Hi all, I need some help with my VPN. I have TMobile and when I connect to VPN I can't load any pages. It works on all of my other devices except my OG pixel, and now my pixel 2 XL. It's only when I'm on my mobile network if I'm connected to WiFi everything works fine. I have searched and can't find anything.
It's kind of weird that this is only happening on my pixel devices?

I use ipvanish never had a problem. Now using adguard and no problems with it either. So maybe it's your VPN provider

I have a paid VPN on my Nexus 5X, running Android 8.0. It is set to autoconnect and it disconnects when I go on the cell network. Seems to stay connected on wifi 90%+ of the time without intervening. I've never messed with it when it disconnects when the cell network. But I just tried and the VPN turned on and websites didn't load. So it seems to be acting the same way. I'm on Fi, but connected through the Tmobile network. I also have Fi's Wi-Fi Assistant on, but I've never seen it connect to any wifi hostpot so I don't think it is coming into play. I also tried Opera VPN on the cell network and websites were also blocked using that.
I wonder if it is something to do with stock Google Android. I personally think Google messes around too much with things that are working fine.
So I guess all I've added is I am having the same thing happen on my stock Google Nexus 5X when using cell data.

What paid VPN do you use? After googling for hours I found some info but nothing that fixed my issue.
I host my own VPN on my unifi security gateway and and kept seeing that the default MTU and MMS is set to 1452 on the the unifi security gateway and needs to be set to 1500... Some people had this work for them, others not.
This sucks I was excited about this phone coming from my OG pixel XL mainly for this reason. I thought my old pixel was just messed up.

I use VPN Unlimited. It is on the cheap end of the scale, so may not be the most reliable or up to date app. Works for wifi connections though. I'm also not trying to access a protected network. Just getting around geographic restrictions when I travel and for when I use public wifi.

By no means a VPN power user, but I was trying to use the built-in VPN on my asus AC-68U. I have always used the PPTP and it worked flawlessly on my 6P over Sprint. Switched to the Pixel 2 XL and nadda. I tried to research as well to no avail. I simply switched to OpenVPN on the router and downloaded the app (Play Store: OpenVPN for Android). It has been working perfectly ever since. Even has a quick toggle button you can add. Just my $0.02.

Awesome thank you for the heads up. I was trying not to setup an openvpn server since my security gateway had an L2TP VPN server built in. But it looks like I'll be setting up a VM openVPN server tonight. Thank you wish me luck!
I will report back to let you guys know of that works or not. Still sucks that every device I have connected to my VPN worked except the one I use most! Pixel 2 FtW
OpenVPN server worked perfectly! Kinda sucks cause it's not tied into my Ubiquiti GUI but it works perfectly! So I'm happy thanks all.
I use Private Internet Access. It is a paid sub ($50+ on slickdeals for 2 years) they have an app and quick toggle as well. Works on all my Android devices and PC so far. Pretty happy with them. Claims of no logging either if that is something of importance to you.

Yeah I have a PIA account also from SD but I dont use it anymore. The main reason for the VPN for me was to access my home network from outside safely. But since I have my own VPN server setup now no need to go bacck and forth to PIA and openVPN.
I am going to be putting my openVPN to the test today and see if I can hold a connection all day long. So far im 3 hours in no drops or disconnects yet... Im loving it.

Right, nlua, I am also using PIA which is very cheap VPN on the list of best VPNs services. My biggest reason to use PIA is that torrent-friendly VPN with no logs and Unlimited bandwidth and VPN speed.

