I've searched the Q&A for threads but don't see an answer. Is there a ROM that allows unlimited wifi tether/hotspot on TMO?
I used to use the Wifi Tether app but that joint been messing up
Any cm rom as far as i know.
u should be able to on stock, i am able to with AT&T
As far as I can tell you don't even need to be rooted or modded to get this to work. Seems to work for me using an adb shell and typing:
PHP:
settings put global tether_dun_required 0

I have done this, TMO still knows when I'm tethering. Anything else we know if?

Since getting my OP3, no matter what tethering app came with the rom, TMO always knew I was tethering, even with the usual tweaks like provisioning set to 0, etc. So I retried the Wifi Tether Router app, and it was a pain to set up. I ended up emailing the developer, and he got back to me within a few hours with some things to try and now it works well. So far TMO isn't seeing the tethering, but of course it's showing up as data. And I'm not using a VPN or a user agent changer, just straight up Wifi Tether Router. There is always going to be a little data that will show up as tethering in my experience with pretty much every hotspot tweak, and it's the same here. But it's a small amount that's never over 1gb in a month in my experience.
Here are my settings for the app that work flawlessly on Sultan's CM13 rom and even allow me to play xbox live with no lag if my signal's good: **NOTE: Haven't tried this on any other rom, so can't help you if it's not an OP3 running Sultan's CM 13**
Encryption type: wpa2-psk
Wifi Channel: 1
Interface: Auto (after using app, it sets itself to wlan0 - but selecting auto got it working)
Method: Auto (same thing as interface - will set itself to 2-Android Version 4.2 or higher - at least on my rom)
No Firmware Reload: Unchecked (important one!)
Prevents Standby: Checked
MTU Adjust: Checked
TTL Increment: Checked
Wifi Scanning AutoDisabler: Checked
Remove Background Image: Checked (not important - personal preference)
If it's not written above, it's either something you need to fill in yourself like SSID or password or it's standard and wasn't changed by me --> the default settings of the installed app. I'm attaching screen shots of checked/unchecked boxes as a reference. And definitely contact the developer if you need help, the guy is very helpful and knows what he's doing. Good luck, hope it works for you.

You are my hero. My lte kept dropping my hotspot
That's awesome, I'm glad to hear it! This little app was the best $2 or whatever it was I spent. It just consistently works. I also found another one awhile ago that is outstanding in its own right. It's called EasyTether Pro. Again, the paid version, but it's a simple decision on whether hassle free tethering is worth a tiny investment. EasyTether Pro is not wireless, but it's also truly undetectable I've found across every rom I've used it. And since it's primarily a USB tethering based app (although it offers bluetooth as well), it's blazing fast. It's a good one to throw in the mix or have as a backup I no longer use the hotspots that are baked into the roms unless I know the dev has modded it themself. Because as long as making money off of tethering data is worthwhile for these companies, it's going to be a constant cat and mouse game. Ain't nobody got time for that! These third party apps take very different approaches that are consistently effective.
And to anyone reading, I'm not a shill for either of these apps. I could care less if you buy them. I'm just passing along useful info that was passed on to me or I discovered myself. Happy tethering!

you can simply use an app to change the ttl, that's how they see if the phone is tethering or not

I believe there may be some noobs on XDA, like myself, who did not know how to set up wifi tethering after root. Here's a quick rundown.
1. ROOT your phone (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756885)
2. Go to Playstore and download "Wifi tether for ROOT users" (****EXCEPTION BELOW)
3. IMPORTANT!!! go to the app's setting and set the "Change Device Profile" to "GENERIC ICS"
4. there is no step 4.
Save yourself some $$$ instead of paying Verizon a service that should have been free to start off with. :victory:
EDIT: **** buhohitr mentions that you can achieve wifi tethering WITHOUT ROOT through the playstore app "FoxFi"
ENJOY!!!!!

Well... I figured it'll get the most views in the development section so here it is. One thing I might change is getting this in the "Guide" category
Just a note: I've been using this app with really inconsistent results using generic ics profile and auto setup. I've only been able to detect the wifi twice. I read somewhere that turning wifi tether on, let it start up, turn it off, reboot phone, and start up tethering again works somehow. I just tried it and it worked right away but this is only once. I don't know if this will work consistently 100% of the time though
best wifi tethering is just down load Foxfi from the market, installed and bang work like a champ..very reliable.Foxfi work with root and without root.
Thanks, that was a lot easier than I'm used to. Wifi tether worked the first time, and I turned it off and on a few times and it worked everytime.

