Well, this is embarrassing.
Something I just found interesting about (what I assume is) a TW limitation?
When I want to take a picture to attach to an SMS, or attach an old picture to an SMS, I seem to only have the choices of the stock cam and stock gallery apps.
I thought that perhaps I had inadvertently set a default in the first day of ownership (although I don't remember doing so, and I am fastidious about these things), but there were no defaults to clear, either in the MSGing app, or the cam app.
While I find being forced to use the stock gallery for attachment annoying (I like QuickPic far better, for several reasons), not the end of the world.
But I use Vignette almost exclusively for taking pics, and having to close txt app > open vignette > take pic > close vignette > (wait for pic to process) > open txting > attach pic... P.I.T.A.
Am I missing something obvious? It's been quite some time since I used TW stock for any period of time. (On my E4GT I used anything but TW for the last 6 months of ownership...) But even then I still seem to remember TW offering me a choice of installed cams for attachments. Is this a Note II "thing"? Or something in the newer iterations of TW?
Thanks for reading, comrades-in-nerdiness.

There are no defaults to clear in the cam, gallery or messenger. I am literally forced to use the stock cam in attaching a pic to a msg.
Can someone confirm that this is the case on stock for them as well?
Or perhaps confirm that on a different rom its Not the case?
(fu*king spam, thanks for the bump)

I downloaded the quick pic and I get no option to use it when picking a picture from the messaging app. Maybe contact the developer about it.
Edit: actually it might be how the phone software is meant to handle attachments. I installed another gallery app and it doesn't show up either.

thanks, if you're on stock, than I consider the issue confirmed. for stock at least. with gallery.
anyone on any other ROMs can confirm?
(I already assume that anything AOSP does not have the issue, but I am wondering if any TW base ROMs have tweaked something that would allow for other apps to be used as either defaults.)
I've only had the option to use stock camera/gallery on TW.

When choosing to add an attachment if you choose take picture it defaults to the stock camera. But when u chose to attach an image and click on the stock images symbol you get options to choose from different apps. And quickpic pops up fine for me. Just downloaded it since above poster mentioned it.

thanks for that! would never have found that, counter-intuitive! (also, I tend not to attach many images from the gallery, usually take them on the spot.)
(found another cool little thing, if you long press any icon in the attachments menu, takes you to the app properties...)
still hoping to find a way to use a better/different camera app in attachments though. hrm. far more important.

What I hate is when browsing the gallery if you have your dropbox synced to it you don't have an option to share. However I do for my Facebook pictures which is also an online service. So in order to share I have to go to the messaging app and click attach from the dropbox in the attach photo selection I posted above. If you attach directly from dropbox it created a link to visit instead but if you use it from the massaging app it loads up the photo.

With the default messaging application when i receive a mms it comes in as a slide show even though it is only one picture. If i open picture up and hit menu ,pause, the picture still goes away after a little while.
Why am i receiving a slide show when one picture is sent to me. I know i can use chomp or handcent but i would rather jut get this fixed.
Is it possible to stop slide shows or just the way things are on the phone?
I would like to know if there is a fix for this too.
Thank you

The fix is to replace the htc messing app with the standard android app. It's been a while since I did it but a google search will yield the instructions and the apk.

So far i seen that happen in the beginning Also.. the reason it goes to slide show is cause there is a caption to the pic. Have the person or persons not write something and just send the pic.. it will come not as a slide show

Actually that is not totally true... I have recieved plenty of messages with captions... I have seemed to narrow it down to
1. Iphones like to create slideshows for us. (Randomly at that)
2. The file format of the picture..

Thank you doing a search i found the Mms.apk file removed old one and installed new one and it worked out just great.
@masterfuel:
I get what your saying, that might be true in some cases, but i have tested this method with only Androids sending me the pictures.
Its been from DroidX, Evo, both bring up a slide show, but after doing what "baknblack" suggested actually turned out to be a better solution.
If anyone needs the fix here it is

Thanks for all the feedback on this. I have been getting a slide show for pretty much everything. From android, blackberry and iPhone. Maybe it has something to do with the captions people are adding like someone mentioned. But it is annoying that u can't stop the slide show. If u click on picture there is a pause button but it starts again by itself. I will try that basic Android fix and see how that works out. I am guessing u push file to system/app and delete the old one.... whatever that is called. I have to see if there are instructions in the other thread linked here.

I used to have this issue also, I remember searching for a fix and then found that it was just the messaging app, downloaded handcent and have never looked back, just remember to disable the notifications on the stock app and then you have a fully functional, kick ass, text messaging app.

Hello all,
I'm been a very happy Nexus user since I bought my phone in January. I've never experience any problems with the hardware or software until now. I noticed today that when I am in the stock camera app and slide over to view my pictures the app crashes/FC. I'm not sure when it started happening, again noticed today, but it did used to work fine before. I don't use my camera all that often so it's not a huge deal but since I am 100% stock + root I expect the stock apps to work fine.
Has anyone else's phone doing this? I tried restarting to no avail. YouTube video coming up! I apologize if this has been discussed elsewhere. If so can someone kindly redirect me to the thread?