I have spent over a year trying to resolve the tethering issue with T-Mobile and their upsell page that appears after you have maxed your hotspot data limit. It seems that some people can get around it using 'user agent spoofing' while others don't need to. I thought I would share my latest findings on this topic. I have successfully enabled Wi-Fi Tethering without needing to use user agent spoofing when using Windows browsers. This was achieved hours after T-Mobile sent me a text saying my hotspot data limit had been reached. First, a rundown of my Note 3:
T-Mobile Note 3
TWRP 2.8.0.0 Recovery
HyperDrive ROM Release 5
Compulsion Kernel 16
Wifi Tether v3.4 experimental ( http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...e=wifi_tether_v3_4-experimental1.apk&can=2&q= )
There are some screenshots below showing my settings:
MSS Clamping (MSS Clamping only appears in the options when using a kernel that supports it).
Routing Fix should be also checked.
Update: Just updated my Hyperdrive ROM to ver. 5 and I had to switch the device profile to Galaxy S3 to get it to work. Not sure why but using the device profile for the Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE) stopped working.
UPDATE 2: I also failed to mention that, for me at least, I have to start tethering twice before it shows up as a wireless connection. Not sure why but it just can't be seen the first time you launch it after a fresh boot ...for me anyway. So, if it doesn't work the first time just stop it and fire it up again. Should be golden from then on!
UPDATE 3: Another update? So soon? Well, yes because I seem to keep forgetting to mention important details. A.D.D. at work! Heh! Ok, first off I highly recommend using Googles DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) as you will most likely have problems if you don't. Place them in the ip4 properties of your PC's wireless adapter.
It's important to note that sometimes you will not acquire DNS when connecting to your hotspot. This is fixed by simply selecting the 'T-Mobile Tethering' APN prior to activating Wi-Fi tethering.
I haven't changed anything else from within Android or with any other apps.
Please post your results because defeating the upsell page has been an ongoing problem for me and many others and this has resolved it for me. I have full tethering access on my PC at LTE speeds as though it was a dedicated internet connection.
NO MORE USER AGENT SWITCHING!
Please hit the thank you button if this has helped you. Best of luck!

Defeating the upsell page is easy
First of all if you can enable the hotspot on your device you can use any mobile device without seeing the upsell page as the system relies on USER AGENT STRINGS to identiry your device. So on windows or mac firefox or chrome install a user agent switcher. Then use it to choose say chrome for android. Simply refresh the page and you are up and running. Some pages will not always display right as you will get the mobile version. You can also run programs such as utorrent and teamviewer without modifications through the hotspot. Any questions just ask..

This works without needing User Agent mods and doesn't trigger the upsell page even after your Hotspot limit has been exceeded.
Nice! !!
Awesome!!! Works like you said. Thx. ...
Thank you so much, this worked great..I use to always have a problem connecting my ps3 to my phone, would get the upsell page immediately, but now it seems to be working fine, I can go online with my ps3 using your settings. Been looking for a long time for a way to do this. Once again thank you. I did not see the option to check MSS clamping, but it seems to work fine.
Can't get this to work on Tweaked 3.9 for the Note 3. Not that it's needed, since native tethering works without any tethering data usage ever being detected. But I've always liked this app and native tethering takes several minutes for data to flow properly.

Did you try it with the Compulsion 16 kernel? I couldn't get it to work originally until I installed it. Not 100% sure that it matters yet as I haven't done any more testing without it or with other kernels. I don't want to mess with it too much as it's my main phone for home/work and home internet.

I have the new hyper drive as well. I have been battling a issue for a few days now and I am so happy I found this. Heres my issue, I use my hot spot as well as teathering every day. But I also tend to flash back and forth between ROMs as well, so its impossible for me to pin point how much hot spot data I used. Any way, it worked fine but now this happens....
first it will connect to my laptop, the phone shows its connected my laptop says connected as well yet it is limited access on the laptop with out internet access. When I switch it off to try again the hot spot on the phone will not even connect. It just fails over and over and over. After a reboot it starts the proccess over again. I am running the hyper drive ROM on my n900t
Is this better than wifi tether router? Because it works really good and i dont even have to setup anything I just turn it on and thats it!!

TL;DR
backup is set on my nexus 6 and I synced right before turning on my pixel Xl for the first time but saved wifi passwords didnt transfer
Hey fellas.
Is there a way to transfer my saved wifi passwords and SSID's from my old phone to my pixel? I was under the impression google did this via the backup feature. I know it restores it on the same phone because ive wiped my N6 before and it remembered everything once I signed in again. Im open to using a 3rd party app but I hoping I dont need to root my pixel as I use android pay......yeah Im that guy lol. Thanks in advance!
I used the cable transfer feature to copy my stuff from my N6 to my Pixel XL. Not sure if that made any difference but all my WiFi info was restored.

hmm that could be it as I opted out of doing that. Is there a way to initiate that again without doing a factory reset on my pixel though?
It should sync with your Google account - I can not confirm or deny it because I entered my WiFi password before syncing and haven't had a chance to go to another WiFi location I use yet.
I know for a fact on other phones in the past, the WiFi passwords synced through my Google account though.