This is the correct way to do it. choose "galaxy nexus for CDMA/LTE"
also, do not forget to check "routing fix"
this will give you full infrastructure tethering instead of ad-hoc tethering.
what does this mean? It means that your phone will allow things like ipod's , game systems (psp, gameboy..) to connect as well. It will function exactly like a wifi router.
cheers
This could just go in the themes and apps forum technically since all you're doing is installing an app basically... But I guess it's a guide. Thanks for the info OP. For those of you on the new shared data plans, don't even worry about following this guide, the tethering is included in the package because Verizon wants you to use more data and pay overages.
The default tethering app however does support open NAT for Xbox and PSN though which is kinda nice :X (Only wireless tethering root app I got to work with PSN and Xbox for open NAT is barnacle WiFi tether and it was a bit of a pain the butt.)
Free Hotspot on Shared Plan
If you purchased the phone with Verizon After the deadline and lost your unlimited data however, gaining a shared plan, Wifi Hotspot is included in the share data plan at no additional cost. There is no reason to hide your wifi traffic. HOWEVER, I personally find the Wifi Tether app to be better than the default Hotspot app anyway.

You must have meant that this is the correct way for you. When I check "routing fix" or "galaxy nexus CDMA/LTE", my laptop connot see a wifi signal. However, following the OP's post worked like a charm for me. Obviously, it may take a bit of tinkering for people to determine the best setup for themselves.
Is there a way to lower the power of the Wifi from the phone to save power. The range you get when tethering is way further than necessary and it might be better for battery if you could lower the power usage.
Also, is using this rooted wifi tether safer than using foxfi in terms of verizon detecting the use.
How safe are these methods compared to using a power toggle widget to just enable the built-in tethering app? I've found if you try to enable it from the menu, it checks for subscription, but if you use a power toggle app, it "just works."
Edit: One more question....while performing the Wifi pop-up hack, I found an option along the lines of TETHER_ALWAYS_ON. Has anyone tried changing this to a 1?
I believe tethering is more frowned upon than anything else by verizon. I have not heard otherwise, or heard of trouble with big red because of it. However, the "best customer experience" is had when you pay for it. Haha.
Been using Foxfi the last couple of days with no problems. Solid app that works well.
That worked for me, thank u sir

This is going to theme an apps. It's not really a mod at all.
So I know there are quite a few threads out there about wifi tether. The general concensus is that WiFi Tether is the best app to use, however I've found that very particular settings are needed to get this to work. While I am not a dev and have not had sucess in getting this app to work on our phone. I thought I would start a thread for those who have had success using the application in hopes that they could share their settings with the rest of us so we can take advantage of 4g as it continues to roll out. I have also tried Barnacle and not had any success either.
I found this on another thread, it was a couple pages deep so I'm reposting here, please swing over to other thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2138144&highlight=wifi+tether&page=2 #13 and give jdock a thanks for his fix. This works, but there is currently a bug in JB that only allows one tether session per boot. Once you disable wifi tether, it will not work again until you reboot the device
TY jdock
Try this:
device profile = generic ics/jb (wlan0)
setup method = netd-ndc (master)
wifi driver reload = checked
enable wifi encryption = unchecked (you can enable it later when it's working unencrypted)
enable access-control = unchecked (you can enable it later when the basics are working)
Now, when I first started with this app, my devices would connect to the AP but then give up because they couldn't get a dhcp address. I found that if I went into the 'change lan' menu and picked a different lan, that it started working (I currently use 10.10.3.0/24).
If you can't get it working, I came up with another method you may be able to use that does not use any app (I have the at&t model but it's probably the same). Basically you turn off wifi, then run a few commands (as root) that bring the wifi interface back up without disabling mobile data. It will connect to your local wireless lan as if you had enabled wifi. Then you can run a socks or http proxy and point your other device at it (easy if you're wanting to tether a pc, maybe not so easy if you're using something else). I haven't tried yet to see if it will route between the networks, which would mean you can just manually change your default gateway to your phone's wlan address and have all traffic go through it.
Anxiously awaiting

I hope you get some answers. I haven't been able to get this app to work on by GNex on JB 4.2.1 OR 4.2.2 using 4 different ROMs. The app doesn't seem to have been updated in many months, and I'm assuming that it won't work on JB in any form.

I'm on a JB rom now, and it does work. See the directions I posted from another thread in the OP and wifi tether will work. However, once you turn off wifi tether you will need to reboot the phone for wifi and data to function normally.
Even when Wi-Fi tether runs "with errors" it still works... for some reason my phone doesn't heat up as much when I run with errors -- probably had something to do with the Wi-Fi driver that the app reloads.

