Well, this is embarrassing.
Something I just found interesting about (what I assume is) a TW limitation?
When I want to take a picture to attach to an SMS, or attach an old picture to an SMS, I seem to only have the choices of the stock cam and stock gallery apps.
I thought that perhaps I had inadvertently set a default in the first day of ownership (although I don't remember doing so, and I am fastidious about these things), but there were no defaults to clear, either in the MSGing app, or the cam app.
While I find being forced to use the stock gallery for attachment annoying (I like QuickPic far better, for several reasons), not the end of the world.
But I use Vignette almost exclusively for taking pics, and having to close txt app > open vignette > take pic > close vignette > (wait for pic to process) > open txting > attach pic... P.I.T.A.
Am I missing something obvious? It's been quite some time since I used TW stock for any period of time. (On my E4GT I used anything but TW for the last 6 months of ownership...) But even then I still seem to remember TW offering me a choice of installed cams for attachments. Is this a Note II "thing"? Or something in the newer iterations of TW?
Thanks for reading, comrades-in-nerdiness.

There are no defaults to clear in the cam, gallery or messenger. I am literally forced to use the stock cam in attaching a pic to a msg.
Can someone confirm that this is the case on stock for them as well?
Or perhaps confirm that on a different rom its Not the case?
(fu*king spam, thanks for the bump)

I downloaded the quick pic and I get no option to use it when picking a picture from the messaging app. Maybe contact the developer about it.
Edit: actually it might be how the phone software is meant to handle attachments. I installed another gallery app and it doesn't show up either.

thanks, if you're on stock, than I consider the issue confirmed. for stock at least. with gallery.
anyone on any other ROMs can confirm?
(I already assume that anything AOSP does not have the issue, but I am wondering if any TW base ROMs have tweaked something that would allow for other apps to be used as either defaults.)
I've only had the option to use stock camera/gallery on TW.

When choosing to add an attachment if you choose take picture it defaults to the stock camera. But when u chose to attach an image and click on the stock images symbol you get options to choose from different apps. And quickpic pops up fine for me. Just downloaded it since above poster mentioned it.

thanks for that! would never have found that, counter-intuitive! (also, I tend not to attach many images from the gallery, usually take them on the spot.)
(found another cool little thing, if you long press any icon in the attachments menu, takes you to the app properties...)
still hoping to find a way to use a better/different camera app in attachments though. hrm. far more important.

What I hate is when browsing the gallery if you have your dropbox synced to it you don't have an option to share. However I do for my Facebook pictures which is also an online service. So in order to share I have to go to the messaging app and click attach from the dropbox in the attach photo selection I posted above. If you attach directly from dropbox it created a link to visit instead but if you use it from the massaging app it loads up the photo.

Sometimes when I open the Camera App I can only choose "Self" or "camera", other times I get the complete list (pano, etc etc)
Does that happen to anyone else?
Yes it appears to be a linking issue. If you notice after you take a photo when thus happens toy are presented with a check mark and an X like you transferred from another app to use the camera API.
Change your shortcut and it should fix itself

That worked, thanks!
Anyone else seeing a really long lag when trying to load the gallery from the stock camera app? Checking a shot takes way too long; easily 5-6 seconds. It's driving me a bit nuts. And yes, I could use a different camera app, but the stock on is the camera it loads from the lockscreen, which I actually do a lot. Anyone else experiencing this, or possibly know how to fix it?

I experience the same.. and I don't have a resolution.
I just figured it was software properly releasing the hardware to something.. drivers letting go of whatever they hardware they were holding on to.

Yeah, same issue for me as well. Big bummer.

This is a great app, but is there a way to make this the default gallery? Can't figure how to, the normal gallery still loads from the camera app (painfully slow) and i haven't seen an option to change, thanks.

You are correct. I don't think you can make it the default gallery for the camera app sadly.
Love QuickPic- been using it since Note 2. I'm not seeing any lag though. I've got the pics going to the external sd card and it's a fast card- maybe card read/write speed matters here.
Another thought is maybe there's a file that's corrupted in the folder where the pics are.
I have found that if you have the option set to view picture or video after each shot it's almost instant, and the gallery loads very quick for me this way.

That kind of works, but I don't want to have to review each picture and then go back to the camera each time. I have to believe that Samsung is working on this, as this is a huge consumer-facing issue, though I haven't heard much talk about it.
Have you tried QuickPic out? I know it doesn't load from the lockscreen but at least that will tell you if it's an issue with that app specifically. I was also thinking it might be card-related-- is your micro sd card a fast one?
Turning off online photo locations and using .nomedia files to stop the gallery from scanning unwanted folders helps too.

I have found when changing the storage location to internal, rather than external, then snap a picture so that it will be the most recent, it loads up quicker

Well yes...because it doesn't have to scan your external SD card. Obviously anything saved to the internal will load faster.
When using using the barcode scanner from Zing all the images were reversed and upside down. I just noticed the same effect from a mobile bank deposit app. Anyone else having this issue?
Same here. Bank deposits.

Looks like a developer issue and common for all of us (so more of a Marshmallow issue vs. a 5X) - https://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus/comments/3pmrda/mirrored_camera_on_5x/
Same issue.
Deposited a check and the camera was upside down and reversed.
Scanned a barcode into Myfitnesspal and the same thing happened.
noticed this on a barcode scanner.
works fine w/ default camera app.
same problem with camera zoomfx
barcode scanner app was fixed today by its developers.. just updated and it no longer mirrors. so, every app has to be updated

I use Walgreen's to pick up my prescriptions and every time I go to scan the barcode its upside down its kinda annoying I just ended up typing in the number and also had the same issue using the "scan your card" feature in amazon when you add a new card the camera was upside down its a little annoying but its crazy at what kind of bugs new software can have its a little humorous

My Chase app was doing this when I did a mobile deposit, I was very confused but then saw some posts about this and being an app update issue.

It's actually funny that you mention that. I have the ZXing barcode scanner app too and the first day I had the Nexus 5X I noticed the same thing. Just checked now and it's fine.
I have the same issue with the Amazon app. scanner. What I don't understand is that why does this only affect the 5X. A friend's 6P doesn't face this issue in any of the same apps installed on that device??

The camera is mounted upside down in the 5x
The new camera API tells software that so it can flip it over, but apps using the old API just use the camera as it is mounted

They released an update to it a week or so ago which fixed the issue. I have other apps that still make the wrong api calls and get upside down images.
OK, the stock camera is crap it won't auto focus. I have found an app called 'A better camera' and it is great focus not a problem anymore.
My question is, how can I change the default camera app. You know on the lock screen if you launch the camera app from there I want it to use the 3rd party app not the stock one.

Try settings» apps» camera» clear defaults, then do the same for other camera app. See if you get a popup next time that gives you the option
Had a look in settings, everything that says camera has no defaults set. Therefore clear defaults button is not available.