Only way I know of would be a factory reset. I used the cable as well from my N6 and was definitely the way to go. Fast and all my settings, text, apps, etc moved over.

ok. thanks for your insight. In any case I at least confirmed it was possible somewhat here. Chatting with support via the settings tab and support said I couldnt do it at all lol. they are nice but kinda useless
its been hit and miss with the backup for me. Usually works, but sometimes just doesn't.
I went from Nexus 6 to Pixel XL, and used the NFC to set up the Pixel XL (copying apps and settings from the Nexus 6). it copied across all my app settings (for google signed in apps), as well as wifi passwords.
Whenever I go to a public place that has free wifi, I can connect but no internet on my Pixel XL. I also had this problem on my Nexus 6P but never looked into it. It works perfectly fine at home or when I visit a relative who has password protected wifi.
Anyone know why?
Im thinking it could have something to do with my add blocking apps... AdAway and Adguard.
Anyone know?
Thanks

Mine does this too and it sucks. Many times I can select forget network and then re add it and it will work, but some times it wont after multiple tries doing this. Its only on open networks where you use no password as I never have any issues with wifi where I have to enter a password. Mine has done this from day 1 even after all updates it still does this and I have the verizon 32 gig pixel xl. I use to have problems at walmart kroger and meijer now it mainly seems to be kroger but every time my pixel xl wont work on their wifi my unlocked Htc 10 will work perfectly off it so its the phone for sure. Sure would be nice if they would fix this issue. I think the problem is in the wifi assistant.
I do also have adaway though but I highly doubt that is the problem as I have had this issue from day 1 way before I ever added adaway.
Okay I am having a strange problem and I have run out of ideas (and so has Google). On my new Pixel 3 XL, it is up and running smoothly with one giant issue. Most non-stock apps (Netflix, all amazon apps, Zedge, etc) cannot connect to the internet when using WiFi. All the stock(youYube, google play store, gmail, etc) apps that I have tested can connect over WiFi. All of the non-stock apps CAN connect over the cell networks (Project Fi). ALL other devices I have, including the Pixel 2, work 100% fine over WiFi and cell network.
All routers, phones, apps are up to date.
I have tried everything that both I and google can think of. My ISP is Frontier Bonded DSL modem (I have no choice where I live but get okay speeds 22Mbps).
1) Factory reset everything (router, phone, even my modem)
2) Use the router and WiFi built into supplied DSL modem (modem is only 5 months old), same issue
3) New TP-Link router, same issue
4) Used an older Netgear router, same issue
5) Reconfigured routers as WAP, same issue
6) Reset, re-entered everything on phone, forgot networks, uninstalled, re-installed all involved apps, cleared caches, etc, etc.
7) Tried different forms of encryption, AES, TKIP, same issue
8) Changed from WPA to WPA2 to none, same issue
9) Tried different DNS servers, same issue
I was on the phone with Google for 4+ hours to no avail. Again every single other device I have, other phones, streaming devices, Amazon fire, etc, etc all work 100% Only the Pixel 3 has issues. Any hints, tips, or tricks appreciated.
Same here!
I'm having the same issue. CenturyLink is my Internet provider (VDSL2 connection), and Project Fi is my cellular network. I made a post on Reddit regarding this and found a small amount of other people experiencing the same thing. Since I'm a new user I can't post the link to that discussion, but if you search my username /u/ilikepizzaskolvikes you should be able to find that discussion. So far it seems to be affecting Frontier and CenturyLink customers. Connections made from a house using Comcast worked as expected...
I've tried everything you've tried. I did get it to work by changing my modem (Netgear D6400) from bridge/modem-only mode to modem/router mode. When connected to the modem's WiFi both my phone and my wife's Pixel 3 apps started working correctly.
Unfortunately, that isn't a good solution for me since I work from home and for whatever reason my Netgear D6400 doesn't handle my work VPN traffic unless it is in modem-only mode.... So I'm back to square one here...
I have the same issue with Office 365 work emails and Netflix. It works just fine over LTE and using my work Wifi but it will not connect using my home wifi. I have a Netgear R9000 and Netgear Orbi. I have spectrum Internet.
I'm having same issue several apps including Zedge won't work in WiFi other being my credit card app
Any solutions? Same problem.
Are any of you using an ad blocker? Try whitelisting those apps if you are.
I had a mystery problem with wi-f and no connectioni, and it turned out to be "Hidden SSID" and how android 9 handles it differently than android 8 !
hint - you have to scroll down...
( hope this helps )