Hmm... while waiting for the video to upload to YouTube I did more testing and I think I have it figured out. I took a picture last week and rotated it counter-clock wise using QuickPic. When opening this particular picture in QuickPic everything works as expected but when I open the same picture using the stock gallery app the app crashes. So I guess the way QuickPic saved the picture (corrupted?) is making the stock gallery app bug out. Anyone else care to try to see if you can recreate the crash?

Can't see your image (broken link?)
This is a longshot, but you could try deleting the folder /sdcard/android/data/com.google.android.gallery3d
This will remove the Gallery's cache file so it will recreate it from scratch. I'm not sure if the clear cache command actually wipes the file or simply empties it.

I've had this probelm. I encountered it when I was trying to change the picture size. For some reason it wasn't too happy when I was making my pics smaller. What I did to fix it was ckear the data in the gallery app.

-Gallery (under "ALL"
-Clear data
Then I rebooted and I didn't have any problems. Hope this helps you out.

Yes, thanks for that. I also think something went awry when editing the picture. It doesn't seem to like it like you said. Since the picture wasn't that important I decided to just delete it.
Has anyone had any problems with the Samsung Gallery app freezing or being unresponsive? On mine, (no root, all stock) whether you go straight to the app or view a picture through it, it just freezes. I'm not able to select pictures, zoom or anything except for scrolling.... I can scroll up and down, left and right to view more pictures but that is it.
I know downloading another gallery app is a kind of fix, I just want something that will run vanilla with the camera app.
Thanks in advance!
I don't have this problem, but had other problems before. I've tried so many things to fix my problem but to no avail, so I just went ahead and reset the phone, my problem was fixed. I've been using the quickpic app for some time now and never looked back to the stock Samsung.

Downloading a new app is definitely a fix, although it's still very annoying to me when switching in between the camera and the gallery app. I still haven't found a solution even from doing a factory reset. I found a video that shows exactly what it's doing (can't post link yet, but if you search "s4 unresponsive gallery" into Youtube, it's the first video)
Is there a way to get the gallery/camera apk to resinstall it? Any other suggestions?
Thanks!
At least for me. I loved being able to snap a pic with my big camera, have the EyeFi upload it and sync it to Picasa, and have the picture in my JB stock gallery on the Nexus 4 automatically. The Sony Gallery will pull the Picasa images, but I have to manually tell it to refresh and it takes a LONG time.
Once the image is downloaded I can't share it from there, I have to download it and then go look for it and share it. It also downloads a small version of the image.
I was able to install the stock JB Gallery app but I was missing the components to sync Picasa. Still need to work on fixing that. Anyone use something that would make things better?
I don't know if this will help because it probably is quite obvious to you already, but have you tried using quickpic?

Oh that's not the way it's supposed to look? Haha. I had never used Quick Pic. It looks pretty good, but it doesn't have Picasa integration, so it doesn't add much value here.
I did find that I can pull the Picasa pictures more easily with Google +, but I still have to download them and then share them. It only shares to Google +. At least the resolution of the downloaded images is much better than what the Sony app gets and the pics are already synced when I open the app.
It looks like the Sony gallery does not use the Android sync service and pulls its own version of the images.

They want all of your Photos not only the ones you choose, I mean in case you want to use the sync option, which is (would be) a nice feature.
Would be very easy, I think, to add options like "Folders to sync"...."Folders to show"....and something like that, that makes the User the Owner of the Stuff
But these are Questions like, why we don't get an option to fully Access our Phones "Root" by Clickin......is all about the Money they make by Advertising "non Know Users" and so on....FTI.

Anyone else seeing a really long lag when trying to load the gallery from the stock camera app? Checking a shot takes way too long; easily 5-6 seconds. It's driving me a bit nuts. And yes, I could use a different camera app, but the stock on is the camera it loads from the lockscreen, which I actually do a lot. Anyone else experiencing this, or possibly know how to fix it?

You are correct. I don't think you can make it the default gallery for the camera app sadly.
Love QuickPic- been using it since Note 2. I'm not seeing any lag though. I've got the pics going to the external sd card and it's a fast card- maybe card read/write speed matters here.
Another thought is maybe there's a file that's corrupted in the folder where the pics are.
I have found that if you have the option set to view picture or video after each shot it's almost instant, and the gallery loads very quick for me this way.

That kind of works, but I don't want to have to review each picture and then go back to the camera each time. I have to believe that Samsung is working on this, as this is a huge consumer-facing issue, though I haven't heard much talk about it.
Have you tried QuickPic out? I know it doesn't load from the lockscreen but at least that will tell you if it's an issue with that app specifically. I was also thinking it might be card-related-- is your micro sd card a fast one?
Turning off online photo locations and using .nomedia files to stop the gallery from scanning unwanted folders helps too.