My wifi tether setup has no issues with data not working and I can turn it off and on without problems. I've used the phone for calls, texts, and internet after using wifi tether. The only issue is that you cannot turn wifi on after running tether. Once rebooted wifi will turn back on until I use tether again. I'm on a stock rooted JB rom.
Generic ics/jb Wlan0
Netd ndc master
Send Netd max client cmd checked
wifidriver reload checked
Router fix checked
Wifi fix checked
I have access control checked as well but that doesn't matter.
I've yet to be able to get this app working. I've tried these setting before and several other settings to no avail. When I try these, everything but the first item in the log and the last two say they failed. Now it does broadcast it's SSID and I can join the network, but there is no data connection.
I'm on stock Jelly Bean rom. The funny thing is, I used Wifi tether app on Lifeless and Imperium and it worked with a few different settings.

Glad to see other people are able to contribute. I'm not a developer so not much I can do except dig around other forums and see what helps. I'm using Imperium Initiative v2.0.1 with wifi tether, with the settings in my op. Maybe there are some adjustments in imperium/lifeless that cause this to work. I will try the file posted and report back to see if I can re-enable wifi after disabling tether.

This one works for me with these settings:
Generic ics/jb Wlan0
Netd-Ndc (master)
Send Netd max client cmd - checked
Enable WiFi-Encryption - checked
WiFi-driver reload 2 - checked
Enable Access-Control - checked (If this is checked the first time the client connects, you have to grant it access from your phone. You'll notice a new icon on the top of your phone where all of your running program icons are. When you see it just pull down the list and select it and check your client and then hit apply)Routing fix - checked
Hope this helps
something probably worth mentioning on this, I'm currently on Lifeless 14, and the connections optimizer was screwing with this app. I turned it off and it worked like a charm.
Not of concern to anyone AOSP/AOKP/CM/PA but for stock/lifeless/imperium(i think) this is worth looking into for some folks.

throttling
Well since it seems the tethering problem hasn't been remedied yet (touchy and have to restart), has anyone figured out a way to get around sprint's throttling? Unfortunately I for the life of me can't get my MSL, and also unfortunately I hate using the phone to call sprint. hrm.

Now that S-OFF is available and many people have root, I thought I would help everyone get Wifi Tether working.
Download the attached APK. WifiTether APK
It's available all over the internet, so I don't have a link to the source.
Use the following settings (you must have root):
Device-Profile: Generic ICS/JB (wlan0)
Setup-Method: Auto
Enable Wifi-Encryption: Checked
Change SSID and Passphrase to your liking
Wifi-driver reload: Unchecked
Wifi-driver reload 2: Checked
MSS clamping: Checked
Routing fix: Checked
That should do it. Hope that helps anyone that was having issues. Start tethering and grant superuser permissions. It may ask you to grant twice. Make sure you accept both.
Enjoy!
This will appear as a regular AP, not via ad-hoc.

Hi,
I just upgraded to kitkat. Using the setings mentioned above, when I try to start the tether it appears to hang. Are the settings different under kitkat?

if I have helped you please press the thanks button.
There is s thread that allows you to enable the native tethering if you want to keep the stock operating system and not use an aftermarket Rom. It's a lot less hassle than trying to get WiFi tether to work. Most Roms out already has native tethering working. I feel the connection is way better using the native tethering over the app.

by using the stock native hotspot feature, i reached the maximum 2.5gb and received text messages from t-mobile saying its blocked and i can use it again next billing cycle.
by breaking it, you simply add APN. same settings and the only difference is change the APN protocol to IPV4/IPV6 then save it.
im a mac user so safari no issues or whatsoever, but on chrome you need to change your UA to safari 5
Goodluck!