Questions: Did you try booting the phone in safe mode? Didn't see that in your list. Also, are you on the Nov update?
Sure hope you get this figured out, and report back if you do. I have no issues with my Pixel 3 and home wifi, but I travel a lot and use many different wifi networks, so could easily be vulnerable. Thanks in advance for any insight.

So you think it's a HW problem with just some Pixel 3s? Wonder if there's some connection between this and reports of some VPN's constantly disconnecting. My VPN works fine as well. One other thing I saw is when I connected to my Spectrum streaming app to watch TV I got a message that I had to turn off USB debugging. I normally leave it turned on, and it hasn't caused problems with any of the other apps I listed, but perhaps that's a setting difference. Just some random thoughts.

Ok, that makes sense. Hope there's a fix soon.
I had the same problem, and tried everything as you did. Last thing I did was to replace my routers firmware to WRT, It stopped.
I have an Asus AC3200 original, and updated it to Asuswrt Merlin.
But as you said you tried different routers, don't know what to suggest...
I've tried safe mode, etc. as well as current updates but still no joy. I've been going back and forth with Google support for a couple of weeks. They are sending me a new phone but like @DrUnkeN_TiGeR I think this is software, not hardware so I'm assuming this won't fix the issue.
I just came across this today. So I'm going to play around with MTU settings tonight and see if it makes any difference.
My bonded dsl modem from Frontier won't do bridge mode apparently, so when the new phone doesn't change anything my plan is to see about getting a modem that will do bridge mode so I can put a different FW behind it.

Been using the Adguard app for a long long time and have a lifetime license. Used it on all my last devices, including the Pixel 2 XL.
I have never had a single problem. It always worked wonders.
Until now, on my P3XL it totally chokes my internet. Making loading times / refresh times literally minutes.
It makes Chrome (Beta) / Instagram / Twitter / or any other app that needs the net virtually unusable.
I am dumbstruck by this. I cannot figure out why this happens.
With Adguard off or using Blokada (but I really want to use AG) I experience none of these problems.
In the P3XL settings I already tried changing the 'Private VPN' settings to no avail.
My first question is, if anybody else is experiencing this. Or not.
And my second question is naturally, if someone has a solution or an idea of what could be going on.
Who is your provider? AdGuard has problems with T-Mobile and sounds like this is the case. I bet when on wifi you don't see this issue. I have not come across any solutions, probably best to email customer support since you have a lifetime license.

Thank you for your reply.
Im on Vodafone in the Netherlands.
The issue appears both on WIFI and Mobile Data.
I have posted my issues on the Adguard forums and finally someone is willing to help (if he can).
But I thought I would ask here too.
Maybe there are other users who also Adguard on this device. And may or may not have the same issue.
Just trying to get as much info at this point
I don't have an answer for you, but just chiming in that I use AdGuard also. No issues here. I'm running it pretty much stock (just install it, and go) with maybe the added filters for security, but I haven't changed any settings or change the VPN type. Have you modified settings, or are using it as is?
@Myrrhman Can you please link to your thread?

I have enabled some extra filters.
I have also enabled DNS in the settings. Using Adguards DNS and in that setting using DNS over TLS.

