp Editor and follow these instructions to unblock your native hotspot.
If you aren't yet rooted, this is the best guide I have found.
ON A SIDE NOTE, regarding my original post, I have decided to push on with tethering in spite of the warning text from Cricket. Long story short, this is my 3rd Pixel 2 XL (been searching for "the right one") and in the process of rooting my latest one, I recalled that when restoring the first one back to the stock image to return the device, I had a TYPO in my adb settings to set the DUN requirement to 0. So I am thinking that any tethering I did ON THAT FIRST DEVICE was detectable, and it may have taken Cricket some time to get around to warning me about it. Now, all settings being verified on my keeper 2 XL, I am going to "keep calm and tether on" to see if I am in the clear.
I have also applied TTL 64 using TTL Editor as an additional protection measure. Tough to say whether it's truly effective, but it's an added measure none the less.

You know what, I was thinking... Maybe using a VPN could help? This might be a good chance to find out. Do you have a VPN account? BTW, thanks for the help. I'll go try it today. I've been looking for this for weeks.

I've had cricket for about 4 years, always use the buildprop trick for hotspots, bluetooth tethering, and usb tethering and have never received a message like this. That being said, I have the 2.5gb plan so I throttle much sooner than you. If they aren't bluffing, its likely I haven't received a warning just because I have so little LTE data.

I am considering using a VPN. Have you done this with success? I have no experience with VPNs but I am thinking they are becoming more of a good idea...

I'd like to try it as soon as I can enable tethering. I hope I'm not too dumb not to understand the steps.

If you're rooted with magisk, there's a module for tethering.

Are you using magisk? If so, go into the downloads and search tethering. It'll pop up.

Which one?
The one I'm using is called tethering enabler, by stangri.
vpn should work, but it is tricky to get the vpn to pass through to the wifi hotspot.
there is a seperate app to get it to work. its possible they could notice the vpn usage (unless you try obfuscated servers) but i dont know how hardcore they are going to be about this

VPN automatically counts as tethering even if your not tethering and gets throttled.
---------- Post added at 02:30 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:26 AM ----------
I've been looking through every forum and cannot find a viable solution. TTL editor doesn't seem to make a difference. Changing build prop doesn't work. WiFi tether router is a bust. And when I even turn on my VPN before I even try to tether I am throttled.
That being said, I have made progress. In no pro but I understand a little... I have just stated tinkering with "netguard" and tweeking settings then turned on "VPN Hotspot" S it's seems like in getting throttled less than normal. I'm still not happy but it's an improvement.
Anybody found a solution for that? :-(

How to block ads reliably? No root

Hi, got a s9 plus the other day and don't want to root it, so no Adaway for me. On my s8 I used dns66 and was fine with it, but as it seems all DNS based blockers bug out on the s9 as in they randomly kill data connections completely when switching between wifi and mobile data. Tried blokada, same thing.
I'm not super fine with Adhell / sabs either since it requires me to resign the packs, install everything new and get new knox keys every three months.
It's not a lot of work, but annoying still.
Is there any fix to the DNS blocking not working? Any other way to block? Or should I go to Adhell 3?

Please read my post.
What issues are you having with Blockada? You still see ads in Chrome only? Because you need to go to Chrome://flags, search "dns" and disable all the options found.
I don't have issues with this + Blockada + adguard dns servers.
I have exactly these issues as reported here.
https://github.com/julian-klode/dns66/issues/258
It's for dns66, but applies to any DNS based blocker. It's the same with blockada, I tried it. Samsung based software problem
I am using block this! , works ok.

This is probably the last blocker I'd use if I had a choice between blockada, dns66 and block this, since it has absolutely no options to configure it whatsoever or add hosts files, but indeed - this one seems to work where dns66 and blockada don't. I switched a bit between wifi and mobile and the connection didn't crash.
Using it in combination with Adhell 3 at the moment, since I set that up anyway today. But will try if block this works okay on its own once my Knox license runs out and I'd have to set up Adhell again.
Disconnect Pro seems to be working great so far.
Edit,
Nah block this only worked for a few hours. Same problem afterwards. All VPN based blockers do this. The vpn66 issue on github suggests this is s9 plus only. Maybe I should check the s9 plus subforum

I used to use Block This but it hasn't been updated in over a year. I started using Blokada and at first it seemed like it blocked too much but once I got the blacklist and whitelists figured out it has worked great. Plus when it was updated to 3 and then subsequent updates fixed the issues.

Better to do like this. Block this is working ok for days in the row.
For the other question, what to update, the blocking it's DNS based, not application. Only when the DNS server (actually lists) will not be updated anymore, then there will be problems.
But I am still searching for other solutions, as privacy issues can appear, not sure if it's the case for block this.
To be clear, the VPN blocking worked perfectly fine on my Galaxy S8. This seems to be a specific issue with the S9, maybe only plus, caused by the phone's firmware.
I found my mistake with Adhell (forgot to block port 53 for Chrome) and now everything is blocked fine. And no annoying VPN notification in the status bar all the time. Only issue is I'll have to update it every three months, but ok.
I'm using AdGuard and pretty happy with it: no ads seen at all.

I've been using Adguard too and it works incredibly well for blocking ads in nearly every app. The only concern I have with AdGuard is battery drain, however, I'm uncertain if that's related to AdGuard or a Samsung issue. I haven't had time to investigate it thoroughly yet.

AFWall+ blocks internet on Work Wi-Fi

Hey guys! Right now I am running a Havoc OS and I have AFWall+ as the firewall. It runs flawlessly on mobile data and my home wifi but as soon as I connect to the wifi at work it stops working properly. The wifi at work requires me to login to the network after connecting to it but for some reason, AFWall+ blocks the login pop-up. I've tried turning off the firewall, logging in, and then turning it back on but AFWall+ ends up blocking the internet as well.
The logs show that the (root) app is being denied access but it is whitelisted. I've also tried checking off the wifi whitelist for every program in the list but the wifi is still blocked. I've enabled the (kernel), (ntp), (shell), (tethering), and (vpn) as well. The only option that lets me get the login pop-up and internet access is the (Any app) program. Obviously I don't want to leave that ticked off the whole time. Anybody have any ideas as to what the issue could be?
the whitelisting feature has issues atm on Pie....go look at the AF thread or github....
So far for me the only way it works properly is to invert and the block as in blacklist, not whitelist....YMMV
Ive been assisting in the troubleshooting....last I saw was a Beta2 of v3 out...

Unfortunately your solution doesnt work for me either, I still have to uncheck the blacklist for the (Any apps) program. I suppose I'll have to just wait until the issues get fixed and pass/block (Any apps) as necessary for work. Thank you for the response.

I've been having issues with AFWall+ (Donate) ever since upgrading to Android 9.0 almost two months ago. Dev support has been lacking to say the least, so I've been looking for an alternative. Apparently Avast bought out Droidwall some time ago. I've been running Avast Internet Security for about three weeks now and disabled all the components (along with any the 3rd party analytics) and it works great with no battery drain strictly as a firewall(which requires root as well). And since it's part of Avast IS, future updates/bug fixes shouldn't be a problem.

I haven't had a chance to use the Avast app yet but I am pleased to say that I updated AFWall+ to 3.0.0 and the issues I've had before have been fixed. Thank you for the reply.