Just to clarify, You're only using Safari browser on your Mac? I take it that if you use Firefox it wouldn't work?
For those using a OpenVPN Client app has it already changed to IPV4/IPV6. I'm curious if you would have to create a new APN anyway or just use the APN that you're already on that is already switched to IPV4/IPV6?
I'll test it out as soon as I run over, which is soon and will report back.

im using safari and chrome. i tried downloading safari and i got flagged by t-mobile. im happy with Safari and Chrome so im all good.
and by the way, we have 2 ipad's and tablet and no issues connecting with my note 3 with this setup i posted.
you have to create a new APN since the stock APN is not editable, blurred everything..
Thanks a lot for the info!
Quick question (keeping in mind I have not done (wifi) tether via a hotspot:
I understand the useragent switcher is needed to surf the web via Chrome (for non-Mac users who can't use Safari) when using this thread's technique.
However if, e.g., I want to use this free hotspot tethering option (beyond the 2.5 GB of hotspot included for free by T-Mobile) to simply watch Netflix (via the app and not via the browser) on a tablet or laptop using the Note 3's data connection (as opposed to being interested in browsing the web), then am I right to assume I don't need to worry about first firing up my web browser on the tablet (e.g. Chrome and UA switcher method) to establish the data connection like some VPN's force you to do?
So far I have actually not even used ANY of the 2.5 GB included by T-Mobile (I have not done any tethering with my Note 3 yet sinceI have wifi via my cable internet at home and have not needed it on vacation yet either).
Nevertheless, I am still interested in exploring the technique described here to get it for free beyond the 2.5 GB (never know when I might be on vacation and don't want to risk going over).
PS: Here is a similar thread:

I will try this
I am going to try this technique for the next few days. Thanks for the post! I have been using the WIFI Tether- Treve Mod for the last few months with no many issues. I did have to use the user agent switcher for chrome though. Last month I used 28GB of mobile data.

Processes
When i was on US Cellular There was a process that was called "synchronos" that was designed to check with US cellular's network to see if you were able to tether, and "police" the amount of data you were allowed to tether. I just switched to T-Mobile today.. I havent found that process yet.. Anyone know what process T-Mobile uses to check the status of your tethering package? I can freeze it with Titanium backup and tether all i want.

OK, question from a noobie - at least where tethering comes in.
I've been reading this thread (forgive if I should have done this at the end of the most recent message, not familiar with appropriate
protocol) and want to clarify my own understanding while questioning UA.
I migrated from Verizon and immediately came upon the 2.5 Gig limit everyone is talking about. I found an on-line resource that showed me
how to change my Access Point Name from T-Mobile US (apn = epc.tmobile.com) by creating a new one with apn = ipv4.
Now I'm able to tether without T-Mobile sending me notifications with respect to their 2.5 Gig limit.
Question: Have I effectively by-passed their limit by doing this, or do I also have to look at UA switching? I'll have to admit I'm not at all
familiar with the UA thing.
I'm tethering my Galaxy Note 3, while my wife is tethering her Ipad 4 (using Chrome.)
Just don't want to get hit with a big bill for the extra Gigs.
Thanks a lot.

What settings do you use? I cannot get this mod to work
It's a VERY valid concern. Anyone that has hit the limit on tethering will tell you that T-Mobile DOES NOT give you more tether data and bill you later. They will stop you and suggest you purchase more. No unexpected big bills should be in your future due to tethering.

I use the user agent switcher below. I have to use "Googlebot (Google's spider)" though. I can still tether to my tablet with no issues. Using APN protocol IPV4 or IPV4/IPV6 works for me as well.