So whats it called ? Jinxed ? Or reversed jinxed ? ...
Ever since I posted here and in the Adguard forums, things are a bit better than a month ago. (But still not the way I was used to on my P2XL)
Also, connection seem a bit faster when on mobile data and not WIFI.
I'll admit, I am a bit confused now as to what is going on.
All I know is my device got one (Android security) update in the past month. But I am not too sue this made changes to my issues.
A little timeline:
1st of April I received my P3XL. One of the first things I always install is Adguard.
Internet got choked horribly (using the settings I always use). After a few days of tweaking and testing, I decided to switch to Blokada. All issues disappeared.
Around the 14th of April, i tried again. Internet got choked horribly again. But .. I disabled a system app named DNS in app settings (Adguard). This seemed to make things a lot better ... for a while
Soon all was back to truly unworkable. Back to Blokada. All issues disappeared.
2 days ago, re-installed Adguard. I want it to work !! I WANT to go back to how it was on P2XL. So also started a thread here (thinking it might be between the P3XL and Adguard) and continued also on the Adguard forums.
And now we are here, today.
With things finally looking up. But i have truly no idea why.
Anyways, I will keep on testing and probably also keep posting here. Because its still not all how it's supposed to be. I am just unsure on how to proceed from here.
And yes, I highly prefer Adguard's interface and features over Blokada. And also because I purchased a lifetime license in February of 2017.
(Phew, I'm usually not good at these write ups, but there you go )
Just a shot in the dark, but do you have data saver turned on?

Thank you guys !
This is really helpful. It shows its at least not a problem with Adguard in combination with our beautiful P3XL
Okay. Seems the issue is more present when on WIFI.
On mobile data, things are pretty fast.
I wish I had a better solution, but I had the same problems with adguard. I did the back and forth between adguard and blockada, but both had similar issues.
My best solution has been to set up Pi Hole on a Raspberry Pi 3+, but you could probably just use the Pi Zero (super cheap, but still not free).
The advantages are strong. The Pi does the heavy lifting, so there is no extreme strain on the battery. Pi Hole has great support through an amazing community--so you can get pretty surgical in your blocking. You can set up a VPN, so the Pi is handling DNS, even while you are off your home network.
I haven't given up on adguard or blockada, I think they are both decent products, but they aren't as effective as Pi Hole in my experience.

Thank you for your reply. I will keep it in mind.
I just cant let go of Adguard for some reason.
Right now the issues only occur when connected to Wifi. So I'm thinking its a setting in my router. i just have no clue what it could be.
I have changed the DNS several times, but always after a day or two, everything chokes up again. Well, i say everything, but its most notable in Chrome (Dev) and the Google app.
Whenever I use Blokada i have literally zero issues. And also when I'm on Adguard and using mobile data.
I am situated in the Netherlands. And a test someone over at the Adguard forums gave me, shows me when I'm on Wifi Adguard connects to London server. And when I'm on mobile data, Adguard connects to a Amsterdam server. Although that shouldn't matter much, they said.
Sigh. I just wish it would work like it did on my P2XL. Never had issues then. With the same router and settings.

Make sure your router isn't blocking UDP 443. Google uses that for their QUIC protocol. It will fail back to standard 443 but it will really slow you down waiting for the failover.

Using adguard forever as well. Lifetime license. Currently using it on my pixel 3xl and I have a bunch of settings and filters applied, not having any issues with speed on data or wifi.
Also on Android Q beta 4.

Thanks for your input !
So its more and more likely its either my router (Nighthawk R7000) or my provider (Ziggo)
Still doesn't explain why my P2XL never had problems.

You're welcome
I don't know what the cause is for you. I guess I'm just basically trying to let you know it could be something else that's the issue. Just cuz it's fine for me and I have it heavily configured.
I mean, theoretically, using Adguard SHOULD increase load times, however, not to the severity that you're describing - and not in such inconsistent quantities and intervals...
I'm wondering how Adguard distributes their server load as I imagine they have to be relatively spaced apart so that users further away don't experience extra latency routing through a server that's halfway around the planet...
But hey, that could be a potential cause - perhaps they shut down the server hosted in your region and so your load times are horrible now. This could at least explain why you didn't experience as much latency on your P2XL....
I had this issue before.
Turn off DNS filtering. I'm based in the UK and also disabled ipv6 as adguard won't work on 4g only WiFi