Idiots Guide to Tethering
I know this may seem like a silly request, perhaps even an unfair one, but I've been looking for a way to tether my T-Mobile Samsung Note 3 device since I switched from Sprint using the iPhone device last November.
I downloaded Fox Fi, Hotspot Toggle, and so many other apps I read about on blogs. This is the closest one that addresses a problem I've been running into.
When it comes to technology and setting things up, I'm a complete moron. Some of the terms I know little about, which is why I'm hoping someone could post the process for setting up our phones in steps, and from what I've read so far, what web browsing software not to use or only use when tethering our devices on a Mac, iPad or other devices. I've been traveling back and forth to Fresno in Central California to care for my ailing mother, and the ony wifi signal I got was from my phone. Unfortunately, 2.5GB disappears quickly, and I can't be increasing my Hotspot data plan every time I visit home.
Thank you one and all for being supportive and understanding.
Hi
I've been using a Lollipop 5.0.1 Note 4 port ROM on my Note 3, tethering worked like a charm. I've used up to 125GB monthly for the past 4 months on T-Mobile tethering to my Mac, AppleTV, tablets, desktops, laptops... you name it. Obviously custom ROMs aren't perfect. Battery life is horrible, NFC & GPS doesn't work, Bluetooth and WiFi issues, some stock apps don't work as they should, etc...
I had to upgrade to T-Mobile's Official firmware due to a big malfunction that erased all my data and almost bricked my device. Immediately rooted and downloaded a Deodexed and Knox free Tmo firmware. In just a day I hit the cap on my 5GB tethering plan and my speeds have been reduced to 128kb... Spotify doesn't even load any music on my iPad and I don't even wanna try loading Netflix on my AppleTV.
I've been wondering wth makes a custom ROM able to tether freely and how I could apply that to my "almost" stock ROM. I've read so many threads and comments, applied some suggestions and used some apps and none works for me. I'm not a developer neither a noob, but any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks
I have spent over a year trying to resolve the tethering issue with T-Mobile and their upsell page that appears after you have maxed your hotspot data limit. It seems that some people can get around it using 'user agent spoofing' while others don't need to. I thought I would share my latest findings on this topic. I have successfully enabled Wi-Fi Tethering without needing to use user agent spoofing when using Windows browsers. This was achieved hours after T-Mobile sent me a text saying my hotspot data limit had been reached. First, a rundown of my Note 3:
T-Mobile Note 3
TWRP 2.8.0.0 Recovery
HyperDrive ROM Release 5
Compulsion Kernel 16
Wifi Tether v3.4 experimental ( http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...e=wifi_tether_v3_4-experimental1.apk&can=2&q= )
There are some screenshots below showing my settings:
MSS Clamping (MSS Clamping only appears in the options when using a kernel that supports it).
Routing Fix should be also checked.
Update: Just updated my Hyperdrive ROM to ver. 5 and I had to switch the device profile to Galaxy S3 to get it to work. Not sure why but using the device profile for the Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE) stopped working.
UPDATE 2: I also failed to mention that, for me at least, I have to start tethering twice before it shows up as a wireless connection. Not sure why but it just can't be seen the first time you launch it after a fresh boot ...for me anyway. So, if it doesn't work the first time just stop it and fire it up again. Should be golden from then on!
UPDATE 3: Another update? So soon? Well, yes because I seem to keep forgetting to mention important details. A.D.D. at work! Heh! Ok, first off I highly recommend using Googles DNS servers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) as you will most likely have problems if you don't. Place them in the ip4 properties of your PC's wireless adapter.
It's important to note that sometimes you will not acquire DNS when connecting to your hotspot. This is fixed by simply selecting the 'T-Mobile Tethering' APN prior to activating Wi-Fi tethering.
I haven't changed anything else from within Android or with any other apps.
Please post your results because defeating the upsell page has been an ongoing problem for me and many others and this has resolved it for me. I have full tethering access on my PC at LTE speeds as though it was a dedicated internet connection.
NO MORE USER AGENT SWITCHING!
Please hit the thank you button if this has helped you. Best of luck!

Defeating the upsell page is easy
First of all if you can enable the hotspot on your device you can use any mobile device without seeing the upsell page as the system relies on USER AGENT STRINGS to identiry your device. So on windows or mac firefox or chrome install a user agent switcher. Then use it to choose say chrome for android. Simply refresh the page and you are up and running. Some pages will not always display right as you will get the mobile version. You can also run programs such as utorrent and teamviewer without modifications through the hotspot. Any questions just ask..

This works without needing User Agent mods and doesn't trigger the upsell page even after your Hotspot limit has been exceeded.

Thank you so much, this worked great..I use to always have a problem connecting my ps3 to my phone, would get the upsell page immediately, but now it seems to be working fine, I can go online with my ps3 using your settings. Been looking for a long time for a way to do this. Once again thank you. I did not see the option to check MSS clamping, but it seems to work fine.
Can't get this to work on Tweaked 3.9 for the Note 3. Not that it's needed, since native tethering works without any tethering data usage ever being detected. But I've always liked this app and native tethering takes several minutes for data to flow properly.

Did you try it with the Compulsion 16 kernel? I couldn't get it to work originally until I installed it. Not 100% sure that it matters yet as I haven't done any more testing without it or with other kernels. I don't want to mess with it too much as it's my main phone for home/work and home internet.

please help.
I have the new hyper drive as well. I have been battling a issue for a few days now and I am so happy I found this. Heres my issue, I use my hot spot as well as teathering every day. But I also tend to flash back and forth between ROMs as well, so its impossible for me to pin point how much hot spot data I used. Any way, it worked fine but now this happens....
first it will connect to my laptop, the phone shows its connected my laptop says connected as well yet it is limited access on the laptop with out internet access. When I switch it off to try again the hot spot on the phone will not even connect. It just fails over and over and over. After a reboot it starts the proccess over again. I am running the hyper drive ROM on my n900t
Is this better than wifi tether router? Because it works really good and i dont even have to setup anything I just turn it on and thats it!!
